Over the past couple of years I've had several Macs from this era which were "not working" and it turns out the only real problem was that the HDD had gone bad. Good clean-out, SSD and RAM upgrades and they're perfectly usable.
@@sneedsneed460 that's exactly it. You can always put an SSD in the optical bay and not have to worry about the HDD temp sensor. You don't even need a carrier for the optical bay, you can just use some double-sided tape to secure the SSD to the back of the machine. It will be faster and you'll have the HDD for a Time Machine backup, or media drive.

I got mine (exactly the same) in the trash too, infact all of my Apple machines other than my 2016 MacBook Pro have come from our local recycle center. My iMac had the typical video card failure issues which I sent to Greece and had fixed there. Been perfect ever since and I love this machine with an SSD upgrade it still a great everyday internet surfer, and as you mentioned the display is brilliant. BTW because its a 2011 you also have thunderbolt 2. Probably the most important/versatile ports and you didn't mention them at all :-)
Whilst not as serendipitous as your situation, i was gifted a 2010 21.5" iMac. I installed an SSD and just used strong velcro to hold it in place instead of an adaptor, and installed a program called SSD Fan Control. Worked a treat.
I found an early 2011 Macbook Pro in the bin this week, put it in an old charger I had laying around and it booted right up to the account of the original owner. Turned it off and left it charging, a day later it wouldn't turn on again, found out the on/off button was broken. Took off the bottom cover and disconnected the battery, put in the charger and it booted right up again. Think the previous owner just thought it was completely dead, but it's actually perfectly fine except if you turn it off manually.

In fact, I have a 2011 iMac 21.5" and once I needed to completely reinstall MacOS as it was running Ubuntu. I loaded up network recovery, and using Disk utility I cleared the hard disk. The installer was for OS X Lion, but it never got past the downloading phase. After retrying it a couple times, eventually it would just get stuck loading network recovery entirely. I then booted a Ubuntu live USB and used GParted to reformat the drive (I think I did it with HFS+) and reloaded into Network Recovery, and this time it wanted to install High Sierra. I reformatted (again, but instead through Disk Utility) and got the install running, and it was then able to complete the install and I had the system running MacOS High Sierra. This may in fact be something you should've tried on the Mac and it could've gotten the hard drive working again, and I hope this would be helpful in the future.

Back in the day, and in the day, i mean we used to use DataRecorders to load/save programs in the 80s, sometimes our parents used to ground us by "pretending" they were throwing our things in the bin to teach us lessons. But then sneak out and give it back to us when we did our homework. Just saying, maybe you finding this in the bin was during one of those lessons 🤣. Nice salvage though. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful machines, but have faulty graphic cards. I bought mine second hand for about 700$, two weeks later the 6970 1 GB GPU failed. I paid someone to order and install a used GPU - this time 2GB. It worked for a year and the GPU failed again. Some time passed and I was considering trashing it as I didn't want to put more money in it, but a few days ago I decided to take it apart and bake the GPU, like I've seen on TH-cam. I did everything like they said, managed to put it back together and now it's working! I'm guessing it will fail again but this repair cost me total of 25$ and now I have a working machine. Congrats on yours, how is it holding up?
Amazing video-love the camerawork, your detailed knowledge/explanation, and overall story. I just got home from finding one myself and am trying to figure out how to wipe the drive clean.
It always amazes me how people throw away their money. I found a Mac Book Pro mid 2012 that works perfectly. The people that had it bought a new one at Best Buy and just left the old one near the trash. THANKS!!!
Nice find! I found 3 PS2 consoles in the trash. They all still boot up but disc drives don’t really work. Also long time ago found a old Mac classic laying outside. I left it indoor to dry out for a few days and test to see if it works. It works just fine no problems.
I got the exact same model iMac last week. A coworked didn't have the fortitude to figure out why his computer wouldn't boot after a weird crash, so he gifted it to me. Didn't take me long to figure out that the hard drive (1TB Barracuda) was dead. Swapped it out for a new 2 TB Barracuda.
I have four mid 2011 27's. One of them is a i5-2400 with 1GB VRAM AMD 6970M. It is a perfectly capable machine. I bought a broken 6970M with 2GB VRAM for cheap and fixed it will a nice bake. Going from 1GB to 2GB VRAM is a worthwhile upgrade. Speed is noticeably better.
Is it really that much of an improvement? I'm looking into different GPU options for my 2011 27" iMac. I revived the original 6970M 1GB with a heat gun (and yes, I know that the heat gun method is not the safest) and it's been working great for a couple months now. I'm using this iMac to reply to this comment right now. If the 2GB option would be that much of an improvement then I may look into it.
@@jamiechampion299 If you are impatient and borderline OCD, then worth it...at the right price. 6970M 1GB will play 2.5k 60 fps just fine. The 2GB card is marginally but noticeably faster to load and play videos. I do not edit video or photos but I am guessing the extra VRAM helps with handling large files. I noticed a speed difference after upgrade with i5 and i7. BTW, there is a way to get 2GB for about 1/4 of China price.

Over the past couple of years I've had several Macs from this era which were "not working" and it turns out the only real problem was that the HDD had gone bad. Good clean-out, SSD and RAM upgrades and they're perfectly usable.
This is giving me iMacenstein PTSD haha... Hopefully you have better luck than I did

0:08 That was some pro editing!
Opening the boot or the number plate.... both are actually pretty easy.
Also found one with missing HDD, camera and a broken screen. It now works perfectly
I love the Elantra, my 2011 model year has 111,111 miles on it and still going strong 😊
Why would theythrow that out ??
because they are apple users

Probably wealthy and selling an iMac for $400 isn't worth it to them. Also greedy and don't believe in donating
@@sneedsneed460 that's exactly it. I have gotten here in our recycle center a 24" iMac (aluminium model, core 2 duo) a 21.5 inch unibody core2 duo model, another 24" alloy body model, my first 2006 Mac Pro, and the 27" one I am using now identical to the one in the video. I have also purchased used my 2009 Mac Pro for mere pittance simply because it needed a video card.
Some lense cleaner combined with a DAMN cloth
I still use a 2010 i7 27” iMac and its been a bloody fantastic machine. It’s my photo editing rig. All I have done is upgrade the RAM.
A Mac like this in America is still $400
It would say trash if the laptop is completely broken. Treasure if the laptop mostly works and can be repaired.
Feels lonely to watch high quality video under 100k views
It’s a weird feeling
You found my iMac, I got it from a local school, it was used for running a Lazer cutter, the chip is actually from some bumping into it with sheet metal. I'm glad you got it running I just never got around to fixing it and gave it to my cousin. He must have chucked it
Bin = someone's office that he broke into.
I still use my iMac 27" from 2011!! It works perfectly :-)
For more bins like this in this world 😝, awesome video sir. Greetings from Brazil
You're a very lucky man! And how exciting that this gorgeous machine works. I have a 2019 27" 5K retina beast and I LOVE IT so I know exactly how you feel.
any chance a gpu will be put in? it was the last year you could do so on imacs. tho the 27" needs a heatsink mod to fit regular non apple mxm cards from other devices
yes you can change the GPU to select one but you lose boot screens with most and its painful if that is the case and you need it for any reason.
@@glennmoore5880 and you also loose brightness control but that can be controlled with other software. Also if you use an Nvidia 900 or 10 series mxm card web drivers need to be installed.
I have no life so I researched the possibilities cuz I have a 2011 21.5" i7 iMac
@@82FGDT yes and further to all of that because you have the 21.5 you have more restrictions regards size of heatsinks and power draw.
@@glennmoore5880 yep. some people even replace the power supplies with beefier 2010 ones. but the 765m seems like a good fit. Actually it just barely fits with the hard drive but will still work from what I've seen
This is what I worried about when I heard of iMac with unreplaceable hard disk. Apple need be less greedy and make the HDD replaceable!
The closest I've found to a 27" iMac in a bin is the box it came with.
Personally I kept the box of mine.
Never thought an australian would throw away something they think cannot be fixed. But kudos to you, you gave this nice imac a good home
I hope the person who ever threw this out sees this eventually 😂
I got one of these out of the bin also, it was damaged by the owner pulling the hard disk. I repaired the connectors and fixed the display, the video card was not working , I baked it @ 400 degrees for 10 minutes , put a SSD in it and did the recover option. all working and I am using it for Music production. cool video.
Hope you enjoy this weeks video 😊 Thought I'd mix things up and not have it be about a laptop.

to get the glass clean ,use oven cleaner, the stuff in a bottle u use for the inside of the oven and for the glass oven door, remove the glass when doing it as itll strip all paint
Probably the most important/versatile ports and you didn't mention them at all :-)
Give me this thing if you don't use it..
Whilst not as serendipitous as your situation, i was gifted a 2010 21.5" iMac. I installed an SSD and just used strong velcro to hold it in place instead of an adaptor, and installed a program called SSD Fan Control. Worked a treat.
I found an iMac 7,1 in the bin on its original OS.
7,1? Isn't that a Mid 2007 iMac? Also, make a backup of the OS if you can, because Mac OS X Tiger for intel is almost impossible to find.

I 'm using the same model of mac as my main computer. Totally valid today for many uses.
Dude that's my mac I want it back! I'm just kidding lol
Congratulations! You won $400

Congrats on the find. Kind of ironic that the new 2021 iMacs went back to a chassis similar to this one.
I'd love to find this computer and put Linux on it :( seems like a great balance of power and beauty! Plus, it's easy to take apart :)
And you can install the latest Linux distro on it. Pretty sure since it's a 2011 model MacOS Mojave won't run on it..
With a 3 TB drive you could partition it for a dual boot, Have the best of both worlds.

What an awesome find! And all it needed was a new HDD! Amazing!
THANKS!!!
I WANT! Lol nah have fun with it! I wish I could find something like this someday but nah I never have luck ._.

Wow so lucky today. Discovered your channel yesterday and live it.
As much as I really don't like modern day Apple, glad you gave this machine a second life.
You live in Australian Beverly Hills or what, show me who throw up an imac into trash bins!

I work for a college and it's very common to see facilities dumping this type of hardware. In fact, the university organizes "green days" where people to go the recycle bins to pick up computers. I got one i7 4 gen in there.
I found an iMac A1312 27" in a dumpster yesterday! I did a quick test - no keyboard/ mouse. Heard the start - up chime, apple loading up screen... Then two alternating symbols. Not sure what they mean, but think it might still work! Thank you 🤓 what is the latest iOS that can be installed?
