    I was around when bowlers would complain about reactives when they first came out, these new urethanes aren't the same surfaces as back then when it was about 240-1000, the biggest difference now though is the lane patterns, patterns dictate scoring pace, urethane can be a big help on sport or challenge shots but can be a pain on house shots, either way, balls are made to be used not for displaying on shelves, there will be complainers on either side on various bowling topics, this is why the USBC should honestly keep their mouths shut and stick to what they are actually good at which is having an average database and holding tournaments, let the ball manufacturers get together and create a body that will dictate what ball specifications should fall under. in the end, it's the bowler more than the ball that will decide matches, as well as luck, old timers used to say that it takes 1% skill and 99% luck.

    • @stompingpeak2043
      @stompingpeak2043 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Right. If anything having a few people use urethane will result in the lanes not being bone dry as fast. Urethane is absolutely fine for any situation. See I think the straight ball/plastic bowling teams mess the lanes up more than urethane and reactive combined. All that does is push craters in oil over and over. Much more severe than any urethane carrydown or reactive dry

    • @LOGICNREALITY
      @LOGICNREALITY 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      usbc is a cult, ... I thought the whole point of a tournament was to do as good as you can, and use the best ball you can find.. weird lol

      @DimitrisDr3am 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stompingpeak2043 usually there straight bowlers bowl up the middle of the Lane though where there is a ton of oil. Pair that with the plastic balls they are throwing and the lack of revs and they do less damage than urethane or reactive players that hook the ball.
      The reason people moan about urethane is because it tends to create carry down more than reactive.

      I think your thing should only be used on league play. In the pro, circuits, I think it takes away from

    For me ... it the matter of the "control factor" . I'm a higher rev then speed bowler. With a torn bicep on my bowling arm. So urethane gives me an ability to still be able to bowl when reactive is just too violent off the spot.
    As for the question is urethane "good" or "bad" for the game of bowling.
    Well I believe that only time an history will decide this question. Just as the question of one vs two hands will be determined. All I know now is urethane allows me to go have fun with my friends an others who enjoy bowling.

We were successful at the recent Jr. GOLD Nationals in Grand Rapids and fell short during match play and couldn't match a URETHANE opponent missing our own PURPLE HAMMER that we didn't select over the IQ Tour Nano for our 5 ball arsenal. Running high rev's myself 2ls one hand no thumb! If I can stay in reactive I will but as most people know usbc regulation on oil is the minimum amount and no jurisdiction on sit time for the sitting agent to adhere the league pattern! Even though sitting agents require time to hold the pattern! Some longer then others ! When the oiler gets done and then practice it's counter productive for consistency on averages! I got pushed into urethane because it was the only ball that could hold the line but as you know that was game 1 , then started to have to swing urethane and yup we all know that eventually it will start splitting! And yay lol it's still a superb tool to be used when the pattern calls for it or need that backend control! Great video

    There are some that argue that the uc3 is not a true urethane cover stock hence it's drastic reaction compared to every other urethane ball on the market. It almost has an early reactive cover stock type reaction from the 90s to it. I love the color of it for sure

    Don't know whether it is bad for the sport, but it has to be bad for the manufacturer's in the sport... The over reliance on just a handful of urethane balls has to suppress sales at least a bit of other options...

    • @bastardiniho
      @bastardiniho 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not sure this is actually the case. Generally people dont own "just" urethane, its an added tool (that some rely on a lot however) but generally i feel like urethane is mostly a tool added for early on in blocks, or on certain patterns, most still have all the other balls for later or on easier patterns. I feel like urethanes are just an additional thing they have made that they sell, they rarely replace reactives exclusively except for a few players.

    I think Urethane is necessary in most everyones bowling bag, especially as bowling centers continue to reduce the amount of oil (volume) on the lanes.
    However, I personally think it is bad for competitive (PBA).
    As a bowling fan, and an individual that would like to see the sport grow...I think that the flashy premier bowling balls catch the attention of new bowlers.
    If you look at other sports, most viewers appear to be attracted to high scores and record beating, flashy gear and apparel, and a little bit of drama and old fashioned competition between players.
    Anyway, just my humble opinion.

    Urethane is good of you throw it right. Pink widow is best when using firm wrist and soft hands, letting the ball float off the hand, never hitting up or snapping hard. Purple is more forgiving, but keep speed matched for the amount of oil you are working with. Both will hook the entire lane.
    I have no experience with storm urethanes, only hammer/brunswick.
    The bigger the rg and smaller the diff, the more heat you can bring. The lower the rg and bigger the diff, you have to be more careful to make sure the core is moving complimentary to the cover (hence the recommendations for the pink)

      Its very good to have one in your bag for sport patterns. Heavy oil short patterns is where urethane excels. Some people also use them on medium patterns. As for revs you can try to be softer on the hand or keep the same revs but less axis rotation (more forward roll) and it will hook less

      @@joerivanderkamp7280 Different balls for different situations. If youre looking for an all arounder probably the purple hammer. Pitch Black has a hard time with larger angles, where the purple hammer has a more pearl coverstock so you can get a bit more midlane on it compared to pitch black. But the pitch black rolls super early and very smooth shape, and there are definitely times you want that. I will say if youre looking for a ball for playing in house shot leagues, stay away from Urethane unless you plan on buying multiple balls. I say this because once the lanes transition, urethane becomes harder and harder to use, and if its the only ball in your bag you will be at a severe disadvantage

    Is it good or bad for the sport? I think it’s just a point now where people need to learn to adjust THEIR game if someone else is using urathane. Don’t sit and complain about it. Switch balls or adjust where you are throwing / your hand position. Use it as a way for you to improve your game

    I was Gifted an Overseas Black Widow Purple Pearl Urethane... (Purple Hammer Cover with Gas Mask core).. From the Original Run of them a couple years ago prior to the Brunswick Buyout... Likely Not USBC Legal anymore... But damn is this thing a whole nother animal... I'm about 17 boards left with my feet than the OG Purple Hammer... I'm a 180 average bowler in League... Shot 734 with it my first week out... Pumped for League coming this week... This comment adds no substance to this video... I'm just pumped my friend didn't like it and gave it to me

    I pretty much grew up with urethane so I have no problem with it. All these whiners that bitc..........err I mean complain about urethane during league crack me up. My problem being a lefty I don't get to "mess up" the shot on the right. If I was right handed I would throw urethane just to hear the whiners whine! Plus urethane doesn't crack like reactive. Enjoyed Jimoo in this vlog granted he's no Barks! LOL Keep'em coming

      So the cracking around my ring finger on my Hy Road Max is something that’s common place with reactive ?

    • @thebigeasy8609
      @thebigeasy8609 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cwagner4704 Yes. Reactive resin balls lose some of their chemicals through evaporation. If you can store your bowling balls in sealed plastic bags to prolong their longevity.

    • @williamkelemen8190
      @williamkelemen8190 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you don't have to drain the oil out of them like reactive balls, but you have to wipe them dry every time you throw the urethane.

  • @metpark8701
    @metpark8701 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm old enough when urethane first came out and replaced plastic. The Black Angle, the Black Hammer and, especially, the Black U-Dot were absolute game changers. If I had a preference, I would keep urethane and ban reactive. But that's not going to happen. I say, "Keep them both." There's a place for each in the game and if your "look" is disturbed by urethane, too bad. Resin also destroyed urethane's look when the Xcalibur first came out. Make better adjustments, throw the ball better, just keep the whining to yourself. After all, if you're good enough, you'll figure it out. If you're not and start whining, you're a toad. That includes one Sean Rash for acting like a toad when he's better than that.

    So I currently have a Widow Ghost and a Venom Shock. On one league it's a house shot and the other is a sport shot league. The Ghost just snaps way too hard on both patterns to be used and the Venom is so snappy I have to throw it pretty much from board one all the way out to the gutter just to have a chance at striking the pocket. Otherwise it snaps early and either misses the head pin entirely or Brooklyns. I was looking at urethane, or thinking about it rather, so I can move more to the middle. I like how straight the Pitch Black plays but the Purple Hammer looks good too.

  • @SnabaG
    @SnabaG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Congratulations on making the team! I can't seem to buy a Pitch Black at my local PSO. They do however have a purple hammer that I might buy when its in stock.
    This video has me considering a Black widow pink urethane instead as I really like the shape of a pitch black, would you say thats closer to a pitch black than a purple hammer due to it rolling earlier?

    • @jrproshop
      @jrproshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely agree. The early motion is much more comparable to the Pitch Black as opposed to the Purple Hammer!

    hi guys, i have a question for arsenal building. I'm left handed , 17mph 440 rpm, i'am using really often onlyl urethane in league. I've in my bag pitch black and purple hammer, i'm thinking about put in a third urethane ( my favourite is the new hammer pink ). What do you think about? is a good choiche have these three urethane balls bag? and should i use same layout ?

    Urethane is wonderful for the sport as it brings back the skill set we had in the golden era of bowling before resin balls changed the face of the game.

  • @nicholasmartin2645

    I think urethane makes the lanes too unplayable. Too many people use urethane, because they see pros use them consistently, even though they may not know what happens at the back of pattern or why they want to use it in the first place. It defines the game to have righ revs, more miss room and less on accuracy and good ball reaction through the lanes and pins.

    • @jerryalexander8803
      @jerryalexander8803 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Urethane doesn't make any lane condition unplayable, plus most of these urethanes today aren't even true urethanes like from the 80s and 90s

  • @Blue-cq2hl
    @Blue-cq2hl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Urethane is like anything where it's part of the game and don't think it's much either way. It's good as it gives options and isn't really much different from having weaker or stronger balls in general. It's mostly just a bad time if you don't know how to cope or sometimes if people are all over the place with it but that's part of the game too.

  • @Jackal_Blitz

    When would you even want a shape like the Black Widow makes? It reminds me of the Hot Cell and Fever Pitch that everyone hated - tons of early traction and not enough motion downlane to counteract how far left you need to get to clear the fronts with it. It just seems like the least desirable shape imaginable.

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes, the issue isn’t how to strike on a pattern where you have to give away the pocket. A ball like the widow is great for squaring up and piping it up 10 where you still need to get through the heads. The big issue with reactives - and it’s been that way since 1992 - is that they have put bowlers into the habit of moving their target farther down the lane. With urethane, you bring back less of left to right ball motion and more forward to back motion, meaning you are learning (or relearning) how to move your target closer to you.

  • @feddyvonwigglestein3481

    I don't know really what my opinion is on urethane. On one hand, I'm not someone who wants to tell people they can or can't use something without good reason. On the other, I have to admit that seeing pros throw nothing but urethane on TV gets very boring, especially if they're a Brunswick brand staffer, and again still if they're two handed. It just makes me lose interest. It's as if people nowadays have so much damn rotation on the ball that they can't even control it - and it's much easier, and makes more sense, to use something that just isn't going to react as opposed to messing with your mechanics and getting all twisted up that way.

    Are those urethanes shiny on purpose? They look like they could use a little bit of surface, or some cleaning lol.
    Also you should try sport patterns from the PBA or the IBF, the harder the better to look, on tougher conditions.
    And yes, urethane is useful. Another tool.
