    The early seasons of law & order are a great example of ratings not always being an accurate reflection of the quality of a show. Some of these early episodes were the very best while the ratings were mediocre. What probably saved the show was the fact that critics loved it from the beginning. The ratings really didn't enter top 30 territory until season 5 I think.

      @@creatip123 haha right? I think in some ways it is a radical departure from a lot of television dramas. It requires a lot of attention to detail, it's not a show you can watch as a family if people are going to talk through it. It's TV for intelligent people for sure and it rewards people who pay attention. There is such little discussion of the characters personal lives that it amplifies the effect of the few times that they do and makes it more powerful in that way... Once people started catching on to what a well-written and acted show it was and how relevant it is to our society it's popularity increased tenfold and eventually it was a top 10 show and won an Emmy. I love watching the reruns even from the early seasons because many of the issues discussed are still extremely relevant today all these years later. Great show.

    I loved the Ben Stone character. I can't remember if they ever delved into his backstory, like they did for McCoy. Other than references to being in parochial grade school, what was the moral fire propelling Stone. Also felt there was a lot of unexplored territory for Robinette. One more than one occasion I asked myself why he did work in the Public Defenders office.
    It would be interesting to have him make few cameos in the resurrected series. Heck, Jamie Ross is back.

    • @mikeg8375
      @mikeg8375 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I have a feeling we will see Robinette again this season. Richard Brooks has come back for guest appearances a few times. I'd be really excited to see Abbie Carmichael or Serena Southerlyn who we haven't seen since they left the show.

    • @melotone3305
      @melotone3305 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Back when it originally aired, I felt sort of cheated by the way the Robinette character seemed lacking in depth. Sure, he was playing second to Stone and then McCoy. But I never quite got the sense of what he would do if he had to fill their shoes. And between Stone's moral high horse and McCoy's gotta win, Robinette had to be the lone black voice that sees unequal discretionary prosecutions. I really wish Moriarty could have stayed with the program for maybe 2 seasons longer. The writing for them still had potential. Thank goodness there was Lt. VanBuren on the "cops" side AND that character was allowed to develop as a full person.
