    Remember, the NOSTROMO is pretty much a container-ship in space not an explorer or military ship. The med-bay is equipped for dealing with normal injuries and illnesses not with something like an invasive species. The same goes for the training of the crew. It is trained to pull heavy things to space safely. The few lessons they had about dealing with the unknown are years ago and probably long forgotten

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The NOSTROMO was an oil-refinery in space. Not a container ship. In the time this was set, Earth had run out of oil, and had to obtain it elsewhere in the galaxy.

The true story has been misheard or misremembered through the retelling that somehow people think that the actors were just improvising the entire scene even though they would surely have noticed John Hurt tucked under the table with a huge prosthetic on him and a bunch of special effects people all over the place that they would've needed to make this work. People love telling people the cool story first usually preceded with the term "fun fact" which is a term I have come to very much despise. That and underrated. Not so much the word but the fact nobody knows what it means so they use it for almost anything.

    When this came out in theaters in the late 1970's, there was no internet, no hype. It showed up in theaters, and only the most devoted sci-fi fans had even heard about it. Blood and gore and graphic violence are the hallmarks of modern horror yet except for Kane you never see any of the others actually killed. You see shadows and a few frames but nothing particularly graphic. Scott gives you just a frame or two of the creature and then its shadows on the walls or strobing lights and your imagination fills in all the rest. It is the suspense and the anticipation which make the movie so effective.

      I think sometimes that is one thing that can make these types of films so good more when it comes to a film like Alien. Sometimes it's what you don't see that is more scary then what you do see.

      @@amandacogger3075 There is an old rant about movies and books which includes the line, "Hollywood cannot live up to the power of your imagination." So many directors try to show you exactly what they can _imagine._ But the good ones show you just enough to let your imagination run wild. And nobody knows what scares you better than you do. :)

      @@robertanderson6929 I've always liked horror films that do and like how the directors keep the audience in mind when doing it and for me is a big part of what makes Alien such a great film and James Cameron one of the best in business

    • @robertanderson6929
      @robertanderson6929 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amandacogger3075 Yes. And it is important to remember that these movies were made at a time when studio execs didn't meddle with what got put on film in the way they do today. Were _Alien_ being made today there would likely be some toy division exec demanding more screen time for the creature so the kiddie would recognize the toy in the stores. And a theme park exec demanding at least three action scenes that could be converted into attractions or rides. And then of course there would just be the wannabe writers at the studio who would be faxing new lines of dialog and entirely new scenes to the set with orders to film them and they will decide what goes into the final film during the editing. That last one is actually what happened to Alien 3. The director claimed that the studio literally installed a fax machine on set and while he was trying to film they were faxing him new scenes and dialog. Alien 3 is an infamous flop due to studio interference.

I'm not totally against Alien 3 because I think there was a lot of potential for it to be really good and I liked the idea of Ripley becoming the mother of the thing she hates but the greedy buggers ruined it even though it could of made them a hell of a lot more success had they allowed it to stay in the true fashion of what the first 2 films were

    You would think, in a ship with a procedure that requires 24 hours of decontamination after contact with an extra-terrestrial life before one can be allowed into the ship, they would have a medical facility _outside_ the main body of the ship for just such a situation that's every bit as well equipped and supplied.

    1:02 Space is vast and ships travel (relatively) slowly. Better to hibernate the crew than have them go "crazy in outer space."
    2:51 Not bad for matte paintings, models, and children in costume, long before DFX, eh?

    3:46 Curiosity...
    5:00 The first indication that Science Officer Ash is acting strangely.
    7:45 How's that for a Jump Scare?
    8:08 So, this old movie is Scary?
    8:41 Danger! Danger! Engineer Brett!
    9:14 Some reviewers/viewers thought that "Jones the Cat" WAS the Alien!
    9:20 How's that for a computer "Syntax Error"?
    10:22 Hello, Captain Dallas...
    11:18 When Ripley slams Ash into the wall and he didn't react, that was my "WTF! He's NOT Human!?" moment.
    13:14 That's a Stinger, NOT a "copulation appendage," as some have thought.
    15:48 Getting ready for Cryosleep, NOT strip tease!
    16:00 Ripley seems to be talking to herself. Nope, she's singing this: th-cam.com/video/CD1j4buZnJI/w-d-xo.html
    16:41 Burn baby, Burn!
    17:12 "One of the shortest movie I've seen in my life?" Some reviewers have complained about "no action/it's a drag/slow moving"
