My brother met his wife on the set of this music video, they were both extras and were paired randomly by a production assistant. Crazy world.

I saw a comment on here that said “I miss the 90’s”. The irony is that this is from 2002. And hence proves my theory that the 90’s didn’t end until 2007.

    Just a day
    Just an ordinary day
    Just trying to get by
    Just a boy
    Just an ordinary boy
But he was looking to the sky
And as he asked if I would come along
    I started to realize
    That everyday he finds
    Just what he's looking for
Like a shooting star he shines
    He said take my hand
    Live while you can
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
And as he spoke, he spoke ordinary words
    Although they did not feel
For I felt what I had not felt before
And you'd swear those words could heal
And as I looked up into those eyes
    His vision borrows mine
And I know he's no stranger
For I feel I've held him for all of time
And he said take my hand
    Live while you can
Don't you see your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
In the palm of your hand
    Please come with me
    See what I see
Touch the stars for time will not flee
    Time will not flee
    Can you see?
Just a dream, just an ordinary dream
    As I wake in bed
And the boy, that ordinary boy
Or was it all in my head?
Did he ask if I would come along
    It all seemed so real
But as I looked to the door
I saw that boy standing there with a deal
And he said take my hand
    Live while you can
Don't you see all your dreams lie right in the palm of your hand
In the palm of your hand
In the palm of your hand
Just a day, just an ordinary day
    Just trying to get by
    Just a boy
    Just an ordinary boy
But he was looking to the sky

Her vocal range completely blows my mind, especially when she can bring that tone of voice like at 3:14. I can hit that sort of deep, all encompassing note, but it sounds bad and it’s so difficult for it to sound normal, and she can not only make it sound good, but work it so well into the song. She’s such a talented songwriter, singer, and pianist

There was something so enchanting about the atmosphere back then. It’s like people were more intentional to take time to be in the moment! People are probably going to say “wish I could go back” but instead let’s cultivate that atmosphere again that would be pretty dope!

Rebecca Sarrazin no friends? Gee I’m so sorry…. What you say holds truth, but better times are ahead I do believe! I would say that the most beautifully moving and unifying time to live in America was after WWII, the 70s and the 90s up to the early 2000s for many reasons… but in my opinion the most enchanting time to live is when Christ came and yet he’s coming back! On earth we see beauty through brokenness. It’s because of hard times that we realize we need something more and better and bigger than ourselves. Anyways I don’t wanna patronize or sound too much like a geek so imma dip out. Believe what you will and to each there own… but please keep an open mind and a steady heart and also do not lose hope! 🤘🏾🤠

To this day I still cannot listen to this song or watch this video without breaking down in tears. I was in college at a party school when it came out. I wanted nothing more than to finally find a girl who would love me or even like me for the first time. I fell for 2 different women freshman year who both only wanted to be friends. I pursued many other women at all different parties and places and always felt them kind of pulling away or cringing whenever I flirted. Whenever I didn't flirt, they were always too happy to treat me politely and platonically. The guys who were getting dates and getting laid continually told me I was being too nice, too respectful and not enough of an asshole and that I cared too much. But I realize now that the reason this song affects me so much is that the video was like a microcosm of my whole college experience. I was on that hillside alone with those couples all laying together for 4 years while Vanessa spun this beautiful yarn of a romantic tale celebrating life and love in this full brilliant richness and I had to just take it with no escape while no one would lay with me. I felt like the only one on the hill going through this exact issue.
Since college I've moved on, I've experienced love in brief, fractured, fleeting forms but at least I broke the spell so to speak. I am grateful for that. But this song takes me to an incredibly heartbroken place from my past in spite of how beautiful and life affirming an experience it is to look at. It sort of permanently immortalizes that pain and tucks it away in a file cabinet. If I pull it out now and listen again, I find that all that pain from 2001-05 is still remarkably well-preserved.
For those who are going to come at me with incel comments, I never wished harm upon anyone who ever rejected me. I hope that those who do have that issue find help before they seriously harm anyone else or themselves. I wish I could personally talk them all out of such things myself because I feel like I've been where a lot of them have been. I just badly wanted to feel loved or at least wanted at a time where everyone around me seemed to be finding it. And Vanessa Carlton who I respect immensely, was NOT helping the situation with this song! But I suppose, if it makes you feel something that strong either way, that's how you know it's art.

I came here just to hit the like button on all her songs again. She got me through some hard times in decades past. Thank you forever Vanessa.

Heard this song after ages.. I almost forgot about this song apart from the piano line on thousand miles that was a meme thing a little while back.. I believe this was the second single from that album.. I was just a teenager back then and now I am a mid 30z guy counting ordinary days..

pray that music goes this direction again. Melodies. Chords. Real musicians on real instruments. It was so nice.
