The multi-hobby person; when waiting for a train and they see a plane or a car or whatever, they'll take a picture of it or video it (I'm one of those. Also, I'm a weather denier, so yeah.
As an Avgeek And a Railfan, if the railroad is dead for a while I will head down to the airport to get some photos and videos lol. + Yeah, As an Australian it could be raining or like 100 degrees but if theres a train coming by I wanna see it.
Here are some: The speed railfan: likes fast trains and often goes to locations where freight trains can reach speeds up to 70 mph, even if it is hours away The pacer: paces trains with their car and gets shots where the road parallels the tracks The kid with the unstable shot: self explanatory, can’t keep their phone/camera still
Here’s 2 ideas I came up with. The station railfan, always at the station, railfanning either the same train or just both passenger and freight, not bad at all. The zoom man. Whether on a hill or a flat area, that camcorder will be zoomed onto the train until it comes closer (I think we’re both guilty of this lmao)
I just develop Roblox train games. I, however, touch grass. And I volunteer for a RR museum. So, I'm a part-time roblox foamer. I love your vids, and I hope to see you on the Hinkley Sub someday. Sadly, we won't get much snow here in MN.
I’d definitely say I’m the “weather denier”, winters here in Montana are probably more hectic than Minnesota. Anyways here’s some types of railfans for ya! The signal enthusiast (similar to the crossing enthusiast just with signals) The abandoned line enjoyer, usually follows old rail routes on google maps. (I’m guilty of this) The “always in a rush”, always arrives to the tracks when a train is approaching and never stays in one spot
OMG these are great lol. There is also the multi-foamer, the who sets up by an airport or truckstop or whatever to watch trains plus planes, cars, trucks ,etc.... You get the idea :D -Jenny
Commuter Railfan and Weather Denier has to be me lol because This month i went railfanning and holy i was soaked and my passenger service is the Cascades Line and its usually just the same. I love my BNSF Subdivision but its a rainshow here like Minnesota in the Winter and Spring Months lol.
I'm definitely some mish-mash of perfectionist, camera enthusiast & elevation aficionado (even though I don't own a drone and will never risk my life on a highway overpass). Thanks for the funny videos! How about the shortline railfan? Especially those who thrive on shortlines that are hard to find any information about: no timetables, radio frequencies listed online are usually dead silent. Pretty much got to know somebody who works there to know when a train will run.
One railfan type you may want to consider (and the type I consider myself to be) is the "Historical Equipment" railfan. The kind of people you hardly ever see out on the mainline, and mostly confine themselves to railroad museums, tourist railroads, and the like, preferring to witness older and "more historical" railroad equipment, including steam locomotives and early diesels. The only time you'll see them out on the mainline is if a steam excursion or something similar is going on.
I got one! The shortline railfan. A railfan who claims to hate class 1 railroads and only cares for class 2 and 3 railroads. And God forbid any shortline gets taken over by a class 1.
@Honeydwarf85 hey man, don't feel bad, I can totally understand why people aren't very fond of class 1 Railroads! Trust me, just ask anyone who works for one!
definitely a weather denier, used to be a big crossing fan but now i typically only focus on the trains in my videos unless it’s like something rare or old. and it is sometimes annoying having the gate in my shot. Thankfully one of the lines i usually railfan don’t have gates at a lot of the crossings
I'm easily a weather denier because I've railfanned in 99 degree weather and temperatures in the single digits. Doesn't matter, nothing stops me from railfanning. (I don't even turn the heat on in the cold, I sit in the car and warm it myself)
I identify myself as "The Weather Denier", I had such an experience when I caught a BNSF 25TH Anniversary #6022 in the lead with an empty steel train, at that time in my city, a horrible rain was falling and I took a chance of a possible cold to catch that 6022
I also tried to take a shot of the Railroad Crossing, here in Mexico it is rare to see Railroad Crossings functioning like those in the United States, since most of them are vandalized and they don't even work, in my case I had to do a Railroad Crossing shot of a high speed train with 5 engines at the head leading a Manifest 🚆🚆
The “rolling stock lover” I’m one of these, and it’s when you’re someone who loves to see special rolling stock (fallen flags, military trains, special intermodal containers, etc.)
I’ve got one. The rail car enthusiast: This guy will go out and sit at a crossing, not care much about the power, and when an ex-drgw ballast car or something comes along in the middle of the train, they go crazy
And The Amtrak enjoyer: This type of railfan will go on a trip, and do everything with their friends weather it’s branch line stuff, mainline stuff, or whatever. And when an Amtrak train comes within a 30 min drive from wherever they are, they will go and see it yes matter if it’s raining backlit, or if it’s a… charger.
I live in Canada and we have a CP train that goes by 5 mph. In fact it stops at some crossing. I don’t know much about trains but I love watching your content.
i live along the NS pittsburgh line (NS) i get about 45 trains a day. I have 10K+ pics and thousands of videos and lots of pieces of paper of info about them
“The Famous One” the one railfanner everyone knows and wants to meet. Whether you live in their state or not you know of them. (Danny Harmon, A-train4014 productions, V12, etc. You’re well known and every foamer wants to meet you and become your best frend
I am a commuter train too like metra sometimes I seen fright trains too did I say it wrong? Anyways I seen like the same trains too but I seen different trains too like you man.
I love these videos. Something I would also want to see is a different type of crew or engineer video. I think it would be a good idea and it would make a great video.
I got one. The at-home railfan. The one who lives right beside the tracks and can watch trains from the comfort of their living room, back deck or front porch. Or the one that listens to scanners at home all the time. BNSF 1458, you decide which you want :)
LMAO, HAH, "The Camera enthusiast" That's me:) Adjusting those settings right up until the last second!!! LMAO... Keep the likes flowing we need a part 4!!! OMK
I got one… the train car counter or the train car enthusiast lol they are the ones that have film every last second and part of the train no matter how long it is or how fast it’s going. Than they post it on TH-cam and you get trolled thinking it’s a nice 15-20 minute video of trains but then it turns out to be a 15-20 min video of one long train going 3 MPH. They are also the ones who will threaten to unsubscribe from your channel because you cut out parts of the train in your videos. I will admit I was kind of this way when I started railfanning and recording videos but I have matured a little over the years lol
Railfan idea: The horn lover pt. 2. Attempts to get a horn show regardless of what crew is running, what engine is leading, and if it’s a quiet zone. Even if it’s a normal GEVO leader they will still try.
2:30 I agree, passive crossing best crossing, but I also think the active crossing signals are pretty cool, especially if it's something old or weird, like mechanical bells, some strange setup, or the glorious Griswold signal. Too bad none of them work anymore...
I have one: The EMD enjoyer This railfan probably only goes out to chase EMDs whether they’re on a road freight or local. Typically speaking about the SD40-2 or an SD60. Maybe an SD70MAC too.
2:00 Also Minnesotan. Can confirm, weather is not real. It (mostly) can't hurt you. I think I was only hailed on once, but I had just caught a Northshore train a few minutes before and was back in the car by then, so, worth it
The GP series former, the one who doesn’t like mainlines so he goes to a short line and only catches GP20s and GP38s! And it’s always the same train! Also, the multi-subdivision foamed, the one who films trains on two subdivisions tuning alongside each other with like 15 tracks! The train hopper, the one who records rides on train cars! The spur foamer, the one who likes to watch trains unload there products!
The fact is that there has been no trains in my entire county since 1991. There is a rail museum that I have visited quite a few times. I enjoy going there every time. And it has a working. crew car, which they barely run on the thing it’s a shame really
A little correction (sorry if corrections kinda annoy you) crossing-fans are supposed to be called signal-fans. By the way, some people in the railfanning community are rail-fanners+signal-fanners (I'm that type hehe I zoom into the light units of crossings before the train is very close to approaching).
The steam spotter, the guy who will literally drive across states just to see one steam locomotive because for whatever reason they can somehow afford that…
2:25 I am a huge crossing fan. I won’t drive 2 hours though, 20 minutes at most. Also I disagree with you about the crossbuck and sign vs signal. The signs are boring. I do agree that the signed crossings look better without a stop sign but still signals are better

FOr the online foamer...I heard this from someone in the weather community, and if you know how bad the weather got this year with storms and tornadoes and floods and hurricanes... So, several, both number and sorts of cameras get used for storm spotting or weather and can be moved around by the right people. One of these rail cams, as I'm told, got panned around to focus on a really serious looking storm, and a few minutes later, the NWS saw the same thing and put out a tornado warning. In the end the storm didn't hurt or kill anyone, it just sent a tornado through a rural area and didn't do a whole lot of damage, besides knocking down trees. Was this good enough for the online foamer? The camera helped the NWS know how bad the storm was, warning got put out, nobody was hurt or worse, and nothing was lost unless you count trees. No, no it wasn't good enough, at all. The camera operator should have ignored the rotating storm, in the foamers eyes,to focus on empty track in case,in case a train was coming.Spoiler,it wasn't the whole area was under a tornado warning, so the trains wouldn't be runnning anyway. THe foamers were pissed at Mother Nature and the NWS and not seeing a train, despite the severity of the situation at that time. One time in 2017 i saw a conrail sd-40 with two NS ace units trailing lead a autorack train through greensboro but i was four and i wasnt a train spotter but my dad took it its on his phone but i dont wanna upload it to youtube. Also for some reason the sd-40 had a k3la but it was flying.
heres one: The Always Annoyed Railfan these are the guys who always gets annoyed but either a kid pushing you, a karen yelling at you, or another train behind you. (The behind one is not a problem if you have two camreas in both directions)
I can't really get the chance to railfan, although there is this track very close thst you can hear it but can't see it. I know that it's Canadian Pacific owned, and I will probably catch a lot of dash 9s.

heres one: The Always Annoyed Railfan
these are the guys who always gets annoyed but either a kid pushing you, a karen yelling at you, or another train behind you. (The behind one is not a problem if you have two camreas in both directions)
I wasn’t aware watching commuter trains was a bad thing? That’s unfortunate
Not really. Its just his opinion
2:05 pun not intended
How about the folks (like me) who always look for trains when the go on vacation. Good luck getting a Ranger, great truck
I can't really get the chance to railfan, although there is this track very close thst you can hear it but can't see it. I know that it's Canadian Pacific owned, and I will probably catch a lot of dash 9s.
You should try to get a scanner and a decent antenna mounted on your roof so you can have some sort of heads up before the train passes
1:58 To hell with it, we're not made out of chocolate anyway!
Definitely a Roblox Railfanning enjoyer.
1:58 I’m a weather denier but at least in Minnesota you don’t have to deal with extreme heat 100 degrees
I'd add railfanns that doesn't use a camera. Just watches trains for the fun of it.
