Further to an earlier comment ,this is the Girls entrance to the former Hanson Girls Grammar school.
Hanson junior school is further back up Byron St.
    I know, as I went there 61/65

Remember playing football for Manningham middle school against Hanson around 1971 on the pitch next to the school (Myra shay), it was probably the most coldest match I ever played in, I was absolutely frozen “happy days” 😂😂

That building was the former Pollard Middle School. I went to the one further up this same rd , Lapage Middle School back in the early 90s #memories #nostalgic

surely this is the secondary school - Hanson Junior school was behind it on Byron Street I think. We used to cut through and up steep stone stairs to get to the Junior School in the 1960's

How wonderful your following my childhood home locations ….. firstly The Ghost of Thornton Viaduct. I was born virtually under the Viaduct. At three months old my family relocated to Barkerend Road. Barlow Street to be precise. Just a few streets away from where you were standing at the location of this next tragedy where poor Mary sadly lost her life at Hanson. Whilst you were walking along Gilpin Street your walked past the top of Webster Street which is next to Barlow Street on Barkerend Road where I spent virtually my whole childhood. Webster Street had its own tragedy. In the 1970s or early 1980s the police came knocking on our door. They were trying to gather information about an old lady who lived on Webster Street who had sadly been found in pieces and located pushed up into the chimney cavity in the cellar of her home. It eventually transpired she had befriended a young boy who used to pop round to her home visiting for tea, cakes and sandwiches. She felt sorry for the young boy apparently. It was he who had been considered the perpetrator of her demise. My parents purchased the Telegraph & Argus on a Monday through to Saturday every week and were shocked to realise this lady’s story had not even been reported on. With hindsight it might have been due to the age of the boy. What a coincidence you reporting yet again from a key location in my life ……. I hope its not a pattern forming until eventually you get to the last location of my life and I have suffered a tragic event which you end up reporting on … lol. It was wonderful to hear all the background information of day to day events at the time of Marys death in relation to the school. It set the scene perfectly. To see the actual photo from the article as a comparison to the building now was a very nice touch indeed and finishing on the visit to Marys resting place was the ideal ending to a very interesting story. Thank you to all involved.

Another winning upload that educates and raises awareness of further hidden aspects of our fantastic city's history. What a shocking story but you've ensured the poor girl has been remembered.
On a more worrying note - I fear for the welfare of Imtiaz! We last saw him calling Rebecca into the tunnel of Pitty Beck... 👻

Quite an interesting, but sad story. Poor girl, she wasn't the only Edwardian woman to die in this way. A lady visiting the Grand Canyon met a similar fate, in very much the same way. She was standing near the canyon's rim when a gust of wind sewpt her up and out, over the canyon before letting her go........

I love this kind of stuff, love local history. There’s a grave at the owlet road cemetery Shipley where the little boy was meant to be a Jack the Ripper victim. Heartbreaking to read the story, love to see you guys do a vid about it. Thanks for everything you guys do. Love your channel.

Sorry I don’t have Facebook but the little boy was called John ‘Johnny’ gill of Manningham. There’s a few articles on the web about it. Very interesting but awful read.

I loved watching this. My grandad was a pupil at the school and will probably be in the headmasters book. I don't know when he was a pupil there but was born 1904. He was repeatedly caned for writing with his left hand until he eventually used his right.

Hanson junior school was up Byron Street about 200 yards from the junction where the picture of the entrance to the Girls’ Grammar School was taken. There is no way Mary could have jumped from one of the upper windows - the suicide theory - as they only have top openers and the windows in the classrooms are too high for her to even climb onto the window bottom let alone access the open part. Keep up the good work with the stories from Bradford!

Absolutely, those windows had a cord and ratchet configuration to operate the top windows and a boat hook type pole to pull the windows down.

Incredible insights from the headmaster's journal. So sad that nature caused such a fatal accident to Mary, a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nonetheless another enjoyable film.
