Mate, some of us STILL use maps to plan our route!🤣 I sometimes wonder, if someone's satnav packed in, would they even know which way was North? Top tip, the map doesn't lie, so never try and "bend" the map to match where you THINK you are-sure fire way to get lost. Result with the hotel, beats camping that's for sure.
I have toured in Europe from 1975 to 2024 and only ever used maps or the sun to navigate. Up to last year, I always had big Kawasaki or BMW bikes, but this year, I used my Honda ADV350 totally re-discovered the real joy of touring. Maps, small bikes and backroads are the future for me 😎
Thanks for the comment. I was amazed actually how you can even just use the sun. You know you need to go west and you get up in the morning and ride with the sun behind you. With a place like Spain there arent that many options if you are out of the cities... I'll use a map again.
Excellent video and looks an amazing tour. Your dad is absolutely right. Everyone should learn to do that on every over land journey. The trousers are a fairly easy repair. I use contact/impact adhesive. In UK =Evostick. DE= Patex kraftkleber. NL=Bison contact kit etc. Any old bag out of similar material will make the patch.. Trim the hole up glue on both surfaces, let dry 15 minutes. Glue again and dry again. Place patch carefully in position and press down thoroughly. Been using this stuff in industry for 50+ years
I do get a little nervous tailing them too closely but at least a lorry driver is usually making smooth predictable maneuverers, you don't want to be in the outside lane with Mr BMW/Audi/Tesla slamming on the anchors and leaving a 0.5second gap 😂😂
Welcome to the "melted by exhaust" club! I've done them all: waterproofs, plastic bag, bike cover - some people never learn! Anyway, experience has at least taught me how to remove the burnt on mess. Use a 2p piece to scrape it off - the copper is softer than the chrome, so won't damage it, but makes short work of the crusty remains. Finish off with some Autosol and maybe 00 grade steel wool, if needed.
Thanks for the advice. My exhaust is now very 'weathered' I've dropped a neckscarf on the header pipe and that made a heck of a mess 😄. I've taken the trousers to a clothing alteration shop rather than buy new ones, I like those trousers 😄👍.
Well what can one say, we lived in that part of Spain for 19 years spending sort of three months of the year there firstly, then from 58 till 65 seven months of the year there,we had a house at a place called Sarceda, nr Puentenanca, it was fantastic, we had Yamaha virago 750, every sunny day was adventure, we used to go to Portugal and all over for a holiday, we kept our small terrace house in uk, but had a 3 bed finca with 4 car barn there, I recognise many of the roads you traveled so far, we came back due to my wife’s I’ll health(stroke) just as Covid first started and never returned, we have sold up there now but what great memories, we took the plunge, I was 53, took redundancy and went free lance in engineering training within the nuclear industry, so could plan the 5 months work in the uk on returning, friends thought we were mad but great memories and fantastic times and I learned to speak Spanish. Still motorcycling here in the NW morecambe bay not as much as my wife needs help usually afternoons, going to watch the rest of your tour now, NW biker dude over the hill but refuses to grow up
Great story Ted and an inspiration to others including myself. I'm not sure how much you've watched but we are looking to move out of the Midlands and struggling with Suzies health, she also needs a lot of help. Thanks for your very positive story. Regards, Sean
Great video. Really good to see a sort of 'back to basics' approach to touring, in the best possible way. Don't get me wrong, horses for courses, but a retro tour is just so brilliant. Every day is a school day as they say and you have more knowledge than what you started with. Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you Wayne for the kind comment. Can I ask your opinion? I've been debating going back to old fashioned wax canvas luggage for this retro tour endeavour Saying that the modern stuff is so convenient and you could spray a hose on the panniers and the stuff would stay dry... what do you think, stay waterproof or go retro?
@MindfulMotorcyclist it's an interesting question Sean. I think one of the big factors should also be that of security of your belongings from prying eyes and the climate, especially when out on tours. If there is a way to maximise both, then you would certainly be onto a winner. I think the canvas would certainly add to the look on the BSA though.
Sean, thanks for taking us along. Perfect empty roads with beautiful scenery, has already got me itching gor next years trip. As you know I ride a lot of the roads of Spain, Portugal and France on my 350 Meteor and have always felt totally at home avoiding main roads. Really looking forward to the next episode already 👍👍
Thanks Bob, by the way I was thinking of doing a video about touring on a BSA or Enfield, I think that would be really interesting. Avoiding main roads being the principle objective when on a lower powered machine...
I like drafting behind Waitrose wagons on the motorway, usually well driven and close to the ground so a good wind shadow! Just take a few minutes to enter the ‘zone’ then it’s a free ride for miles and miles on a slow bike!
Hi Nigel, thanks for the kind comment. Oh to be a 10th of Itchy boots would be a lifetime achievement! I hope you are well and that reminds me I must reply to your message 😄👍🙏. P.s I gave you a mention in some of the later videos, usually when I messed up my Spanglish I was thinking Nigel will know what to say here😂😂
I am as well, my Dad worked on fishing boats as a young man and I think there's something about ships that i really enjoy, for me the crossing is a big part of the experience.
The Picos second only to the alps for biking imho we loved it so much we spent 2 days just blasting around them, thanks for the memories Sian hoping for a crack at the Spanish mountains next year, riding in Europe spoils you completely, after going through that puddle ! At the hotel it sounded like your boots were full of water, great vid mate jealous, ….. Pete 🇫🇷
Thank you Pete, to be honest I was surprised by the Picos, while they are a little bit 'commericalised' I suppose compared to some of the lesser known mountains in North of Spain they are spectacular and at that time of year was super to visit, hardly any big tour groups there. I'm keeping the BSA and hope to do another tour on it, much like how you consider your classic 350!
Yes I am pleasantly surprised at how the BSA handled touring... I will be using her again for this purpose. I actually do suffer from vertigo Nigel so I wouldn't ride anything much more precarious than this. Thanks for stopping by Nigel 🙏👍
Fantastic accommodation to finish the day in. Great roads. Should be doing a similar trip myself next spring. Ferry from Ireland to Spain and then a week on the road. Should be great.
Amazing adventure Shaun, does anyone actually live in that area you seemed to have it all to yourself. Out in the wilds and you still can travel on decent roads, so different to our disgraceful roads where your just go from one set of patches to yet more patches.
Great video. The views are fantastic, I look forward to taking trips like this when the kids are a bit older, so it is good to watch yourself and others in the meantime to make my wishlist and it just goes to show, you don't have to spend a fortune on a adventure bike (though I am sure they are great) just ride the bike you love, the way you want to ride it and go prepared.👍
Thanks Steve, that's a great comment thank you kindly. I will try and keep saying out loud the road names so people can choose to put them in their own itineries if that helps... Yes ADV bikes are great but for me they are too expensive and heavy. Plus it's fun to do something that 'shouldn't' be done, take a retro bike and tour on it...
I ride a Rotax 650 engine made by Loncin in my BMW 650 X country and love riding in the Picos and Pyrenees. The puttering makes for brilliant economy and a hugely relaxed ride in the zone. Once you've experienced Northern Spain, you'll definitely want to visit again. I remain curious about the BSA and that is what brought me to your channel. Safe ride.
Thanks for the kind comment. I do actually quite fancy a BMW 650GS because of the engine... it's a nice match for the kind of riding I personally enjoy...

It doesn't work when all the lorry drivers know not to drive into the Mistral.
