Vanessa Carlton said of the song: "It's about jealousy, it's about losing your virginity, it's about living on your own. It's a story that most people can relate to ... It's really the journey of one girl and her perception of her environment and how she starts out as a wide-eyed person, but everyone gets hardened by life, but not necessarily to the point where you can't feel anymore." She has also said it is about "rites of passage."

i.e. It's about that coming of age story when you're about to become or just became a legal adult. But you're not a real adult. You're still flush with emotions and insecurities and inexperience and wide-eyed, hopeful naivety. We all can relate to this somewhere between the ages of 16 and 24. That's what makes it so good. Those are some of the most fascinating years of life, and there's a bittersweet love of the nostalgia we have about feeling so full in our hearts. When 8 drinks and a good song would always find a way to make you cry like nobody is watching.

If you aren't grown up by 21 you are an idiot. People used to be thought of and lived an independent life by 18 in the past. They say we have progressed, but really the world has regressed and become perpetual adolescence.

I was 14 when I first listened to this song, I’m 31 now. Nothing but mad respect for this amazing songwriter.
Fun fact, she didn’t use any stunt double for her dance here, it’s all her because she is also an amazing ballet dancer. The huge portrait of the ballerina in this video is actually her when she was younger. She attended American Ballet Theater before making it big.

      It's almost certainly "or something."
Love, or something. Like we're young and trying to figure out our feelings. Is she in love, is she familiar with the distinction between love and lust, or is she just drunk, or caving to peer pressure?
The line implied that she thought she was in love, realized she probably wasn't, but didn't really care and wanted to be with that boy anyway, without knowing if she'd regret it later, because we don't really think like that as teens.

31 here. Can’t help but feel like it will only continue to get us harder the older we get. It’s just jammed full of that sort of nostalgia that pulls on your soul from the most formative years/parts of most of our lives…
That brink from youth to adulthood-but you’re not really close to being grown or an adult at all.
Having so much fun, making many friends, making mistakes, parties, laughter, first sexual encounters… We almost all have our own “White houses”… these places that take us back to that time and the specific memories.
I think at this point I’m the part that gets me the most is the part about moving on quickly from the friendships we form and fun we have in those years… it definitely seems to be that she’s saying she’s the type that is more sentimental and probably reminisces more. That’s very much me, and I often wonder how often, if at all, some people I spent a lot of good times with ten years ago think of me and our memories.
Good thing is, with social media I actually feel like that whole thing is definitely better than how it was pre-social media. I might not be BFFLs with some of those people, or even close anymore, but we see each other’s presence online enough for a little smiley emoji here or like or comment and it’s nice to know with that, as insignificant as it can feel (and often considered “trivial”), those are little ways to keep alive those memories and friendships in some small way.
And at the same time social media for sure has made it where some of my closest friends and I from high school literally still have an ongoing group chat on snap. We might not all always reply and some of us send things much more than others, but we ALL view everything and are there when it counts. Despite ALL the downsides of social media and the way the internet is in 2022, I feel so fortunate to have these things rather than to not.

White Houses, Paradise, and Fools Like Me. I never forgot her songs since the day she hit radio. This one, in particular, means so much to me and it's even more brilliant with this video. Like, that ballet dancer was who I used to be; they brought great memories and significant trauma. Yes, they get to live with me but they won't ever get to play my piano, more so, lay their hands on me. Watching from a distance is more than enough.

We all didn't get married in our early 20's... Sometimes the emotions and heartbreaks continued through our younger years. In the early 2000's, this song was released, and I had just finished college while working at a restaurant. My beautiful girlfriend who I met there was living with me. I don't know where I'm going with this, but this song really breaks my heart. It was on the playlist at that place we worked at... And its message and melody still kills me. I've moved on since and have a wonderful life now with a wonderful wife. But how funny is it the way that emotions impact you when you're of the ages of 13-26? You're so driven by it. It drives you and nearly kills you when you're younger, then you miss that sentiment when you're older. It's difficult. Our hearts are so swollen when we're youthful, and sometimes we hate them for it. But then we miss it when we're older. We even cry for it. How do we enjoy life without that youthful love of empathy and pathos? I want to move on, but the person I'll always love isn't even a different person. It's just me, as I felt when I was younger. Now, in my 30's, I know that nothing will ever compare to that first kiss or first time having sex. That touch. That emotion. That rush was so real.

    Lyrics
Crashed on the floor when I moved in
This little bungalow alone with some strange new friends
Stay up too late, and I'm too thin
We promise each other it's til the end
    Now we're spinning empty bottles
    It's the five of us
With pretty eyed boys girls die to trust
    I can't resist the day
No, I can't resist the day
Jenny screams out and it's no pose
Cause when she dances she goes and goes
And beer through the nose on an inside joke
    And I'm so excited, I haven't spoken
And she's so pretty, and she's so sure
Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her
    The summer's all in bloom
    The summer is ending soon
It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone
But I hold on to your secrets in white houses
Maybe I'm a little bit over my head
I come undone at the things he said
And he's so funny in his bright red shirt
We were all in love and we all got hurt
I sneak into his car's cracked leather seat
The smell of gasoline in the summer heat
Boy, we're going way too fast
It's all too sweet to last
    It's alright
And I put myself in his hands
But I hold on to your secrets in white houses
Love, or something ignites in my veins
And I pray it never fades in white houses
My first time, hard to explain
Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain
On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think
    He's my first mistake
Maybe you were all faster than me
We gave each other up so easily
These silly little wounds will never mend
I feel so far from where I've been
So I go, and I will not be back here again
I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses
I lie, put my injuries all in the dust
In my heart is the five of us
    In white houses
And you, maybe you'll remember me
What I gave is yours to keep
    In white houses
    In white houses
    In white houses

"these silly little wounds would never mend" hits home the hardest. As a woman, because we believe the notion society taught us that we have to compete with each other, we lost our friendships (as a young woman) for trivial things and that's why "pick me girls" are so rampant amongst young women.
If I can go back to my 16 - 25 y.o self, I would tell her to not stress over the silly things and to keep most of my friendships with other girls cuz as a woman in my 30s now, I realise how fucking priceless the female friends I have. They are my rock, they are my happy place, they are my shoulder to cry on. I also realise, in my 30s, we are all different but rather than competing in trying to prove who is better, we could all just support and be there for each other.
to the female friends I have lost in my younger days, I wanted you girls to know, its a regret on my part. I could have been a better friend.

This song was inpired by Vanessa´s own experience. When she was 14 she moved to New York to become a ballet dancer. There she met knew people and she experienced the presure that dancers are exposed to. After the experience she decided to go back to the piano and leave ballet behind (And I will not be back here again) I can see in the video the first Vanessa, the innocent girl on the piano, and then the other girl, the one she is afraid of, the girl that feels anger, emotion, jealousy about a girl called Jenny, probably the best dancer on the academy (cause when she dances she goes and goes). In the dance on the video you can get the message about the feelings during these experiences, the feeling that you´re going forward when you´re really going back, the ilussion of become someone else and finally the fear of being someone you swore you would never be.
