Loved this video! LRF is what got me back into fishing around 2015/16 after drifting away from it in my early teens. Those little eco gear pocket in kits are class, that's one of the great things about LRF....its such a lightweight method of fishing, you can go out with your rod, reel and one of them kits in your coat/trouser pocket and you will be set for the day. My favourite lures are the Isome worms as they are made from a biopolymer, so are definitely bio degradable and reportedly even safe for the fish to eat, which is handy if you get a blenny that wont let go and you can only get the hook out leaving the lure behind. I use them either on a small jig head like you were using there, or a size 6 or 8 gamakatsu worm 325 hook with a 1-2g tungsten cheb. the cheb'd set up is great for slightly larger fish in the bigger pools, but also good for dragging through the more weedy pools, and if you dont want to use a chebd set up then get a small block of tungsten putty and mold a small blob onto the bottom of the hook. My favourite haunt for lrf is around Seaton sluice at low tide (some cracking size/deep pools on the pub side of the 'cut') , but I do take the kids to either Blyth quayside, to north shields quayside so they can just drop a lure down the side and 'bob' it until something bites. the eldest is more steady on his feet now so I may start dragging him along the rocks this year, as normally when we have gone rock pooling with the kids both me and OH have had to watch a child each incase of slips or falls so not really been able to take a rod with me :)
It is a cracking way to fish, very active, minimal tackle and still catch fish- no monsters but that's not always the aim of fishing. Aye, those Isome's are a great bait and have the eco-friendly credentials to match. They also smell much nicer than the stinking Bait breath and Berkley Gulp. I used to fish Shields Quay a fair bit but not tried Bluth yet, is it any good?
I grew up there and fished the pier lots of times but it was a real eye-opener when I read a Japanese article about LRF, bought some tackle and tried those pools. Like you said loads of fun and quite addictive!

Caught my first ever fish this way, using a tiny size 4 hook, a piece of bacon rind as a lure and about 2m of line 'borrowed' from a mate; just scouting around in the rockpools looking for fish. He couldn't believe his eyes when I returned 30 minutes later with a fish hanging off the hook after he'd caught nothing in the sea using a rod, reel and a massive cod bait lol.
Rock pooling for Blennies is where i started out fishing 60years ago. Also loved hearing the Kittiwakes, we have a colony here too . ( so unusual this far south that the RSPB advertise a viewing spot each year).

There are some great gullies and pools at St Mary's island, and you sometimes hit some surprisingly big fish in them. I sometimes take my daughter and we catch prawns in the smaller pools by hand, and then try the bigger pools and gullies for fish. Beats being stuck in the house 😄
Great vid. Inspired me to get a Shakespeare lrf rod, some little jigs, scented lures and take the kids in the rock pools around Angelsey. We managed a few Blennies and they had a great time. This was our first time fishing, we had a lot of fish nibbling the bait but not that many proper bites - any tips?
Ah, Lee, that's great to hear! You will just get some nibbles but you could try a shorter length lure and/or a small hook size. Also, wait a moment after the first nibble before striking, if they don't hook up they could come back for another go. Hope this helps and tight lines👍🎣

At 3:27 in the top right corner look at the rock with the square cut into it, is this a Roman anchor?? it is recorded they had a port around there ? probably not ,there are loads of them but why so many and why so small? anyone know? I once caught a 4lb sea trout in a rock pool (I was 16) never repeated it. I've watched this again a bit more carefully and the 'rocks' look like cast concrete, put there I presume for coastal erosion protection, but compared to most of this type they are tiny, does anyone know the story??
It's amazing what you can pull out of a rockpool, that Smash Fishing keeps pulling out nice bass, but then he is on the Channel Isles. I grew up around this area so I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I don't answer, although I don't think it's roman. I do know that they built a railway to supply the concrete to the crane than laid the blocks for the pier, and maybe these smaller ones where part protection for the main construction of the pier?

i caught a bullhead on blutak when run out of bait as a kid. Try making mini 'jelly' lure from foil, or sweet wrapper. No need to buy trendy lures, kids. I also made river and pond floats from crow quill and peacock feathers as kid. Never walk past a disgarded feather even today. thnx for vids - superb.
The handle is a Spro Fresstyle Xtender 3.8m and the net head is an HTO Folding Net. The handle is great but does need a wash down after use and the head is ok but I'd probably go for a different next time. Just because hooks easily get snagged in the mesh since it's rubberised nylon thread rather than pure rubber. Hope this helps mate!
I need to know, how did you manage to bust the butt off the rod.? I have a mk1 hto rockfish that I've dropped numerous times, walked into rocks tip first and done other silly things generally considered to be bad for rods (haven't car doored it yet) and it's still perfect.
I found the Mk1 tip always split on me so used to fish them as a sawn off. This one was in my kayak rod holder and got jammed in a tree when i went under it, snapped off where the the holder ended. Silly mistake really.
May try this, don't have lrf gear but I'm thinking my course hooks with a split-shot and an old quiver-tip top section, bit of fun with the grandkids 👍
Yeah that will work fine a lot of the LRF aficionados use split shot and small spade end hooks and get smaller species, or at least hook up easier than I did in this vid. Hope you have a good one!
Patience isn't an required, ifa fish doesn't show in a minute or two then they won't. Time to move on to the next rock/pool. If they do show then the excitement of seeing their reaction is good enough to fill a couple of hours 😂 hope you have a good one!
Eyup Nathan. Well that's summat new. I love mucking about under rocks at low tide. Sorry I missed the last one for comments but that's what I was doing last weekend. The biggest lobster was the thick end of 3lbs and the bechdans were amazing. I also had small Pollock at high tice on the mighty Razor Claw - nothing else worked. I grew up fishing those rocks as a teen, and the bay, and it would never have occurred to me to jig in the pools! Lots of fun!

Yep it's concrete dating back to 1850's when the breakwater (or pier as us locals refer to it) was built.

I've walked those rocks many a time but would never have thought of rod fishing down in the pools. Great video thanks for posting.
