Outlander Sport is one of the few small SUVs that has a 4wd lock feature. It was also rated the most reliable small suv by owner surveys to Consumer's Reports. Now available with an optional 2.4 liter larger engine. I want one!
A cool thing about the lock feature, unlike many multi-plate hydraulic clutch pack awd systems, this system won't revert back to a 100/0 f/r torque split above 20 or so mph. The most it will go to is a 60/40 f/r split. It also is one of very few that can send up to 60% of power to the rear axle if need be. Most other systems top out at 50%.

The UK gets the Outlander Sport (ASX) with only a 1.6L, South Africa only the 2.0L. The RAV4 and Outlander Sport are not sold with V6's in other major territories.
2020 Sadly mitsubishi has cheaped out lowered the quality, but raised the price. 2015 all the outlander sport models(ES, SE, GT) had a 2.0L, or 2.4Loption, now in 2020 (ES, SP, SE, BE, GT) only the GT model(most expensive) has the 2.4L option.
I will admit. This vehicle is exactly what it was made for. My model has the 2wd but it can get through this kind of course any day. Snow, heat, rain it just knows how to work. On the highway? I definitely driven over 600 miles on a tank before needing to refill. It’s a vehicle that’ll make you want to take care of it. I also had a Mirage SE at one point. Carried me to work in the snow in Texas with no problems. These vehicles have solidified my loyalty to the Mitsubishi brand.
Just bought a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 5 speed manual, and I absolutely love it...plenty of power, good mpg and quick in the city, UAW built, made in the USA...one of the BEST cars I've ever owned...
FINALLY!! I've been waiting for this! I got the 2014. Took it off road and it did amazing!! Never bottomed out once. 8.5" FTW! The cvt with the paddle shifters kicks ass and is really fun to use. They are also very useful to downshift; I barely use the brakes.
Im a Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ owner and am impressed by this "softroader". This crossover is on my list for a future vehicle. I dont expect it to be as good as my Jeep offroad but this vid showed it has some suprisingly decent capabilities.
I was impressed with its off road capability. Mitsubishi seems to have always done well with its four wheel/all wheel drive systems. And you definitely put it through its paces I think. Nice work Dave.
I just bought the 2wd manual a few months ago. I absolutely love it. Manual looks like it would handle off road better than the CVT. Its definitely worth a drive with a traditional manual!!
Very reliable and maintenance is usually only oil changes. The breaks last forever or close to. Oh yes; mechanics don't like it much since it requires so little maintenance and with few tools you can mostly do everything on your own. Everything is very accessible...
Your really good at this, I think you need to take your reviews to the next level and compare several at once with support from one of the big magazines or something, they would be crazy not to consider it. I just bought one of these used from the dealer and it still drives well and the interior held up quite well it still looks new to me, no scratches or anything from normal touching. It is very dark though kinda cave feeling. The CVT is like driving a motor-boat, but I have figured out that if you just tap the paddle shifter down to 6 or 5 when your about to go up a hill on the highway or pass someone it will behave for a minute and hold the revs higher without constantly trying to get back to the lower rpm. There is a dial on the left where you can adjust the headlights from inside the car, along with the foglights and highbeams, and you can have them all on at once its makes night driving easy.
They're definitely better for off road use rather than commuting. I have a 2014 and I travel 92 miles one way four days out of the week and I average 23 MPG while traveling 70 MPH. The only time I get 30+ MPG is when I'm traveling 60MPH and below, if I'm lucky.
i owned a 2012 and loved it. Ended getting rid of it with little over 56,000 miles on it and not one bit of trouble. Only reason ended up getting rid of it was due to my drive to work over 60 miles everyday 5-6 days a week, got a 2014 Prius and then got rid of the Prius got a 2015 Outlander Sport SE. Previously my wife had a 2013 and loved it also, it ended up getting totaled by rolling huge tire down the road. Only reason she didn't get another Outlander was, she seen a Cadillac SRX loaded for sale and bought it. I keep a set of 16 inch rims with dedicated snow tires for winter around here in WV and I rarely even have to use the AWC.

I've run my 2018 outlander sport es 2wd 5spd through water up to my hood with no issues... they'll actually backflow and regurgitate any water sucked up I found hahaha
We have a 2020 model. It has the much more relevant styling and updated crash avoidance tech, but it’s still the same antiquated 2.0/CVT/AWC setup this uses. It’s slow for sure, but it’s the most capable rural-living CUV we have ever owned. Why? Short wheelbase, good ground clearance, and a functional 4x4 design that works as advertised. Like owning a Subaru Crosscheck, but at much less expense. We’ve got 85,000 miles on it, and it’s ready for new rear brakes, but other than that the only thing that’s failed following the maintenance schedule was the factory battery. Made it two years to the month and it was done. 😂

That's one thing Mitsubishi has going for it is it's AWC systems, it maybe old, but it's still a very good system! Just a shame they never updated much of it especially in the Lancer lineup. Hopefully, you can snag a Mitsubishi Evo or Ralliart like to see what 0-60 times you can get with those!!!
their awc is old and not updated? they just won pikes peak mountain race and rally championship with their brand new electric powered awc system. they are replacing the Lancer with the electric awc outlander.
Mitsubishi makes some capable vehicles. My 2004 Montero Limited is amazing and for a SUV it's size it has the tightest turning circle of any SUV I've owned.

Ok. Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, here in Canada it is the RVR. So, take an 2015 RVR 2.4l AWC GT against a 2015 Mazda CX-5 2.5l AWD GS. What do you get. Which has more recalls, problems, etc, which tends to be better? Looking for quick replies as I'm on the fence and ready to pick one of them. May I have feed back please.
The up close shots are cool but, to me, it is more entertaining to see the landscape view (going up the hills) much like with the Yukon, MDX, and Santa Fe.

Dave or expert: if the car was in 4x4 lock, then why was the rear [left] spinning as the front [left] was stationary? I though that 'Lock' meant all 4 wheels keep spinning. To me it looked like you had it in AWC, for the last section of extreme angles.
I know this comment is late but by 4x4 lock they mean it keeps the car in awd mode, 50% torque to each axle. However the differentials are still open, they are not locked. So the side of each axle with the least grip will still spin more.
Hey Dave. Great video as always. I've always been annoyed with Mitsubishi about this car. It's a decent looking crossover and pretty capable yet it's always been way under powered. And to call it a "sport"!?!? Come on now. Even with the "big" engine you said it's turning out around 168hp? What a joke. Mitsubishi makes far more powerful motors so why not use them in this sporty suv!?! CVTs stink lol. And really the fuel economy numbers aren't really that impressive either for such a small motor with a CVT. Thee lack of power would make me not buy this vehicle. I mean how many engines are there out there that are small displacement and turbocharged that are pumping out at least 200-300 hp?? It drives me crazy!!! Step it up Mitsubishi. Anyway keep up the good work Dave. We appreciate your time and effort bringing us these quality videos.

Marlon, I'd still prefer Mitsubishi. I will admit I'm a bit biased because my cars are all made by Mitsu. I just believe that they produce solid cars, they are all well built and have fantastic warranties.
I'd consider it if it had a conventional 6-speed auto with a Turbo. The 2.0L that only makes 148hp is weak for its displacement. Even the 2.4 is weak. Thats why these arent popular.
but Honda and Toyota's sell themselves. Now Hyundai is selling because of their powerful powertrains and unique looks with lots of tech for a good price. This has the tech but it's like 30k!!
We bought 3 Mitsubishi outlander sport vehicles all three cars have transmission issues, my car only had 30,000 miles. Will never ever buy another car such as this one. Next test Gonna all manufactuer.
It would be better sir if you are letting US see the outlander go off road. Not just a bunch of cams strap in the outlander. All we can is your FACE and the car's wheels. You shoule be letting us see what are the true potential of the car. Not your speech. Same goes with your other videos

What's really funny is that this thing just got more off-road time than most Jeep Cherokees do, and made it with flying colors.
Thats because jeeps sucks now, you want a good one you have to get one from the 90's, or even older.

You should also turn off traction control to show what the AWD system can actually do.

Try it in the snow with some blizzak tires. It is a blast!
