This list is so awesome! Arcane is my favorite show too, and Vi is for sure the best character, but I have to agree the Veronica Mars just can’t be beat! A great list, even a couple names I’m not familiar with, but now I’m excited that I have something new to watch! Glad to see Agent Carter in the honorable mentions, (she’s just so cool!) and honestly her show is really underrated. Surprised not to see Ahsoka (from Star Wars [Clone Wars/Rebels/Mandalorian] get a mention though

Gwen Stacy (Spiderverse) Fun fact she is voiced by Hailee Steinfeld the same voice actor for Vi
    Katniss (Hunger Games)
    Princess Leia (Star wars)

    Vi and Mel
    Toph (Avatar the last airbender)
    Black Widow & Wanda (MCU)

    Mulan (Mulan 90s version)

I think we should not forget about Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road!!!
Some of the traits that elevate her, in my book, to be among these excellent examples of badass women are
    - resilient, (no spoilers here, go watch it!)
    - compassionate and vulnerable
    - cunning
    - physically capable to stand her ground against stronger enemies without superpowers
    - Tenacious, but willing to listen to others and to collaborate to achieve a goal, that is greater in scope, than the one she set out to achieve
    - responsible: by being an active participant in bringing about societal change in an apocalyptic setting
I admire Charlize Theron’s captivating portrayal of this strong female lead character.

You have great taste. One of my favorite badass female leads from recent times (notwithstanding the manga or anime) is Alita. She has a childlike naivete, a zest for life, and is pure of heart, but is simultaneously an incredible fighting machine.

I recently discovered this channel and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the analysis and how unique the opinions were on certain things. And this video is also very interesting.
I would like to know your opinion. I often hear on the Internet that Vi is very similar in her badass to Ellie from The Last of Us and that they have many similarities. There are obviously differences, because we're talking about two different characters. I'm interested in your opinion on this.

    • @tildaowen
      @tildaowen  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you like my content 😊 I must say I'm a little at a loss to make the comparison between Vi and Ellie, seeing as I have only seen six episodes of The Last of Us so far and never played the game (I'm not into jump scares or zombies, so it takes me a while to get through the episodes, though I definitely see the quality of the show). But if you compare Ellie to young Vi in episode 1-3 (because I think that's most obvious, I'm not sure a comparison applies to when Vi is an adult...), then I guess there are some similarities. Like their courage and resilience and lack of respect for authorities. But Vi is a street kid, a leader of a group/gang and a bit of a thief. Vi has oppressors to fight, whereas Ellie is not much of a leader. She's independent, yes, but not a leader. And she fights for survival same as Vi, but on a much larger scale. Ellie is a messiah character, carrying the cure for mankind, and Vi may be a key player and a protagonist, but she doesn't have that saviour-of-all status. At least not on the same level (yet?). So no, I don't see an obvious link between Vi and Ellie, though they do have some similarities. I think they are linked "out there" because Arcane and The Last of Us are the best game adaptations ever! So naturally they're compared... 😊

For me, she is the best character in the whole Arrowverse. She is badass, resilient, cool, smart, and vulnerable at times. Sara and Ava forever ❤️❤️❤️ As to character types, I'm way more into someone like Felicity Smoak, her tech skills, befuddled lines full of double entendres (lol) and her goodness of heart had me looking twice. She's badass too! But perhaps not in the ass kicking way that Sara Lance is... In general I think the Arrowverse women are a bit too stereotypical and not as well written as those on my list. My own list of badass women is pretty varied (it doesn't entirely make sense even to me). Some of the characters are not the first thing one thinks when they think "badass." But all have a strength of will which is virtually unbreakable.
Hanna (Hanna - 2011) [with its canon sapphic text, how can she not be at the top of my list?]
Princess Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind)
Milly Pontipee (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers)

What a great list. Some nice surprises here (guess I need to rewatch some stuff😉) , but I can relate to all of them.
For me GoT had some great badass women as well (Brienne, Arya, Ygritte, Olenna Tyrell) and for me Ripley from Alien(s) should be mentioned as well being more or less the first female lead in an action movie. Although "badass" might not really fit here.

I will send you a list via instagram, if you are interrested. 👍
Apart of that Riot more or less announced that they are planing a RCU (Runeterra Cinematic Universe).
They will use different forms of media for this. Most likely an anime will be part of it. But they also seem to be hiring actors/actresses for an irl movie/show. This universe is huge. We just visited one (or two?) city of an entire world. ☝️

Good job recalling Dark Angel, I had nearly forgotten about that one. Dragon Prince? I'll have to check that out... it has been a long time since i have looked into new anime.
Very cool #1 pick, (I was expecting Buffy) but what did you think of the movie?
    As for Tarentino.....
I can only stomach the first one he made, and the very last. If you have not seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, give it a try. I was .... well, flaberghasted. It was more real than usual, in a good way.

    • @tildaowen

Thanks, I really liked season 1 of Dark Angel. I really like Buffy too, but I guess she's too girly for this list? I don't know, because I do think she's badass, but maybe Faith is more badass? Well, she's certainly more crazy!
I can definitely recommend The Dragon Prince s1-3! It's both for kids and adults, so much less hard hitting than Arcane, but a good story and a good female lead!
And yes, almost every episode of Veronica Mars, seasons 1-3 had me muttering "badass" at some point, so she's my number one! Not as excited about the film, but it's still Veronica so...

@@johnwolf2829 Nah, it's OK, I like to hear what people find badass in women 😊 Thanks for your input. And I agree, Buffy went on for too long and Angel too short. They both suffered from storylines that felt off because of the length, and because roles were written out (killed), because an actor wanted to do sth else... I'll never forgive "Angel" for killing Cordelia and turning Fred into that thing...

I mean, Cordy DID have a great exit in the end, best of them all IMHO, but Fred...
Wow, it is almost as if there was something vindictive about it.
And of course she was made into a soulless engine of destruction, as if we needed another one of those. Oddly enough, that blue Demon-Goddess thing actually did start to show the potential to become something interesting with potential for growth, about 5 minutes before they killed the series.
      ... sigh....
I have a recommendation for you, it is a book. "Maia" by Richard Adams, published about 40 years ago. The main Char is a 16 year old that never wins a battle or fights at all, but shows tremendous courage (the moral sort most especially) and fills 1,000 pages so well that I have read it 3 times.

Jessica Jones is less cute (both character and show) and way more hard hitting. But both shows have that irony which I really love!

Good list! I was especially happy that you included Jessica Jones, which I thought was probably one of the best first seasons of a Netflix show ever. Did you know that initially the writers were planning for Trish and Jessica to be ex lovers before they decided on adopted sisters?
    For me I’d add -
    - Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings films (the “I am no man” scene was life changing for me as a tween when I watched return of the king)
    - Lyra Belacqua (His Dark Materials, and even though she’s a total bitch I can’t deny Mrs Coulter her props as one of the most interesting mothers in fiction)
    - Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
    - Furiosa (Mad Max)
    - Brienne of Tarth (Game of Thrones)
    - Hermione Granger (I don’t agree with JK Rowling but I think she created a fantastic flawed female heroine in Hermione)

I didn't know that Jessica and Trish had been thought up as ex lovers... But I actually really love their friendship/sibling relationship, so I think I'd prefer that... Which makes the latter two seasons really heart-wrenching, so I agree with you on season 1 being the best!
Otherwise I like your list of badass women, though I never made it through either watching or reading The Golden Compass/His Dark Materials, so Lyra isn't really on my radar...
I love Hermione! But a little too nice to be really badass, at least in the definition of this list...
