  • Android P has a new way to navigate your phone: gestures. But in the early beta they're not very good yet. In this episode of Processor, Dieter looks at why Google might have created the new system (and, yes, he breaks out his Palm Pre 3). Subscribe: goo.gl/G5RXGs

      Keep the button, maybe make it slightly longer. Swiping left would be back, swiping up would stay the same, swiping right would stay the same, swiping down would take you home. Get rid of the back button.

    This is also what makes the Taptic engine so great. When I swipe up on my iPhone I get physical feedback. It's very satisfying. Anyways, really nice to see WebOS, that design was ahead of it's time.

      Android P Beta on the Pixel 2 now gives physical feedback when swiping down the notification shade, so Google seems to be adding physical feedback touches that are similar to iOS.
      The haptic feeback on the Pixel 2 is still not as great as Apples Taptic Engine but it's one of the better haptic feedback engines for Android phones and I'm glad they are following Apple with these small details that use haptic feedback

      Yup, Taptic on iOS makes the device feel alive and interactive. Subtle little bumps here and there and no horrid buzzes. I'm surprised no other OEM has copied it, although I hear LG has a very good implementation for the G series.

      With Android P users will be able to decide if they want to use the new gestures, or stick to the navigation buttons that they were use to. To me this is a better implementation than Apples iPhone X. Because with that device you only have gestures and that is your only choice.

    This might sound very weird but this is how I'd do the gestures:
    Home: tap the home button
    Back: swipe the home button left
    Recent apps: swipe the home button right
    App drawer: swipe up as normal
    Switch to last app: swipe left or right from the edge of the screen (although I'm not sure if this what Apple does with it's gesture UI)

    • @finlaymcewan
      @finlaymcewan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think swiping the home button is quite fiddly, and it would just be cleaner to have 3 buttons

  • @SendFoodz
    @SendFoodz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    the biggest reason for this is the removal of buttons on phones. having an always on navigation row defeats the purpose of removing the buttons for all screen. and using swipe up to toggle navigation bar CONSTANTLY causes unintentional inputs. so that's why Google is focusing on this right now.

  • @Sacchidanand
    @Sacchidanand 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

  • @djfoo000
    @djfoo000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    That comment on jank is pretty spot on. Early builds of Androids didn't catch on because they were janky. Non-vanilla builds of Android was hated on because they were janky. Jank pretty much permeates throughout the history of Android. Gestures must convey a cohesive UX, and any jank will kill that immersion.

      Apart from the ‘up’ gesture, I personally don’t see much resemblance between Android P and BB10. Android P’s gestures and UI are a lot closer to webOS and also the OS on the Blackberry Playbook (because it was a shameless copy of webOS)

    • @TheVerge
      @TheVerge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah we cut for time, it would have added a whole nother few minutes, honestly. I think because so many Android apps use the swipe-in from the left to open the drawer, their hands were a little tied. It's possible that they could have done a webOS-style swipe-right in the gesture area, but I guess that doesn't add much? I think Android will get there (see: moving the drawer to the bottom on newer Google Android apps), but it's going to take some time. - Dieter

    • @MiteshShah07
      @MiteshShah07 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah it would have definitely made a much longer video. I thought they could maybe do it by having you swipe the home button to the left for back. It definitely doesn't flow as well but I'm sure they'll get to it soon.
      I also hope they can reduce the size of the navigation bar after they do move completely to gestures.

    Just came upon this video now. Been experimenting with gestures recently. Three things: 1. I'd love to have a black bar below the keyboard in place of where the navbar used to be. 2. I'd like to have the ability to use navbar and gestures *together*, not either/or. 3. Sometimes accidentally pressing the full screen indicator hides the keyboard. Shud be a way to turn that off.

    You show the sliding function on the table itself, but how is it in the hand? To hold your finger at the very bottom of the screen waiting for the app sliding animation to play might not be very ergonomic, whereas for the iPhone X switching apps is just a matter of flicks.
    The multitasking app cards of the iPhone X are also much closer, so to get from the 1st app to the 5th is no effort at all while the spacing on Android P looks like we need to swipe more, which is just an extra effort.
    My favourite gestures are actually the 3D touch multitasking on the sides of the iPhone 7 and 8 because that's where my thumb resides

    Dieter kills it as usual. Google “has to nail the animation and smoothness.” Well said Dieter. I hope all the hard work that Google’s “Project Butter” team did years ago to polish the Android UI and get it to where it is today does not go to waste.
    But I gotta say...the real star of this video is the actual “video editing and graphics”. So if that was done by Garret Beard, job well done. Loved the effect at 1:28 and the concept of using a phone on the table with the different open apps overlayed on top. The set with the couch in the center was a nice touch but it was even more impressive how the space around the center (i.e. the left and right sidewalls) were used to display the two graphic images of Android and iOS. Beautiful!!
    Lastly, kudos to the production team for cramming so much useful content and delivering it in a 7 minute format that did not feel rushed at all.

    FINALLY a channel that actually adresses the janky animations on Android. I know it's gotten better over the years but even flagships still don't have smooth transitions, get stuck, have framerate issues. This is not acceptable anymore in 2018. If an Iphone 6 is smoother then my S9 this is clearly an issue Google has to fix. And some transitions still are really bad (text messages, keyboard pop up (and how screen above keyboard gets lifted up), url bar pop up links, google assistant word recognition etc) I really hope other channels will point this out too.

      There is no way an iphone 6 is a smooth as an S9 especially if it runs iOS 11.
      I tested quite a few ios phones through the course of the years(6s, 7 plus, 8 plus, SE) and this hole lagginess and jankiness regarding Android is overly exaggerated. iphone 8 plus is far from perfectly smooth and yes you can see frame drops and stutter on occasions.

      I used to use an htc 3 years ago and then switched to moto. • @DragonofStorm
    @DragonofStorm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some opinion on that, would be happy if you comment:
    a) Why *remove navbar buttons*:
    1. Swiping gestures are more accurate (you cannot tip so easily on the wrong position)
    2. Swiping gestures have the potential of reducing the navbar space to a minimum (or maybe completely?) for more screen space
    3. Swiping gestures are "cooler" to use (less choppy tipping; more smooth swiping)
    b) I personally *don't like the new recent apps overview*. Yes, you can use this analogy with shifting on the desk, but that doesn't make this great. The vertical overview is much better in my opinion (like a well organized document register not just some stuff on the desk), because
    1. the app icon and especially the names are vertical, which is MUCH better for having an instant overview which apps are there (e.g. I also use TreeStyleTab Addon in my Desktop Browser, it gives a much better overview than the horizontal tab alignment, try yourself and use some tabs ),
    2. to see more apps (not just 2) it's better to show the apps overlaid and giving the first apps more room to better see the content (but you still see what apps you can exspect "behind", better overview),
    3. Moving the apps with a slider instead of directly touching and moving, how is that intuitive?
    c) Why doesn't Google add *One hand mode*? E.g. like in lineageOS, it's really nice there. Smartphones are getting bigger and bigger and there are less producers of small smartphones, recently the only model is xz2 compact by sony (which camera isn't that great). I understand that a big screen is useful for many things (watching some video e.g.), but I still want a completely easy one hand usage (even if you have small hands), just bring a one hand mode for that? I find it extremely intuitive and easy to use how lineageOS implemented that. Please add that, please :).
    What do you think, are there other reasons why adding swiping gestures etc.?

    Lineage OS has this cool gesture function Where you have your normal nav bar with its 3 standard buttons. And swiping left or right on it shrinks the screen down to the side you swiped. The one handed mode. Feels natural af. And is much needed on all these tall phones coming out.
    When you do gestures+buttons together, you can get the most functionality from the system.

    If I was a gesture coder... I would have a little circle at the bottom with a little shadow over whatever you were on, but when you press it 3 other circles roll out (animation) across that side of the screen with built in options like home, back, screen recorder/screenshot, and overview. When you drug that single circle to the edge of your screen, it would become fully transparent, but you tap on that edge of the screen it rolls out into the corner of your display.

      You do know that the UX architect and design for the Palm WebOS interface and gestures Matias Duarte is now the head of design at Google. So technically he's just taking back his idea now and re-implementing it. Even if it is in any way copying, that word is no longer relevant sa iOS is heavily based on other mobile OSes too. The idea of X is copying Y is getting old.

    • @gabe4933
      @gabe4933 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. I'm an Android fan myself, but it's clearly obvious that the only reason why Google is doing this is because apple has. In future thinking, Google realizes that all of the next generation of iPhones will feature this gesture based operating system. And they realized that if they want people to be comfortable with their operating system if they decide to switch, they need to have something familiar and useful. Hence the gestures. I'm considering making the jump back to iOS just because of this year. It's proven that the industry will not try to really inovate or change unless apple does it first. So iPhones now look like the first to get the great features going forward.

    Reposting my comment from IO here....
    The implementation of the gestures and navigation bar feels one foot in one foot out. I don't like that there are two ways to open the multitasking, also the swipe up for app drawer is a finicky gesture, sometimes it just opens the multitasking carousel.
    I would suggest going all out on the pill like so:
    Swipe LEFT on the pill for back
    Swipe RIGHT on the pill for multitasking
    Scrub RIGHT for quick app switching
    Swipe UP on the pill for app drawer
    Tap pill to go home
    1) This eliminates the confusion of two methods to enter multitasking
    2) The swipe right for multitasking will open the carousel (not switch to last app), retain the new scrubbing feature to give the functionality of switching between recent apps.
    3) Remove the suggested apps and search from carousel as they are already accessible from swipe up for app drawer with slices too. Will clean up the carousel.
    3) The swipe up for app drawer from anywhere will give quicker access to the new app slices as it is currently two swipes away. This retains the app predictions in the drawer too.
    4) Saves space by having a gesture pill overlay instead of the still present nav bar.
    .... And please at least give us the option to move the clock back to the right, the amount of times I glance up thinking the white text is a notification bugs me.

      The argument of "Android is better/worse than iOS" is completely stupid. At their core, they essentially provide the same function. Some features are done better on one OS than the other. The point is, you can choose. Some people prefer iOS and some prefer Android. Personally, I switched from iOS to Android and I love it - because it suits me. However, what suits someone changes for each individual. Telling someone their choice is wrong isn't the way to go since their choices are based on personal taste
