    Thumbs up. That loom job is straight from general aviation. FAA approved clamps are spendy, but zip ties are approved...so lots of zip ties. Heads up: They make aviation grade zip ties. Nylon with SS jaws. You could hang a SBC from one. We charged a buck apiece when we used them, but they work great where needed. Heat wont kill them either. Google light airplane parts and supplies if interested in some great options for many things. Also many cool aviation grade stuff is now available cheaper because it's intended for experimentals, so it's not certified. Racers don't care if the FAA likes it or not. That's where the cheap plumbing stuff comes from.

    I watched a first year Mazda Rx7 get dragged down the railroad tracks. I was 17 and my cousin and I watched the whole thing. The guy had just got the car and stalled it on the railroad tracks. Why he didnt just knock it out of gear and push it off the tracks is beyond me. He may have locked the starter into the flywheel or somehow locked the transmission up. He had his motherbwith him. He pleaded to have her help him push it off but you could hear her yelling it was too late. Just so you know, the tracks were old and the top speed for that train was probably 35 MPH. It was a slow motion wreck. We sat on our bicycles watching this RX -7 being broad sided and rolled down the tracks shedding parts as it went. By the time the train stopped, that little car was cut in half. The rear end was the only thing still whole. The guy managed to save his cassette holder for his tape player. I remember him crying by the side of the road. I think he was about 23- 25 years old. He was mad at his mom( like it was her fault). I refuse to ever cross the tracks when the signal is going since seeing that.

    For the camera, get a chest mount off of eBay, they are pretty darn cheap, and i'm sure you'll find one for your camera. Try and find the ones with mounts on them, mainly because then, you can find various adapters, which allow you to move the camera around. Perfect for a one-man-show. It's the same kind of setup most survival shows on TV use for their stars.
    On the episode itself, really neatly done. Clean, nothing extra, nothing too little of. I like it.

    • @generalxanos
      @generalxanos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThunderHead289
      Roadworthy is a car that's not crimping fenders to compensate for worn out/lack of springs. I should edit that. A 5 litre v-8 is a lot heavier, so it's not worn springs or shocks causing the problem, it's not even a chopped spring lower kit, it's just all the extra weight. It needs more spring, or spring boosters to pick it's nose up. More important, a new steering gearbox so it's not randomly changing lanes because there's so much gap between rounded off teeth. (I had a pinto that was 20/40 degree from center left to right before it would respond, shoulda died driving that car. Had pvc plastic for steering gear) Basically, something that you'd be willing to drive that does 120mph and not worry that the bushings in the tie rods being so worn it wouldn't wobble off the road. Doing 1st and 2nd gear idles and donuts in the suburbs doesn't qualify as safe to drive in traffic or at speed. See my point? I'm not slamming you, that was some great work, it's just what's driveable isn't necessarily roadworthy, if you sold that to a teenager, they could kill someone, maybe themselves, maybe others. You got the engine running, but everything else? Stopped leak in the radiator, nosmoke.exe in the oil, we have to assume everything else in the car was thrashed just as badly. My biggest issue is still all that weight on a beat-up front end that could just self-destruct at any moment. How fast did you get it up to? I'd figure it'd run like a bat outta hell, so at least triple digits?

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      im with you, i didnt trust the rest of the car at those speeds, never exceeded 85, mostly just did some donuts and what not. yes that is the biggest caveat with engine swaps that i swear no one ever considers. that work was getting to intensive for me for what my intensions were with the car (get it running to see if i could, then sell it) i have 5 cars, and didnt need that one in my life. both my galaxie and f100 would melt that thing down on a drag pull. anyway, hence the name of the car in the title. seemed fitting.

  • @DM-wp9vq
    @DM-wp9vq 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Woooow, an amateur with the balls of a pro. Five things are needed for an engine to run btw, not just three. Fuel, air, compression, timing, and spark. Lubrication & cooling help keep them running. I would've changed out all fluids after getting it and correcting the blow by. Plus put in a new gas tank, new fuel filter/s (that aren't touching the valve cover *smacks forehead*) new oil filter when I changed the oil, put some Restore in the oil for the compression issues, new tranny fluid filter while I was changing the trans fluid, new spark plugs, cables, and distributor, cleaned out the carb & got a new air filter with a ram air scoop, and so on and so forth. $10k-$15k in time, care, and parts/tuning, and that car would be a supercar killer.

      @generalxanos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      drag? You mean ROAD car... You can find lots of videos of homemade and some indepent makers for "Monster Miatas", doing the same thing, 5 litre v-8s in a tiny 2-seat japomobile... kicks the back out when you want, corners like a beast, accelleration is awesome, it could be drift, but ideally a daily driver on steroids. Beat that soccer mom to the parking space kinda thing.

    Also a quick question, if you tried using some fuel additives, like either octane boost for high perf cars, or some lead additive for lead-burning engines, do you think you could resurrect the fuel that's in the tank that's been standing for ages?

    • @strawsparky33
      @strawsparky33 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      no cause the chemical structure of the gas changes over time. he said it was lacquered already, gas basically turns into varnish. and theres no way to resurrect that gas other than to strain or filter out what has already lacquered. and varnish is basically an oily brownish black grease left over from gas thats totally evaporated and dried away

    • @generalxanos
      @generalxanos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got it, but if you say, get a bunch of the varnish, scrape it off, dump it in some pure alcohol or paint stripper, it should dissolve, and discolor the alcohol. Sort of "rehydration" but alcohol/oil based, if you see what I mean. If you dump enough (exxon calls it detergent, lol) fuel through it, it should be able to ablate the sticky surfaces, as I understand it. Even a long soak in really dirty used motor oil should be able to soften some of it up.

    @16:19, have you ever worked on cars in the alaskan wilderness? You exposed our secret (who needs a rag wrapped around the screwdriver?) tool for removing stuck oil filters. It's kind of hard to see, but is the exhaust smoke blue or white? I'm assuming we're looking at a head gasket if it's also escaping around the heads, not bad rings. I've got a steamer '76 C-10 stepside right now, a leak in one head gasket that's letting water into one cylinder, and some seepage out the head, but it's white, not blue/black. I'm surpised with the stuck needle that so much gas got into the oil, the carb doesn't hold that much, does it? Or would it be because the previous owner kept trying to start it, pressurizing the fuel, then let it sit when the batt died repeatedly?

    Man, what a pile!😜 I guess you got your $1000 worth with a rolling chassis anyway. That 302 needs some serious help, and if you actually do build a performance motor for it, it would probably be a good idea to find a good SBF C6 that you could build along with it to handle the horsepower.😉

    Arkansas has had ethanol gas since the 70's... I am *so* sick of having to tear apart fuel systems for everything from lawnmowers to weedeaters and leafblowers and generators just because you can't leave any gas in them for a month before they varnish everything in a protective goop. We should use that on mothballed warships, they'd never rust.

    If I remember what Dad told me back in high school, I think that the 351 Windsors block is only half an inch or an inch longer then the 302 and I believe he said an inch taller. Although I may be wrong, but if I'm right you might be able to put that 351 Windsor out of the van into the Mazda.
