    Gavin Harrison is a monster drummer.

    Great stuff! The other guy is John Wesley. He covered rhythm/lead guitar and backup vocals for them on several tours. For some reason, on Hate Song, he just provided backing vocals. I guess Steve had it covered guitar-wise.

      Yeah those 3 solos he had didn't need any help. ;)

    Love this version of the song - so tight as a band and Gavin is basically showing off all his tricks.

    Thanks to Matt, now I'm getting me some Porcupine Tree! Never heard of them, but love it, one of the reasons I don't understand the whole blocking thing.

      He has 5 more PT and SW songs coming! PT was how I found Steven Wilson. Popped up on my Rush Pandora station back in 2009. Since then, his music has dominated a lot my listening time. Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No Man, and his solo stuff....all great music. His collab work with opeth and others is also great.

    That is John Wesley, great guitarist, friend of Neil and had to play Lifeson’s Anesthetise solo in front of his hero Alex

      And played it better in my humble opinion. Love Alex obviously but not as smooth a flow in Alex's playing as John brings to his.

    I think this is the oldest PT song you've reacted to, Justin, although it's actually the starting point of the nu-metal phase they would spend the next several albums exploring. IMO Stupid Dream (and its predecessor Signify) are their peak, but I'm in the minority.

      One of my favorites is Lightbulb Sun which this song if from. I know a lot of people don't think it is that good but it just has a calming vibe for me.

      Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are my favorite PT albums. Partly nostalgia maybe because it's when I discovered them, but I love the mix of influences on them.

    Hello from Brasil! I highly recommend the video for the song "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here" from the DVD of the same name!

    Yes, that is a PRS. He played those a lot until recently when he moved to Tele. Still brings out the PRS for heavier songs. The other guy is John Wesley who was the touring backup guitarist and singer. You will see a lot more of him in my other request.
    What I find funny is SW thinks he is not a great guitar player but songs like this prove otherwise. I don't need 3000 notes per second. I need melody and he brings that all the time.
    My son has an octave pedal but hasn't used it yet. Don't think The Real Book has many songs that need it. lol

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it actually took me awhile before I got into effects on bass. Definitely dependent on the gig or specific song. An octave pedal (BOSS OC2 specifically) is a must have though.

    • @mpkelley20
      @mpkelley20 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinPanariello I think he bought the TC Electronics Nether Octave pedal as it was cheaper. He did it on his own so Iwas not aware when he got it.
      The Boss OC2 is only available used. the OC5 seems to be the new model. Probably similar.

      OC2 ! is the way to go. So clutch I have two of em.

    Fantastic!.... other singer is also the other guitarist. Either he just doesn't play guitar on this or they simply didn't catch any of his performance on this song ( except for singing ).

      @@JustinPanariello you didn't say that you quoted the guy who requested the song

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  ปีที่แล้ว

      this is not that new a video... i don't remember what I said. I'm sure whatever I said, is what I meant to say. I imagine if I said it was not the greatest song but a great performance... i meant its not the greatest song, but the performance was really great. Both things can be true at the same time. But again, older video i'm not immediately rewatched to grab the context of what you are pointing out.

      @@pointlessmanatee ooohhh im sorry I miss read what you said I didnt say that, the requestor said it 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ my bad. Yeah idk lol i suppose it means what i thought it would mean if i said it. Idk. Cant speak for the person.

    unpopular opinion (speaking as a drummer):
    Gavin is the most instrumentally proficient member of PT
    Gavin is the least musical member of PT
    Just pay attention to how little his sequence of drumming techniques blends in with the music. He's using the band as a background for a drum clinic.
    He doesn't do this all the time, but this isn't the only song he does this. Just lambasting all over the piece. Again, you should only expect this kind of performance with a drum clinic, or actual fusion bands that are basically multi instrumental clinics on how to rip on instruments.
    For rock, even prog rock, though? Not a fan
