    I understand that Olivia was heartbroken over Elliot’s departure from SVU as we all were. But the person heartbroken over the most about it besides Liv was Cragen. For years, Cragen had Elliot under his wing and even said Elliot was like a son. Cragen was pushing as hard as he could to make sure Elliot came back but he never did. To see Elliot with Cragen after all those years of being apart feels like another closure the fans could’ve used.

      And he’s right. People have to be look at in the era they are in not based on whatever the current moral standards or current beliefs are. There’s a lot that was done in the past that was morally objectionable but in it’s day was the norm. It doesn’t mean we over look something as a whole but when evaluating individuals we must keep the context and the era in mind before we decide to cancel them and deem the no longer worthy of being admired.

    I really missed how Cragen grounds Stabler. Cragen was always able to get Stabler to bring it down a notch. This scene brought tears to my eyes. Cragen absolutely used the right phrase to help Elliott manage his feelings about his father and the Combat Cross medal. An Act of Contrition is exactly what I think his father was trying to say. Be a better man than me. I wouldn’t be surprised if that isn’t why his father was so horrible to them at home and drank so heavily. To cope with the pain of the things he saw and had to do on the job. He didn’t know how to be a better man and didn’t know how to tell Elliott and his children to be better than him. Different time and way of thinking sadly. Maybe Elliott can start making peace with that part of his past too.

    • @tammylewis2408
      @tammylewis2408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Agree. One has to remember in the 50s 60s 70s and even into the 80s, PTSD was not talked about, especially in law enforcement; it took Vietnam veterans to open dialogue about the subject. Stabler's father, like many at the time, didn't have the support that would have helped him and his family. Law enforcement has had the highest rates of substance abuse, domestic violence, and suicides because of what they experienced in their jobs day in and day out. Stabler's father experienced those, and took it out on his family, especially Stabler's mother and Stabler himself. Stabler's mother was diagnosed as bipolar, but I also believed she may had had postpartum depression/psychosis as well (it definitely would be understandable if it was revealed that she developed postpartum after having Stabler). That and the domestic abuse may have triggered her illness. Not only that, his father came from a generation where men didn't show their feelings; they would have been perceived as wimpy, cowardly, and other negative connotations. The culture of law enforcement exacerbated it; he had to be tough on the job, but was unable to convey those feelings to his family, drinking and abusing his family was a way to convey those feelings. Mrs. Stabler left and Stabler was forced to grow up and protect his siblings from their father's abuse. Cragen knows all too well what the negative side of law enforcement does to a good person; he has been a father figure to Benson and Stabler, and helping them to navigate the rough waters. But there's one person who would understand what Stabler has gone thru and that is Benson.

Back when SVU did a crossover with a Chicago show, there weren't three Chicago shows, and there were no other L & O shows.

    One thing that stands out- Cragen doesn’t badmouth Stabler’s dad. Doesn’t speak ill of him at all- because he knows how Elliot felt about him, and because no matter what, Joe was his father. He simply told Elliot what he should already know-his dad was a tough man doing a tough job, faced with hard decisions . He made a decision to protect his partner. Whether right or wrong, that’s what he did because he was loyal to his partner and that loyalty was paramount in a job where life or death may depend on that partner- and the times sure sounded like it did. How many times did Stabler bend rules for Benson? For that matter, how many times did Cragen do it for Stabler, for them all?
    You do the best you can, the best you know, by the best lights you have at the time. There are times you’re right, times you’re wrong.
    But until you’re in that moment, all you can do is think you’ll do this-when you may wind up doing that
