I think the therapy and train ticket go hand in hand. You need both to ensure your mental health remains strong, the therapy to talk through any issues or stressors and the ticket home to touch base with those close to you in a safe and supportive environment. As someone who suffers depression, bipolar and ptsd o can’t explain how important it is to keep on top of your mental health. Keep up the good work!

@@jadewilkinson3786 Never said that did I. But as someone who, like you, has had emotinal problems for many years the evidence in her vids does not suggest she needs a therapy session at over £50 a pop once a week, or however often she has them. If she was that bad she would get them on the NHS free.
This seems like a money making by the therapists.

You keep saying that you’re shocked by how much you’re spending, but I think if you compared yourself to other people you’d find you’re actually quite financially aware and make smart decisions about where you spend your money. I have always known that in Hungary (where I'm from) train tickets are really cheap compared to other countries, but it still shocked me just how expensive travel in other places is.
Just to give you an example, a train ticket between Budapest and Nyíregyháza, i.e. the capital and a town far from it near the border costs 4430 HUF, which translates to roughly 11 GBP. Oh, and students (literally all of us, secondary school, uni, etc.) get 50% off ALL tickets; what is more, if you buy a monthly pass, you get 90% off. It's a pity that such offers are non-existent in most other countries.

@@camembertfanpage I have no idea, I'm from, live and study in Canada... But from what I've seen, it's pretty similar to Canada and not like in Germany or in France... It's up to £9 250 (~US$13 050) per year. International students pay between £10 000 and £35 000 annually for lecture-based undergraduate degrees, which is why I canceled my plan to study there 😅 British universities are known for having some of the highest tuition fees, according to my research... (within Europe, I guess.) It's not as bad as in the US, but definitely not "free" like in France or Germany... 😕 It's similar to some universities in Canada, and higher than some others (in my province it's only around 1 600-2 500$CAN per semester; but we have the cheapest system and it's only that price for our province's residents because we pay more taxes, etc. If you are from somewhere else in Canada and come to our province to study, you'll have to pay a different amount, which is double or triple what we pay. It's not as high as the tuition fees for international students, but it's somewhere between that and what we pay ourselves. - We're weird and appart, I guess haha.)

I feel so blessed to be able to travel for free on weekdays as a Dutch college student, now knowing that it doesn't work like that in the UK 😧 Basically, in the Netherlands college students get to choose between travelling for free on weekdays or on the weekends (this is more likely for students like you that go home on the weekends). My university is only a 9 min train ride away (+ 5 min cycling to the station and 5 min walking to campus). 🙈 Therefore I still live at my mom's, which saves so much money

Regarding the university texts (i'm sure you know this but maybe it's useful for someone else): libraries usually have one or even more copies of required reading texts available. And if they don't you can order the book via inter library loan, which is cheaper than buying it out right normally as well. 😊 But you do need to allow a few days for shipping in this case as well. 🤗

This is actually a very interesting video and you clearly are very sensible and aware of your spending habits. Whenever my Dad buys something that seems cheap/inexpensive he always compares it to 'the price of a cup of coffee'. Some people who live in my accommodation seem to have no sense of where their money is going as they buy all branded items and then order expensive takeaways, pizza and alcohol most nights.

One thing that really helped me when budgeting was creating an excel sheet and diving up expenses into categories (eating out, groceries, necessary recurring expenses, optional recurring expenses, etc.), and then using that data set to create a pie chart. Seeing my budget divided up visually was really quite a shock. Even though I didn't have much to spend, I was shocked at how much eating out took over my budget. Just a thought!

I live with my parents still, so just keep that in mind. I spend around $40-$50 a week on groceries, $30-$40 a week on gasoline, and maybe $10 on a meal out.

i live in the netherlands and we get free train tickets to travel from and to home if you're a student from our government. if you get your bachelor's within 10 years you dont have to pay it back, otherwise you do, which comes down to 100euros a month

Really cool to see this as I feel I spend so much as first year! You don't realise how much food and little things add up! I stay for the term so save on trains but do a lot of dance which is pricey!

this was so interesting! i really struggle with justifying most of my expenses, even through I am in a very lucky position financially due to my parents support. i am very aware that i am super privileged not having to worry about money, but it makes me feel ashamed sometimes, which it shoudn´t.

Don't use amazon!!!! try to use preordering services provided by libraries and book shops. I can guarantee you if a book you need is on a module or core reading list you will be able to find it somewhere in a university town or city!! Amazon is the least sustainable way to buy, they are still tax avoiding and do not pay their staff sufficiently (working conditions are also terrible, hand in hand that's not a great combination).

😱 that train ticket is so expensive!!! what a nightmare our railways are at the moment. mines to and from uni is around £20 usually and i still think that’s too much for the service we get. still nothing beats going home to see family and friends.

Interesting video! I'm a college student in california and not counting rent (I live on campus) or tuition (I go to a state school), I usually spend around $55 USD (43 pounds) a week. I eat entirely vegan and pretty healthy, honestly kind of similar to the kinds of things Ruby eats. This also factors in getting gas once a month (so I average it out to like $5 a week set aside for that) and having to buy toiletries and things like that in addition to groceries (usually around $5 a week as well). I don't have any subscriptions cause I'm stubborn and just use free things online lol Just the food usually comes out to $45 (35 pounds) a week, and I basically never go out for food or buy convenience items either. I make all of my food at my apartment and it's still so expensive

Haha I do the same with saying “well if I take away this outgoing it’s really only this amount!” 😂 you’re actually doing really well with being aware of what you spend. I’ve found using a budgeting tool on my bank account app has been really helpful to keep outgoings less than income. I used to freak out about spending lots of money on food - but honestly you want your biggest budget to go towards essentials like bills and food and not limit yourself too much on food. Spend on what keeps you healthy. Additionally, others will have some essentials that some folk will not have - I also pay for therapy sessions which I’m grateful that I can do this and now only go every couple months to check in. I’ll count this as an essential for wellbeing and health in my budget.

If you buy a train ticket in the station in advance for a specific train time (eg 11.50am there and 3.30pm return) the savings are huge. But if you miss the train you have to buy another ticket. I went to london which should cost 35 return but it was 18 without a rail card. So yeah, so worth it!

May I suggest a "seasonal fresh products challenge" ? I see you buy some fresh pepper in February. Idea: buy them canned or frozen, they then had been produced in summer and being canned or frozen means less waste in production.
