I‘ve been playing guitar for like 27 years now and would love to learn the drums so badly these days. And let me Tell you, not only beautiful guitar sounds brings tears to my eyes but also every geniusly played instrument. As a musician from the bottom of my heart it is not hard to recognise if someone is a master in his discipline, no matter if it is the drums or whatever. But sure, the reverance of someone who is playing the same instrument is Even higher for sure :-)

I am a musician ,and it is by knowing the nuances ,and dynamics of all instruments ,and their players ( bandmates ,and others.)
While I dont disagree in theory..It is more believable if you are addressing non musicians ,average listener musicians ,your statement holds water.

Neil Peart wrote the introduction to Gavin Harrison's book "Rhythmic Composition: Featuring the Music of Porcupine Tree" from 2014. In the intro he is talking about listening to Gavin's music and says "Yes - if I could play like that, that is how I would play." Pretty high praise from The Professor.

Great that you found Gavin… here’s another drummer that is flying under the radar… Ben Shanbrom from the band Earthside. Ben has those Gavin-esque skills of dynamics, creativity and time feel. Try Drum Playthrough for the song “The Closest I’ve come”. Absolutely stunning 😮

This live album was the album that settled Porcupine Tree as my favorite band. And the solos and rhythms/breakdowns of Hatesong was just all that. Wilson's insanely brutal guitar solo with all its dissonance was one of those moments.

Gavin is just in a class of his own! Sublime to watch him play. Keep in mind that he turns 60 years old on the 28th May 2023! He looks maybe 40 if that. 😜🥁 I think he may be an alien. 😂 Awesome 👍👏👏👏👏😎

I love to see people as blown away by Gavin as I am. For more great stuff featuring Gavin, there are also these:
-- A video of ~40 seconds of Gavin, filmed by Steven Wilson when they're in the studio recording Gavin's first album with PT, 'In Absentia': th-cam.com/video/aT3f7nOVoRQ/w-d-xo.html
-- Gavin with The Pineapple Thief: 'Part Zero' (an older TPT song that Gavin completely owns when he plays it, as per usual: th-cam.com/video/P23XmtjWurQ/w-d-xo.html); 'Our Mire' (with Gavin being Gavin-y on a split-screen with drum cam: th-cam.com/video/Ylxs0xVvSDo/w-d-xo.html); 'The Final Thing on My Mind' (TPT live: th-cam.com/video/Eeq4HktLg2M/w-d-xo.html)
-- Gavin with with PT, live video: 'Way Out of Here' (th-cam.com/video/Uuj9XjwArAk/w-d-xo.html); 'The Sound of Muzak' (th-cam.com/video/CU8_ojgyXzc/w-d-xo.html); 'Fear of a Blank Planet' (th-cam.com/video/XDrKkuEgFG8/w-d-xo.html)
Another amazing drummer is Ray Hearne from Haken (who are releasing a new album, and will tour this year supporting it). Recommend '1985' (live: th-cam.com/video/LMQoJDWGBVs/w-d-xo.html; drum playthrough: th-cam.com/video/D6T8jRrW45Q/w-d-xo.html); 'The Endless Knot' (live: th-cam.com/video/PMzgh_1j838/w-d-xo.html; drum cam: th-cam.com/video/Oc2Jr-_ue1Q/w-d-xo.html); 'Nightingale' (from the new album, drum playthrough: th-cam.com/video/R3UBFN5tkb8/w-d-xo.html); 'Earthrise' (drum playthrough: th-cam.com/video/F8hb_c1HIeo/w-d-xo.html). Tons more great Haken videos available ...

This song, along with the rest of this incredible dvd ('Arriving Somewhere...' live in Chicago) is what helped me see the wonder and excitement of the drums. Gavin's work is really a gift for music enthusiasts. Others have rec'd 'Way Out of Here' live, which is awesome. I'd add 'Halo', 'Cheating the Polygraph', 'Start of Something Beautiful'--really any live PT stuff w/ Gavin will be rewarding.

I don't play drums and yet I fully recognize Gavin Harrison's brilliance. Been listening to Alan White, Bill Bruford, etc., from the late 1960s, early 1970s. The drummers that Wilson has used in his solo act are pretty decent too.
Gavin shone in In Absentia but it was really Fear of a Blank Planet where Wilson crafted songs to highlight Gavin's percussion skills. And yet none of the songs sound like Gavin is 'showing' off.

This is music at the highest level! I never analysed the lyrics of this song but as far as I understand it's about all the emotions you go through when you're angry and full of hate towards something/someone. That's why the guitar solo midsong sounds so weird because it's supposed to put the uncontrolled emotions into music. Steven Wilson might actually be the best modern songwriter for this kind of emotional songs and Gavin only adds into the theme of this song with all his weird little fills again bringing out these sparks of emotions. He perfectly plays some of the fills to sound unfinished or as if they broke off to show (I think) again the state of not being able to control what you do and think when you are incredibly angry and full of hate. Perfect music and probably my favorite Gavin Harrison performance🔥🔥

It is quite a fact that every band where Gavin steps in gets elevated to a whole new level. Listen to Porcupine Tree before and when Gavin have stepped in. Do the same with The Pineapple Thief and King Crimson and you immediately notice a huge difference. Gavin's musical influence, apart from his massive drum skills, is of invaluable importance for those bands. I almost want to say that everything Gavin touches, turns to gold (how cliché, I know!)
