The fact that you did this with all season tires and made it thru mud, snow etc is amazing! This thing is incredibly rugged for a low price.

I own a 2003 Outlander which I bought used in March 2005 with 49,000 miles on it. It is now March 2015, and I am just about to cross 200,000 miles. Although I have had some issues with suspension bushings, and a rebuilt tranny at about 175,000 miles, I have had no issues at all with the engine. And to top it off, I just realized recently that I am still on my original timing belt!! My AWD model was the first year for the Outlander, and only has 140 hp from a 2.4 liter 4 cyl. While the power is on the low end, you get used to it, so for me, that is not a big issue. I've had this car offroad in similar conditions you show in the ORV park and have had no trouble with it at all. I personally think Mitsubishi cars are underrated overall. The press and auto reviewers tend not to give them much credit. But with the success I've had with my Outlander, I and seriously considering another one. I like the smaller footprint of the Sport (even though I know it really isn't sporty), and I like the overall better utility of the Outlander reviewed here. The only problem in my consideration of Mitsubishi, is the questionable viability of the brand in the US. A 10year/100K mile warranty would be no good if no dealers are around to honor it. For me, interior "modernness" is not a factor. I tend to like simplicity more. For me, the key factor is reliability. And if the trend continues with Mitsubishi like it has for my '03 Outlander, then they are definitely worthy of consideration.

Nice SUV for this price and 2.4L engine. I love this style and color both!

The gas mileage is lower because of the cold weather. it'll go back up when it gets warmer.

I noticed that, In the summer I have gotten up to 33 MPG on a drive from Newton IA to Eagle grove IA and back (going the speed limit, Using adaptive cruise) , In the winter not as much but also the vehicle is idling a lot more to warm it up so its not so cold when we get into it and that effects the AVG as well.

I can get a 4WD Outlander SE at a dealer in Southern California for $21,750 optioned the same way as Dave's test vehicle. That's a really good price for a small SUV with 4WD. For how it performed in this test - I'd give it a 7. Pretty solid for the kind of vehicle it is, the engine and tires.

Dave you do a great job and are a great talent. However I own a 2015 Outlander GT and could not agree with you less. In fact when I look into actual owner reviews they agree with me. I know the knock is the care is competent but does not stand out in any one area. I did not expect to like the car as much as I did but I love it. I never planned on being a Mitsu guy but over the years I have owned 6. EVO, 2 Eclipse, 3000GT, Diamante and the outlander. None have ever been in the shop. Not one. They are just good cars. There is a lot to be said about that. BTW, the GT would have had a much better showing in this video.

I'd give 6.9 ! I'm an honda fan and pilot does a better job in orv park than this Mitsubishi outlander. Still is an okay SUV but I think honda pilot and Subaru crosstrek are the two great SUVs in this segment IMO. Great video as always Dave. Thank you for your time.

Not a bad vehicle for the money. Probably the best buy for the money. Mitsubishi made the best off road vehicle such as pajero for executives, but for past few years they have been producing mediocre products. Give us the Evo with around 350 Hp with dual clutch and active super stiff sports handling mode!!

I like the clean and simple styling, but don't love it - except for the grille, which looks really cool but probably has to be seen up close to be appreciated. I hope that carries over to more Mitsubishis. 3-row seating is a nice feature that puts it in a unique niche. Interior looks nicer than earlier models. I'm not anti-CVT, but I'm not a fan of this particular drivetrain. It's amongst the noisiest and thrashiest out there, and not in a good way. Jeep developed a software "low-range" for the Jatco CVT on the Patriot which would have been perfect for the Outlander, but it looks like they didn't include that function, or Hill Descent Control. Too bad, because the rest of Mitsu's AWC system is pretty cool. The V6 probably makes this a considerably better vehicle, but the Plug-In Hybrid that comes out next year is really the only reason to get excited about this car. I'd love to see an off-road test of that one when it's available!
6/10 with lots of room for improvement!

Just bought a used 2011 Outlander GT with 49Kmi hoping for fun I could do some light off-roading in fire roads and such. I have put approximately 1K miles on it so far. My tires appear to be a bit more aggressive all weather Sumitomo's and V6 has 230HP. I believe this set up would have stood a good chance making up that one hill. Thanks for the review.

I would give the Outlander a 7. The only vehicles I think would do very successful at this trail without having to do any extra maneuvers, such as accelerating fast, would be anything made from Jeep or a Range Rover.

I would say eight out of 10 if it was able to complete all maneuvers but the one which you say most vehicles cannot complete. My first impression of the vehicle in person is that the grill looks cheap the lines do have a bit of Range Rover but the interior leans more toward the cheap grill not really impressed. Having owned a 2007 outlander V6 I'm definitely pulling for Mitsubishi on this one though.

I really don't like this car. I think compared to the competition, this has nothing on them. This would be a good car maybe 8-10 years ago but not in 2014. Can you do an off road review of the Subaru XV Crosstrek (gasoline or hybrid) at the ORV park? I think that would be really cool!

I dont't like that color. In charcol gray or white, look a lot better. And Dae, the V-6 has 226 hp; not 244. You should show in this video that the second row folds flat in the floor. Excelente video anyway!

Dave, your off-road tests are really informative. I noticed that you have disengaged the traction control right at the beginning of the test.
Below is a link to a snow/mud test of a group of SUVs.
From the tested cars the Kia Sportage, VW Touareg, Honda CRV, Mitsubishi Outlander, Volvo XC 60 are also available in the US, although with different engines.
    totalcar.hu/tesztek/2013/02/14/nagy_suv_terepteszt/
You may google-translate the written test to English and watch the video afterwards. There were two attempts with each car. The first one with full auto mode and the second with all available tweaks (locking the differential, traction control off, elevated suspension, whatever was available). All cars were equipped with manufacturer suggested WINTER TIRES. Mitsubishi Outlander came out the absolute winner. Some cars (Kia Sportage for example) did significantly better with traction control on, some others without, so you might want to try in your future tests to attempt climbing the "ultimate hill" in your ORV park with both ways. Thanks.
