- I couldn't find this on TH-cam, so I figured I'd upload it myself. This is one of my favorite scenes from Revolutionary Girl Utena.

her character is such an interesting manifestation of internalized homophobia .. as horrible as she is and as much as i want to hate her a part of me understands her feelings more than id like to
Shiori is actually how a guy with inferiority complex and a crush on a far-too-perfect childhood friend would act, just the lesbian version with homophobia.
You harvest feelings for your childhood friend (yeah voice of god said Shiori loved Juri as well), but you know they're too good for you, and you think they will never return your feelings. You start getting anxious and feeling miserable, because normally shallow person doesn't have enough wisdom to spare themselves, they naturally want to act cool infront of their girl, and wish their crush will be infatuated with them because "Awww you're so cool and perfect"
But when your crush is superior to you in any aspects, that causes problems. You still want to act cool , but you know you do nothing better to her, you have nothing to show off to her, and you don't believe she will ever fell in love with such an incel. You still have your self-esteem to protect, so you start throwing tantrums, because you know she's too good to someone like you, so you start questioning why she even talks to someone like me? Is she just pitying me?
You get angry at her being too perfect to get, you get angry at how she dare pitying on you, you suspecting her secretly looking down on you, you suspecting her having crushes on different guys and you couldn't stand but start messing up her relationships with all the nice guys.
You want to posses her, you want to destroy her, you want to be the one dominanting her feelings, not her being the reason you feel yourself living so miserably.
And one day you found put she's actually hopelessly crushing on you, as well. Hallelujah ! You are so twisted that you are happy only for being able to dominant her, not admitting that she could wavering your feelings. I have to be the winner here, and she must be the one miserable for unrequited feelings !
Also in Shiori's there's also homophobia. She's in denial of her having crush on Juri, so she must date a boy. She took boys (potential love rivals) away from Juri, but she's acting like she loved them. She's drown in ecstacy once she found out Juri has been in love for her, but then she had to remind herself "No no no girl loving girl is gross, I'm not homo, yeah it's not like that, everybody hears me"
This is excellent analysis. It's intriguing how deep feelings of love and hatred can be transmuted and compounded with each other.
Also part of what makes Shiori think that she beaten Juri in the miserable competition is the lesbian factor, bc i believe even though Shiori's in love with Juri, she's still in dental and not fully awhere of that(considering how she talks abt the guys she "took away" from Juri, saying she felt smt for them when we know she didn't), so finding out Juri is a lesbian makes her feel superior abt herself and compared to Juri, like "ha look at her, all this time i thought she was better than me, turns out she's a lesbo, that's way worse than me, bc i am def not a lesbo either"
Shiori just cannot believe how Juri really thinks of her.
It's very sad that Juri doesn't know how to express her true feelings of her.

@OliveGardenTroll She never really hated Juri--the episode commentary Ikuhara wrote for this episode (which can be found in the second boxset Nozomi entertainment recently released) indicates that Shiori returns Juri's feelings... but this is Shiori we're talking about. She probably treats Juri like crap despite loving her because SHE HERSELF doesn't feel like she deserves anything. Shiori's self-destructive. So at the end of the series, I'd say she's more ACCEPTED everything.

People fail to take into account that Jury's infatuation with Shiori was also unhealthy and destructive. She couldn't admit her true feelings to Shiori, and kept their relationship platonic. It made Jury emotionally distance herself from Shiori as protection. In the show we see her act very aloof and unconcerned. The increasing isolation, plus Shiori's inferiority complex, drove her increasingly desperate for any attention.
Shiori has obviously done worse to Juri and she's the more actively malicious one but like you said, Juri's infatuation with Shiori was unhealthy too. Instead of admitting that she was still angry at Shiori, she told her not to worry and that she has no hard feelings when Shiori tried to apologize when it's obvious Juri was angry and she just walked away when Ruka dumped Shiori in front of the whole school. Taking all this into account, I can see why Shiori is desperate and thinks Juri looks down on her.
Yeah, they ain't exactly OTP, and Juri is definitely in need of healthier romantic connections. Unrequited love is dumb, and holding onto it in spite of its one-sidedness is indeed immature.
I've always hated her, cruel, toxic and such a manipulative hypocrite. Was one of the most realistic characters, though...
Poor thing seems to have some sense of internalized homophobia, not only towards Juri, but herself. To see that Juri has such feelings for her, and that she may even return them herself, seems to fill her with disgust and confusion.
It has nothing to do with homophobia. The whole anime never even tapped on the subject. You need to watch Utena again since it seems you didn't even understand anything about the various symbolisms within.

i really feel for her, despite how cruel she is to juri. she is only like 15 and i always interpreted her losing it at the end as more of a question of “why do you still look at me like that when i’m such a horrible person? why did it end up like this? why couldn’t we have understood each other?”
It's sad to see how strong and great Juri can be, but yet so incredibly fragile also.

None of the characters are truly bad, except for Aiko and (sometimes) Anthy (but that comes from how Aiko tormented her). The others are all just caught in the threshold of growing up, finding themselves, and accepting they're not yet adults, but not children.
Lemon Drops I don't even think Aiko is bad. He did some pretty terrible things, yeah, but it's shown that he truly cares about Anthy (despite his abuse of her). I'd find it hard to sympathize with him if it weren't for the implication that he was just an illusion created by Anthy or whatever. Anthy is also very messed up herself, so I definitely sympathize with her.
+Joseph Lara the thing is, I don't think Akio cared about Anthy all that much. Anthy loved him and didn't want to leave him, but Akio raped and abused her for an implied hundreds of years. He manipulated her into taking the swords of hate for him.
Akio also raped Utena, Touga, and (arguably) the people who entered his car in the third arc.He cheated on his fiancée and it's implied that he killed her and her father.
Dude, Akio is pretty terrible. Idk how you didn't think he was that bad.
Anna P Don't get me wrong. He is the worst character out of everyone in this series. But the reason why I think he cares for Anthy, even if it's just a smidge, was when he told her, and I'm only paraphrasing, that it hurts him to see her in so much pain. Although that could just be him manipulating her.
+Joseph Lara idk it depends on the interpretation (there is no "right" interpretation of utena) but I personally though that was Akio manipulating her. I mean, he still used her to take the swords of hate and the whole message of the show was that Anthy was trapped and abused by the system that Akio used to gain eternity. Anthy's freedom was the revolution all along.

Shiori is a terrible, toxic and manipulative person with a twisted perspective of Juri, but I still feel sympathy for her.
She's so overcome with insecurity and hate that she wants to drag Juri down to her level, but stealing their friend away from her made her feel only worse.
She's very unhappy and regrets a lot of things, but she's not strong enough to stop herself.

Shiori's case could be considered partly internalised homophobia, but what I love about Juri/Shiori is that their storyline and relationship issues are from the beginning decidedly not based in either of them being gay. Juri is obsessed with Shiori to a point where it's unhealthy and she forcibly distances herself, denying her feelings and leading Shiori to believe she looks down on and disrespects her--for stealing the guy, in Shiori's mind, perhaps--but much more because Shiori herself believes she's someone Juri could never actually care about, because Shiori has decided she herself is too broken and useless to ever be loved. Juri never faces up to the truth of her emotions and thus is unable to move beyond them.
Shiori's problem is also this sort of obsession with Juri (who she believes is much more accomplished, talented, and inherently worthy), wherein to prove she is loveable and worthy she manipulates others (especially those who exist around Juri's orbit, like Ruka) into loving her, or at least pretending they do, because she's incapable of generating a sense of self-worth from within and so constantly seeks external validation. Her echoes of 'why do you look at me like that?' etc here don't read as 'ew, but we're both girls?' but instead as 'how can you look at *me* this way, when I am not worth anything in comparison to you?'. There's a lot of self-hatred here, and honestly Shiori acts in incredibly malicious and selfish ways at various points, and certainly internalised homophobia is an aspect the audience is meant to read into, no doubt, but I like very much how Ikuhara gives the focus in their relationship on a general case of co-dependency and mutual obsession, and truly this aspect wouldn't change even if it was a heterosexual pairing. Idk, I like how they're given the same treatment in many ways.
I actually think Utena herself and her varying views about her motivations (towards herself, the prince, Anthy) throughout the series is the much more overt exploration of burgeoning gay sexuality bumping up against societal heteronormativity in the show tbh. But even that is just one part amongst many in Anthy and Utena's story and development.
Shiori is such a horrible, vile, manipulative bitch, but still a great character nonetheless. Her and Juri's character arcs/episodes were my faves, and some of the best in the series. Her self esteem is so low that she idolizes and hates Juri for what she is. She realizes the full nature of Juris feelings for, and decides to use that small string to manipulate, and exert power over her; it's the only way she can see herself as her equal... Live this series so much.
So if I get this, Shiori is bent out of shape, because she had power over Juri, and because she finally became her equal, and basically ended up getting everything that made her like Juri. Even when you're equal with someone you love and hate it is never enough, because you are still in their shadow.
Did I get that right? Because even I did, that makes NO SENSE.

The person in one of the other reply threads has it right, I think. Shiori went with the man who she thought Juri loved to hurt Juri and feel better about herself. She only got the first part and ended up feeling worse. Here, she briefly has a moment of "Aha! I had more power then I ever thought!"... and again, ends up feeling worse. Because Juri loved her? Well who the fuck would ever love a bitch like her? Doesn't make a damn thing better in the flaming car wreck she's made her relationships.
Much more simple. She is jealous of her friend and grew hate toward her. Getting love from someone she hate, does not make the hate go away.

Renee Gamino Clearly you are more passionate about analyzing the character relationships in this show that I am, but my extremely simplistic perception of Shiori is that she is generally a bad person. I dislike her, but I do not dislike Juri, despite her flaws. I want Juri to be happy with someone who isn't as messed up as Shiori.
On another note, I am impressed with the amount of though you out into your analysis of their relationships. Bravo.

@merrynightwanderer She doesn't consider how Shiori feels and projects her own over-idealized image onto her. Basically, she's in love with what she thinks Shiori should be like instead of accepting her for who she is.
I really loved the creepy vibes that the second third of this show gave us.
I really love this scene, especially the way her feeling of validation or "winning" is suddenly followed by her freaking out. Internalized homophobia as some say is probably part of it, but I think there's more nuance to that final reaction than just that. At the same time that she feels happy for having "won" over Jury, she can't take it because it completely recontextualizes their entire friendship in her mind. She grows up thinking that Jury is mocking or looking down on her, and so much of her inferiority complex and desire to "win" over her in the first place is based on that. With the realization that Jury loves her, there might be the initial feeling of satisfaction, but that knowledge ultimately serves to completely undermine the reasons for her complex and her resentment that she's been acting on the whole time.
The moment she finally achieves the victory over Jury she's always wanted, the form it comes in is one that makes the entire game she's been playing, all her efforts and bitterness, completely pointless, and that's a big part of why she can't handle this realization. She can't reconcile the person that she's become with the truth that she was completely wrong about their relationship their entire time.
I just cannot find it in my heart to forgive Shiori. I do feel sorry that her own feelings were used against her like that though.

There's implications in the ending that they may have reached some kind of reconciliation, or even love, since we see Shiori happily participating in the fencing club.
We don't see the actual scene unfortunately but I think Shiori and Juri reconciled and managed to reach an understanding.

Even when she realize Juri has feelings for her and feels sad about what she done to herself and Juri, And I know why she done it I can't sympathize with Shiori nor do I ship her with Juri.
Even when she was pair with Ruka and when he dump her and when Juri checks up on her, she was an utra bitch to her and blame her for the break up (Its been a while since I watch the show) sure at the end she was a bit better, but she's my least favorite character in the show beside Saionji.
Shiori didn't blame Juri for Ruka dumping her. She was humiliated by Ruka using her and dumping her (it's implied that she and Ruka had just slept together, too). Shiori knew Juri hated the idea of Ruka & Shiori as a couple, so Shiori probably assumed any sympathy from Juri would be insincere. Which it really kind of was ...
