It's the count. That's what matters in baseball. It's how you navigate the count. There are 12 different counts in Major League Baseball, with some highlights being the 0-2 count, 3-0 count, and 3-2 count aka full count. In this video, we'll discuss them all, but emphasize when needed. 3 ball counts and 2 strike counts are naturally more interesting than others.
Many MLB players will be used to illustrate my point, including Mookie Betts, Max Scherzer, Luis Arraez, Mike Trout, Aaron Nola, Kodai Senga, Sonny Gray, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu, Cristian Javier, Joey Votto, and Edwin Diaz.
Baseball strategy will be a big topic here as well. What do the numbers say about swinging at the first pitch? How about a 3-0 count swing? You might be surprised. All this, and much much more, will be revealed in this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production.

16:04 When you said "Jose Ramirez swings at everything", I was disappointed that you didn't add the clip of him punching Tim Anderson, 😂😂
That would have been gold
Should have been called "Only Thing That COUNTS in Baseball"
Well shoot
You must feel like a real chatch @@FoolishBaseball
But there are multiple things that count in baseball

Mike Trout's pixelated face popping up in the mirror killed me. Exactly what I needed to start my day.
Just found this cool offshoot channel of the foolish bailey channel! Thinking about subbing.

"Whether we're talking about the Magnus effect or Magnus Carlsen..."
A+. Bravo.
I was also impressed w that reference…. I had to rewind it a few seconds just to make sure I heard what I had thought.
There's also the Magnus Carlsen effect. It's when other chess players don't punish Magnus's mistakes, because they trust too much that it must a correct play if Magnus played it.
Undertale reference in a baseball vid is wild 😭😭6:27
wow this guy really explained chess perfectly
props to foolish to getting right into the video and answering the question before i even read the title!
also 2:07 what a line
I like the horsey but I also like the castle
yeah incredible
💯
This legit helped me understand the game of baseball at a deeper level. Watching the game will be more engaging when I dive into the counts. Get pumped at a 3-0 and 3-1 count. Go crazy when a hit comes on an 0-2 count
It was obvious
Dude I thought everyone had checked out the science of hitting from their local library by 10 years old

@nomorefielders @@FoolishBaseball and making it to FA to make loads of money; and one day hold that hunk of metal
This reminds me of the Corey Seager dilemma
Corey swings at quite a lot of first pitches, one of the highest in baseball.
Pitchers know this, but they also know the disadvantages of starting off 1-0 to a hitter like Seager.
What follows is a pick-your-poison and is why good first ball hitters often end up drawing a lot of walks.
Foolish Baseball sighting, instantly makes my day
The first sign of spring
13:22 THANK YOU!!!!!
Although, I would also argue that a single with a runner on 1st is still more valuable than a walk considering the 31.8% of base runners on first that took extra base(s) on a single in 2023.
The only time that the value of singles and walks is truly moot is when the bases are empty.
In situations with fewer than two outs and a runner on first, roughly 12% of PAs end in a double play. If we subtract the 35% of at bats that end in a K, BB, or HR (since you can only hit into a double play on a ball in play) that number goes up to 18%. And it turns out that the double play subtracts roughly twice as many expected runs as 1st and 3rd situations add, which is why the single and walk are roughly equal in value in that situation.
What a good video analyzing different pitch counts. There’s so much information here that I’m probably gonna have to watch it a few times. Keep crushing it Bailey!!!
Thanks!
More analytical videos like this PLEASE. This is a masterpiece.
Your videos always ignite my love for baseball again, so please send this channel to Anthony Rendon.
- Yes I'm a sad Angels fan.
Do you think this channel can make Anthony Rendon love baseball too?
@@FoolishBaseball Genuinely yes.
Day 2,350 of me asking Bailey to do a video on the 2011 Phillies pitching staff
Babe wake up a new baseball bits just dropped
babe. babe please wake up
Excellent idea for an educational video about baseball that could help a moderate baseball fan enjoy the game deeper.
Well done.
The final boss music kicking in during the part about pitchers being able to trick you was *chef's kiss* 16:37
If LeMahieu never swings 3-0 then he's probably at a disadvantage because pitchers will only throw him strikes 3-0. It's interesting how players need to balance their strenghts with predictability.
True
I’m obsessed with your writing style, Bailey. So intelligent and funny! That’s all. Just a comment about how I feel each time I watch your videos.
"Show me your count and I'll show you your future." - Obviously Boy Named Bailey
Nice one foolish. Don’t think I didn’t realize this is actually another Freddie freeman video
legitimately laughed so many times during this vid. Keep up the great work!! and so much effort on the second channel, gotta respect it
Wow one of my favorite baseball bits in a long time😂 loved this one Bailey, keep it up
This is one of the best baseball bits videos I think, extremely well done FB
I feel like I should show this video to a little league baseball team to help them understand decision making at the plate.
Awesome job! Being an old school stats nerd as myself (who has simulated or kept score of 10,000+ games), I think you are the only new modern metrics guy who makes sense of all of these otherwise unnecessary non-transparent numbers.
This is probably my favorite video you've ever done! As a coach, I'm probably going to have my kids watch this entire thing just to understand that the count matters more than they think it does
this is one of your funniest scripts yet haha. really great vid
Very fun game theory video. Also maybe the most laughs in any baseball bits. horse’s name was bacon and despite everything it’s still mike trout both really got me. Love the magnus line too
Back to back uploads from Jolly and Foolish? What a great Saturday afternoon 😅
I get so excited when I see a post from here! Love your stuff.
I respect so much that the title is answered in the first sentence and it grabbed me in such a way that I watched the rest
Thank you I am starting to fiend for baseball this is just the methadone I need
The first hit is free

As a batter and pitcher this completely makes sense and I learned a lot from this. Great video!
i think this is your best video ever. i keep coming back to it and thinking about it.
God this one was such an instant classic. Banger jokes every 2 seconds
Yay! I got my dream video of Foolish talking about counts!! Thank you so much!!
I wish so badly there was anyone making quality videos like these for Ice Hockey.
Baseball is lucky to have you, Foolish.
I'm a new baseball fan and your video really gave me good insight to understand the game more, thank you! Great vid.
What a great media piece. Thank you, FB.
I love this channel. For someone who’s a bit of a novice when it comes to the more advanced stuff in baseball, these types of videos make me learn way quicker since they’re interesting. Would I have any idea what a wOBA is if I didn’t watch this video? Absolutely not
Thanks to that other video on your main channel, I can't unsee all of the yankers in this video trying to get the count advantage.
This is probably your best video ever. Great work
Good news: you're the pitcher and you've got a 0-2 count.
Bad news: the batter is Andrew McCutchen, and there's a furry convention in town.
the two offset and and it's an even matchup imo
Bailey really stepped up with the animations and graphics in this one! Well done sir!
Always love watching these vids!
Dude Bailey is so funny legitimately, the cutaway gags got me today, I laughed out-loud at the Guinea pig joke and the undertale one lol
2:04 "a little horsie that can only L" also describes scuderia ferrari pretty well
That was a really really good video Bailey!
Your videos always show everything I love with this weird sport. Can't wait for the season to start.
The cutter is a great 'out' pitch. Because it has very little movement, and is only slightly slower than a fastball, hitters swing expecting it to be above where it actually ends up, and arriving before it actually does. You could also compare it to the slider, where it has much less drop and more velocity. It's almost like a 'neutral' pitch that surprises hitters because they are used to four seamers and sliders with movement. I think baseball novices would be able to hit the cutter much more frequently than other pitch types, but for pros it throws them off. Similar to a changeup with barely any movement.
I remember David Ortiz being one of the first guys I saw regularly have the green light to swing on 3-0, and he would rake. I realize he didn’t play entirely in pitch tracking era, but I’d be interested to see his stats. I swear I’m not just talking about the ball he hit out of the Tokyo Dome.
"Magnus effect or Magnus Carlsen" I love you Bailey this had me rolling
These videos are truly incredible.
this might be the one singular greatest video you’ve posted over all the years
Getting new foolish baseball uploads is like a hit of crack after being sober for 20 years
The reference at 6:28 filled me with determination
This might be your best work yet.
This video is so informative and yet not informative at all. Love it.
You are the goat of baseball content thank you
So many amazing lines in this video.
Really great video. Subscribed!
Awesome content as always Bailey
Always a good day when Foolish baseball uploads!
Sensational work
Another insta classic from Foolish Baseball
I think that DJ LeMahieu 3-0 part was more likely just "here are 2 times DJ LeMahieu forgot what the count was"
13:15 The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, they're the same thing; but in practice, they're not.
Super entertaining. Thanks!
That was an absolutely incredible video.
Dude, I can't LOL at work and the "in 1982, before you were born and your parents had fulfilling lives" was, well, challenging. Thanks for that!
This fucking channel. Without a doubt the best Baseball related channel on this hellsite.
Didn’t expect the undertale jumpscare but I’m here for it
thank you for acknowledging the royals as a franchise. You are the only media platform that does nowadays
Nothing matters in baseball, yet... it all does.
actually a brilliantly done video
Bailey, I'll have you know I was alive in 1988. I was 3 years old. I remember the Kirk Gibson at bat like a highlight. I'm lying about the highlight but not the being alive in 88.
Jokes aside, I dig this video. Either you're good at hitting the baseball or you're not. Pitchers that have good stuff can get just about anybody out.
Love this style of video
@2:09 Sick rising fastball. Best pitch in baseball history. I wish I had one.
Greatest video intro of all time
The chess jokes got me good.
every time you make a video its your best ever
I hate on everything but you buddy. You bring joy to my soul
This is the first Baseball Bits episode I've watched since the pandemic. You've become so... "Baseball Bits..."
Excellent research.
A new Foolish Baseball video? I guess we should COUNT our blessings
Damn, this video is super well done
0:43 I was at this game, no one knew wtf was going on
very very quality video Bailey
Seeing that Trout is #1 in the league in heart/shadow differential made me happy.
It's unreasonable how much joy I get from him still being the best at something
Great vid!
bailey just saved a ton of mlb the show players with this awesome video. We see you homie
