I have a slow computer and for those of you that have slow computers where ads slow it down even more then you might want to try the wsp lye calculator. It is the exact same thing as soapcalc (maybe a few less exotic oils) and without the distracting ads. It was probably written or bought by the exact same programmers.
    Just a helpful tip.
Additionally, I have the exact essential depot mold. They must have changed sizes over the past few years. The width on mine is smaller then the reported width on their website. Nonetheless, it is a very good mold and getting soap out of it is ridiculously easy. The soap dang near falls out of it when turned upside down. I wish I would have bought one or two more back then.

I’ve been out of my soaping loop a few years, got burned out and set it all aside. Planning to pick back up and ran onto this. That lye calc was my fave!!
I REALLY appreciate the test recipes and the follow through to the end here. I don’t see a lot of that, maybe I’ve not been looking for it but it was a really nice find. When I started soaping over 10 years ago it was all trial by fire rofl there were some recipes out there but it was always with ingredients I didn’t have and starting up we all know how expensive it is to start anything so I was crafting my own soaps from scratch. I have my old recipes laying around here somewhere-briefly saw them when I moved last summer 😱 I was NOT looking forward to finding them or starting from scratch. I’m anxious to try #1&3 from this. Spiralina & green clay is definitely gorgeous!

This video is very helpful Ellen, especially for those who don't know how to formulate a soap recipe!! Of those 4 you have posted, I like the second and third ones, which are similar to mine but I find the coconut oil is a little too heavy making the cleansing numbers too high. Those should be down to about 16 or so and a higher conditioning number to at least 58 or more. The rest of the oils and butters in both those recipes is good!! 👍

Soap calc has also helped me out greatly, along with an online measurement convertor to get things into grams. Thank you for the great tutorial, I made my first batch of soap using Recipe #3 a month ago. I added Brambleberry's titanium dioxide powder for the swirl with no fragrance oil which resulted in a creamy color. The soap bar makes a lovely soft lather and I love it! Wondering Ellen, do you have a video which includes the recipe on how to make a Goat's Milk soap? (I wasn't able to find one but most likely missed it :-). Could I make Recipe #2 above substituting the 12 oz of liquid with frozen cubed goats milk? Or is there another recipe you recommend to sub out for goats milk? Thank you again! Blessings, Lenore

Ok so first off I love your channel/videos/content!!!! When I say your videos are so helpful omg, pretty much everything I know so far is because of. I liked how you break things down step by step here, I've gotten so much better because of your videos. Also how do you determine the discount amount? I noticed your liquid amount was 12oz and you did 5oz of coconut milk and 7oz of water, how do you determine the ratio of how much for each liquid? I would also love a video on the amount of EO/FO to use in when making batches of soap 🤗😊

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you so much for watching!! I like to do a steep water discount, usually double the amount of lye, or close to that for the total liquids.. As far as fragrance and essential oils, each one can be different so it's important to look up the recommended usage rates..

Hi, I'm new to soap making. I enjoyed this video and the recipes.
The question I had is: 'how much sugar and sodium lactate to add to the lye solution? I don't see that is your recipe. Maybe you discuss this in another video, so I'll keep looking
Also, do you add the goat's milk volume to the water volume so your soap cures properly.
If Ellen doesn't respond maybe the commenters know the answers! Thanks

the sodium lactate is at a rate of 1 tsp per lb of oils, same for sugar and other additves. And I subtract the amount of milk from the total liquid volume, then add it to the oils.

This video is great! I think I might have done a different color per soap to make it easier to differentiate. Having all these bars at home, I would know immediately which bars have no perfumes, but #4 would probably stay at the kitchen sink. The rest in the bathrooms because they seem so moisturizing, and #4 is just a classic hand wash with no frills, but gets the job done! I love tbos video! I want to try soap making, but don't have the space. The supplies I would need and the cure.. I just don't have space. My husband would not be happy. I originally started looking at soap making to use bees wax in soap. We will be eventually buying a house, and I want to keep bees. I believe I could have a couple hives and always have honey, never have to buy soap, and always have lovely gifts that won't break the bank. Hubby is disabled and I believe my factory days are numbered as I'm not getting any younger. Anyhow, thank you for sharing!

How would you go about adding goat milk to these, powder or liquid? And how much? If you have premade lye solution, would you just add powder to the oils like you do the kaolin clay? Im a new soap maker & have the hardest time with percentages (due to disability) & lye. But if i have it all put me in oz's & step by step, i am good to go. PLEASE HELP! I watch your videos all the time & absolutely love learning from you!

For a milk powder, I would add it to the oils. About 1 tsp per lb of oils.

Hi Ellen, I am getting ready to try some of these wonderful recipes that you so kindly shared and demonstrated.... Thank you! Only, I have a question? Being new to soap making, your written recipes in the description box do not have the Goats milk at 5oz for each recipe. Will this mean that with the water at 12oz for at least recipes #1 & #2 that it is already water discounted for the goats milk? Or is it the goats milk at 5oz and the 12oz of water? Thank you.

    • @EllenRuthSoap

I understand about eczema, it's tough to deal with... When soap is properly made, there is no lye left in the finished bar, and the pH is gentle on skin.

O.. okay miss Ellen Ruth, l just dived in doing my first soap cutting you #2 recipe in half in case it became a major fail😂😂.
I added for my equal parts of lye/ water frozen cucumber juice. The lye mix did wonderful.
Now tell me why when l added the milk, salt, clay, C.oats and whipped with stock blender it got a foam on top please? I spooned as much foam off then blended the lye. It did wonderful. I almost let it emulsify to long. I did not like the clay smell so added 20 drops of peppermint eo. Y'alll don't laugh🥴
It's for my family so we'll see how it turns out smell wise. Not sure about color. My son will tell me it looks like baby poo😂😂😂 I'll blame it on him Becca l asked him to bring me some yellow and green mica powder. He brought me yellow and teal. I used them, this the color. Hoping the colors will grow prettier as it goes through its process.
I sprayed the tips with 91% alcohol to keep the ash from forming. Wrapped in towel an set on my patio that is closed in and no air conditioner .
    🤞🤞🤞🤞

You got this❣️ As far as the foaming??? Maybe you had some air trapped in your blender and it "whipped"?? As long as your lye to oils ratio is correct, all should be good👍

15:07 easier than go to were you bought to see the capacity is: pour water into the mold, to the fill line you want your soap to be, than pour the water into a measuring jug and see how much the mould took of water you have the measure of soap you will end up with. Simple.

I'm so thankful you shared how to use that specific lye calculator. I've been using Sage.... I've been making cold process soap for over 10 years, just for personal use and as gifts but am just now launching my (very small, local) business "Abundant Provision". I'm always happy to know why you are using a particular ingredient and what prupose it will serve in the soap you are making. Or perhaps how an ingredient reacts, positively or negatively, with other ingredients or skin.
PS. - I also love that you homeschool. I'm currently pregnant with our 10th child, our oldest is in 7th grade. My husband and I are both homeschool graduates (though I've also done some time in public school) and we've homeschooled all along.
