what it does moves more oil from the heads to the breakpoint and beyond. You could get that motion with weaker or short pin reactive and not destroy the pattern.

In Pensacola Navy comms school, it was a hefty walk from the barracks to the lanes on base, but I went home on leave to Calif. and brought that ball back to Florida. When stationed on a little base in nowhere, Morocco, a ball on the rack was the same Dick Weber as mine, drilled close to my hand!! About 2000 a local PBA pro resurfaced and regripped my ball. I still have my Fab Blue (matte) and Pink (polished) Hammers from 1989 or 1990. Those balls were always with me back in the day. Since those are 15 lbs, I recently bought a 15 lb Purple Hammer. Problem is......it's been eons since I bowled competitively and I don't think I can still throw a 15 lb ball :'(
I’ve never liked to used Urethane, the reason is the the ball just falls off my left hand to much when I bowl. This normally causes me to drop the ball off my fingers or the ball isn’t consistent on how it rolls. (I’m two handed by the way also got the purple hammer)

I just started bowling again after a 40 year layoff. I have a black urethane 1st generation hammer. Over 40 years old. I shoot 1st arrow or 2nd arrow depending on the hook. Thinking of getting a new ball. What would be a good choice. I'm thinking a Raw hammer orange/black. ???
Hey Question: How come my old Ebonite Turbo RED urethane ball (1991) always rolls over the finger or thumb holes down lane, no matter how I release the ball? Ive tried different hand positions and it always rolls over the thumb hole and just doesnt hook like it did back when I was a kid 30 years ago!
The blue hammer is axis weighted. With the new rules will you be plugging it? I have one laid out the same way but I haven’t plugged it yet. I assume the PBA is following USBC’s rules.
Brad and Kyle, I have a question My friend told me that when I bowl with Urethane I shouldn't wipe it off, but after we finish bowling I should clean it, he said that if I wipe it off I won't get carry down and the Urethane won't mess other people's lines up if I wipe it off, is that all true?, should I really just clean off my ball after I finish bowling instead of wiping the ball off after each shot like a normal ball?, what is the right thing to do?
The ball still picks up oil on it's way down the lane, so even if you wipe it off you still move the oil from the shot you just threw, but you also guarantee consistent reaction in the oil by cleaning the surface before each shot. Urethane shape is so reliant on its surface that if you arent wiping it off between each shot you're killing your own ball reaction and hurting your chance to score.
I'd clean it, the purpose of urethane is to handle short patterns and to drag oil down to the dry area where you can use it later with a different ball. Just my 2¢.👍
Thanks Brad and Kyle for the Video! Can't agree more on the Purple Urethane as it seems to be my favorite ball. My rev rate is lower than most So I am able to stay right and increase ball speed as the lanes dry to constantly continue to Hammer the Pocket. My Hammer Black urethane is a great spare ball but without the rev rate of many of the pro's not ideal for me to use as a strike ball. Curious what your top Reactive balls are? [Use a Black Hammer Legend]
Kyle when the purple hammer gets to a point like that where it doesn’t hook back. Wouldn’t a Brunswick Twist or a lay flare layout work as a next step up
throw a storm natural with no worries...on juiced up house shot. 300 with natural, old nitro and even a white dot (poly) and a polished up Gyro that went 15 to 7 and back.
Marshall Holman, Mark Roth, Pete Weber , Amletto Monacelli and Del Ballard had no problem getting urethane to hook back (except, of course , when Ballard tried to put his breakpoint outside of the one board)
I use the new Blue Hammer (Vibe Core) regularly on my league house shot. How does the shape differ between the original Blue Hammer and the new Blue Hammer with the Vibe Core. I also have a Black Widow Hammer. How does that compare with the Purple Hammer. Thanks, and I love your videos (and share them all the time).
Would urethane still be an option for a lefty, since we typically don't move as far inside as righties, and we wouldn't see the problem you just demonstrated?
Black Widow is asymetrical and Purple is symetric. On top of that, the Purple is an unshined pearl cover versus solid urethane cover for the Widow. My Widow will out hook the Purple, but the shapes are very different.
@@ksjlb2612 yeah I know the asymmetric balls are more of a hockey stick pattern as compared to the more rounded curve of a symmetric ball. My interest was more about the coverstock. I have a BW urethane that I've never drilled and I was curious about the comparison between the two. Thanks for the reply.
Nice video. I would clarify though (as per observations) that Purple Hammer is not plain urethane. Even on Hammer's website, they state it has a pear additive. So it is probably at least a urethane hybrid of some sort, if not just a mild reactive cover.
@@bowlingxp8345 test it man, the information is out there. You think no one's tried to figure it out? Pitch Purple has plasticizer. Pearl Hammer does not. Tank Blitz has plasticizer, Desert Tank has plasticizer. Pitch Black does not, and neither does the Black Hammer, Widow Urethane, or even the Purple Tank
@@ChevyRedneckGFX I know all about the other balls you mention. I am specifically asking about the purple hammer. I dont have one to test. What "information" is "out there" ? All the indications of the performance of the purple hammer, is that it must have plasticizer. I have not seen any evidence or test that proves that it is 100% plain urethane and thus contains no plasticizer. What have YOU found. I am interested.
@@bowlingxp8345 i literally have one, and so does my friend. They don't absorb oil. That's the number one flag that your ball has plasticizer. Purple Hammer is a Pearlized Urethane cover, but it doesn't absorb oil . It's hard to explain how it's"pearlized" yet still urethane and doesn't absorb oil. A good way to compare is like a Storm Mix, although that's way way under the specific purple hammer potential. If you're thinking it can't possibly have overall hook potential like it does as a urethane you're sadly mistaken. In fact the Widow Urethane (Solid urethane cover) hooks over more boards than the purple hammer. The Purple Hammer just clears the fronts very well and has good downlane motion that gives it a hard hitting roll.
Four years ago we moved across country and I got rid of my old bowling balls except my first ball (Petraglia LT-48). Mr. Sherman is making me regret having thrown out my Columbia Black U-Dot. But having bowled 41 years continuously, I am more worried about ever bowling again.
I had the U^2 instead for a while, it was ok, but sometimes wouldn't match up and reacted spotty. I didn't keep an OG LT-48 because it hooked at my toes. I have the Rock version Did you have a yellow dot as well?
One big question if you get this, I've heard players on tour having 14+lb balls, would you recommend having in my arsenal a 14lb ball? Exactly what weight?
@@liambarron9772 I have some 14, some 15, and some 16. In short, the further inside your break point is, the heavier the ball should be. Playing a fall back shot with 14 lb. is just asking for 5-7s, 4-5-7s, and 8-10s (righty)

Then one night I bowled on non urethane burnt lanes i shot a 300 on a KEGEL Middle Road. Big difference, move right and slow down speed. Or should be illegal. But I don’t make the rules.
why weight holes in the urethane. you cant use them in a couple of weeks. back in the 80s my black and blue hammer were drilled like yours. big hole drilled thru the double circle faball logo
i got gifted a hammer black widow urethan.. that thing was just too damn strong. Stronger than my Motiv Trident Abyss so i gave it away to a friend. i just dont get warm with urethane balls.. i find pearl balls work the best for me.
Correct, you don't want to move too far past Center arrow with urethane because it will start going light for sure. Unless of course you're Jakob Buttruff or Jesper Svensson. The laws of physics do not apply to those two gentlemen.
The problem with urethane is that it picks up oil and drags it out to the dry which creates a pocket of oil and makes you adjust more when using a non urethane ball
Why use urethane when you can create the same reaction shape with a strong asymmetrical ball with a short pin to pap?? I understand being able to use a strong hand position and play right... but urethane absolutely wrecks the pattern with its carry down where a reactive will extend the patterns playability.
@@emerald3331 not with the ball being at the proper surface. You want over/under... try having 6 people throw urethane on the pattern and you will run into dry heads and carry down..
@@BigSkyBowler Bowling is competitive whether it is league or tournament. If you were bowling 6 others who threw lines that made your react differently, would you say the same thing if they were throwing reactive balls? There isn't a soul in my home house who says a thing about anyone throwing urethane because it still boils down to how you use your equipment and skill to score. One of my competitors described the situation like this. When he saw how others were playing the lanes, he would adjust his line to stay inside their lines so he would not be affected by the others on the lane.
Doc I understand your opinion but I don't see it as exactly right. I don't care what anyone says; strong short pin-to-pap Asymmetrical resin DO NOT replicate urethane ball motion. Urethane rolls super early and responds very gradually to friction. Strong resins with a short pin-to-pap will stand up and go forward smoothly (which is what you want if you don't like urethane). Essentially, they are two different types of reactions which both provide more control on shorter patterns. I get your point about urethane wrecking a pattern but there is a reason that many pros on TV still through urethane; it cannot be duplicated by strong short pin layout reactives!

Marshall Holman, Mark Roth, Pete Weber , Amletto Monacelli and Del Ballard had no problem getting urethane to hook back (except, of course , when Ballard tried to put his breakpoint outside of the one board)
I have a black and blue tank that were made back in the 80's
I use the new Blue Hammer (Vibe Core) regularly on my league house shot. How does the shape differ between the original Blue Hammer and the new Blue Hammer with the Vibe Core. I also have a Black Widow Hammer. How does that compare with the Purple Hammer. Thanks, and I love your videos (and share them all the time).
Black widow urethane stands up much sooner because of the easy rotating gas mask core and it's solid instead of pearl.
Is urethane an option when the heads fry
Does your purple urethane have a weight hole?
Would be nice if you had/showed/discussed the BRUNSWICK U Motion...
Not being shitty, I just don't know how it stacks up! Great bowling content guys...
Por favor inforrma cual es el patron que esta jugando en cada video
gracias
Would urethane still be an option for a lefty, since we typically don't move as far inside as righties, and we wouldn't see the problem you just demonstrated?
What about the BW Urethane guys.....where does that fit in? Is it stronger than the purple?
Black Widow is asymetrical and Purple is symetric. On top of that, the Purple is an unshined pearl cover versus solid urethane cover for the Widow. My Widow will out hook the Purple, but the shapes are very different.
@@ksjlb2612 yeah I know the asymmetric balls are more of a hockey stick pattern as compared to the more rounded curve of a symmetric ball. My interest was more about the coverstock. I have a BW urethane that I've never drilled and I was curious about the comparison between the two. Thanks for the reply.
What size ball do you guys use for league or tournaments? How heavy?
When you talk about different balls, let us know how you drill them, please? To go long, to hook/flip etc. Thanks Aaron
Nice video. I would clarify though (as per observations) that Purple Hammer is not plain urethane. Even on Hammer's website, they state it has a pear additive. So it is probably at least a urethane hybrid of some sort, if not just a mild reactive cover.
Pearl urethane is still urethane, just a newer style of urethane. Doesn't have plasticizer and absorb like the Pitch Purple
@@ChevyRedneckGFX How do you know for certain that the Purple hammer doesnt contain plasticizer?
I have the Rock version
Did you have a yellow dot as well?
Almost time to plug that balance hole on that Faball.
Just curious what surface do you use on each of your urethane?
Additionally throwing urethane up right, you can also throw it up 15 and somehow make it work
HELLO! how are you my friend. my name is Michael from Philippines. one question. this bowling ball is standard weight. thank you.
black widow urethane?
One big question if you get this, I've heard players on tour having 14+lb balls, would you recommend having in my arsenal a 14lb ball? Exactly what weight?
@@liambarron9772 I have some 14, some 15, and some 16. In short, the further inside your break point is, the heavier the ball should be. Playing a fall back shot with 14 lb. is just asking for 5-7s, 4-5-7s, and 8-10s (righty)
@@liambarron9772 Also, dry lanes and/or high friction surfaces might favor 14 lb. because you can throw it harder.
I'm wondering what do pro bowlers do with their bowling balls after they get too many games or just don't do what you what you want them to do?
That generally doesn’t happen unless the ball’s core is damaged. If a ball has chips or small cracks you can always get it refinished.
@@elijahlefavour8562 yea but they drill up 3-4 or more balls per tournament i highly doubt that pros are running around with 120 bowling balls at the end of the year. back when i was a kid at the end of the tournaments they would give away a lot of the balls. they pros don't come here anymore so i haven't seen them for years so i don't know if they still give balls to the kids that are running around.
If they didn't blow up the lanes i don't think people would have issues with them
I bowled on sport shot and we switched lanes every two games of 4 a night. I always ended up bowling in urethane burnt lanes by the same team. Then one night I bowled on non urethane burnt lanes i shot a 300 on a KEGEL Middle Road. Big difference, move right and slow down speed. Or should be illegal. But I don’t make the rules.
I don't love urethane but it's no one job to optimize the playing surface to your game it's your job to figure out the shot.
Main ball Black Widow 2.0, spare ball is a polished black Hammer. That's all you need really.
I have an old LT 48 for when I can't keep reactive on the lane. But I don't think Brad sold many balls with this video.
why weight holes in the urethane. you cant use them in a couple of weeks. back in the 80s my black and blue hammer were drilled like yours. big hole drilled thru the double circle faball logo
i got gifted a hammer black widow urethan.. that thing was just too damn strong. Stronger than my Motiv Trident Abyss so i gave it away to a friend.
i just dont get warm with urethane balls.. i find pearl balls work the best for me.
Overkill gas mask core
Why do they blow down the hole in the ball?
for grip
@@doppler4950 what about the germs ?
Correct, you don't want to move too far past Center arrow with urethane because it will start going light for sure. Unless of course you're Jakob Buttruff or Jesper Svensson. The laws of physics do not apply to those two gentlemen.
You coulda just stopped at purple hammer
Short pin reactive >>>>>>> Urethane
Looks like you fouled at 4:15 but its probably my bad camera angle.
Throwing the UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Brunswick U-motion is the best urethane ball
Lol my arsenal is made up of 6 balls, 4 of which I got for free from neighbors. Total pro equipment 😅
Purple Hammer…One ball to rule them all
The problem with urethane is that it picks up oil and drags it out to the dry which creates a pocket of oil and makes you adjust more when using a non urethane ball
It's all about adjustments
All the same layout?
Why use urethane when you can create the same reaction shape with a strong asymmetrical ball with a short pin to pap??
I understand being able to use a strong hand position and play right... but urethane absolutely wrecks the pattern with its carry down where a reactive will extend the patterns playability.
A lot of times you'll get over/under reaction, but with a urethane ball you'll get a more consistent reaction.
Personally I won't use urethane I'd use plastic or a short pin reactive ball.
First we need to find an open bowling alley
im getting a 8 lb bowling ball for christmas
