30 years ago I went to see the Faberge exhibition at the V&A in London - I had never before seen total perfection. It was utterly astonishing. In the 30 years since only Kyles knives have ever evoked that same jaw-dropping awe of something more perfect than you can imagine a human producing.
If you were alive during the medieval age you would have been the king's personal armorer and blacksmith. Your skills and attention to detail are beyond imagination. Every piece is museum quality.

Several walking sticks I have carved (all so far have been made from my apple tree) often take 600 to 800 hours while only using various knives and no dremels. Instead of sandpaper I'll use metal to burnish the wood smooth, no sandpaper. Thanks for sharing your process.

@Ben Dover You have any idea how long it takes, for instance, to carve floating wood lace while still attached to the stick? Probably not, but that's ok. Some people can't know everything.
@Ben Dover I was a drywall finisher for 25 years until I fell and split vertebra. even though I received calls for nearly two years about work, I still needed to do something with my hands. I've done light carving prior to my injury I became deeply involved. I sometimes sit on a curb on my town's main street carving while drawing small crowds. Ben Dover, I was called an artist when it came to my work and it bled into my carving. The sticks are not every day sticks. They are intricate and not light as a walking stick should be. One stick started out at four and a half feet long and four inches thick. That one took around 800 hours I worked on that thing for nearly a year. And yes, not every day. The one with wood lace, among other thing had a five groove screw on the lower 40%, with a nut. That one took a bit over 600 hours. You need to remember that apple is a hard wood and I used knives, some bought, others fashioned from what I had and no actual carving tools. Someone stole my everyday stick so I now use my my first "practice" stick I carved in the '90s. I enjoy the compliments and conversations it brings. I don't get why you're such a hard time with this, unless you're simply trolling. I spoke this much because I care about what I create. Well, take care and while you'll probable add another dig, I spoke my last on this. Take care. 8 )

I haven’t the slightest clue of how you’d even learn to do this, but that is a spectacular knife and I was thoroughly amazed watching the process of it coming to life. I have been trying hard to get closer and closer to the kind of quality and beauty you produce, but every time you put out a video I realize just how far I have to go. I appreciate you sharing your methods and tips, you've created another amazing piece.
250 hours. That is likely the difference. I do historical mens tailoring and I can do "perfection" - its the difference between 100 hours on a pair of trousers and 20 hours. Its not a difference in skill [at least in what I am doing] its a difference in time. Im making a waistcoat now and the stitching is out 0.25mm on the pockets. Im making it for me to wear so that's just fine. If it were a display piece I would pick out every stitch and re do it.
I keep imagining presenting a knife like this as a gift to a medieval king, Trying to imagine the possible reactions. Amazing work! (I can't even say "as always" because you seem to level-up with every piece)

Seriously, I was thinking this is the kind of craftsmanship, time, blood, sweat and tears put into making ceremonial weapons for those of nobility and royalty. Truly a piece of art. You have such a keen eye, patience, skill and are very attentive to even the finest details. I hope to one day see this piece in a glass case where all can marvel at it in absolute mint condition and that it is rarely, if ever used for anything. I might even say you imbued something into that knife that is far more powerful and important. You put 250 hours of human life into its creation and so it is as though it is an extension of yourself, a bond if you will. It has been given a soul, a spirit. Akin to the level of craftsmanship portrayed in the Japanese legends of Masamune, who would spend years procuring a single fine blade with no imperfection and not for war, or killing because he took no thrill in this, but as an artform. This blade will cut beautifully and mindfully of what it chooses to cut and will not cut indiscriminately with no regard or respect for what it may carve.
It’s really inspiring to see such unwavering dedication to your craft. I can see that you put 100% of your self into every single step and you have obsessive attention to detail. I really appreciate that. It’s incredibly impressive. I hope someday I can afford a piece made by you Mr. Royer.

I don’t know Kyle personally, but the amount of love and time put into each one of these pieces seems to go so far beyond any desire for fame and glory. Especially given that he makes a point to reference God, I would imagine he has enough humility to recognize that even his inborn capacity to learn and apply these skills didn’t come from him as an individual. I’m sure he’s also had great teachers, and he seems to have enough wisdom to treat the craft itself as a lifelong apprenticeship - finding new challenges and creative turns along the way just for the enjoyment of it.

Most places charge at least $100/hr for a loaded shop rate. Throw in whatever extra all the premium materials cost and you’ll have an idea.
