1968 Porsche 912: Third Owner

  • As a product manager for Porsche, Jonas Reinke’s career has taken him from Germany to Australia to the United States in an ongoing journey that has provided plenty of company cars to test along the way. He appreciates the modern machines and their mixture of history and cutting-edge capability, but his love for early Porsches goes all the way back to his childhood slot-car setup, along with a particularly memorable day of driving spent on the Great Ocean Road in a 1972 911E.
Between the slot cars and the real cars, it all led Jonas to the one featured in today’s film: his daily-driven 1968 Porsche 912. Between the classic design, the unique experience that comes with any analog car with an engine in the back, and the ability to perform the majority of the maintenance and optimizations on his own, Jonas has found a car that he can enjoy every day of the year, on the road or in the garage.

7:02 the “click”. Anyone who’s ever been in a 911 knows that “click”, followed by the scent of the interior and then followed by the thunk of closing the door and finally the sound of the engine firing up. It’s like a symphony of Porsche.

@@freliaz I'm so sorry to hear that. Due to health issues, I also had to sell my '88 Targa Carrera several years back. I still haven't gotten over it. I remember that "click" very well. And shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear was always a hoot.

First time I drove a classic Porsche was in a 356C with my dad in a rally. We came in first overall. Sadly he passed away earlier this year, but it has to be one of my favorite memories of him.

Truly a cherished memory. These are the types of memories that I hope to leave my son with. And they don’t even need to be that sexy. A day spent wrenching on a car together or just a quiet day fishing could end up being the best memory of your life.

Great to see a young person enthused with these older cars, 27 years ago when I was 20 I drove a 68 912 it was quite an experience. My father didn't buy the car opting for an 85 TVR 350i however a few years later he swapped it for an 88 9113.2 that's more like it!

I owned a SWB '66 912 and upgraded to a SWB 911 and have to say the 911 feels more special, however the 912 has a sweeter balance as the engine is much lighter than the 2.0lt unit. I will definitely be looking to add another 912 to the family at some point. They are great cars!

Of the six running Porsches I’ve owned, my ‘68 4-speed in this same ruby red is my favorite. Handling was out of this world - like my 944 - and I would pretend I was in a 935 even when driving slow. I took it to the Chattanooga Porsche dealer where a service manager asked me to take it to a private shop because they couldn’t justify their labor rate for such old technology.

Had the chance to see a Porsche 901, the handbuilt prototype. It looked a lot like this car, but the funny part was none of its parts were interchangeable. Everything was a completely different size. They didn’t stick with the 901 designation because Peugeot sued them, claiming the 0 in the middle of a number set was their trademark

I've said it before but it's really nice to see Petrolicious doing pieces on the "average" car guy who has a dream and he works hard to get it. even if it's the "base" model I'd happily watch this all day over the people that have 7, 911's because they have a ridiculous amount of money. and good on him for driving it. they're meant to be used, not hidden away to appreciate value

Beautiful SWB 912! I have a "work in progress" '69 912 that is now a '73RS tribute car with 2.4E engine. I just came across a non matching # '67 912 for sale and I'm thinking of making the buy. I've always loved the 912 because it has an engine that I know and can work on myself. You have inspired me to make the 912 my daily driver...if I end up making the purchase. Thanks for posting!!!

Yet another delightful film. I don't know what it is about old Porsches. They're not beautiful cars in the way most Ferraris are. The engines are in the wrong place and sound horrible, like an expensive VW Beetle and the handling is borderline lethal in the wet. And yet... and yet... I'd love one.
