- In the mid-80s, a group of Zastava engineers set about creating the company's best car to date. Using Fiat facilities and working from a Fiat Tipo proposal by Giorgetto Giugiaro, they come up with a roomy, clean C-segment design with a 0.32 coefficient of drag.
The first production Floridas leave Kragujevac lines on October 2nd, 1988. The name is a reference to the company's success Stateside, where the Yugo finds 145,511 homes between 1985 and 1991.
Zastava hopes that the $7,500 Yugo Florida will join the Yugo in the U.S., but the Yugoslav Civil War forces the company to shelve its plans. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Poor Zastava; everyone said Yugoslavia couldn't compete, but this car shows that they were more than capable. Giugiaro may have penned the shape, but he did for many other carmakers as well. It really was an impressive achievement and testament to why the Western countries wouldn't want to leave Yugoslavia alone.

For a 1988 it didn't look too bad I guess. Very similar to the VW Golf of the time. Huge improvement on the shape beforehand.
rear wheel side is almost the same like on Golf 2 ...Golfs rear shock absorbers are the same. Its extremly stable in turns and can turn at pretty much high speeds.

moja mama pa oce sta vozila modrega Yugota se leta 1991... in dosti drugih familij je furalo Zastavine proizvode v moji drzavi. Vsaj en lep spomin, ki mi je ostal od Jugoslavije, ceprav sem se rodil leta 1986... dokler ni prisla tista brezvezna vojna leta 1991... na Yugota pa nisem cisto pozabil in sem si ga kupil nekaj mescov po 18 rojstnem dnevu :P
Posebno so ga obozevale punce :)

E gde smo tada bili, floridin dizajn je uradio Djudjaro, tada je to bio je svetski je uradjen auto...a onda je rat dosao.
Da nije bilo rata Zastava bi bila svetski brend.

Florida was never produced under the name zastava, it was newer so it was always "Yugo florida". Now, when Yugoslavia broke apart, cars are again called "zastava". This is now "zastava florida" or "floridaIN" (slightly re-designed and better equpped), there is also "zastava koral" or "koralIN" (famous yugo:) and "zastava skala 55"
My grandfather has one older than 20 years. It is a great car! Never had any bigger mallfunction! Very cheap. Best car ever, to bad that the production stoped :-(

Zastava tends to inspire some knee-jerk reactions but, come on, that's got little basis in reality. The Chevette was RWD when the best subcompacts were moving to FWD. By the time the Florida came out, Zastava had been doing FWD for more than 15 years. You couldn't get 1,280 liters of cargo into a Chevette, or squeeze in a third of that + 5 people. And no Chevette ever got close to a 0.32 coefficient of drag. Yes, it says "Zastava" - but Giugiaro signed off on parts of this car ...

You cannot hope to judge coefficient of drag on looks alone. A boxy, 2008 Scion xB has a 0.32 coefficient of drag (equal to the Florida's).

It was the best car from communists country in 1988. Much better than Lada Samara, Skoda Favorit or FSO Polonez
Yes, it came out in 1987, and had best characteristics of all socialist cars. There was a version with 1.3 engine with Bosch EFI system. I have second upgraded version from 2002, and it has alarm, central locking, seat warmers, electronic windows, electronic rear door opening, both petrol and LPG. After 18 years it still runs great.

"Zastava 101" has been in production since 1976 I think and it sure isn't their latest model. It has just been slightly "renovated" this year. Their latest model is "Zastava 10", while it's the 10th model of car being produced in factory. You can see it at the end of video. It is, in fact, the old fiat punto with zastava badge. At first they were produced in fiat factory. I believe this car came out in 2006.

Yes, it is but they have very low production numbers (around 15.000 cars/year. Cars are no longer called "yugo" but "zastava", like they use 2 be. The official company name was "Zavodi crvena zastava" (red flag plant) but in the mid 80's the trade mark for cars was changed in "yugo" because of commercial reasons. "Yugo" stood for Yugoslavia and it was easyer to pronounce. The smallest car, "zastava jugo" became "Yugo (45, 55, later koral, GVX etc.)" "zastava 101" became "Yugo skala 55"

Yugoslavia civil war, the factory was bombed, and the country was split. The car industry eventually bounced back, but the plans to sell to the USA were dropped.

I live in Kragujevac where Yugo was produced and that computer on 0:06 is Silicon Graphic Workstation,my mother had it in office where she worked and for that time it was amazing machine , i went to her job multiply times just to use it

hmm...ok....its 2009 and i can STILL find parts for my chevette.....or make them outta a few pudding cups and chewing gum. the florida....excuse me...flor EEE da....is an obscure vehicle. trust me....i vote for the underdog....for christ's sake....i drive a chevette.....maybe 3 cars less worthy that mine, but it still chugs along. but it does have auto and a/c life is good.

andjelko2000, mozda ce ti biti smijesno, ali taj mjenjac JESTE Porsche-ov, i nije zastario. Radi se o tome da je zastava preuzela mjenjac od Lade Samare, a za taj model je Lada platila Porsche-u da uradi dizajn mjenjaca. Porsche inace prodaje inzenjering usluge mnogim firmama po svijetu.

motor 1.6 je bil mislen za florido... se celo nekaj so jh sestavl. V glavnem so bile misljene za izvoz. Serijsko pa pac niso sle u proizvodnjo...:) Danes pa je "flojka" dobavljiva tudi z motorjem 1.6. Samo ne pri nas:/
posle 2000.god su u Floridu stavljali 1.6L Citroenov motor od 98 konja i 1.3 EFI ...ja imam 1.3 EFI
