BEAR COUNTRY Camping ALONE in a BEAR TENT

  • I love looking for new places to camp. In this video, I go deep into bear country for an overnighter in my bear tent with an electric bear fence. Luckily I wasn't eaten. This is called a bear tent by RBM Outdoors. It's just a name. No magic bear proof materials.
The jaylegere discount code is discontinued.

How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the TH-cam training (watching) over the years.

You can easily tell the difference between black bear scat and grizzly bear scat. Black bear scat has berries and sticks and the like in it and grizzly scat has bits of flannel and smells like pepper spray

You can deter bears from entering camp sites with a portable electric bear fence. Small kit that brings huge peace of mind.

Only thing I would ad is when sleeping in a tentt in bear country I never sleep with my head against the tent anywhere. Place your cot in the center of the tent for more protection.

In Scotland we call those flys Clegs, not to be confused with the midge. Insects can make summer camping a trial. But then again at least we don’t have bears to worry about.

Years back when I lived in the UK I used to use a UV lamp that had an electric shock cage around it to kill off annoying flying bugs like mosquitoes. You might be able to find something similar that you can either run off batteries or the Jackery? Mine was AC powered, but very low wattage. Not so fun to clean out, but worked like a charm.

Ya, it's tough to get a meal completed when you know the bears are gonna show up at dusk!!!! Never had the pleasure of an invisible bear fence, but I know from experience that urinating, or marking the area does not work----- A hungry bear knowing there's humans around, will wait till dark and use stealth to try and get your food----- We've heard bears walk by our tent at night, sniffing loudly, and have had a few come into our tent while we were out fishing--- Never leave anything edible in the tent-- That includes toothpaste!!!!

Who else thought a Bear was going to come up behind him while he was eating his sandwich. Not sure that tent would even stop a Rabid Chipmunk let alone a several hundred pound Bear. The tape is there to remind you not to walk into the fence the Bear is coming for your food he doesn't care about some tape. I have seen a Bear go right through a electric fence without even flinching to get to a Apple .

If you have a good white pine to hang your food, or even in a food storage locker in Alaska, try to minimize the time you have food out, cooking time, and clean up afterwards--- Avoid wiping your hands on your pants, and keep them washed---- Bears want food, not us!!!

Another great video Jay. From Ontario and for the deer fly's ,i use a fake dragon fly that's clipped to your hat. It's goofy but works. They will be around you but won't land or bite. What is the brand of Bear electric fence that you have, looks just what i need ?

Great to see you again Jay! Why not put the mosquito coil on for a short time when you got into the tent to kill them. Love that Bear tent, the company that makes them really does a great job of constructing it with a lot of helpful features.--MARLYS

    9:10, just WOW!
We call them biting flies and they do live up to the name. Bug spray doesn’t seem to affect them at all.

    • @thomasfoss9963
      @thomasfoss9963 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, black flies are relentless, and bite until dusk!!! We think they drink the Deet!!! Then the mosquitos take over!!! It's always amazing how all the mammals in the north have survived this onslaught of insects!

When I go out and there are a lot of pesky flying insects I wear a bee keeper's head gear. They make special head gear for this purpose but I already had a bee keeper's outfit.

Once the deer flies, horse flies, and black flies stop biting and harassing you, then, all you have to worry about are the clouds of mosquitos that will descend upon you at night!!!!!! That's why we do our wilderness trips in the early fall---- Less bugs, but more hungry bears!!!! Head netting is a must if you're on a summer trip, and while I hate to smear DEET on my body, some good jungle juice is mandatory-------

Battery window and door alarm, attach small hook to release, combine with bank line or such around perimeter.
    Comes in a 4 pk.
Will wake the dead when compromised.

We did 10 day BWCAW and Quetico PP canoe trips up to Lac La Croix for 20 years---- Don't worry about the clouds of mosquitos you'll have to deal with--- Black flies are by far the worst problem you'll encounter--- Strategies to thwart their constant presence are utilized in and around camp, and, you must clear them out of the canoe every time you get in it!!! They will follow you out into the lake, clinging to the sides of the boat, biting your ankles along the way!!!! We have had black bears in our camp and in our tents a few times, so food handling, preparation, and storage are vital to a successful trip!!! We don't always hang our food as bears get to know the good trees--- I became very adept at placing my food pack into the nose of the canoe, and with my 25 ' anchor rope, pushing it out in the lake to wedge it on the tip of a fallen spruce in the water-- It takes lots of practice, but it became a tried and true method!!!! My buddies thought I was nuts at first, but I've never had an incident, whereas we have had nighttime encounters with bears in camp, trashing our kitchen etc, but then again, it only works on calm nights-----
