It's a beautiful Spring day, so what better than to sit in the Beer Garden with a pint and a Ploughman's Lunch ? But is it the perfect Ploughman's ?

Evening folks! Just walked through the door having been in Cornwall for a couple of days filming some more content for you - that’ll be next weeks videos for you 🙂
Let me know if you managed to guess my 3 chosen options for the ploughman’s lunch!
@@GreenoEatsI wasn’t far off Greeno!
What a lovely pub and the garden is beautiful ❤ The platter looked good, always great to have a good selection on your plate, isnt it!? 😊
@@GreenoEatsI wasvery sure with the sausage 😊
@@jessicanippes1730 definitely a nice place to sit and have lunch on a sunny day 🙂 How's your holiday going? You found the sunshine yet?
I absolutely adore a massively strong cheddar cheese and sweet apple crusty bread sandwich , especially for breakfast . Also cheese and apple together in a pie MMMMMM
Strong cheddar and fruit is a match made in heaven isn't it - be it apple, grapes, peach. Never considered apple and cheese in a pie though. Is that a mostly savoury or mostly sweet pie ?
@@GreenoEats It's excellent with creamy mashed potatoes and baked beans they work lovely together just like in a sandwich
Never had a sausage with a ploughmans, although something missing which is a pork pie is something I associate with one
I wouldn’t normally have ordered sausage, but as it was there I just wanted to see if it was a quality one, which sadly it wasn’t really. Bit of pork pie would have been nice certainly!
Hi Greeno, I found you through Gary eats, he's an amazing food reviewer, you seem to have the same qualities as he does, iv spent my free time watching your vids, I just love them. Respect to u Greeno 💚🇮🇪
Ah you are most kind, any comparison to Gary is welcome indeed!
Same here!
@@GreenoEatsCheers 🍺
That looks absolutely scrumptious!! And for 20 odd quid including a pint, not expensive at all. Loved it!! Cheers Greeno and thanks a lot for the perfect review.
Thanks - for me I think there were definitely things that culd and should have been better about the meal, but look out for another ploughmans video coming up on the channel this week...
This looks like they just threw a few bits on a board and called it a ploughman’s
Can’t disagree with that assessment, although in the main it tasted ok
This is probably about right really
Deep fried sasuge 🤣
Left over sausage from breakfast 😊
The fact it's on some thick plywood makes it a little pretentious...just serve things on plates or dishes
We had the most delicious ploughman's at Cheddar Gorge in a little cafe called The Mousetrap. Obviously it was Cheddar
Couldn't be anything else could it ;-)
Blue Stilton, hot sausage and chicken liver pate, Is what I'd go for!
Solid choice that!
That comment has made me feel very hungry! 😀
Definitely need crusty bread and homemade coleslaw on a ploughman's, plenty of onion and salad as well. Fair score .x
Yeah, a baguette and silverskin onions should almost lead to a revolt right!
I’d happily pay £16 for a decent ploughman’s with some quality ingredients, but that all looked like a processed platter that you could rustle up at home in 10 minutes. Nothing wrong with it as such but definitely need to raise their game with the quality. Enjoyed the review nethertheless
100% agree - it was pleasant enough, but not £16 pleasant !
Excellent, honest, unreserved review Greeno. It must be awful for you having to take one for the team like that. 😊
To be fair, it was a lovely day, in a nice location. Just wish they’d out a bit mire thought and effort into sourcing ingredients is all 🙂
Over £20 is very pricey for what you got too.... I'd say that was worth a maximum of £15, including the pint. Totally agree with you about using local suppliers too.
Tim's lived up North long enough to fall into the "tight" mentality ha ha :-)
@@GreenoEats Frugal.....
Only this afternoon in the pub someone mentioned the ship inn and said it was good. What a coincidence to see this. Haven't been there since 2008
It’s a nice pub, clearly had some investment in recent times, and does have a good reputation. I will try it some other time to see how a dish that involves real cooking is!
Mature cheddar and home-cooked ham for me. Old skool!
Can’t argue with that Tim, very solid option!
What a lovely day. I would say expensive for what you get, and no real crusty bread and not much local ingredients used, I think a 6 1/2 was a bit generous, maybe a 6. Thank you for bringing us with you and look forward to the next video.
They got extra points for the lovely beer garden, nice pint and the sun shining ☀️
@@GreenoEats yeah, I get it, I think you're right, gets extra for that 😁
An excellent review which is more than fair for what was a really below average meal - I'll give it 5
Kind of you to day so - I guess I gave extra points for the nice garden and the sunshine :-)
I see that the Rose Mullion Tearoom has gone 😔 I used to love going there as a treat when I was a kid.
Yep, a holiday letting business runs out of the old Rose Mullion site, sad times!
very interesting introduction into the Ploughman world. No disrespect to the Restaurant but I prefer a lovely Baguette with apples, honey, HAM, goats cheese with Olive Oil. Thanks Google.
What you suggest sounds like a nice combination. Not a ploughman’s though is it 😉
I would have chosen the ham, cheddar and hot sausage too! Saying that, sausage is an odd option for a ploughman's 🙃
That’s why I chose it, I was just intrigued as to what the hot sausage would be and how it would work on the ploughman’s. Sadly it was a bit of a disappointment on both fronts.
When I visited the UK I had a lot of ploughman's. The one thing seem to be missing on your plate was a pork pie. Yours looked a bit different but I glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, pork pie would have elevated this certainly!
I gave it a 5. There's a well meaning cook in that kitchen instead of a trained chef able to cope with the menu.
PS perhaps less pointing things at the camera, they're rarely in focus, just a suggestion. 😘
Thanks for the feedback Vicky - it's a little hard to see when filming what the camera focus is picking up on, as the screen is about 2 inches max ha ha - it's something I do have to be a little more conscious of though!
Hello Greeno like many others I found you on Gary eats, like him you provide an entertaining and watchable channel. Best of luck to you.😃
Welcome to the channel, and thanks for the kind words 😀
Wonderful Review of a Ploughman’s 🍱💯🙌👏🏻👏🏻
Only had a few out.but I’ve never seen a hot cooked sausage on offer…I find that a bit strange personally but I’d eat it. I’ve had the pate and also a pork pie. Ham looked legit- I’d have liked a bit more of it. You are right- why not use locally made products. The price isn’t quite reflected with what you have but again,I’m not going to be overly critical about it. Ham and Stilton for my choice, definitely not too sure off hand what else. Score was fair- it was disappointing, still good.couldve been better. Nice review. Different food.
Thanks so much for you kind comment, and yep, they could have really elevated this with a few tweaks couldn’t they.
Very nice mate, I guessed exactly what you would pick, I would have had the same. Like you, I also would have been disappointed with the sausage, they must have a proper butcher's one. A very fair assessment, thanks for your efforts
Great minds think alike huh 😀 It's a shame certain elements were a letdown, butI'm going to try some other places around Dorset and see what kind of ploughmans I can find!
Hot sausage, goat's cheese and blue stilton is the correct answer for me! 🤤
Not a fan of goats cheese personally, but otherwise a solid option!
Hiya Greeno, thin ice❄️😱What is " A Ploughman's Lunch 🤔? " For me : fresh crusty bread & butter. Good mature local cheese. In house cooked ham, pork pie. Apples, celery, pickles (onions, Branston) tomatoes. But County to County, village to village all have their own mixture of ingredients. Would have looked better on a platter rather than a chopping board (I remember plates 👌👍) As for the effort served by the Ship Inn, was more a Ship Out🛳️🚢 It looked bit slap dash. And I know it was ordered by you, but never, never put a sausage on a Ploughman's 😱And so to the till, a tadge over the top. But a tourists attraction. Cheers Allan&Family
I was just curious about the sausage, so had to order one. Was hoping it would be a nice succulent butchers sausage, but sadly not. The Ploughman's you describe sounds delicious - I'll be round yours for lunch tomorrow ok :-)
@@GreenoEats Have to be Monday 👍Sunday Lunch time Roast Chicken & all the trimmings ☺️☺️☺️☺️
@@AllanNeaves-qn3zr I hope you and the family will enjoy that, can't beat a good Sunday roast!
Looks like 8 of 10 and hope that you enjoy. I agree a wee bit too expensive.
Yeah, over priced for me, it’s assembling not cooking!
@@GreenoEats I agree. and over priced assembly.

Great upload as Always Greeno
Thanks David, hope you have a good weekend!
Great review. A smorgasbord review would be great.
But won’t I have to go all the way to Sweden for that? 😂
Top video as always Greeno! I do agree with using local suppliers and more quality ingredients especially considering the price. Businesses in these times are all about margin…. Looking forward to the next one mate …..Smithy
Yeah, I appreciate the margin pressures, but surely you should expect more for £16 - it was basically a deconstructed baguette with an apple and a cheap sausage!
@@GreenoEats agreed Greeno… like my comment you expect better my friend
@@theabandonedhunter3604 haha - every comment is a delight my friend!
Not sure if you can help. I used to visit Weymouth as a child . We went for Ploughman's in Weymouth, I can't remember .name of restaurant Also went to pub on Harbour with beer garden , had candy floss . Visiting next week. It was 1980s . Enjoying your channel 👍
Oh, I don’t know about that, Weymouth has soooo many pubs and restaurants, and so many have changed over the years. There are some really good food options around though, especially around the harbour area, so I am sure you won’t be disappointed on your trip!
@@GreenoEats Thankyou, childhood happy memories came back . Keep up great work xx
@@Carmel303 glad you enjoyed the trip to Dorset, it’s fabulous, I am so lucky to live here 🙂
Nice review. Some profit there .. slithers of ham
Thanks - yeah I think the pub certainly more than covered their costs here ha ha!
Cor blimey that apple a-peels!
Pipped me to an apple pun there!
@@GreenoEats I apple-laud you on your pun!
Ploughmans and a pint in a beer garden, heaven
Few things out there finer... as long as the Ploughmans and pint are decent anyway!
Wow there isn't enough salad there and I agree about the bread pickle is ok and what's that sausage all about lol 🤣 no crisps ..
The salad was very much an afterthought wasn't it, needed at least twice as much. The baguette and sausage were a real letdown.
@@GreenoEats I've never seen a sausage on a plough man's before lol ithink a nice crusty roll more salad crisps and pickle and a maybe some stilton as well the rolls could be slightly warm and real butter should come with it.
Baguettes on a ploughman lunch?
Nooo.
I guessed ham goats cheese and pate.
As Meatloaf once said "two out of three ain't bad"... don't know his opinion one one out of three ha ha :-)
Hi,
New sub here from Gary's channel!
Do yourself a huge favour and pop over to the I.o W for a weekend and go to Calbourne Mill. Their Millers Ploughman's is absolutely amazing and tremendous value. Not only is their bread made on site, so is their flour! The last time we went, there was so much bread on each meal, we took home two full loaves (from a party of 8) and used it for toast for a few days! A mix of wholemeal and white! And the portions of everything were just as generous!
An interesting take on a ploughman's, especially given the origins! My great grandfather held that occupation (in Devon, though he was born on the Dorset border) during WW2 and his drink was a bottle of cold tea! Cider would've been another option, but it would've been the rough, scrumpy 100% proof rocket fuel, and his plough-lines would have suffered! He'd have a hunk of bread, an apple, a lump of farm-made cheese and often raw onion. Plain, simple, but sustaining!
Loving your channel, keep up the great content!
We share the same surname, but aren't related! Say hi to the Green-ager, Mrs Greeno and the little 'un! Much love from New Zealand. xx
Ooh, I have been to the IoW in years! That Calbourne Mill sounds right up my street though.
Nice to meet a fellow Green, welcome to the channel… I am glad you enjoyed the collaboration with Gary enough to venture into my little corner of TH-cam 🙂
Welcome to the channel Liz! 😊
you said we can pick were are the mushrooms. hehehehe
Can we find a Ploughman and ask him if thats what he eats. My bet is I don't thinks so.
it does seem a lot since you could just buy all the items in full amounts for less
I would prefer a scotch egg. 2 for £1.10 in Aldi.. why not go home now and put it together and show how much it really is worth
I am planning to try a couple more pubs around Dorset for ploughmans, and then making my own for comparison - but using local "farm-shop" type ingredients. Won't be cheap, but should have much better quality !
I'd say that Ploughman's is about a 6.5 out of 10. The poor bread option massively lets it down.
No excuse when (what was) Williams the Bakers is literally around the corner!
Excuse me it's plough person's lunch if you don't mind LOL😂😂
Ha ha 😀
Hi, there's another place in wool id recommend called the Hidden deli, good fresh food!
Oh yeah, I know of that place, it’s in that little row of shops with the Chinese takeaway and the hardware shop right? What kind of things have you tried from there?
@@GreenoEats have tried all sorts, a lot of great food from there, freshly made too
@@SGCRPG I will have to swing by sometime and give it a try 🙂
I would never have guessed your 3 items. Personally, I would have had the lot, but some say I am greedy 😝
It looked really nice but that is only a quarter of the story; the other 3 quarters being smell, texture and flavour. Your pickled onion comments are so true. On a slight tangent, there is one chippy near me who seem to think it right to pickle eggs in malt brown vinegar, so it looks like it still has its shell on. I will not name and shame but suffice to say, I do not go there.
Being devil's advocate comparing price to what you got, it does seem like they trying to keep their profit margins unfairly wide. They definitely do need to invest in better quality bread as well as using proper pickled onions and making their own coleslaw and pickle, instead of buying it all cheap from a supermarket or a wholesaler.
Pickled egg in malt vinegar? What kind of madness is that !! Must look like one of those Chinese tea stained eggs you can get.
@@GreenoEats So true! 🤣
Spent ten minutes pondering what ‘Choose from’ bits I’d order. Concluded that I need to see the mixed leaf salad before committing.
You almost needed a microscope to see the salad on this platter !
@@GreenoEats Okay. I was imagining something with lots of bitter red leave which would have swayed my decision from Cheddar to Brie.
Looked ok,
But I Think you did it better in your earlier uploads Matey,
Oh, proving you are one of the OGs there David - not many remember videos from that far back !
Hi Greeno, subbed from Gary Eats. I love your style, but a ploughman’s without a pork pie! And local produce😢
Welcome to my channel! Thanks for the kind words, and yeah, the ploughman’s while not unpleasant certainly could have benefited from more locally sourced ingredients couldn’t it!
I do like a good ploughman's myself but 15 quid 😬 a bit steep there Greeno mate.
I'm happy to pay the price if I think I have received the quality to match that price. In this case i did't sadly !
Produce on this looks like cash and carry not quality. How hard can it be to source some fresh crusty rolls or baguettes from a bakery, local farm ham and cheese? Homemade chutney, enough butter and cut up some salad and tomatoes. Pubs would do a lot better with smaller menus but excelling in what they do. Mum's cafe near Christchurch are meant to do a very good full English with bubble if you are in that area at all. Thanks for the vids - I definitely won't be stopping there 😅 But the spudman you reviewed looked very good 👍
I don’t often venture Christchurch way, but I have had a few recommendations of places there and beyond so I will have to make the effort. Agree 💯 with your thoughts on sourcing the product for the ploughman’s. As for the Smokey Mose spud van, it’s well worth the try. Really excellent. The little food market in the Square in Bournemouth is proving to have some excellent vendors 🙂
I think surroundings, where your situated in the country is all attributed to the price. Personally you start adding artisan bread (buying) (artisan sausages buying) your bumping that price right up. I think maybe just because you can "afford" to eat out, doesn't necessarily mean the pub/ restaurant can afford the absolute best of ingredients all the time.
Then if they did, would you pay £20+ for a ploughman's or would you low score it for it's in affordability?
Then if they start to make these things in-house there goes your labour budget...so again the price of the food has to go up .... A pub/ restaurant is always a balance.
Just saying 🤣
Hi Natalie, I have run a pub before, as did my Mum for upwards of 30 years. So I know that the price of whatever you are putting in must have an impact on the price of what is going out. A rough rule of thumb might be that the sales price is something in the order of 3x the ingredient cost. I can't see that the ingredients I get there come in at more than a fiver surely?
Cheddar's the right cheese for a Ploughman's but not pickled eggs , hard boiled as you already have the pickle.
Crusty cob rather than the baguette and where was the pork pie ?
Don't get me wrong as this was not too bad apart from the price but you have to take into account where you are fella......very fair giving it a relatively low score all things considered.
Loving the sudden peak in the subs fella 👍
Yeah, the channel is going great guns at the moment - really chuffed with it!
I am a huge fan of pickled eggs, but it did seem a touch out of place to be honest.
100% agree about the missing pork pie !
Change the P to a T I’d say Greeno 😂
What's a Terfect Tloughman ?😂
If you haven't tried it before get some Branston's Caramelised onion Chutney perfect for A Ploughman's.I have got that Cutlery nick us A few if you go there Again LOL
I'll be sure to take a rucksack next time I go - reckon I can get half a dozen cutlery sets in there ha ha!
The place would do better not putting strange stuff like sausage on it, but focus on better bread, cheese and ham. If the ingredients are good, it will be a winner with lesz pn the plate, but chucking random things on it to disguise poor basic ingredients is never a good idea. Fair review Greeno.
Agreed, and thanks for the kind words!
yea i'm surprised they didn't use sour dough or a crusty loaf and give you more butter,The sausage with them using a butcher you think it would have been a proper butcher sausage . but looks not bad would say probably should be a few quid cheaper
Yeah, If it had been £10 or £11 I would have said "you get what you pay for" - but I think this was a relatively premium price for a ploughmans which wasn't really matched by the less than premium ingredients
@@GreenoEats yea and that pre baked bread is never as good as a proper bakery
@@MrKEVINCAMPBELL yep - that part is pretty much inexcusable right?
@@GreenoEats yea for me yea along with the sausage is a deal breaker
I would say that looks a very generous portion for Ploughmen's Lunch. Never seen Pickled Egg in this dish, And I would say it was well priced. I would have gone for Cheddar, Stilton and Ham. Really good to see you try the First Ferret, a lovely beer.
Most Ploughmen's only offer one type of cheese/meat so £12,50 for that I feel is really good value, especially as you got a great chunk of bread.. I would given it a seven and half.
Great looking place, especially with the sun shining. Thanks Deano.
Not sure Deano would be happy with you calling me that, he’s about 10 years younger than me ha ha! The pint was indeed tasty and well kept. I think your selection of cheddar, stilton and ham is a solid one 🙂
@@GreenoEats one of my messages to Deano auto corrected to Greeno once! 😂
@@theabandonedhunter3604 ha ha, the perils of following two channels with similar named hosts !
(98) Surprisingly mediocre. When I felt like a Ploughman's Lunch (a bit of a rarity in a Kiwi restaurant) I would avoid the meat selections and cheese my arse off. I also preferred wine with it as well. And each restaurant did their own pickles and bread in house.
Home made pickles are the best aren't they! In fairness, having a selection of cheese can be a great choice.
I agree with you, looks like it all came from Bookers or Bidfoods, frozen bread, pickle/coleslaw in a 1KG jar, cheese in massive blocks etc. Shame as for that price you'd expect more - Avoid!
I was surprised as this place has a decent food reputation - I will have to try it for something that involves a little more culinary skill
£20 !!!!!!
Yep, bit strong wasn't it !

Ha ha, good point!
I am in trouble today i had a ploughmans lunch he is not happy with me!
Did he have a furrowed brow?
@@GreenoEats Eyes don't know if he had a furrowed brow!
would be considered a rip off up north -most of the ingredients looked and sounded poor
I think I would have been happy enough with the price if I was getting quality local ingredients, but as I didn't then I think it was all the money and more!
Personally I would feel disappointed with that as a Ploughman's Lunch - very bland IMO. I most definitely think it's too expensive but I have no idea about the costs for businesses where this is and they need to make a profit.
I completely understand about the nee to make money - no issue with that. But with something like a ploughman's there's no place to hide - all the ingredients served as they come in basically!
Sorry, sausage does not belong on a ploughman's lunch. Must have got a job lot.
Also, I don't think there's any rule the says a pub named Ship has to be near the sea - there's one in central London.......
I was just intrigued about the sausage, assumed it must be something good if they were putting it on the menu. I was wrong. As for the pub being called the Ship, I get what you're saying but this one is only maybe 5 miles from the sea. So you'd think the ones actually near the sea would be called that!!
Catering sausage on a ploughman's god help us
Yep - that's all kids of wrong isn't it. Especially if yu are already using the butchers not half a mile away for other produce!
When I think of a ploughman’s I think of the words of my old chap back in the late 70s, “if anywhere charges more than a pound for a ploughman’s then walk away”
Having said that let me say this, your ploughman’s looked pretty bland, I’d be a bit disappointed with the sausage especially
That would have been a proper ploughmans back in the day too wouldn't it :-)
Seems like a rip off
Was certainly all the money and then some right!
16 quid for that?! And the Brits cry about inflation?!
Ploughman's lunch is nothing more than bread, cheese and that relish. No different from any other sandwiched lunch really!
Well it should be a bit more than a sandwich - but I do take the point :-)
It was OK but pretty average. Sausage on a ploughman's is just weird though.
I only picked the sausage as it was a bit of a curveball, and I wanted to see whether I would get a quality sausage or not... what a pity it wasn't the best!
Looks a bit average ,so so ingredients on a board really and not great value which is a shame and over £20 is very pricey.
The £20 did include a pint, but still I think for the kind of ingredients used it was overpriced. Thanks for watching!!
@@GreenoEats oh yes of course and that is average for a pint but just over £15 is a bit steep indeed for an average ploughman's and silverskin onions oh my !!
Looks great but the proof is in the tasting - disappointing and all looks mass produced bought from a Supermarket/wholesalers.
Yeah, looks really nice on the thumbnail doesn't it ha ha. A shame they haven't put a little more thought and effort into the sourcing of the ingredients.
I'm a chef, and the fact you paid extra for the cheese. Really expensive and revolting. Should be a selection of cheese and perhaps ham homemade coleslaw pink onions pickled on site. Definitely not egg. Yuck😮
Agreed with much of what you say there - definitely room for improvement at this place wasn't there !!
That is a ridiculous price, crap bread, shop bought coleslaw seems like they can’t be bothered tbh.
And what is that sausage doing on that board
I was surprised as the place has a decent reputation for food - later in the year I will give them another try for something with a little more cooking involved, see how that compares.
I was just curious about it, so wanted to find out if it was a good butchers sausage or not. Sadly it wasn't.
The bread looked awful, and probably tasteless, like eating air🇨🇦
For me a Ploughman's lunch is something that should have a connection to something that might have been eaten 100, maybe 200 years ago. A part baked baguette does not fit that brief :-)
the bread does not look too tasty and inviting
Just a part baked baguette like you can pick up in any supermarket, very disappointing!
@@GreenoEats the menu says "crusty bread' dough ;-)
Looks a rip off to me ...
I wold happily have paid that IF the ingredients were more local (and it had proper bread and a proper pickled onion!)
That's not worth a tenner
I plan to demonstrate that at another place I know of later in the summer..
Is the cheap Sausage supposed to make up for a decent pork pie 🤮
Well it certainly didn't :-)
Looks like an easy way to make profit. Not much work involved and not much in the way of quality product.
Bread as you mentioned and a disappointing sausage. A lump of bitey cheddar and some catering butter (instead of a nice piece of quality butter in a bowl). Looks like an overpriced low effort offering.
Which surprise's me given its a small Dorset pub, looks more like a pub chain attempt.
Yeah, although it was tasty enough you are right, it did feel like a plate you would get in a chain. A pity really.
Nothing made in house that ham is never cooked their. You said it cheap bread. You dragged this out boring 😴.Packet, Jar food £15.75🤣🤣
Maybe the ham is at least sliced there? ha ha !

Worst ploughman's I've seen.
Oh I have actually seen worse - I had one once with what I can only assume was Asda or Tesco sliced white bread !
Sorry but that looks really poor , wrong bread , should be a hard boiled egg not pickled .... ditch the sausage that should be a pork pie ..and 3 types of cheese ..one being a stilton type
to be fair, I could have chosen more cheese, but I wanted to see what some of the other options were like. I love a pickled egg, but it did seem a slightly odd item to find on a ploughmans
