Did the same thing on an early-2008 20inch iMac. With it's 2.4Ghz Core2Duo, 6gbs of DDR2 ram, and a lil' 128gb SSD, it's running Catalina surprisingly nicely!
I'm actually watching this video with this same exact iMac ! I've been using it since 2009, it still works great, even if it's not as fast as before (changed the RAM from 1GO to 8GO). Can't believe i bought it 1099€ and now it doesn't cost anything anymore, how sad is that
Well done cleaning and restoring the 20" Early 2009 iMac! I have a 24" Early 2008 iMac which is STILL my main computer after 11 years. Over its lifetime I've maxed the RAM from a paltry 2G to 6GB and swapped the 500GB HDD for a 240GB SanDisk SSD. Earlier in the year the ATI Radeon 2600 Pro 256MB GPU died. Fortunately I sourced the exact same model iMac (the top end model, mine's the next one down) on Gumtree 20 minutes away, dead HDD and bad cosmetics selling for parts. I first disassembled my iMac and gave everything a good clean. Then I swapped out the entire logic board with its 2.8GHz C2D CPU to the top-of-the-line 3.06GHz, swapped the dead GPU with the top end NVIDIA GeForce 8800GS 512MB and swapped the LCD display too, which was in great shape. I now practically have a new iMac! That said, it's showing its age. It's stuck on El Capitan, Safari runs slow although 1080/60 TH-cam videos plays smoothly. Chrome is a little slow if multiple tabs are open. Google maps in Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari is a slideshow, although the Google Earth app and built-in Maps app works absolutely fine. CSGO used to play well a few years back but now it's a slideshow. Outside of those situations the computer works great. I will be using it for the next year or two but I do anticipate finally getting a new iMac.
I have a late 2009 27" iMac and after two failed HDDs (one under warranty, the other not), I bought a 1TB SSD and had it installed. Love it and after 11 years it's still going strong. I reckon I will have it for the rest of my life. I'd like to change out the screen though because there are some faint vertical lines on it that you can see only on a dark screen. But they are so faint it doesn't bother me that much. I don't know why people say these only last a few years. They can last forever with only a few parts changed and mine is proof.
When I heard you saying 42 degrees I was like "That seems cold", cuz I thought that Australia like USA uses Fahrenheit. Well, I was wrong, you literally have the temperature I have.. ..on 20th day of June.
Only the US uses Fahrenheit, and even then, a lot of our science and industry types use the metric system. NASA is all-metric now, to the best of my knowledge. Computer core temperatures are almost always expressed in Celcius, even in the U.S. All of the US scales (Fahrenheit, miles, etc.) are defined based on metric scales, and no longer based on the old definitions (although very, very close to the old values). So the entire world is pretty much metric, only the U.S. has a facade of using an imperial scale (which is actually defined by metric units)
Australia went to fully metric measures in 1973, having switched to decimal currency in 1966. However imperial measurements are still used for marketing purposes with Tyres (like the rest of the world, Michelin TRX metric sizes never caught on). In the days of CRTs, they were all sold in centimetres, but since flatscreen technologies have reverted to being marketed in inches. Apparently the smaller numbers inches are expressed in are easier for consumers to remember, which was a reason given for the failure of Michelin TRX Tyres as well. A 16” tyre is easier to remember than a 390mm tyre
found one for $50 dollars on craigslist, brought it home, set it up, reinstalled macOS (was used at a school and was locked up) and now I use it all the time.
I have an iMac (early 2009). It used to be my main computer for a long time until I upgraded my pc in around 2015. I still have it in my closet to this day and open it once in a while

These are some of the best looking (and functioning) computers Apple has ever produced. It's great seeing them getting a new lease on life with these restorations. I personally have a 2011 Core i5 21.5" that I love and hope to put a Core i9 in someday to keep it peppy.
@@dragontechroyale4k447 pay 700 dollars for a phone with the same specs as a 300 dollar one. only difference between them being the software, the hardware design and the 400 dollar apple tax.
I’m mixed on that one. Can you get a slightly better gaming pc for that $1,100 price tag? Yes. But you can’t really travel with a gaming pc like you can with a laptop, or even an iMac.

love your work... i also live in australia, i have just picked up a 2010 iMac 21.5 and would like to pop a SSD into it. we aren't as blessed here as the US for access to economical SSD's, so what do you suggest domestically ? cheers
Nice video! I am still using the same machine for basic work. I wrote my phd thesis on this mac, but also played half-life 2 for example. And way too much minecraft... All in all a good investment. 😁
I'm watching this on this exact model iMac I got new for my 9th birthday. It sits on my desk in my room at home while my newer pc (from 2014) is in my college dorm. I only upgraded the RAM, everything else is original. It runs ok on Mac OS 10.9 and loads stuff really slow because it still has the original HDD. IMO the design of this generation iMac looks better from the front than the newer designs (late 2009 and on). The design is almost reminiscent of the 60s but still looks more modern than later designs. I wish I could say the same about the hardware, which is basically like a mid-range laptop from 2009 that's in an AIO chassis. I'm tempted to upgrade the CPU. I did a lot on this iMac, and still have a ton of my files from 2009 when I first got it, hence why I don't want to replace the HDD with an SSD. I haven't wiped the hard drive at all either, I only updated it from Mac OS 10.5 to 10.6, and then to 10.9. I also made my TH-cam and Minecraft accounts on this computer in 2011, and you can see it in some of my earliest videos, which I made private because they were too cringey. It basically does everything an iPad does, except it's less powerful than any iPad after 2013 and it isn't portable. I'd say it holds up very well after 10 years! Not sure about the newer Apple computers, though...
if the old files you have in there are valuable to you then you should probably back them up on some sort of storage device just in case in something happens to it, speaking from personal experience, it's always good to have at least 2 backups of data
@@haru9666 Yes I have been backing it up every now and then. The HDD seems perfectly fine, but I know it has a lot of wear on it, so I don't trust it that much.
This just brings back highschool memories where the art/graphics design lab had a these big chungus imacs and oh boy were they slow to use, still a great machine and this exact model was my first experience with Apple computers (despite all its flaws it got me into the apple ecosystem and I couldn’t be happier with the MacBooks I used over the years)
It's amazing to how those things are cheap out there. Here in Brazil you cannot find one of those for less than R$1000 (currently equal to 200 dollars). I actually own two of those. One of them I still use (with ssd), and I'm trying to sell the other one. They are very solid machines. The display still looks flawless. Totally usable today for basic stuff...

How to see if the Apple Mac works...
Awesome video! Still using my 2009 iMac.
Wait... that’s my computer xD
Nice Mac Review. good to see these old machines still up and running.
What was the CPU? (what core 2 Duo?)
Apple really knows how to do timeless design. This computer still looks fairly modern and I wouldn’t mind having the smaller size iMac on my desk
A graphics school in my town just replaced most of these iMacs with new ones. I might try to get one of them😂
Watching these old machines getting back to life is so satisfying 💙
"The original sticker covering the Apple logo is still stuck on." That's the most Asian thing I've ever heard in this video.
@jake vibe check
Heh, I do the same with my guitars' pickguard.

I have an iMac (early 2009). It used to be my main computer for a long time until I upgraded my pc in around 2015. I still have it in my closet to this day and open it once in a while
Plastic still on a 10 year old computer sounds like my parents computers!!😂
Its crazy how old apple tech still looks modern.
I have my 2008 iMac and. It still runs to this day.
Yep , same here , upgrading tomorrow but she has been an amazing journey . Have seen friends go through many computers that still don't hold up as well as the 2008 Imac .
Finally a tech TH-camr with a sence of humour
I might be crazy but isnt “grounding” yourself to the very board you’re working on utterly useless?
No, it equalises the charge between you and the board preventing any sudden discharges, same way you ground yourself to the case when you build a pc.
Yes. Ground *means GROUND* aka "mains earth" here in the UK.
@@dylanhopkins3640 in case of a pc case (punny...) you would ground yourself to the psu, not just the case
If you touch a local ground and discharge any static you have, you can then safely touch the chassis and ground to it. No problem.
Honestly the chance of static discharge is the chance of being hit by a lightning bolt and run over by a car in an underground bunker.
These are some of the best looking (and functioning) computers Apple has ever produced. It's great seeing them getting a new lease on life with these restorations. I personally have a 2011 Core i5 21.5" that I love and hope to put a Core i9 in someday to keep it peppy.
"Does More. Costs Less."
Well that aged like milk.
Now it's "Does less, Costs more"
what about the iPhone 11 and 16" MBP...
@@dragontechroyale4k447 pay 700 dollars for a phone with the same specs as a 300 dollar one. only difference between them being the software, the hardware design and the 400 dollar apple tax.
@@dragontechroyale4k447 and also i could build a pc better than than the 16 inch macbook pro and it would cost me less than 1k
I’m mixed on that one. I was looking a lot at pc and Mac prices for Black Friday, and a factory refurbished 2019 13” MacBook Pro with a 4 core i5, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd cost as much as a surface pro, thinkpad, or xps with the exact same specs. Can you get a slightly better gaming pc for that $1,100 price tag? Yes. But you can’t really travel with a gaming pc like you can with a laptop, or even an iMac.
Your content is therapeutic...
9:26 now i see it, finally
This got randomly suggested to me. It’s so satisfying to watch !!
It’s my birthday today!!!
The best b day because you uploaded :)
zehshi happy birthday

MarcoC978 thanks!
Still going strong on my Mid-2007 iMac. Great video mate!
"the Design has held up well" because it hasn't changed in10 years substantialy😂😂😂😂
A lot thinner and nearly impossible to get inside though.
🏳️🌈 Lillian Charles 🏳️⚧️ yes, sadly
Ah. A calming restoration video to start my day.
This is the computer my family still uses to this day
These iMacs bring me back such good memories.
I still use the 2008 iMac 😅
can you play 1080p youtube vids ?
Laser Beam yes
Yep , same here , upgrading tomorrow but she has been an amazing journey . Have seen friends go through many computers that still don't hold up as well as the 2008 Imac .
Harry Hoban & The Brothers Kane Same here. Modern Cromebooks don’t stand a chance to my old 2008.
i do really enjoy your resurrection vidos. i learn a lot about the inside of macs too. thanks
10:00 look the monitor!
I dont see anything
Person: How many computers do you want?
Psivewri: Yes
I do like the look of iMac PCs.
how does my late 2009 macbook score over 100 points higher in cinebench than this imac from the same year?😂
Better mobile processor probably since this was the base model, ergo the cheapest.
Axel Brito yeah but it is fairly easy to upgrade. My mother iMac was upgraded to a 3.0Ghz Core2Duo... it a normal lga775
I was literally thinking about one of your videos 30 seconds ago, then this came out. Can't wait to watch it!
So you're telling me a 10 year old mac is still very usable while a 10 year old PC is borderline useless now?
If you have a PC that cost 1999$ in 2009, then it will still be very usable.
Le Docteur mac works better for longer it seems. I still prefer pc tho
it is all about the ssd. If you put an ssd in any old computer + also give it a good clean with new thermal paste it will instantly become much more usable.
Opticon could not agree more
My 2008 version still in use with 6gig ram and 250gb ssd. only thong i had to do once was replace the backlight power supply (IIRC) as there was a a dull area.
is it me or can u hear him licking his mouth after every sentence
Wow.. 2009 still rocking "iMac " loves your videos a lot.. wish i was in Australia!!!
Wow you just called out every single youtuber that just point with arrows and circles in their thumbs.
I like that
Finally an Australian tech youtuber!!
HI mate, I just watched this video today and noticed that just like the day you filmed this, today was again42 degrees in Adelaide as i was watching this too. Hope you stayed cool today...I spent the whole day in the air conditioning. All the best. Steve from Adelaide.
love your work...
i also live in australia, i have just picked up a 2010 iMac 21.5 and would like to pop a SSD into it.
we aren't as blessed here as the US for access to economical SSD's, so what do you suggest domestically ?
cheers
Love these iMac restore videos!
Nice video well done - nice to see an Aussie doing these.
Nice video! I am still using the same machine for basic work. I wrote my phd thesis on this mac, but also played half-life 2 for example. And way too much minecraft... All in all a good investment. 😁
Please bring back the old camera angle. It was so good
I'm watching this on this exact model iMac I got new for my 9th birthday.
I swear- all of the australian tech youtubers always have iconic words-
This just brings back highschool memories where the art/graphics design lab had a these big chungus imacs and oh boy were they slow to use, still a great machine and this exact model was my first experience with Apple computers (despite all its flaws it got me into the apple ecosystem and I couldn’t be happier with the MacBooks I used over the years)
i love seeing the insides of macs and pcs! thanks for making this awesome content
The Back of the Mac is so cool looking. I think it looks better than the grey ones...
i gt the same old imac ... change te os for windows to use the last version of itrunes. -nice video. grettings from venezuela
Totally usable today for basic stuff...
brazil has an weird floor for prices. not matter how shitty something is, it'll never really be cheap.
