Rick Davies plays the keys, and has the gravely voice. Roger Hodgson plays guitar, some keys as well, and has the higher pitched voice. They were a great collaborative songwriting duo, especially on this album.
I remember seeming Supertramp preform this song in concert, great visual on big screen on a train track as it went faster and faster around the mountain side. Best concert ever!
Certainly underrated early on. “Breakfast In America” was quadruple platinum, was #1 on the charts for 6 weeks, spawned 4 hit singles and won 2 Grammys and was nominated for two more. Some say it leaned far more commercial than previous albums, but who’s to say? It got an incredible amount of airplay, many say overplayed to which I would agree. But then, I listened to it non-stop for weeks after getting the album and seeing them live during the tour.
They have so many great songs I can't even pick a favorite. It ends up the one I'm listening to at the time. Crisis what Crisis and Even in the Quietest Moment are just as good. You won't regret the time spent listening to them. Me and my gf love you two ! !
When you're done with this record you need to go back and hear it from beginning to end. It's so much better hearing the puzzle pieces all put together.

Rudy is one of Supertramp's finest songs. I bought this album on cassette shortly after it came out (in 1974), in 1975. Cassette because I was sick of the clicking of dust on my vinyl albums. Now I have it on CD. I ripped it straight onto iTunes and have never played it since (except for via my iPod or iPhone). The end of the track is so sad...
I bought a lot of cassettes in the 70's and 80's, I've had to throw a lot away as they were knackered. I've replaced some of them on CD'S, but fortunately I bought Crime on vinyl, l can put up with a bit of 'crackling' on my vinyls, it adds a bit of authenticity! 😄

Also saw Roger Hodgson with a full symphony orchestra. They are one of the most underrated bands of their generation. I really love your reaction videos.❤
What a great pick and this song is one of my favorites. Crime of the Century is an exceptional well put together album with such a unique sound and composition. Breakfast in America 🇺🇸 which was a big hit in America in 1979 also features winners such as LOGICAL SONG, TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME and GOODBYE STRANGER. Glad you guys appreciate the group.
Supertramp's Crime of the Century made Pink Floyd take their Dark Side of the Moon back in the recording studio for a redo and made the Eagles take two years off to cut Hotel California.
@@SightAfterDark You still haven't listened to the album. If you are listening through headphones, you still haven't listened. Supertramp got discovered in stores selling high end stereo equipment. The quality of the equipment during that time and the quality of CRIME OF THE CENTURY was a match made in heaven.

The album Crime of the Century is magnificent music , and the audio quality is on the borderline of a " reference HIFI album". I have the vinyl and the CD versions of this album and one time in 2012 I used a CD of this album when I went to a high end HiFi store to buy new high end HiFi equipment, everyone was amazed by the fantastic songs and the audio quality of an old 70's recording..
Was your stero good enough to hear all those whistles and vibe slaps hidden within the piano interlude of the opening song "School." School and Rudy didn't repeat in verses and choruses.
For whatever reason, I like to listen to this song when I'm real drunk. There is something I really relate to. They were one of my favorite bands in high school and this is my favorite song of theirs (along with "Another nervous breakdown" and "Crime of the Century", and Child of Vision", the entire second half of which is a total synth jam.) Ray Davies was an underrated master, for sure. "School" was basically the soundtrack to my high school days. They were huge with my friends too. I wish I could have seen them but they didn't tour like the other mega bands of the late seventies and early eighties. I graduated high school in 1979.
Beautiful reaction. It's like what we felt when we heard it for the first time! Sifa said something about the Grease musical in a previous song. When I listen back I hear what you're saying, but it didn't have that ugly stamp when this album was released mid 70s.
Thanks for the reaction you two! Glad you are enjoying this album as much as I did so many long years ago! The other song you are thinking of, Dan, with the long intro is Bloody Well Right. I enjoy how you guys think about songs in thematic terms, and I particularly love how you delve into the concepts and ideas that the composers are wielding in each song. Someone few people cover, but who wrote most of Pink Floyd's most famous music, is Roger Waters. Since Dark Side of the Moon he has only done either concept albums or rock operas, so they are best heard in totality. But if you want to hear someone going deep into composition, and who's taking production leaps like Magical Mystery Tour did--where it's hard to tell production from song from musician--you may want to consider What God Wants Parts 1 and 2 from Amused to Death, or maybe Gunner's Dream from The Final Cut, his last album with Pink Floyd, (they've said they were mostly session musicians on his solo album--his Dad died in WWII and that whole album is about that). Like this song, that's very layered and deep stuff done with excellence. If you could cover some of his stuff that would be great. And he sounds just as good live, so doing some of those too would allow you to see the musicianship --because he's famous for having super talented people (like Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, etc.) with him.
Thanks so much! We appreciate your comments! We LOVE Pink Floyd and Roger Waters! Roger was actually the first concert Dan ever went to! Not sure there’s much music from them we haven’t heard already
Supertramp was underrated until the 1977 hit, "Give a Little Bit" from their album, 'Even in the Quietest Moments.' They were such a talented group of 5 musicians that did have their peak in 1979-80 with the #1 album, 'Breakfast in America' and the next year's double live album, 'Paris' (which, IMHO, is one of the best live rock records)!
Hi guys - I bought this album (as so many of your choices!) when it came out. It was the album that really broke them, at least in the UK. Can't speak for the US. It was huge for a while, though my memory is that they really didn't cash in on it - you barely saw them on TV music shows, for example. I think there were a couple of singles off the album that did well but then they released a couple of albums that didn't do so well, until Breakfast in America came out in '79 and scored several singles. Although I liked this album and most of the songs, I always thought they were a little 'thin' on substance, and aimed for a grandeur that their electric pianos couldn't quite give them ... compare them to Pink Floyd, for example, who have a wider canvas and more depth. Nice to see you exploring these avenues! Can I suggest you look at John Martyn's albums? Particularly Solid Air, 1973, and the track I'd rather be the Devil ... astonishing guitar work.
Supertramp was being financed by SAM which are the initials for a wealthy sponsor. They dedicated the album to him. The group members would reinvest in Supertramp by offering what seemed to be a few ticket give-aways and then giving away as much as half the tickets. Shrewd fellows.
The whole album is a masterpiece. If you check wikipedia i believe it took 6 months to make this album. Listen to how it's layered and put together and you can see why. Still have the vinyl album and its gorgeous 👍😁
Supertramp wrote its message across the stars years before Star Wars did. Rudy has a climax and then a paradoxical ending. Rudolph Valentino the tragic silent movie heart throb that women loved perhaps? Rudy leads into Roger Hodgson's. Pre-ending song If Everyone was Listening. That song ends dramatically leadung into the apocalyptic Crime of the Century.
They were huge in Buffalo New York and Minneapolis Minnesota That's the first two US cities were there broke... BIG They always thanked Buffalo.. for the fact that they were huge in 🦬🦬🦬..
I bought this album when it was released in 1975. I was 19; ingesting lots of "certain substances". It influenced my outlook on life, and remains one of my favourite albums to this day. peace - out...from an ancient Australian
The live version isn't necessarily better, but has a different energy to it....worth a listen...my favorite Supertramp song...Rudy represents all of us, at some time in life, who hasn't felt " the whole world's above him", etc. Add the usual superior musicianship and production to the great lyrics...masterpiece, at least Yes, keyboards are their feature, lead instruments, guitar and sax work in conjunction with the keys...and their bass player is artful too
I would have pieced together a Playlist of all the Crime songs from Paris. The next song, If Everyone Was Listening, is the only one they didn't include.
You guys should be blown away by this song. Forget the mish-mash of of samplings that music brings in your minds. It is the insane story that is actually a true story. Supertramp is a band that where the main song writer is actually aware that his material is messianic. You know in the Logical song when he says": 'The question runs so deep for such a simple man !!!'. That man is me. I am the Druid Dude by 'Mind Games" by John Lennon. I am thew NoWhere Man. If you want to hear another so called underrated band from UK out at the same time as Supertramp then you have to listen to BeBop Deluxe and start with the album Sunburst Finish, and listen to Fair Exchange and get blown away. The lead guitarist Bill Nelson is one the greatest to come out of the 70s UK Era.
People keep saying they are underrated. They sold millions and millions albums and toured the world. Not sure who is underrating them. I guess it is people who don’t know their catalog. They are certainly well regarded in Prog Rock circles. I was fortunate to have seen them in concert in 1979 on the Breakfast in America tour. I was 18. They were magnificent. Crime of the Century had so many feels, changes and progressions. They did nearly the entire record. Breakfast in America was a pop masterpiece cloaking dark, sad and difficult themes in blissful pop melodies. They played all of it. Your comment about bridging the 70s and 80s was interesting. They definitely have 60s influences as well. Their first album came out in 1970.
Early '70's, the golden era of ROCK! COTC came out in '74. Dark Side Of The Moon, '73. AND The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, '72. These are some of the greatest albums EVER!! Dark Side and Ziggy should be your next 2 albums to listen to. You will not be disappointed. BTW, WHERE IS RUSH????!!!!!????
@@SightAfterDark Awesome. So, then, if you haven't listened to one of the other greatest albums of all time, as well as being truly one of the most innovative, particularly for it's time, then "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" must be put on your short list. I mean c'mon, David Bowie?! I will say, much like COTC, it really should be heard in it's entirety. Random song selections really don't do this album justice, IMO. I don't think you'll be disappointed. 😎
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A little Night Music by Mozart) in the background 🙂. Supertramp definitely do not confine themselves to two guitars, a bass and drums.
"Rudy" Rudy's on a train to nowhere, halfway down the line He don't wanna get there, but he needs time He ain't sophisticated, nor well-educated After all the hours he wasted, still he needs time. He needs time - he needs time for livin', He needs time - for someone just to see him. He ain't had no lovin' For no reason or rhyme And the whole world's above him. Well it's not as though he's fat- No there's more to this than that- See he tries to play it cool- Wouldn't be nobodys fool. Rudy thought that all good things comes to those that wait But recently he could see that it may come too late. All through your life, all through the years Nobody loved, nobody cared. So dim the light, dark are your fears Try as I might, I can't hold back the tears How can you live without love, it's not fair? Someone said give but I just didn't dare. What good advice are you waiting to hear? Hearing's alright for them that's all there You'd better gain control now You'd better show'em all now You'd better make or break now You'd better give and take now You'll have to push and shove now You'll have to find some love now You'd better gain control now. Now he's just come out the movie. Numb of all the pain, Sad but in a while he'll soon be back on his train ,,, [my father committed AT THE AGE OF 88 last summer OD since he had no exit strategy after been sick for over 5 debilitating years of his life. He looked like refugee from a concentration camp. Fuck you modern retarded medical science ,,,, THOUGH HIS LIFE HAD BEEN HARSH HE WAS ALWAYS A TRUE GENTLEMAN.
I love Roger, this song Rudy is a Rick Davies composition, Rick was just as much as important as Roger. Bob John and Dugie were polished musicians that added to the group. They truly were a band on the Album.
Rick Davies wrote this song and so many fantastic songs The fact is that since Roger started solo efforts he had zero hits and poor album sales. Without Supertramp he was not the same.
one of those absolutely awkward songs to try dancing to in high school.... starts out all waltzy..... then you gotta let go and do the rocky white guy 2-step overbite groove.... then just stand there wondering what to do during that dead slow "are those footsteps and car noises?" part.... then look at each other and agree we're waltzin to violins for the end. Roger Hodgson's piano playing made them standout from the other 70's arena superbands...... they always put in some space-y synth because everyone loved Star Wars back then. Rudy might be my favourite song off this album now..... just don't tell that kid I abused for liking Dreamer better ok?
@@eidetecker ha ha ha I knew someone was gonna call me out on that.... but you knew what I meant.... we were all Star Wars-y before that movie even came out... Rocket Man, Space Oddity, ELO and Boston album covers..... the whole 70's was half synthy space music, right? maybe I shoulda said 2001 A Space Odyssey instead.
@@JuandeFucaU Yeah, we were all children of the moon landing of 1969. We were imprinted with space-like themes for sure. Rush's '2112' comes to mind. Synthesizers and space, can't go wrong with all that.
Magical tune. The only thing with Supertramp is that I feel that the songs are a bit too short, me being lot into progressive rock. They build up to a crescendo but drop it just before the climax is reached, before the release of the final note. (Else in the title track where they hit that releasing note at the end). For me personally each if their sings could have been stretched out maybe 25% longer. Like Pink Floyd all albums or Genesis album from 1970-1977. But that’s me. Supertramp is still on my top5 list of bands (i do not have any #1-the top 5 are all #1)
I expect the US was the last native English-speaking country to really figure out Supertramp. Doesn’t much matter now, but I wonder why it worked out that way. Was it just exposure?
Just waiting for you guys to get to Breakfast in America. I don't believe any albums come without filler, but that one has at least 5 stellar songs on it. Rudy is OK, but not their top notch stuff.
Musically it is just flexing styling muscles...I don't even know what the song is about..it is dis-jointed..strings sweetener at the end...starts with grand piano..and then extends across the keyboard to a more popular folk piano...
Dan, just bobbing your head with the rhythm, just to follow the direction of the song, even yawning, does not give a good impression of what you are experiencing. It really makes this video hard to swallow. Then when the song is over, you tell us you so enjoyed this track? Your bodylanguage fills up 90% of the video. Are you aware? A thumbs down from me, I'm sorry to say.
Truly one of the greatest albums ever recorded!!!👍👌✌😎

the lyrics, the entire story of this song...

Interesting comparison between them and Floyd! Thanks for your perspective Keith!
Supertramp was being financed by SAM which are the initials for a wealthy sponsor. They dedicated the album to him. The group members would reinvest in Supertramp by offering what seemed to be a few ticket give-aways and then giving away as much as half the tickets. Shrewd fellows.
Supertramp is like throwing 5 different cans of paint against a wall and dissecting the results.
Ahhh the good ole Jackson Pollock method
Sifa... !!! Great!
WUNDERBAR!!!
Thanks Michael!
ENJOI.... Thanks rockOn! L.O.V.E
The whole album is a masterpiece. If you check wikipedia i believe it took 6 months to make this album. Listen to how it's layered and put together and you can see why. Still have the vinyl album and its gorgeous 👍😁
Gorgeous indeed! Thanks for watching Ian!
Well said
They were underrated in the states
But not here in Canada 🇨🇦
They were huge in Buffalo New York and Minneapolis Minnesota That's the first two US cities were there broke... BIG They always thanked Buffalo.. for the fact that they were huge in 🦬🦬🦬..
I bought this album when it was released in 1975. I was 19; ingesting lots of "certain substances". It influenced my outlook on life, and remains one of my favourite albums to this day.
peace - out...from an ancient Australian
It was released in 1974. 'Crisis? What Crisis?' was released in 1975
The live version isn't necessarily better, but has a different energy to it....worth a listen...my favorite Supertramp song...Rudy represents all of us, at some time in life, who hasn't felt " the whole world's above him", etc. Add the usual superior musicianship and production to the great lyrics...masterpiece, at least
Yes, keyboards are their feature, lead instruments, guitar and sax work in conjunction with the keys...and their bass player is artful too
The cool thing about the live version is that video they show. It’s captivating!
I would have pieced together a Playlist of all the Crime songs from Paris. The next song, If Everyone Was Listening, is the only one they didn't include.
Thanks Michael!
You guys should be blown away by this song. Forget the mish-mash of of samplings that music brings in your minds. It is the insane story that is actually a true story. Supertramp is a band that where the main song writer is actually aware that his material is messianic. One of my favs on this album. Waiting in anticipation…
Soon!
you guys NEED toooo see the live vid
Didn’t know there was one!
its the live in Paris album
If you want to hear another so called underrated band from UK out at the same time as Supertramp then you have to listen to BeBop Deluxe and start with the album Sunburst Finish, and listen to Fair Exchange and get blown away. The lead guitarist Bill Nelson is one the greatest to come out of the 70s UK Era.
Thanks!
When you feel just like Rudy, you realy need a train to leave you somewhere, not nowhere...What's the train?!..
Kind of makes me think of a rock opera like Tommy, as well.
Great pick!
Thanks Kyle! Shoutout to the Patrons!
Groove-y
Absolutely
They are definitely great!
they were underrated until breakfast in America.. before that they played small venues in the USA... After that they were huge.
Haha we’ve heard Dark Side so many times it would be hard to count. But you’re right, this was definitely a golden era!
The VIOLINS...
Did you two ever remarked, that their's no disliked-marks on your sight!
☺️not all the time
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A little Night Music by Mozart) in the background 🙂. Supertramp definitely do not confine themselves to two guitars, a bass and drums.
Did they pick -up where the Beatles left off ?
"Rudy"
Rudy's on a train to nowhere, halfway down the line
He don't wanna get there, but he needs time
He ain't sophisticated, nor well-educated
After all the hours he wasted, still he needs time.
He needs time - he needs time for livin',
He needs time - for someone just to see him.
He ain't had no lovin'
For no reason or rhyme
And the whole world's above him.
Well it's not as though he's fat-
No there's more to this than that-
See he tries to play it cool-
Wouldn't be nobodys fool.
Rudy thought that all good things comes to those that wait
But recently he could see that it may come too late.
All through your life, all through the years
Nobody loved, nobody cared.
So dim the light, dark are your fears
Try as I might, I can't hold back the tears
How can you live without love, it's not fair?
Someone said give but I just didn't dare.
What good advice are you waiting to hear?
Hearing's alright for them that's all there
You'd better gain control now
You'd better show'em all now
You'd better make or break now
You'd better give and take now
You'll have to push and shove now
You'll have to find some love now
You'd better gain control now.
Now he's just come out the movie.
Numb of all the pain,
Sad but in a while he'll soon be
back on his train ,,, [my father committed AT THE AGE OF 88 last summer OD since he had no exit strategy after been sick for over 5 debilitating years of his life. He looked like refugee from a concentration camp. Fuck you modern retarded medical science ,,,, THOUGH HIS LIFE HAD BEEN HARSH HE WAS ALWAYS A TRUE GENTLEMAN.
Oh cool, thanks Digital Talk!
Sifa!
Roger Hodgson is the mastermind behind Supertramp ; a well respected name.
Another fabulous reaction!! Thanks!
I love Roger, this song Rudy is a Rick Davies composition, Rick was just as much as important as Roger. Bob John and Dugie were polished musicians that added to the group. They truly were a band on the Album.
Glad you enjoyed!
@@SightAfterDark Always ❤
Rick Davies wrote this song and so many fantastic songs
The fact is that since Roger started solo efforts he had zero hits and poor album sales.
Without Supertramp he was not the same.
Interesting thing is that almost all the things you say it reminds you of, are things that were recording years after this album.
Goes to show their influence!
one of those absolutely awkward songs to try dancing to in high school.... starts out all waltzy..... then you gotta let go and do the rocky white guy 2-step overbite groove....
then just stand there wondering what to do during that dead slow "are those footsteps and car noises?" part.... then look at each other and agree we're waltzin to violins for the end.
Roger Hodgson's piano playing made them standout from the other 70's arena superbands...... they always put in some space-y synth because everyone loved Star Wars back then.
Rudy might be my favourite song off this album now..... just don't tell that kid I abused for liking Dreamer better ok?
This album precedes 'Star Wars' by three years, mate.
@@eidetecker ha ha ha I knew someone was gonna call me out on that.... but you knew what I meant....
we were all Star Wars-y before that movie even came out... Rocket Man, Space Oddity, ELO and Boston album covers.....
the whole 70's was half synthy space music, right?
maybe I shoulda said 2001 A Space Odyssey instead.
gonna call myself out for the ELO and Boston covers being after this song too.... before someone beats me to it.
and Space Oddity was 60's... sheesh.
@@JuandeFucaU Yeah, we were all children of the moon landing of 1969. We were imprinted with space-like themes for sure. Rush's '2112' comes to mind. Synthesizers and space, can't go wrong with all that.
Funny… these people discovering this music now.
That’s how music works! Thanks for watching!
Good reactions. Try "Even in the Quietest Moments".
Yes!
Thanks Don!
DAN: stop yawning
It was a long day!
@@SightAfterDark OK!
@@SightAfterDark I'm sorry
I love you Dan!
We love you too!!
Hey, Saxophone!
Could be!
"Epic"....Couldn't think of a more apt decription of the song...
For real! Thanks for watching!
Way ahead of its time in 1975
Just waiting for you guys to get to Breakfast in America. I don't believe any albums come without filler, but that one has at least 5 stellar songs on it. Rudy is OK, but not their top notch stuff.
Respectfully disagree re: Rudy. And I prefer the next Supertramp album - Even in the Quietest Moments - over Breakfast in America.
Interesting. Thanks for your perspective!
@@hklinker well taste is subjective, so no one is wrong. But OMG, Breakfast has my absolute favorite material by ST by far.
Was that the first Supertramp album you listened to…a lot? I sometimes think that matters in the way musical memories are made.
@@hklinker No, I listened to each one as they came out. It's a popular opinion by the way.
