The a's and the reds didnt really want to commit to him, and he was a bit underwhelming with the yankees for a few reasons that probably turned teams off to the idea.

I’ve really enjoyed watching sonny pitch throughout this year with my dad, especially in the beginning of the year where he went like 6-1 with a 1.70 era or something like that. He just gives quality start after quality start, with reliable stuff. I’m hoping he gets the ball for our first game in the postseason and can carry us to a win. I’m also hoping that we end up keeping him on a new contract because he has been so damn good for us this year that I would hate to send him away, but idk if we’ll have the money to with how good he’s been this year, proving how much he’s worth.

Gerrit cole is the front runner for cy young by a pretty big margin, especially as a fan who values the “workhorse” while being an efficient type of pitcher with a low ERA while eating innings and punching out some of the most in the league and a low WHIP and highest WAR for pitchers. With that being said, gray is a great dude and a great pitcher and deserves 2nd in the cy young race, he’s one of those candidates. The candidate that just needs to pitch more innings and strike out some more guys to prove his true value. Great season by Sonny! Easily the most underrated pitcher with Kyle Bradish.
Gerrit Cole is not only having a great season, but his competitors have teammates who are having good enough seasons to cancel them out. For Luis Castillo, it is George Kirby and Logan Gilbert. For Sonny Gray, it's Pablo Lopez and Joe Ryan.
