Previous Renault Sport Meganes have always been the best hot hatches for keen drivers. This new third generation adds four-wheel steering but also two extra doors. Henry Catchpole reviews both Sport Chassis and Cup Chassis variants on track and an amazing mountain road in Spain...

I had a 265 Rd in 2013 and 2014. I just don't think 6 years later that 0-100 isn't more like 5 to 5.2... they have had a lot if time. it's also no longer look as curvy any more .. was part of my attachment.. it's biting my square and corporate looking. There is no adrenalin rush for me. As I get older, I have reverted to a brilliant saloon car .. made in Germany .. tuned to perfection by Aussie engineers.. it is called a Holden Commodore ZB 4 CYLINDER 2 LITRE PETROL TURBO with 191kw and 350nm of torque. Stunning car so underrated so unwanted but so good so quick, so agile, such great grip , superb brakes immediately reassure you. It's Vauxhall in UK.. .but those who gave driven both the Aussie tuned and the non tuned say this aussie tunex Commodore is far superior. It's so cheap to buy.. it is a star performer.

Renault always bet for driving experience, agility, precision, sensations.... not dragsters with impressive quarter mile times, not ultra effective and railway guidded cars, not dramatic/tacky/overdesigned cars.... definitively, they make cars for driving, for drivers. This is the first version, the more affordable, demmanded and selling. The next 300 hp Trophy will be needed to beat some rivals in terms of lap times and acceleration, but the driving pleasure, fun and appealing, I think this new RS is the best option in the market even with "only" 280 hp. How powerfull are a Golf GTi, OPC, i30N, 308 GTi?. Leon Cupra with 20 hp (less than 10%) more is the only rival in the same level of price more powerful. Golf R, Type-R and Focus RS have much power, but they are in other level of price too.
We must be happy for all the cars like this, I can't understand some critics.

Make it a test between Megane RS, i30N, Peugeot 308 GTi and the upcoming Astra OPC. Everyone that isn't badge biased already knows the Golf can't keep up with the competition, unless you review it on comfort and interior (which isn't what hot hatches are about) and the Type R tbh is a step up, both in price and performance. Maybe compare Type R to the future i30N Fastback (supposedly it will get 300 hp) and the Leon Cupra 300.

I have the old one, the 265 and I agree...except the Recaro bucket seats, maybe some people feel they are more racing, but for everyday use, the leather seats are just perfect, drove 8 hours without stoping once, not a single pain when I got out of the car and they are supportive enough on twisty mountain roads. If I wouldn't live ina country with very low penalties even for extreme speeding, I'd probably get some proper sparco racing seats, absoluty abisimal on road, but perfect for the track.

They got that front design Spot On!, - really dynamic, wide and the lines spines towards the tarmac like it want´s to grip - still emotional and on the bold side curves and surfaces, but not forced into extreme - Though it must be said... is makes no doubt about it´s sporty credentials to non car person. - The upper LED´s reinforces and frames the width of the front and... the lower LED´s are simply a beautiful and fresh interpretation of the MotorSport chequered flag. Not only does it sit between the GTi, Type-R but also the Cupra should be included, since the Megane RS will certainly also appeal to that Market Segment the ways it looks. Great Review and Footage, Thanks Carfection!. I´d really like to know more about the Manual Gear set up, for the next review of this car. And it looks like well done Renault Sport - A great mature Hot Hatch that sits in the segment right were it should.

I own RenaultSport product and i would choose between this Megane and i30N (as Civic in my country costs absolutely insane amount of money, they lost their mind in Honda really). Just from the keyboard it is hard to tell, but so far it looks like i would choose i30N because it is build for driver pleasure, not for best times on Nurburgring. If you plan to go to circuit a lot, than it is typeR without a doubt, but that applies to small minority of customers overall. We dont know the prices of Megane yet, so thats also a thing, but i30N is fairly cheap. Only thing i really dont like on i30N is interior, esp. a tablet "standing" on top of air vents. But hell, its still drivers car so i would opt to overlook that.
//edit Also Civic looks horrible exteriorwise, like a car for teenagers who loves transformers. i30N is fine and Megane is by far best looking (personal experience in Frankfurt).

Well, Paul, just for you... I would obviously have a manual because I'm a three pedal sort of person. However, although I was disappointed we could only drive the DCT version on the road (and I was a bit worried after the travesty that was the Clio's 'box) the paddle shift is actually pretty good. The only thing I didn't like with it (and I think this must have been cut from the edit of the video) was that the paddles are slightly too short. They're attached to the steering column rather than the wheel (which I like) but they need to extend a bit further downwards. From my brief drive in the manual Cup Chassis car, the manual felt ok, but not the most weighty and solid of shifts.

    • @paulj3625
      @paulj3625 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Where I live, the prices with oficial promotions are:
29.900 € for manual, 31.900 € for EDC and Chasis Cup as option for 1.700 €.
    Some rivals with official discounts and promos shows this prices in their webpages. Leon Cupra 31.600 €. Hyundai i30 N 250 hp 27.900 €. I30 N 275 hp Performance 32.000 €. 308 GTi 32.150 €. Golf Gti 230 hp, 34.900 €. Gti Performance 245 hp 37.000 €. Civic Type-R base 38.400 €. Type-R GT, Golf R or Focus RS, are over 40.000 €.
Well, I think at least here in Spain this car is very competitive. What about other countries?. It's worth for the money?.

Totally agree, but sadly see too many hurdles to jump without the sales to justify the effort (despite the Nissan presence here). If Europe and the US could harmonize crash tests and emissions regs, it would help a lot. I think this Megane would make the Type R and RS nervous (despite the lack of hp) the Trophy version is going to be something else. Catchpole is right about the styling - nice mix of Golf R vs Type R.

This could be rebadged as a Nissan Sentra hatch with the trophy model being on top.after all it is a Nissan riding on a Renault chassis.

Golf has been obsolete since it's 6th iteration. The Focus RS is still faster than this.

The RS is not faster than this on a track or in the mountain roads, on a straight line maybe but who cares

Just like the Focus RS supposedly being slower than the Type R.... Until videos came out where it was actually faster... Oops.

No it wasn't, quite a let down from Renault here, they needed a 350bhp monster to keep up, 295bhp and maybe later? What have they been doing for hte past three years?

Maybe I'm subjective because i have the old Megane RS, the 265, but I find the new one absolutly hideous compared to the old one who had nice round shapes. The old one looks friendly but also scary, the new one is an agressive bully, a angry bouncer like some auto journalists seen it. Neither I neither other Megane RS Coupe owners don't like the 4 door one. Yeah it's more practical but that's it. I'm totally a Renault fan, the only dealership in my small mountain town is a Renault dealer, but seriously I'd buy the new civic over the new RS. And there's a new Megane RS Coupe... it's called the Veloster N. :P

Those outrages daytime LED's brake it. Would have looked so much better without. The (fake) central exhaust also doesn't fit this one as good as it did the former generation. Imo the Megane II and Megane III looked better and more distinct than this one, without being over the top like a Type R.
