Alien is an opera in movie form. The cold silence of space as the Nostromo ascends to the planet. The perfect highs and lows of the music just where it needs to be. How the camera dances through the ship catching perfect lighting. Quiet when there needs to be, with just the slightest hint of background sounds. Nothing feels out of place and every actor giving a stellar, believable performance. I'm still in amazement every time I watch it.

@@Gfors85one of the key points is that the marines get tricked by the corporate guy into not being able to use their normal munitions claiming they were too close to the reactor.
Someone remind Joe they weren't "easy to kill" in Aliens, the first time the marines run into them they literally get their "asses kicked" to quote Hudson. Wierzbowski, Apone, Crowe, Dietrich, Frost, Drake all get KIA/MIA in the first encounter with the xenomorphs. Even when they disobey orders and go weapons free the only two to be killed at that point were Crowe and Dietrich, meaning them using their weapons accelerated the hive response. People tend to forget that the xenomorphs in Aliens are not an amorphous mass of mindless bugs like in Starship Troopers but effectively an enemy military force... that use their bare hands in lieu of guns and firepower... with the Queen being effectively a general or belligerent commander/leader.
yea, that and the fact that they are all soldiers trained to kill while in the first movie there where only seven of them and they were just a regular cargo ship crew so just one xenomorph was a handful
To this day, the best gift I've ever received was from a girl I was dating in like 2003, when I was 18. She got me the Alien Quadrilogy 9-disc boxed set that came with the four movies, both the theatrical and special edition/director's cut of each. But even better, it had five discs of extra content. Hours and hours and hours of behind the scenes, making of, commentary and interviews, and all kinds of just awesome little snippets of random stuff hidden in secret buttons littered throughout the menus. It was truly awesome. I'll have to dig that out and watch all that stuff again here soon!
I have that too! If you don't have the Prometheus collector's edition Blu-ray I'd highly recommend that as well. There's a MASSIVE documentary on the making of the film that's one of the best I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure it's almost 3 hours long and covers everything from concept art and storyboarding to post production, all shot inside the studios.
I could see Neill getting a little anxious to defend Aliens when Joe was ragging on it a little. I've actually always liked Aliens more than Alien, mostly because of the depth of the characters and Ripley's emotional story. I also think it's a richer film thematically with its maternal theme and Vietnam subtext. The Special Edition cut of the film is actually the better cut.

@@Zackaria_sMax I watched District 9 and I thought it was good up until the end where it felt like it discarded its interesting social commentary disguised as sci-fi strategy to become a big dumb action movie with lots of splosions. It wasn't a bad movie, but it let down my expectations I had from the first 2/3rds of the movie. Then I watched Elysium and it felt like it abandoned anything interesting to say to become a dumb action movie almost immediately. Chappie... I think I watched Redlettermedia's review and it just looked terrible. Like I said though, I'd rather watch a movie that tries to be something and fails than watch a movie that never aspired to be anything more than schlock in the first place. So listening to him talk about an Alien movie makes me wish he could have had the chance to make it, even though I might not have ended up liking it. Despite what I've said, I would sooner watch Chappie than the next Fast and the Furious.
@@WadeStar So your criticism of his work is that he made them action movies? I'm not saying you don't have the right to an opinion, you think what you think, but they were always marketed as exactly what they turned out to be, action sci-fi movies first, set against a backdrop that possibly makes some deeper statements about human nature. I guess I'm saying I don't understand your disappointment, they were exactly what it said on the box. (I agree Chappie was utterly terrible, couldn't finish it)
@@Ignitionite No. That would be absurd. But I do dislike when a good movie turns into a dumb action movie, or anything good degrades into something less good, regardless of the genre(s) in question. Next, District 9 wasn't marketed to me at all. I never saw a single trailer. It was entirely word of mouth and much of that praise focused on the more interesting first 2/3rds of the movie so I'm not alone in thinking that was the best part of the movie. I liked how it started, expected it to be one thing, it turned into something else at the end that I felt was less original, interesting, or compelling. The mechwarrior fight at the end felt contrived and it's very telling that no one who recommended the movie recommended it because of that part of the movie. After watching Elysium, my impression that this guy just wants to have a robot fight in all his movies cemented. Again, I don't dislike robot fights. I just want the robot fight to belong in the movie. I didn't feel like that belonged in District 9. "Because alien technology" wasn't a very good reason for me. Finally, Elysium was a dumb action movie. I felt it was sold to me as a smart action movie. It wasn't. You win again marketing! Anyway I felt he took the weakest aspect of District 9 and chose to make that his focus in Elysium rather than taking the best aspects of District 9 and developing those. I haven't watched any of his stuff since. But I'd give his next movie a shot after this interview. Now I'd like to help explain my disappointment despite what might be "on the box" or how something is marketed. Art speaks for itself. The intent of the artist, the marketing, etc. doesn't matter. It's the artwork itself that must stand on its own. Do you think we judge whether Shakespeare, DaVinci, or Michelangelo's art is good based on what was promised "on the box"? Of course you don't because that would be absurd. Here's a counter example: I went into The Dark Knight and The Witcher expecting very little. In fact, I expected The Witcher to be bad. But I liked it and I recommend it (not because it's cerebral, but because it's good, fun action with an unpretentious yet compelling story). So clearly expectations don't override whether I will like something or be disappointed in it. I can watch something with one expectation, have that expectation not be met, and still like it for what it is. I watched The Kid Detective thinking it was a comedy... I'd say it was even marketed as such, but I'd also say it was definitely *not* a comedy, but still an excellent movie. Not a good date night movie, as I found out the hard way. tl;dr Good art never disappoints, no matter what's on the box.
The thing about Aliens, being the masterpiece it is, it's just a mindless monster chasing you. That's why Scott's decision to explore the engineers is correct. That fossilized engineer in the first part just haunted the fuck out of people.
Alien (1979) is definitely in my top five. It is timeless from the dialog to the set everything fits given the context the viewer is presented within the movie. I absolutely love the scene Harry Dean Stanton (Brett) and Yaphet Kotto (Parker) are talking to where Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) about their share and the whole steam valve thing is them trying to mess with her. It's thing like this that really made me buy the whole 'merchant vessel' setup. I also had an opportunity to listen Yaphet speak once. It was really interesting. Would have loved to see Blomkamp's take.
My only problem with ALIENS was how much the xenomorphs were diminished just to be fodder for screams and muzzle flares. In the original they're more akin to Elderitch creatures, and had an insane regeneration capability. Even after Ripley fried it with the ships thrusters, it was hinted that it was possibly still alive, but now trapped in open space. Healing and going into a hibernation-comatose state, free to be rediscovered. I personally liked part 3, Lesser evil vs Greater evil premise and the fact that the Xenomorph was brought back to its menacing potential. I just wish Newt and Hicks survived. I'm also cool with the idea of that being a nightmare Ripley experienced when in deep sleep. Cameron turned them into Hedge Hogs you whacked with a club when they popped out. And THAT is why their mystique faded.
I really dont understand this take on aliens. The aliens absolutely destroyed the marines with tactics and ambushing. Yes obviously the destructive capability of humanity at this point would be ridiculous, so when these two things collide we get Aliens. It all makes perfect sense and fits nicely.
@@CrusaderLogan Because Aliens destroyed a great universe, with a shitty script, dialogue & unimaginative take on the alien The original alien showed how weak & fragile humanity actually is in the unknown expanse of space, Cameron's low IQ unimaginative take was literally an episode of the A team

Here lets see if I can break it down; Movie one - One creature; incredibly smart and rapidly heals when you hurt it. And you're trapped with it in space. Understand?.. its like fighting Cthulhu & Wolverine, only its a wild monster. Movie two - They're turned into Gremlins with steroids so some soldiers can go HOORAY!! and shoot off guns, as they dropped by the dozens. Xenomorphs shouldn't fall beneath Raptors in Jurassic Park, as monsters.
nah...they were all sci-fi ...horror is a matter of perspective, but there was no mystical or fantasy element to "Alien" ...unlike horror. ...And the ideas about military bio-weaponry and/or an optimally-efficient parasite aren't explored in movies like "Halloween" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"
Aliens had strong horror elements too. Action-adventure is something like Indiana Jones. As a kid, I was more scared by Aliens than Alien. The facehuggers etc. are fucking digusting to date, how it's not horror? Chestbursters, jump scares, all that. Just because Aliens is not the most hardcore horror by today's standards and has some shootouts, doesn't mean it's not mostly horror. More like action-horror, than action-adventure. Where as Alien was pure horror
@@shredd5705 I can agree with that. I approach it more from a Kurzweilian standpoint, largely from a standpoint of viewing the entire genre of horror as time-wasting bullshit. (And this comes from a person who nonetheless respects the bootstrapping cinematic achievements of Rob Zombie, John Carpenter, George Romero, and others like them.) I like the thoughts I have from considering the shell of the Alien to be carbon or diamondoid, and from considering it to be a bio-weapon, and to consider bioweapon programming to be an interesting concept, especially as a DNA-using parasite that can "adapt to any enemy that uses DNA" ...and thinking through some of the ways space travel was presented. ...I don't like the thoughts I have from thinking of the alien as "a monster that can't be dealt with rationally" ...in the model of other Hollywood monsters. For this reason, I somewhat like certain "sci-fi horror" but my appreciation of other sorts of "horror" has been diminished by rational reflection. ...If the protagonist can keep their wits about them, might that not be considered the optimal lens through which to view whatever is "horrific" in such a movie? Maybe just "sci fi" is appropriate, no matter how difficult the conflict presented, or how horrific the creatures under consideration appear to be. In real life, we're surrounded by political evil, and the evil is rather untenable (metaphorically horror-movie-like ..."Hellraiser" "Sin City" "Dawn of the Dead" "The Counselor"). ...But it's not actually supernatural, and increased intelligence always reveals at least a _possible_ path to victory (sci-fi-like..."Alien" "Terminator" "Aliens" "The Thing"). Sorry to nerd out on this one, but it's something I find entertaining to think about.

I know there are things in the _Alien_ franchise that will never be achieved like artificial gravity and speed beyond the speed of light, but unlike a lot of other space sci-fi, the _Alien_ franchise seemed fairly realistic.
@Jeff Johnson Sort of. Depends on how you talk about it. Artificial gravity can already be made by spinning an object. But I don't think that's what the OP meant. I think he probably meant some material that makes you stick to it, a la Star Trek. Deck plates and so on. That is definitely much farther away. As for light speed, moving an object through space at light speed or faster is seemingly impossible due to Einstein's law. Mass increases as you reach light speed etc....To say that it's "possible" would mean that Einstein's laws are not correct. Which itself is possible, but from what I've read and seen, modern advances in theoretical physics keep reinforcing his laws and further proving him correct. So it certainly seems like that's not going to happen. Therefore it is fairly reasonable to conclude that man made objects moving through space at faster than light speed is impossible. But, warping time and space (again a la Star Trek) to get somewhere fast than light would, is theoretically possible in a much more realistic way. Bending the very fabric of the universe to make two points closer is the more likely solution based on what science knows now.

Did Joe even watch 'Aliens'? Bumbling? Dietrich got snatched up by that sneaky boi in the wall causing her to torch Frost and ignite the bag of ammo. Wierzbowski probably got snatched up too as he's heard screaming alone in the distance. There is also the sneaky boi behind the door that got Burke. Not to mention the one that was hiding in the water and snatched Newt. Even the big ass queen sneaked into the dropship before they escaped. Far from bumbling. There is a huge difference with a single alien needing to keep itself in the shadows compared to an infestation of them working as a hivemind horde. Easy to kill? With the arms and equipment the marines had I would hope so. They went in with a purpose. The arms alone made all the difference. So much that Ripley was able to do the do without being trained as a soldier. The crew on the Nostromo didn't have that luxury and had no idea they would be facing such a predator. 'Alien' is a sci-fi horror. 'Aliens' is a sci-fi action adventure thriller. They're not even the same genre.

Full house with people allowed to stand in the aisles and fold up chairs between where ever.... Amazing the reaction of people who had never seen Alien. Even though it was edited to meet Korean censor regulations it still was scary as hell nonetheless.
I was 8 in 1986 and saw Aliens in the theater at an AMC. It was scary as hell, but also a lot of fun, at the same time. Those summers back in the 80's with all the smash hits had a magic that's been lost.

Alien is the best alien film by a trillion miles. Since Rogan likes the first one, someone needs to show him Alien Isolation. That game is so ridiculously faithful to the first movie Joe's mind will be blown. It's also the best horror game ever
Joe mentioned that seeing Aliens on Blu-ray in HD kinda ruined it, the actual film is higher "resolution" than Blu-ray so it would look even worse per se in the theaters. The big difference is you would see it maybe once or twice in the theater and never again. Home video lets us pause and scrutinize the frames. If it looks bad on Blu-ray or UHD, it looked just as bad in theaters.
I thought Neill Blomkamp was very respectful about David Fincher's 'Alien 3'. I still want to see Blomkamp's continuation of the survivors of Cameron's 'Aliens'.

Easy to kill? The marines were decimated fairly quickly by the Xenos Joe
Yeh they're easy to kill physically but they're cunning and can work in numbers.

@@Gfors85one of the key points is that the marines get tricked by the corporate guy into not being able to use their normal munitions claiming they were too close to the reactor.
they were easy to kill with the weapons the marines had but they had strength in numbers
Exactly!
Yeah, but its a dry heat!
yea, that and the fact that they are all soldiers trained to kill while in the first movie there where only seven of them and they were just a regular cargo ship crew so just one xenomorph was a handful
look into my eye.
Also no one had a gun in the first alien, so it’s hard to say they were “easier” to kill in the second.

I absolutely love the scene Harry Dean Stanton (Brett) and Yaphet Kotto (Parker) are talking to where Sigourney Weaver (Ripley)
about their share and the whole steam valve thing is them trying to mess with her.

1,3,4 and Prometheus are great. Need to rewatch the covenant though

The Parole officer scene in Elysium is one of the freakiest scenes in Sci fi because it seems like something that is going to be reality very soon
Aliens, hands down my favorite all time movie. I watch it like 4 times a year.
alien was horror; aliens was action-adventure. two totally different genres and beasts
nah...they were all sci-fi ...horror is a matter of perspective, but there was no mystical or fantasy element to "Alien" ...unlike horror. ...And the ideas about military bio-weaponry and/or an optimally-efficient parasite aren't explored in movies like "Halloween" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"
@@JakeWitmer Scifi horror. Not all horror has super natural elements, for example SAW.
@@shredd5705 I can agree with that. I approach it more from a Kurzweilian standpoint, largely from a standpoint of viewing the entire genre of horror as time-wasting bullshit. (And this comes from a person who nonetheless respects the bootstrapping cinematic achievements of Rob Zombie, John Carpenter, George Romero, and others like them.)
I like the thoughts I have from considering the shell of the Alien to be carbon or diamondoid, and from considering it to be a bio-weapon, and to consider bioweapon programming to be an interesting concept, especially as a DNA-using parasite that can "adapt to any enemy that uses DNA" ...and thinking through some of the ways space travel was presented.
...I don't like the thoughts I have from thinking of the alien as "a monster that can't be dealt with rationally" ...in the model of other Hollywood monsters.

Artificial gravity is possible just so costly its not being done
Where is there speed beyond the speed of light in the Alien franchise? I don’t think that’s a thing.

@@cine-mechanic8589 Yes, unfortunately:-( And gave us Covenant instead ?! I like Scott's work but only sick egomaniak or senile person can do this. I feel so sorry for Neil and for all of us - Alien fans.
@@cine-mechanic8589 He's more than diplomatic here.
He's also pretty modest admitting than Chappie might not helped here as well.
It was not really a good movie.
For sure not in comparison to his great debut.
It felt like it was done for Die Antwoord, so they can sit down and jerk off to it watching themselves on screen.
I am sure studio would rather go with Ridley's prequels idea anyway, even without him bitching about it.
What's sad they both kind of got f*cked.
Blomkamp's Alien was not even considered, but Convenant from what I know was far far away from Scott's initial idea for Prometheus' sequel (thanks to studio and unhappy Alien die hard fans).
Hopefuly one day he will be able to make his Alien flick.
I think the idea of sequel to Aliens, in which Ripley and Newt are both alive is great.
Cheers!
The fact blomkamp doesn't know who created alien tho is alarming. I mean newb ignorance level alarming. And he was gonna helm the franchise? Mnnnnn
probably what happened. Ridley probably went it's my way or the high way. which is stupid, they could have had Prometheus which is set in the past and also have the new Alien movie done by Blomkamp
“We’re on the Express Elevator going down!” that hair dryer sounding ship was bad ass…glad to see space pilots still wear aviators 😎

Fede Alvarez did a really good job, but now i need Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5!
Matte paintings are amazing and beautiful works of art!
Fun fact: Blade runner, alien and predator, was part of the same universe.
Blade runner???
That’s not true but okay
@@richardtyson100 Ridley Scott says that in a rare old interview 30 years ago.
@@richardtyson100 if u watch the sequel the SULACO is clear,y seen flying above the Las Vegas desert
@@richardtyson100 actually it is true. Scott referred to it in several, interviews. If u watch closely in the blade runner sequel the SULACO is clearly seen flying above the Las Vegas desert
Neill Blomkamp's Aliens time-line alteration, is a universe i've wanted to see for 20 years
Watching the characters interaction with each other in the original Alien movie always impressed me. They really act like theyre just at work and just doing a job which created a level of realism and immersiveness. I could almost see myself as part of that crew because it was so relatable as if id worked with that crew before many times. They dont really take the time for that level of character development anymore.
Ridley Scott didn’t create the exact art that led to alien, he just put the movie together and directed it, there could definitely be like 10 more movies
Ridley did not create Alien.
He was hired last minute as a director. The movie and lore was already done up until filming.
I was always bummed out this dude’s Alien never came about.
Did Joe even watch 'Aliens'?
Bumbling? Dietrich got snatched up by that sneaky boi in the wall causing her to torch Frost and ignite the bag of ammo. Wierzbowski probably got snatched up too as he's heard screaming alone in the distance. Who could forget the pack of sneaky bois in the ceiling, the one that sneaked around the marines to attack Ripley and Newt, and the one under the floor that got Hudson?
Agree
No he’s 100% correct. The aliens don’t seem NEARLY as deadly as the xeno from the first film.
@@vhscopyofseinfeldmost likely because they was fighting marines with space guns and grenades and special training compared to simple working people on a ship that woke from hyper sleep 🤣🤣🤣
@@vhscopyofseinfeldYeah because the soldiers had guns and all kinds of weapons the Nostromo crew didn’t. I mean what’s the point of just making the first film all over again?
I was so jacked to see this interview! Alien/s is my absolute favorite movies of all time!
You can hear how badly he wanted to direct an alien movie through his voice
I think Alien(1979) might be the greatest sci-fi thriller of all time
I watched Alien and Aliens in the movie theatre first run, and then years later when I was in South Korea I got to see Alien again after it was approved by the Korean censors. Full house with people allowed to stand in the aisles and fold up chairs between where ever.... Amazing the reaction of people who had never seen Alien. Even though it was edited to meet Korean censor regulations it still was scary as hell nonetheless.
I'm surprised to hear South Korea has such strict censors ... I guess your story is going back like 35 years or thereabouts ?
I was 8 in 1986 and saw Aliens in the theater at an AMC. It was scary as hell, but also a lot of fun, at the same time. Those summers back in the 80's with all the smash hits had a magic that's been lost.
Alien and Bladerunner are some of the best movies ever made period...Scott’s golden era of movies 🔥🔥
My dad used to take me to all these great double and triple features back in the day in San Francisco. Remember seeing Alien, The Thing (Carpenter), The Howling, sprinkled in with poorer B stuff like The Mausoleum, Motel Hell, etc. Those were the days.
Alien is the best alien film by a trillion miles. Since Rogan likes the first one, someone needs to show him Alien Isolation. That game is so ridiculously faithful to the first movie Joe's mind will be blown. It's also the best horror game ever
"It's Ridley's world." As soon as Cameron came on board, that became null and void.
I honestly think Alien 3 is underrated and doesnt get the respect it deserves as an "art film".
I didn't mind Alien 3 as a standalone film, was dissapointing what they did with the plot. And nobody hates Alien 3 more than David Fincher. Think he was fired and rehired from that film at least once due to studio/creative differences, he admitted he regrets making it nowdays
I still love matte paintings. I still love stop-motion effects. Need to keep using this stuff, just like practical effects, combined with CGI. Just adds layers of texture to everything.
His subtle style of show, don’t tell would work hauntingly well with Aliens.
I hope he gets the rights to make atleast an animation movie. Love Death And Robots has some sick animation episodes that look so real that Sigourney Weaver and Newt can be digitally edited to perfection. Sonnie's Edge from season 1 and Snow in the Dessert from season 2 are great examples.
Blomkamp on Love Death, bots would be amazing. Hes already got a knack for shorts.
The first Alien movie is a masterpiece. I've probably watched it ten times and it's still terrifying when I watch it alone at night.
Neill's films are always interesting. Dude is a visionary filmmaker.
Yeah and he got knighted basically by Peter fucking Jackson like what else do you want hollywood
For me, Blomkamp is the only person qualified to revisit Robocop, Terminator and Alien.
I saw Aliens in theater when it came out and it became my benchmark for future Sci-fi movies. It's pretty much perfect.
