- This video is a thorough analysis of the bed scene with Vi and Caitlyn in "Arcane" season 1 episode 8, as well as a comparison between Violyn's story and an Austen classic. The video is also my way of sharing my love for Caitlyn and Vi on the annual love festival, sharing favourite moments with fans of the show.

I love the fact that Gender and Sexuality is not a big deal in this show. It's so simple, so refreshing.
Seeing Vi so relaxed in that vulnerable setting still brings tears to my eyes. I did not expect her to lay in Cait's Bed after her Mom literally just pointed a gun to their faces. That shows how much Vi has grown when it comes to trusting others (especially an Enforcer!!!!!)
Cait gives Vi everything she needs in that moment. An open Ear, no Pressure, no Blame only comfort and care. (Just Cait things thats why we love her so much!)
The Way Caitlyn tries to reach out in the "what about us?" scene breaks my heart. She is literally reaching out for Vi trying to get her closer, trying not to lose her. Gosh it's so sad and hurtful.
I can't wait to see their Relationship in Season 2.

I know the " you're hot cupcake" scene is their most iconic and loved but I honestly prefer their bed scene it's probably the first time in years vi got to open up and be vulnerable with someone and Caitlyn listening to her is so comforting i find it the most important part in relationships that you know you can open up to someone and they would listen and offer you comfort i am a sucker to these kind of scenes they are always wholesome and comforting
Side note it's also probably the first time in a while vi got to lay in a good soft bed in years
Yes, it's a wonderful scene! And I agree with your observations, this place is quite the contrast to what Vi is used to... I think I say more about this in some of my other videos: "Why Does Vi Fall for Caitlyn" and "What Was the Plan at the Council, Caitlyn and Vi?" 😊

Every time I finish watching i feel this sense of clarity like I’ve learned something new, despite subconsciously already knowing it. Like I’ve never felt I had to think hard about Vi and Cait and this scene before, it just made sense. But the way you explain things it’s like I’m in the characters thoughts, and that’s such a cool feeling!

The perfect treat 4 months late. Loved this. Darcy and Elizabeth, yes! Their comfort with each other seems to exceed what one would expect in almost every scene given their backgrounds and circumstances. It is chemistry, intimacy and eventually love that helps create their comfortability under extreme external duress.
Thanks! And I agree, they very quickly get comfortable with each other, mainly because they have to. Several situations arise where they are dependant on the other. Trust grows between them rather fast too, because of these situations and because they realise they CAN rely on each other and generally speaking have the same goals. It's beautifully and subtly written!

The way Vi looked at Cait after Cait caresses her cheek sends me on a trajectory, my heart is sprinting, my stomach is filled with butterflies. It's a distrust that she could receive such love, I think. I'm in pain. I love this.
Yes, it's an incredibly beautiful moment! Vi is in pain and Caitlyn embraces it ❤️ And we are in exquisite pain too (especially when Vi pushes Caitlyn away later 😭)
@@tildaowen In Everything I Need by Skylar Grey, there is a line that says "like the sea, she keeps kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times she pushes her away." Can you see a resemblance? One helps the other, and later, Vi pushes her away, but Caitlyn keeps thinking about her. That goes to show what true love is.
@@user-pi6qr7zm7m yes, I like that image. But unlike the sea, I think Caitlyn has a limit to the amount of pushing away she can take. Like if Vi still chooses Jinx after Jinx has bombed Caitlyn's mother...

Impressive video Tilda Owen. I have almost forgotten about you and your TH-cam channel. As I was caught in other things in life, like college, autism, spirituality and other LGBTQ content in other animated universes and franchises like The Loud House. I actually love the scene where Vi and Caitlyn have a moment's peace in bed. It's peaceful, beautiful and cute. Like I said before, you're able catch things that no one else notices. It's amazing. I can't wait to see you next TH-cam videos about Jinx's role in Vin and Caitlyn's relationship or Caitlyn's role in Vi and Jinx's relationship. It's going to be interesting.

So glad to hear you again ! One of the things that that my wife and I discussed was how naturally this relationship felt. It wasn't held up with streamers and fireworks or pushed upon us out of nowhere. It grew, organically, just like the buddy cop movies where distrust and anger eventually advance to mutual respect. It's not a "Oh, wee, Riot is just being edgy here" this relationship isn't surprising, doesn't come out of the blue, and doesn't jolt us. I found the Mel/Jayce coupling (both figurative and literal) much more sudden. This pairing was both written and animated/filmed/directed so well. As with most of Arcane's strengths in both character and dialogue, it's so very familiar, normal, and true to everyday life. It is so very relatable.

I agree completely with what you said! I think Mel and Jayce was supposed to feel jarring to begin with, also because it wasn't exactly sincere from Mel's side... But Caitlyn and Vi just felt real and natural ❤️
@@tildaowen I'm of the opinion that initially it wasn't sincere from Mel's side - a bit of the wolf showing there - but after Jayce opened up to her and I think she realized that there was more than she thought there. It served as a counter point to her mother - all wolf all the time - that she would use and discard males as needed.

So glad that Caitlyn is paralleled with Mr Darcy who's a male. Oftentimes, since she is presenting more femininely, the more masculine traits/roles are assigned to Vi, not her. This doesn't mean that a couple needs such a dynamic, I'm merely expressing my glee in seeing the gender roles getting mixed up so honestly and naturally.

Glad to see another video! You just uploaded on time as if on purpose. This will surely distract me a bit, thank you. Currently 10 provinces (not just cities, provinces with multiple cities, villages, and towns) here in Turkey have been leveled to the ground due to 2 separate earthquakes (7.8 and 7.6 respectively) that hit the south-eastern part of Turkey within 9 hours. There are 31k dead currently and 15 million people lived there. First one happened at 4 am so 15 million people were sleeping, tens of thousands of houses collapsed, not enough rescue teams for all. Everyone has come to help us but for many that was too late. It gets so cold here during winter, temperature dropped below zero, in some of those provinces it went as far as -15°C yesterday, even if they were saved they died of hypothermia under tons of rubble. I haven't slept for 5 days and I can't do anything other than donate money to our charities. I can't even listen to music or read a book, I keep rereading the same pages over and over. Seeing the channels I follow upload new vids at this time feels like seeing an old friend, so thank you.
My fav scene is also bed scene. I just love such moments in any media where people not only catch a breath and share their private things but I simply love when two people look directly into each other's eyes and see their souls. You see that very rarely. It also happens rarely in life, as people rarely stop to see each other for who they really are. People think everything lies in words and dialogues where reality is in this moment and that's why I love this scene. A simple touch and meeting gazes tell so much more than anything they could've said. Words are very unnecessary. That scene binds them to the present, unbothered by circumstances, only experiencing each other beyond words and worldly status.
I also love that window scene at 15:21, not because of Violyn but I just love that background colors of morning sun, the branch of the tree and the buildings look so beautiful. I love beautiful fantasy cities like this. I actually realised I also love such cities in Europe because they also look fantasy to me, totally unreal. I can't believe people actually live in such places and not in cities like ours. Idk maybe beacuse it's a yearning I have for beautiful cities since every building here looks like really ugly minecraft cube houses and they also collapse in the slightest tremble lol. Anyways.

We don't have many of those in Denmark, but areas in our cities that look right out of a fairy tale... If you ever get the chance, go to Barcelona, it's really magical and unreal in places...

I doubt I'll ever go to Barcelona or any such beautiful city in my lifetime or get to live to see the economy get so good that I can just do my job, not worry about surviving the end of the month and even have spare money to go to places. That will probably never happen. We were about to go to elections this spring but with this current situation they are trying to postpone it (huge mistake, we can't tolerate them anymore) and if they win even one more election we're done for. We'll turn to Afghanistan. This may be even our "better" days rn. The problem is, if somehow they don't win (they will, they just cheat and we can't do anything about it, welcome to dictatorship in democracy's clothes) they won't be going willingly either which makes me fear a civil war. Idk, shit's about hit the fan (as if it hasn't already), and here I am watching vids about fantasy worlds lol. Call it escapism or whatever the hell you'd want to. Very few options to keep my sanity. I guess that's the thing, both Barcelona and the section I just mentioned in Piltover during sunrise are the same thing to me. Both fantasy. It's unreal to me. I always get appalled when foreigners talk about travel advices and where to go as if it's a stroll in the park. I look at other people abroad, young people like me, who have travelled to 20 or maybe 30 countries already. Doing everything I can't. Then we all blame the social media for it. "It's always the people showing off!" Is it though? If it's so normal to you and other people outside, doesn't that mean we don't even live here but just survive? That makes people question their lives. It did to me. Is this even living, I say. Sure it is the same process for everyone. But I can't wrap my head around the fact that high school kids getting jobs at pizza places during summer and buying expensive shit with that. Here we work our asses, sacrificing everything, our sanity, our bodies in bad working conditions no matter the job, our time and everything... We work all the way to 50 and then when we get retired, how much money do we get for it do you think? Let me say, my mom who is a retired municipal officer from our hometown's city hall got only 130k as lump sum. What does that buy? Nothing. A big nothing. A house costs 1.5 million. A car is 1 million (not brand new). Even if you buy a house, there it f*cking collapses onto you. A concrete coffin, that's all it is. No matter what job it is, it never pays good because of the economy. I doubt it will ever change in near future. I was born in it, it's been decades like this. Even if it gets better in a decade or so, who knows whether I'm gonna be there to live it? The 40k dead in the country rn all went to their beds having prepared their shit for the next day. Can you know what will happen? No, no one can. I can die of a natural disaster as such, I can get killed by a man on the street for no reason (you'd be surprised to see the femicide rates here), I can get killed in worse ways for being queer, I can get killed for being non-religious etc etc. And when I tell all these to friends from other countries, they can't believe it. It f*cking is. They get disturbed. They don't want to hear such things. They totally live in another world, completely cut off. None of our problems even match. It's so weird idk. It does not interest you either nor you are the one who needs to hear these things. None of it is your problem or sth you caused, if it comes off as aggressive excuse me, that's how I usually am unfortunately. Nothing directed to you. It was unnecessary info too, but I can't stop complaining about shit most of the time, it just overflows like a full cup as I'm full of this shit. In fact, just saying that makes me want to delete it all rn, I should probably end this and send asap or else I'll just hit delete. But, yeah, Barcelona must be nice, I'm sure. I'll look at its pictures as well. And others. It was a nice vid btw, I like how you get lost in details. Just don't stop doing Arcane vids, that is your trademark. I can clearly see you enjoy it and this ship most. The comparison between Arcane and Pride & Prejudice was very interesting, haven't thought about it before but it clearly works and I can see why. @@Raven_Black_252 I'm sorry things are so messy in your country now, and that your life is not what you wanted. Thanks for sharing! We are allowed to give our opinions truthfully and I don't think you sound aggressive. You sound frustrated, angry and sad and I understand completely...
I find that SFF stories are amazing for many reasons. First of all, it's a form of escapism, as you say, it takes us out of our own lives, so we can be free of our worries and heartaches for a while. Does it solve anything? No, but it does wonders for our mental health! The mind and body has a few moments of respite to recharge batteries, so you can face your real problems again with a relatively clear head afterwards. This aspect of SFF saved my life once.
Secondly, SFF is allegory. It does relate to real life, it is just wrapped in rather strange looking trappings. Behind all the magic and flying objects, there are very real moral tales going on. And Arcane is really, really good at doing this. So many universal themes that we can relate to in there, people acting horribly, nobly and everything in between in their lives. The thing with SFF is that most of the time you don't consciuosly notice the moral messages in the story (this is partly why I try to interpret), they store in your brain subconsciously. And that is the real power of such fiction. It gives you perspective, insight and catharsis very subtly, which means you take it in more easily. I swear, if we have all those in power in Turkey read SFF books for a year or so, we'll see a change!
But of course that's not going to happen... All I'm saying is that you're doing the right thing. You're doing your best with what you've got. So keep reading, keep watching, keep discussing online, etc. It'll keep you sane and more levelled. You're broadening your horizons by doing it!

Really loving the analysis of Violyn. Makes me want to rewatch and create a notebook of my own analysis :)
It doesn't surprise me that Caitlyn is a touch-oriented person - touch would be rare in her life given her station, her mother's personality, and her distance as an observer we witness throughout the show (waiting for just the right moment for her excellent shot).
It also makes sense that Vi is more word oriented - Powder needed the words and Vander illustrated this for Vi with how he tried words first, fists second. Also, I suspect too many touches were not from a place of love in her life but from authority, danger, and grief/helplessness/hatred.
I really appreciated how you summed up the one moment of peace these two have had in this entire season.

Recently, I have started wondering what are the emotions Mel dealt with after her mother told her she "weakened her." Mel seemed to decide to reject her past after that moment.
Re-seeing the facial expressions, in the scenes herein, I was able to pick up very subtle cues as to what both were going through. Great analysis, again.

Bed scene is my fav!
On the art side, I love how they managed to convey such intensity in Caitlyn's look to Vi, in a relative passive moment. Far better than any actress could achieve. On the writing side, I love how much subtext they convey in a small scene. As someone who does some music, it is a lot harder to keep a piece short and interesting, making tough choices to express what you have to than doing all variations or extending a section for too long and dilute the intention. We'd all love that scene to last much longer, have a little fade out instead of making that abrupt cut. But everything that was to be said has been said, either explicitely or implicitely. It happens a lot thtough this show, it shows rather than it tells and I find that so refreshing, especially for an animated series.
I agree, artistically, this show is next level, they make all the right choices especially by showing not telling... In a way less is more, like you say, keeping the scenes, the action and the dialogue to the minimum, they don't drag things out. And yet it's really the opposite in the animation (and perhaps the fight scenes), every image is packed with information! Like you also say, they can convey so much with facial expressions, and since it's animated, someone has spent several days on that expression, so there's nothing unintentional going on... You can interpret so, so much from so little ❤️

Maybe you can, because Elizabeth is joking here (at least partially), it's not the grand house, but the man Darcy is when they meet there (of course the ground work was laid earlier)... And the same goes for Vi, she's not impressed with the grandeur, but with what Caitlyn is and does despite of that.

I can’t believe the “Bed Scene” had more than the “Easy, Easy” scene… on Pinterest and TikTok that scene is blowing up.
Well, the bed scene is a lot longer than the easy, easy scene, so I guess that accounts for much of it? Also, what happens in the easy, easy scene is mostly unconscious, chemical reactions, very new and surprising for both of them. Whereas in the bed scene, feelings have cemented themselves and really flowered into full bloom. Also Vi's regret about Powder/Jinx looms a lot larger in the bed scene...

I've got a theory about what they were doing between that scene and the council.
Since Vi was sharing a childhood memory and Caitlyn didn't, I reckon Vi drew her out. Caitlyn then told her the story from her flashback about Grayson, which made Vi upset and she related the traumatic experience from ep 3 when Grayson was murdered a few meters from her.
This reinforces everything that happened later:
Why Vi was sad during the council meeting,
why Caitlyn said the collective "they" failed her in so many ways
why Vi during the "breakup" emphesised their class diferences cos it hurt her to realise just how different their childhoods were (she must've been also permitted to take a shower, and we all know what kind of an impression that gigantic luxurious bathroom must've left on Vi).
And it reinforces why Caitlyn asked 'what about us', since Vi expressed interest in getting to know her story.

Yours is a sweet one 😊 It’s really hard to judge which comes closest, but I give my interpretation in the video “What was the plan at the council, Caitlyn and Vi?” What I think is important to note, is that I don’t think anything important for their relationship has been left up to interpretation. If it was important, we would have seen it, heard about it, one way or another… I’m SO looking forward to more answers (and questions) in season two! 😍

Totally makes sense and appreciate the response! For Korra, yes it is subtext in the show until the end, but the books that are considered canon do expand on their relationship. There is a lot of signaling and development in the series of their relationship, but because Nickelodeon, the writers could never be totally out right until a certain part that I don't want to spoil!

Let me get the context of the "breakup" scene, Vi feels like it's love that never should have been and gives up, but Caitlyn never gave up ever (no evidence of failure YET) she feels she belongs with her-- wait a minute, I see what Vi's trying to do: she's trying to protect Caitlyn by pushing herself away (Vi feels everyone she cared had bad luck due to her actions), but that's love you would do anything for that person but sometimes that person needs YOU. Don't be worthless, you are more than what you think, Vi.
Vi definitely thinks she's undeserving of Caitlyn's affections...

How do we know nothing happened between them in the bed off screen?
We don't... What happens off screen is unknown to us viewers unless it's mentioned verbally later. So there's no evidence to unequivocally rule out that they had sex, for example. But there's no unequivocal evidence that proves they DID have sex, either... It's my interpretation, however, (and I gave evidence for this in the video) that it's extremely unlikely that they did anything more than sleep...

. . . and I find myself coming back to the vexed question of boots. Caitlyn, being a well brought up young lady, would, at the very least, remove her boots before settling down to sleep. Let's face it, she'd probably not get into bed without getting into her pjs. So what's Vi going to do at that point? I agree that they probably just went to sleep but just put yourself in their position; it's either sleep fully dressed (in someone else's clothes, in Caitlyn's case) or somehow, awkwardly, get undressed and into bed with someone you think is as hot as chops. Finally, as you lie there together, raging in mutual lust, you roll over and go to sleep.
Its 2am and I'm definitely over thinking this.
Yeah, it's a conundrum, but I think they're too exhausted to worry about decorum. Caitlyn knows propriety is not a thing for Vi, and Caitlyn is focused on giving Vi space to feel comfortable in her home. Finally safe and alone they collapse on the bed, no time to change before they fall asleep imo...

Thinking about Xena regarding your latest Video about Badass Leads, made me remember a different scene with an affectionate soul spilling caress in kind to Cait and Vi's.
The episode is "One against an army" where Xena is preparing to fend off an army because Gabrielle is sick about to die (she won't ;)) and Xena won't leave her behind - rather die together and all that subtext galore that was X:WP.

There's also light parallels in Gabrielle being the idealistic one, and Xena the one with guilt and regrets of her past (although I'm not actually comparing the two, Xena's actions in her past were monstrous, while Vi guilts herself because she believes she has failed to protect people).
I found the comparison interesting to make because of the big difference: Cait and Vi are no subtext: they look each other in the eyes and Vi unambiguously holds on on Cait's comfort and affections. They acknowledge their relationship.
Thanks for the parallel! I can't really comment, because I never watched Xena... But I agree, what is between Vi and Caitlyn isn't subtext, it's there, it's real, despite no kisses or verbal confirmation of kisses. Season 1 of Arcane didn't need that for their story, but season 2 does! We need that proper confirmation going forward in their story. But I'm 99% percent sure we'll get it. It was hard back in the day to have so many wlw stories hidden away in subtext, these days we want and deserve the whole thing, no doubts or deniability!

yep, I feel Cassandra is toast, too. I'll miss her: just with the scene where she offers to arrange the audience with the council for Cait, her character became very nuanced (storming into Cait's room with a rifle helped too xD)
The last shot of Cait's screaming face overlapped with Cassandra's made me miss her already :(
Though I don't think Cait will go on a revenge path, I feel her focus will be on the objective fact that Jinx needs to stopped - at all cost, but wishing to go for the solution that would cause Vi the less amount of pain.
Nevertheless I do hope for some buddy cop side mission where they are shown working as a team. ^.^
@@7hkey Yes, Cassandra is an interesting role, primarily as Caitlyn's mother, which the scene you reference underlines. Despite the distance between Caitlyn and Cassandra, they had just become closer (through the council situation in ep 8), and of course Caitlyn loves her mother despite their mutual animosity...
I think Caitlyn will want them to work as a team, she has the greatest chance of catching Jinx with Vi on her side. But can she overcome the guilt obstacles on both her and Vi's side? I'm hoping so, but I fear the worst... Also because Caitlyn is just human, and she can only be her fair and forgiving self for so long when Jinx not only comes between her and Vi, but also kills her mother. I've said from my first video, Caitlyn is becoming darker and more so going forward in season 2, I'm afraid 😭
Its strange finding a corner of the internet with somebody else obsessed with both pride & prejudice and arcane... They're so different but arcane makes me feel the same way as jane austens stuff. I think its the amazing complex female characters and relationships

No, I have not seen it, I find that these reviews help me avoid real stinkers (like The wRongs of Power) and since it takes a while to get the DVDs, I generally forget the spoilers by then.

I disagree that Vi could not have done anything differently. If she hadn't started that break-in in episode 1, Powder would never have come into possession of the "firts Gen Hexstones" and probably wouldn't have fueled the instability in the Undercity as the enforcers searched for the criminals behind the lab explosion. I think Vi had a significant role in all that happened and is certainly partly to blame for much of what happened after the explosion of the lab. after the first improvised "hex bomb" exploded, Powder also began to die. She had killed almost all the important people and the only remaining family (Vi) rejected her. Of course, Vi was still almost a child herself and it wasn't her fault that she was arrested before she could get Powder back. Nevertheless, she set the ball rolling, which eventually rolled over the whole undercity, and later the uppercity.
I am curious if all this will have an influence on the story of Vi and Caitlyn. Because without this fateful day, Caitlyn's mother would not have (possibly) died with other council members.
Well, yes, if you go that far back of course there are mistakes made. Vi wanted to prove herself and it failed with catastrophic results. She is carrying that guilt around the rest of her life! But Vi's intention has always been to be there for Powder. Circumstances just pushed her in certain directions, she isn't to blame for everything happening to Jinx... And most certainly this will have an influence on Vi's relationship with Caitlyn! Guilt will be a huge obstacle for them no matter what...
Vi is a hotspur. She has learned little from her mistake, despite the guilt and 7 years in prison. Sure, they probably strive for a slower character development, but the fact is, she didn't know how to deal with Powder and put her personal goals (to be respected) above (almost) everything. In the end, it came as Vander said... without meaning to and with good intentions, she lost all those who followed her and her foster father. Maybe Caitlyn can bring her under control.
@@fj1659 I agree, Vi is a punch first, ask questions later, impulsive character, who despite good intentions wreaks havoc. But her heart is in the right place, Caitlyn definitely has a positive influence on her. But the one who needs to be stopped is Jinx, imo... Vi is fallible, it would be boring if she wasn't, but Jinx is out of control, a sociopath beyond saving. Sad!
@@tildaowen You are right about Jinx. I'm curious about the Caitlyn/Vi/Jinx dynamic. In the teaser (I think Caitlyn) said that she will hunt Jinx and that she needs Vi so that there is at least a small hope that one or both of them will not die.
