I actually knew the train announcer. He worked at Paddington in the summer holidays (he was a bit of a train geek)..sadly he passed away a couple of years ago. Great song

Have you realised that this descending motif on the piano you enjoy, that is repeated by the strings at the end of the song, is a representation of the train's wheels? "Back on his train..." *strings in descending motif*
I love Rudy. Truly one of Supertramp's most overlooked songs. But my own favourite of theirs is coming your way. Crime Of The Century (song) is a masterpiece.

This album is greater than the sum of its parts
Now that you’ve almost pieced it all together I can tell you’re starting to see that
This is why this is such a highly regarded work and a complete straight thru album listen , following the story from start to finish should help to draw that conclusion
Alan Parsons Project ‘ I Robot ‘ is very similar - you’ll enjoy most of the pieces but you’ll probably love ‘ the album listen ‘ afterwards as you see it all come together when done together in order
    Enjoy

Rudy knows that he needs to be....something substantial ...yet doesn't want to do it wrong be insignificantly. He wants to strike it true get it grand as he feels he deserves it to be...
Then when he better gain controll now. He feels like he's waited too long to try to get it just right.
He feels his time is finite..that he has to do something now.
Won't that be wonderful...to finally get it down " I'm substantial I've got it now it's comming into stride there's motion of substinance.. 🎼🎶that's real good I'm worthwhile I've got substanance its a gravitas momentous opus of life affirming drive and worthiness to humanity. I've made it now.
He's self satisfied 😌 the endorphins are settling in to his life affirming self worth.
It's sad bur after this inner thought process 😔 he will realize that it was all just mental fluff & he will be soon..
Back on his train....going nowhere really but he must get there but where..but where...but where..........???😞😞😞

The Call and Response between the two leaders of Supertramp was wonderful. One of my favorite Rick Davies songs... along with the title track, Crime Of The Century.
I saw this played in my first ever concert... the Breakfast In America tour... and Rudy was a highlight. They had a huge screen in the background and played this film of a moving train... just amazing paired with the music.
There's some amazing stuff to check out with Crisis What Crisis (Soapbox Opera, Easy Does It / Sister Moonshine (react to them together!), The Meaning...
AND with Even In The Quietest Moments ("Give A Little Bit," "Babaji," "Even In The Quietest Moments," and, of course, "Fool's Overture."

Love how the guitar work does not try to dominate - it all contributes to the song itself. Very tasteful. Those strings just bring a lot of class... add some funk for fun in the middle. They are under-rated. Love how you bring this great music forward that might be passed by. Thanks for your good cheer and intelligent analysis.

So happy for you JP for getting to hear all this great music, and we get to share the experience. Supertramp was a popular band, but IMO deserved to be even more so based on their amazing progressive compositions, and in such an economical musical way, Nothing is superfluous, every sound has its place. And put together in such an approachable melodic way. Crime of the Century is perhaps their greatest album from start to finish, but Crisis What Crisis? is worth going through too.

Ever noticed diving into the late 60's and 70's is like a never ending treasure chest.... wouldn't it be nice if society of today took note and evolved back to those times where creativity and the higher minded faculties had a high stake in the essence and virtue of the end product.... not just $$ and the mind control symbolism of today's gunk.

In concert, projected on a screen at the back of the stage, there would be a movie (from the conductor's point of view) of a train barrelling down the tracks (during the long interlude near the end) and end at the string build up as it came into a station.

My favorite Supertramp song, I feel it is about me. I've had times in life where I've felt " the whole world is above me ", and I'm " on a train to nowhere", and" need more time". And I know what to do, but procrastinate and hide( the reference to coming out of a movie at the end). And, as usual, the great production/arrangement/musicianship Supertramp always has. Masterpiece, but, the whole album is

Hey, Michael. This is the one I relate to the most too, especially now that I'm in my 50s and am "halfway down the line."

Knew that would be the track that would probably jump ahead of School for you ( no knock at all on School of course )
Crime of the Century is a concept album and you’ve now been introduced to its protagonist - Rudy The story , the journey is his
Knowing this - when you go back and listen to Crime in its entirety ( I know you will at some point ) you’ll get even more out of experiencing the musical narrative of each of the ‘ chapters’
The title track is also outstanding and If Everyone Was Listening should be an enjoyable listen for you as well - then you can go back , listen to all of it in order and ........ do Crime as an album review

Glad you liked Rudy. For me, it is one of those Supertramp songs that tells a wonderful story and sets a dramatic atmosphere. The sound effects of the train station sounds sets a cinematic tone. When I first heard it almost 30 years ago when I was re discovering Supertramp during my college days, I imagined scenes from old Hollywood movies. Very vagabond to me. Rick Davies' song arrangement on this is so telling of how he weaves stories through his music. Still blows me away to this day!

When they performed this in concert, they would show a sped-up film of a train journey (from London to Brighton, maybe?) during the “travel” section starting at the station announcements around 3:30 in the song (4:45 of your video) and ending at the big buildup near the end. Really added to the overall atmosphere of the song.

To me, these two songs, Rudy and Crime of the Century, are almost equal in terme of musicality. To get the full effect, you need to listen the album from start to finish. Yeah, people seldom mention his guitar work. Really obvious and obviously good on Bloody Well Right. As a kid (and a piano player) I was always keeping an ear out for bands or artists that combined good piano and guitar playing. Supertramp and Elton John had that. Billy Joel at times, but it was often one or the other in his songs. Big Shot is an exception.

Just a classic album. One of my favorites, especially Rudy. Boys and girls, this is what you get when you have freedom of expression and my generation bequeaths this catalogue of music to you. Now, it's up to you to create a new era of peace, with incentive to create something of value, like this song. Good luck and I hope my pension and the whole system doesn't go out like a light bulb. Actually, that would be better than trans-humanism.

Rudy is one of their most progressive song in one way. I do not know what to say, everything is so perfect on this song. The build up on side B of this LP with Dreamer, Rudy, If Everyone Was Listening and the final song Crime of the Century is to be listen to in a sweep with your headphones on and a drink of choice in your hand. You noticed the drummer Bob C. Benberg (or his real name Bob Siebenberg). You will notice more of Bob C. Benbergs very tasteful drumming in Crime of the Century. One thing to talk about is that Supertramp’s core members stayed together for a very long time, even after Roger Hodgson left the group in 1984 I think it was.

If anyone ever wonders if Superttramp has some Prog in them this is a fine example to prove they definitely do. It's amazing how many songs/changes happen in this masterpiece, yet Supertramp transitions equally or better than anyone out there. It's so well done that it really does come across as one song which is the best kind of prog, not forced jarring inserted change-ups but overlapping subtle turns that never shock you out of the journey. Sublime!

Rudy spoke to the angst felt by so many of us as teenagers in the 70's in the changing UK (and elsewhere) after the oil crisis. The song builds with so many layers and each listening brings out something not heard before. Truly magnificent live.

I have been listening to this album since it first came out nearly 46 years ago. As much as I love Rudy, I can't say I ever separated a track out and called one better than the other. I still listen to the album the same way I did in those earlier times, start of finish. The feeling I get as the mournful Crime of the Century fades is I have just ended an incredible journey. Only some albums can achieve this and this is perhaps why so many love this album.

I could not agree more. Still all these years later, one of my favourite albums. From start to finish, it needs to be listened; and it leaves my feeling strangely drained, but glad.

Justin, I’m really glad you liked RUDY. I loved the guitar work on this song. The guitar on the song CRIME OF THE CENTURY is one of my favorite of ANY song!

Thanks for the insightful reaction! You put thought into your analysis and breakdown. This is truly among Supertramp's best compositions - and you're so right about the orchestration in the strings. Nice!

I really appreciate your analysis of the music. This has been my favorite album of all time. I was fortunate to see Supertramp in concert twice. Once in 77 and again in 79. 79 was in a 3000 seat concert hall. Thanks for working thru the entire album.

Got the day off so, it’s a beautiful morning... Rascals? Yes, looked it up. Gonna work for myself today.
Another song I wasn’t sure I was going to like, slow burn time. Supertramp is so different, I just need to reorient my mind esp. in the morning... still have a dreamover.
Rudy was a trip. Shakti’d it was so good. Really helped to have your analysis, made the song come to life for me. Trying to break out of my personal prison, feel it can and will be done. Thanks Justin,

As good as this album is I still think Crisis what Crisis and Even In The Quietest Moment stand right up there with this one. I would hate to have to pick if I could only have one of them ! Kinda like picking your favorite kid lol not a good choice to make?

Glasses - there are some cleaning methods on Y.Tube using dish washing liquid under a tap. Sometimes greasy spots (possibly from eyelashes) just get smeared around using a cloth or tissue. Many times I even put a smudge on the lens I'm holding because I didn't bother washing my hands first.

Spot in glasses? Possibly floating fragments in your eye? JP!! So glad you got to this song. It's probably my favorite song from Supertramp. It really pretty me in a mood. Love what you got from it, dude! Thanks again for your great thorough content.
There's a band Swedish Prog band named Anekdoten that I think everyone should listen to. And I know you especially will enjoy them. I suggest the song, Writing on the Wall. It's 9 minutes, but what an incredible journey it takes you on! Wonderfully flowing loose music structure with ominous lyrics (in English) and their playing is spot on. I'm excited to hear what you think. Anyway, have a great day, bud!

@@JustJP and so you did! 2 months ago. That's great! In that reaction you said the arrow is right here (pointing to the middle). And you wanted to hear more. If you end up getting back to them, I definitely would recommend "Writing on the Wall". It hurts a lot harder but still flows in and out of movements seemlessly. And of course, the lyrics, I think are beautiful. Having experience with your reaction, I'm excited for you to hear it, if you can get to it. It's my favorite song right now. Cheers, Justin!
