  • Today, we take you around The Hirst Wood Burial Ground which is an extension of St Paul’s Churchyard.
The burial ground is closed to burials, but the cremated remains of Shipley residents or people with lifetime family connections with Shipley may still be interred in the Garden of Remembrance. The burial ground is accessed down a private drive on the Shipley side of H H Birch & Sons’ premises at Nab Wood Cemetery. The burial ground is left to nature and care must be taken on the pathways and steps in wet weather.
Big shout out to Kbn Adventures paranormal for pointing the grounds out!

I remember when I was 14 (2001) contacting the church begging them to do something to protect the graves. Nothing was done. Although I have recently moved back to the area and a local volunteer team have started to clear the unaccessible parts. Fingers crossed they give this graveyard the love it deserves

The protruding stones in the walls are known as 'throughs' or 'truffs', they are long stones that, as their name suggests, run right through the wall providing strength, hope this helps, I've always wondered the same, stay safe ❤

I remember vaguely reading about the vandalism here and until then I never knew this cemetery existed.
I find it sad that it has been allowed to become so overgrown 😢

It is upsetting and it has a very unusual look to it when you there in person.
I will be uploading a further video about the same burial grounds and will give you an update.
Keep a look out and thanks for watching 👀

In London, we have loads of cemeteries that used to be like that. Highgate, was one of them, it is now one of the best cemeteries in London.

My family have two graves in that cemetery that you showed on film. One had a cross which was broken off when they did the vandalism. You showed the two pieces of the cross leaning at the side of the grave. Buckinghams. A lot of the gravestones were pushed over at the same time.

I have family in there, only found out today, I plan to visit but I doubt I will find the grave after looking at this video.

The councils went around pushing over "unstable" graves a few years ago after a lad was killed in Scotland messing about in a cemetery. I live near Tong cemetery and there is a lot put over there. Unfortunately you have to own the plot to get the stone fixed, my mother was really upset to find her gt grandparents stone over, but could do nothing because she didn't have the paperwork. Interesting video again ..keep up the good work 😀

There was a volunteer group set up but when they started to clear what they could some people complained saying they were disturbing nature and there habitat. There's plenty of areas around there for that. People paid for these burials and should be looked after indefinitely, not left to collapse and over grown as it is now. It's disgraceful 😔

I know of 2 very small grave yards in Shipley that have always puzzled me. Why They were put in the spots they are. They must be only 10 stones in each plot.
Havnt been since I was a kid.
Be nice to find out abit more on them.

      Hi
1ns on gragg Road just before the junction to owlet road bottom end near the church, that's now a nursery.
And the other 1ns hidden away at the top of a brick wall at the end of stead Street where the old carter's club was. Now flats..abdu house or something there called.
You can get to that by walking around towards the main road where kwik fit is and up the grass banking.
      Good luck.
Be nice to find out more about them.

A friend of mine said goodbye to a loved one recently and took the ashes to the Natural burial meadow in Cardiff. Its surrounded by beautiful landscapes. There is an open barn where a plaque can be left but the meadow the ashes are left in doesn’t have any markers. After seeing the neglect in some of the videos you have shown us I am starting to think the natural meadow burials site is quite a good idea. They dig a hole and you put a biodegradable box of ashes in the ground and have a service. Its then a beautiful peaceful place relatives can visit later if they want to feel close to their loved ones. Vandalism in cemeteries is on the increase unfortunately. I cannot understand the lack of respect by those engaging in such disgusting behaviour. When I was younger even the low life’s considered burial grounds in general too sacred for their destructive behaviour. Neglect is also on the increase. I hope they manage to clear some of this particular cemetery so more of the graves can be saved from nature. But then again if they do that then the wildlife will diminish somewhat. Thank you for sharing your visit. It was sad to see but also quite beautiful in some ways. Would it be ok to send you a message through your facebook page please. I’m curious about the equipment you use for your historical vlogs. 😀
