    I know this video is super old, but I wish I had learned about this when I was a teenager and was making my own deodorant, perfume oil and hair oil. I would have chosen to open a small online shop and sell handmade soap bars instead of college. I'm drawing, painting, writing and photographing now, so the artist and handmaker in me hasn't left, LOL!
    Thanks for sharing this! You're making me want to make my own soap and indulge in my love of soap bars, especially handmade soap bars!

    I started out that way, also. I would spray rubbing alcohol on my knife to help me cut bars and remove easier. But I only started out small, back then, so it worked great till I was able to get a block cutter. Boy was I happy when I got my first wire cutter. 😃. Very nice tutorial for beginners. Thumbs up 👍 and Blessings. 💕💕

    Yep, as a kid it was my job to stir the soap with a wooden spoon on the stove. It was poured into a big wooden box, put in the garage with a wool blanket over it. No such thing as a stick blender then. No fragrance, st it kinda smelled bad on the stove (animal lard) but smelled neutral when dried. We used to grate it for doing my dad’s filthy work clothes in the wringer washer.

    Also, I am glad you explained why not to use fragrances in candle section. Not everyone knows they are not skin safe. Some essential oils are also in that section and I wouldn't use those either.

    You mentioned replacing water with aloe vera juice. So it's a 1:1 replacement? How does it change any characteristics of the soap? Would this be considered an "all natural" soap? I'm not sure about the shortening. I was also curious as to why you wouldn't sell this soap. Is there a reason? Sorry for all the questions! I'm trying to learn. lol You are so kind and beautiful! I love watching your videos!

    • @EllenRuthSoap

      💕 yes you can replace all or some of the water with Aloe juice, I think it makes a really nice lather and is skin soothing.

    I have gotten several of these items in the Dollar Store. I'd check out the $Store first...then Walmart. I go to the new Super Walmart in my town, it's massive and great buys. But, I wouldn't rule out the $Store for a lot of these items. Here's a little story. My Uncle was adamant about having a paper towel holder that you hook to the wall. Every where I went...including Walmart the store only had the paper towel holders that stand up, i.e., on the counter. I went to the Dollar Store and low and behold I found the-- I guess you might say the old fashion paper towel holders that screws into the wall. Uncle was happy. Got to thank the Dollar Store. Thanks for the Walmart tips on the lye.

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gel phase does a few things that I like, it's forces saponification so it's faster to unmold, it can deepen colors, and give a glossier finish....

    This is a great video! I'm so inspired to make my first soap! I've been a little intimidated, but after watching this video I think I've got the courage to do it! I was wondering if I could substitute the distilled water for goat milk and the vegetable shortening with a walnut or avocado oil? Would that work for this recipe?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Working with milk is a bit more advanced... And if you switch oils, you'll need to run the numbers thru a soap calculator because oils have different saponification values.

    • @codybrookehanson2346
      @codybrookehanson2346 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried freezing coconut milk into cubes for my first soap and it seriously overheated on me, cracked through and ashed. It was usable but so ugly. I still have less than desirable effects when I use milk and I've made about 10 batches, the 3 I've done without milk have turned out beautifully. I love the idea of using milks, but I'm still trying to get it figured out.
      Also with the oils, as Ellen said, you have to run all substitutions through a calculator. Really the only substitution that I've found that is generally safe (still not recommended) is canola oil for olive oil and vice versa. Again, any sub should always be run through the calculator, but canola and olive have similar sap values and in an emergency could be subbed safely - but I'm a new soaper too so don't take my word for gospel.

      @@mzcrystalg sure thing, I'm just a stay at home mom and have become obsessed with soaping so I've fully immersed myself in the research so I can fully understand it. People like Ellen have way more experience than I do but even with all the info she and others share, you want to make sure that you understand what it is you're doing and trying to achieve in order to get desirable results. And results can vary for each batch every when using the same recipe depending on a number of factors, that's why it's important to research for yourself as well. It can seem daunting but it really isn't once you start researching and putting it into practice.

    this is great just a few.tips.for people trying tk do this as the video can be a bit dengerous if done it 1-1
    1. you should wait a minimum of 3 weeks where 1-3 months is advised even longer. before its safe to use the soap
    the fact its solid doesn't mean its safe to use.
    2. some Fragrance oil really accelerates the trace.so optionally you would want to add them last not with the oils at the start
    3. please if u ever plan this use safety gear, goggles being the first.one. if a drop of that water lye mixture will fly into your eye you will be in a lot.of problem and need.to go get.medical care. goggpes is the first thing u should buy before the oil even
    also if a drop of the soap mixture will fly.to.ur eye it hardens there and its messy, buy goggles please.
    4. also very recomended to buy a thermometer to check the temperature of lye and oils they should be +- same tempreture so dont put hot lye in cold oil (like in this video)
    its very dangerous and can ruin your soap.
    give you lye water mixture 1-2 hours to cool before hand and also advised is to start off from ice and lye not water and lye it will keep it cooler
    5. use a soap capulator to know exactly how much lye to use
    6. saying a bar of soap will cost so little is simply wrong
    soap making is a very expensive hobby once your getting into it,
    Fregrence is like 8usd for 60ml thats for 1 bar
    olive oil, shea butter coconut oil, lye,
    colors
    its much closer in real life to 1-2 usd a piece of soap.
    it comes up to +- 15-25usd per full tray that cuts 12 soaps
    if ur not buying bulk thats the prices.
    this is an expensive hobby but very fun.

    Is it possible to use other oils or more of one kind??

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely change up the recipe, but you'd need to run all the numbers thru a soap calc, because oils have different saponification values

    Can this recipe be used with pine tar. Never made soap before and want to try

    • @EllenRuthSoap

      I’ve not worked with pine tar, but have read that it can speed up trace. As this is a fast moving recipe, I might try a different soap recipe for that..

    One more question, I see you are using salt and sugar in the lye mixture, and it immediately made me wonder what would happen if we used some magnesium salt?
    I already have some good homemade “magnesium oil” (magnesium salt dissolved in hot distilled water).

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure? But it sounds interesting and worth some research 😉

      @@EllenRuthSoap Thank you. I googled it, and it looks like the internet is saying that magnesium flakes tend to cause soap to have less lather, and also a greasy or slimy feel. So I guess it’s a no-go for me, as a beginner.

    I just found your channel and love watching. I haven’t made soap for a long time and am going to get back into it. Could you tell me please how long the print area was on your stamp when you ordered it and did you have to contact them to let them know what you wanted? I couldn’t figure out first how long to order a stamp. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Ellen Ruth,
    Love this video! I’ve never made cold process soap, but you have inspired me. Does this soap have to cure for 4-6 weeks?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a full cure time is best (4-6 weeks)

      Yes, regular milk powder would be good, really any milk powder is nice in soap.

    Wow! The soap turned out really great, however, I did use not enough EO and it turned out strange smelling. Is it possible to reheat the bars in a crockpot and add more EO? I saw your video about the soap scraps but I am not sure if I can do the same with whole bars.

    New soaper here!! I love your videos! I want to make soap using fresh goats milk instead of water. I’ve read that after cutting it needs to sit for 4-8 weeks before you can use it. How is it that you are using a sample piece after only 48 hours of curing ???

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, welcome to soaping! After 48 hours the lye is fully saponified and neutral (i.e. skin safe), the long cure time produces a milder and harder bar. All the extra liquid evaporates during the cure, so it's longer lasting.

    Excellent video! I calculated the amount of lye needed for each of my oils and fats for my recipe. I plugged my numbers in to the sage calculator just to check my work. I’m a newbie and to make sure I got the right measurements. The calculator did not have vegetable shortening because the shortening has it more than one type of vegetable used to make the oil. Just curious about what you think about this. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing!

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      typically vegetable shortening is a combo of soybean and palm. Some calculators have "crisco" listed (which is a veg shortening)...
