He wanted to win the duel and use the power of the rose bride to free Juri from her sadness. Saving her probably involves either having Juri fall out of love with shiori or having shiori fall in love with Juri. He loves Juri and is in a way to Juri what she is to Shiori.

@@VictorAHunter I find that difficult to do when Eva gets way more hype and attention and, to me, Utena's themes and premise seem to be much more focused and consistent.
@@johnboy9596 when watch utena i definitely felt more consistently devilering its theme and story but remember if it wasn't for Eva their probably be no utena and u can see alot of the same DNA in both works and i do agree that utena needs to get talked up there with the greats which i don't think people do
@@VictorAHunter Eva did come out first but Ikuhara and Anno were talking with one another through out Evas production, so the same could be said for Eva. Both directors are surrealists and I think they both influenced each other.
