Absolutely love this 2 stroke exercise of genius. If you’d like to shift the transmission while you’re driving a dog box conversion would be pretty easy for that 5 speed, pretty much just a slick shift setup like you’d do a Muncie, A-833, Toploader or T-10 trans. Heck,if you shop around there are plenty of those RX7 or RX8 transmissions around from the road course guys that have those trans faceplated. If you want to shift it at wide open throttle after either of those mods just add a strain gauge on the shifter wired to a timer that kills the ignition for a few milliseconds and you’re in business. With those updates you can take of in any gear and up shift at wide open all the way to fifth. 👍

I don't see too many of these vintage RX7's around my area, so when something like this is sitting in a parking lot come summer time I like to take pics. So hopefully you don't hack it up too much. Would it be possible to fix the expansion chamber so it's not doing such a sever 90-degree turn? I haven't had too many snowmobiles myself so I'm not familiar with all the engines. If this thing has reeds in it and not some weird power-valve setup like in the Rotax engines you might be able to get some more go out of it by putting some performance reeds in it. Also get yourself some Dyna-Mat or something similar by any maker and do up the inside panels of the car. It'll help big time with soaking up your vibration problem. If it works for subwoofers it should help with this. :)
having helped rebuild and work on rotary engiens many times over the years thanks to friends who are into such things, they can be incredibly reliable given you treat it right and understand what your using.... honestly, the rx7's engines can be quite impressive, and, i have seen well treated ones go over 100k miles without a rebuild, (those also were given the oiler mod so proper oil for buring could be used rather then oil pan oil, thats designed not to burn and often leave deposits or fed with mixed fuel with 2 stroke oil already in it.. outside that... just understand what you own and how to treat it... for all the shade people throw... they can be alot of fun.
I've always been a fan of rotaries the way they run and drive is incomparable to any other car, most people who throw shade have never even sat in a rotary car and its sad to see people jump on the hate band wagon just because everyone else is, these engines don't deserve the hate they get and i hope someday that will change
Agreed, I hate when people claim rotaries "aren't reliable".... literally one of the most reliable and simple engines there are, people just don't know how to use or maintain them thinking they're a piston engine.
Auston did an amazing job building it! I love it. Yea maybe try to rubber mount the powertrain, and put a headliner in it...... You referred to it as the "Thing" a few times.... what a fitting name!
This was one of the best videos! If you don't get over a million views on this I will be shocked! Only things I would definitely change is it's almost a necessity that you got to have some rubber motor mounts. And I would probably try to rework the exhaust that way it's a little more free-flowing. And then if it's carbureted definitely a jet kit in the future. If it's EFI definitely a tune. Either way this was such a bad ass video, absolutely made my day too!
Absolutely hilarious! 🤣 Am more than a little disappointed that you guys didn't try to do *something* with the snow around the parking lot. I mean, come on, a snowmobile powered RX7 on snow tires? But am sure it'll snow in Ames again soon, if it hasn't already since this was recorded, and things will be set right. 😉
Extremly cool build! 2-Stroke motors rock. To put an exclamation point on that recoil starter, use a longer rope and run the pull handle to outside the body. Aftermarket stinger type mufflers would quiet it down. Way back when, in snowmobile speed runs, people were using V-6 2-stroke outboard motors. These can easily be modified to over 250 H.P. or left stock. Yea right...
So funny to see the RX7 but then hear this Snowmobile sound to it 😂😂Reminds me on my Trabant but this RX is waaay louder, faster and cooler 😄👌🏽 I would call it The Bone Shaker
Of all the ridiculous things you guys have ever bought this is probably the most awesome! You definitely need to race it somewhere. Might be fun to fix the hard mounts on the engine so the NVH scores somewhere below 50 on a scale of 1 to 10.
This is such a cool car engine swap. Would be a cool idea to see John from Golden rust or bust have a crack at driving it. He may also be down to help with it if he has time too. Can't wait to see what you get upto with the grand prix's in the spring.

What a bloody amazing conversion. I already watch Steve’s channel and he seems absolutely normal in there. But it’s good to see that his mad streak is there too. Or is that only accessible when he is with you guys? 😂 Excellent!
Adapt a flywheel on the engine and do the gearbox plate to mount the engine in place. Should be much more fun with all the gears and rubber mounts. And do a new exhaust routed nicely to get rid of the hump in the hood (along with the engine mounted lower)
@@zeanyt2372 but cvt has about 30% power losses. Add 30% to the figures they got on the dyno and it is much more respectable. With a bit of tuning and a better exhaust it could be a little monster
@@ChopShopGarage you basically lose the power band though. The clutches keep the engine in power band where it makes the most horsepower. Without the clutches it won’t make enough power fast enough to get much speed.
@@benmuckenhirn8921 that is true, nothing a supercharger can’t sort 😁😁😁. It won’t become unusable without a cvt, it will just want to be kept at high revs to be kept on power and. And the power and can be tuned with a exhaust done for the rev range wanted.
A snowmobile engine doesn't have the required thrust bearing surface inside the engine to be able to deal with the pressures involved with an automobile clutch. The bottom end of the motor wouldn't last long like that.
You should for sure bring it to a rallycross. Also: I wanted to see Kevin try to sit in the Barkley, guessing he probably wouldn't fit, that thing is tiny, have seen it in person.
This is a really creative idea with some excellent execution. That being said, as a fan of the rotary and especially the 1st gen RX7, this hurts me a bit.
Same here, while the car looks pretty fun and took some creative design to execute, it once again hurts the RX-7s and reinforces the reputation that these cars in their stock form are "waiting to blow up" and that the car itself is "only for for swapping something better in" even if its an objectively worse engine, i love these cars and the rotaries but they are very misunderstood and while i love engine swaps i would prefer to see MORE rotary swaps instead of rotary replacements
I’ve wanted to build a simple carbureted 2 stroke powered first gen rx7 since my teens, when I first saw this vid I almost creamed myself, the only problem is it uses a cvt. I really wanted to hear it rev up through the gears
This has got to be one of the best cars you guts have found yet! It would be awsome to try and add a second snowmobile engine to up the speed, and tie it in so they can both be run at once. Looking forward to seeing how this creation turns out as you guys tinker around with it.
I'm kind of in love with the self supercharging expansion pipe CVT snowmobile power train setup. It makes so much power for its weight and it always stays in powerband. I would love to see a car sized scaled up powertrain made the same way. Maybe a 2.0L at least, ideally 3 or 4L so you can really rip.
@@christofferniemonen8872 As far as I'm aware the large 2 stroke boat motors are all non-expansion pipe designs. You can convert them maybe with some skill and fabrication, but when it's factory made it almost is always built and tuned better than somebody modifying the design themselves after the fact.
"Self supercharging"? An expansion pipe has nothing to do with boost in the intake system. The reflected wave from the chamber simply prevents escaping fuel/air from flowing right out the exhaust port. Just about exactly opposite from a Supercharger.
I can’t believe how fast it is! Seems like this might be a viable swap option if a little more effort was put into dealing with the vibrations and noise. I used to have a 1981 Mazda RX-7 and I put a 1.6 Subaru boxer engine in it, unfortunately I never completed the swap.

Just the idea of having a pull start engine makes me want to build one
Until you stall the engine in a busy tunnel
@@oi32dfCan't stall a CVT though!
What an unbelievable concept. I believe this could truly be improved on a level that most people aren't even thinking of
Absolutely epic! It needs a pull start extension to a handle in the dashboard! Maybe throw the snowmobile single headlight into the front grill! Keep doing what you do!
Have you ever smiled for 35 minutes straight? Well I just did!! Even though this wasn't a will it run type of video this was amazing to see. Please keep up with the new and different content! I can't wait to see what's coming next.
Mazda Rx800
Thats unfair timing
Long time watcher, first time caller... fellow Iowan from Decatur county. I've lived in Georgia since 2014, your videos remind me of home. I just have to mention I just absolutely love the relationship you and mook have! She's a hell of a woman! I wish my wife would get as excited about a car as I do. But mine always supports me and the stupid purchases I've made! She never makes feel guilty when it enevedly ends up being a horrible purchase 🤣🤣🤣
Keep advancing the build. It’s a great start to something even more awesome.
Ski Doo had a snowmobile that was Silver and its name was "silver bullet". I think that would be a good name for this "Silver Bullet" . 👍
The Silver Bullet Ear Bleeder!
Silver Mullet?
This thing is so epic!!!!!
😂 that thing is amazing. Nice score
I've never laughed so hard as when you took it for the initial cruise, that car is something else! Love it!
The smile on Mook face on that first ride just priceless Kevin @Junkyard Digs
Auston did an amazing job building it! I love it. Yea maybe try to rubber mount the powertrain, and put a headliner in it...... You referred to it as the "Thing" a few times.... what a fitting name!
I like that when the RX7 does a J-Turn or burnout the closed captioning says [Applause]
I think it's just saying what we all are thinking. Lol
CC is constantly telling the deaf that there's a party going on. Most beginnings of videos contain applause, even when nothing is happening.
7:10 is such a bro moment, “do she spin em?” “oh yeah” 😂😂
Men
Oh yeah.
BRAAAHAAABAAARAAAH
Absolutely hilarious! 🤣 Am more than a little disappointed that you guys didn't try to do *something* with the snow around the parking lot. I mean, come on, a snowmobile powered RX7 on snow tires? But am sure it'll snow in Ames again soon, if it hasn't already since this was recorded, and things will be set right. 😉
A muffler would probably be a good addition.
It already has two 😂
no. no it would not
What's that? Cut the mufflers out?
What it needs is a tuned pipe for each cylinder. Tuned for top end..
Dynamat. Lots of dynamat.
You need to make a video of taking that to a Mazda dealer. Possibly asking them why it's so loud or hard starting just to see their reactions.
This is a god tier idea
This opens up a whole genre for builds . Imagine what could be done , a hybrid possibly, electric /snowmobile powered .
The 300SX mercury optimax is a 60 deg v6 193 CID!
Evinrude 2 stroke V8 had 300hp stock - double what this RX7 has
That is one of the coolest builds I have ever seen.
A girlfriend that actually ENJOYS driving this car rather than yelling at you for bringing the thing home? Now THAT’S what I call a catch!
So funny to see the RX7 but then hear this Snowmobile sound to it 😂😂Reminds me on my Trabant but this RX is waaay louder, faster and cooler 😄👌🏽
I would call it The Bone Shaker
Of all the ridiculous things you guys have ever bought this is probably the most awesome! You definitely need to race it somewhere.
Might be fun to fix the hard mounts on the engine so the NVH scores somewhere below 50 on a scale of 1 to 10.
This is such a cool car engine swap. Would be a cool idea to see John from Golden rust or bust have a crack at driving it. He may also be down to help with it if he has time too. Can't wait to see what you get upto with the grand prix's in the spring.
For the winter time, I guess you would take off the tires and put skies on.😆😂🤣
Oh man this thing is awesome. I’ve always had a fantasy about putting a Polaris XLT engine in a Geo Metro with expansion chambers sticking out of the hood.
What a bloody amazing conversion.
I already watch Steve’s channel and he seems absolutely normal in there.
But it’s good to see that his mad streak is there too.
Or is that only accessible when he is with you guys? 😂
Excellent!
whats his channel?
what’s the channel
This week with cars
I'd attach the engine to the transmission like you talked about then I would try to quieten it down without restricting the exhaust .
But it's not at all loud.
Adapt a flywheel on the engine and do the gearbox plate to mount the engine in place. Should be much more fun with all the gears and rubber mounts. And do a new exhaust routed nicely to get rid of the hump in the hood (along with the engine mounted lower)
The CBT has a bit of a Freewheel mechanism. So all you have to do rev down and shift, like rev matching.
I want to see this thing on Mattracks. Possibly more than I've ever wanted anything before in my life.
Tracks on the back, skis in the front and send it on snow or a frozen lake!
Crazy ride, the look at her face first time riding it😁
I'm in Ukraine and your videos are distracting me from all the shit going on. Thank you!
Stay safe friend.
Wishing the best for you friend, stay safe
I should think it would be more interesting looking out your window right now.
Stay safe bud
Stay safe my friend. God be with you.
I love how Mook holds on to the door handle the whole time!😂
With the 2 transmissions I bet with good rev matching this could be a beast.
Do the motor mounts and try to make it somewhat more driveable.
This is a really creative idea with some excellent execution. That being said, as a fan of the rotary and especially the 1st gen RX7, this hurts me a bit.
Tbh you still get the general brappiness and it’s way faster
Same here, while the car looks pretty fun and took some creative design to execute, it once again hurts the RX-7s and reinforces the reputation that these cars in their stock form are "waiting to blow up" and that the car itself is "only for for swapping something better in" even if its an objectively worse engine, i love these cars and the rotaries but they are very misunderstood and while i love engine swaps i would prefer to see MORE rotary swaps instead of rotary replacements
It’s the one engine swap that makes more blue smoke and obnoxious noises than a rotary… I love it.
I’ve wanted to build a simple carbureted 2 stroke powered first gen rx7 since my teens, when I first saw this vid I almost creamed myself, the only problem is it uses a cvt. I really wanted to hear it rev up through the gears
@@motoredbikemadness2061if you take out the cvt and make it use a clutch it'll work
or you can directly connect it and rev match every time you shift
This has got to be one of the best cars you guts have found yet! It would be awsome to try and add a second snowmobile engine to up the speed, and tie it in so they can both be run at once. Looking forward to seeing how this creation turns out as you guys tinker around with it.
7:08 this moment was absolute gold lmao what a perfect question to ask
You've basically bought John's dream car 😂
I'm kind of in love with the self supercharging expansion pipe CVT snowmobile power train setup. It makes so much power for its weight and it always stays in powerband. I would love to see a car sized scaled up powertrain made the same way. Maybe a 2.0L at least, ideally 3 or 4L so you can really rip.
Much as was done with the Rudezon…
@@dennisyoung4631 Yes but I would like to see even more
You could use a boat motor!!
Why the hell would you put a subaru engine in a rx7 you compketely devalued it and made it slower.
@@alastairdow-taylor4103 The car was pretty much worthless at the time and the engine fit easily and was available to me.
@@alastairdow-taylor4103 and less reliable lmao
Did you run premix in tge rotary or used stock oil injection. I run nothing but amsoil interceptor 2 stroke oil in my rotary. Not 10w30 4 joke junk.
😂 "I can't feel my legs"...
All the hard mounts. 😂
-and I love it!
Heads up if you want those transmissions to last you need to change ge the fluid filter and put in a shift kit to give it some hope
The 4t65e-HD is glass and so is the non hd
Bottom end on the motor is good for about 500 hp
name it "the yetti " or the "abominable snow car" , you have out done yourself.
I like Yetti
RXsleddin
What's better than one snowmobile engine?.................... two snowmobile engines.
Mook makes this upload ,those facial expressions are GOLD
thats a pretty insane build ! .... but the question is : how fast can it go in reverse ? 😆
Well it’s lot better than all the LS swapped ones
TOO MUCH LS SWAPPING!!!! where are all the BLU BLOOD FORD SWAPS????
@@alexmikhael5061 they don’t fit anywhere lol
@@theeoddments960 not tru, IT IS JUST EASIER TO SLAP A LS IN!!!! ANY THING WILL FIT with a GOOD FABRICATOR!!! :)
DEMORANCH put a 12v cummins in a freeking CHARGER or wutever.... yea, don't go tellin me ya can't fit a coyotee in ;) things have to be MOVED and REENGENERRED is ''all'' lol ;) .......my prob is TOO MANY PEOPLE TAKE THE EASY ROUTE AND TRANSPLANT ORANGE BLOOD INTO BLU BLOOD SYSTEMS :) LOL
@@alexmikhael5061 No. The LS is a MUCH more compact package than the ford junk. If there isn't enough room, there isn't enough room. Period. Stuffing 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound sack isn't an elegant solution.

the way he responds "oh yeah." in that tone and then just absolutely rips a donut into a burnout
Mazda rx800 my 5th dream car, I hope I find one to rebuild
Haha
Stop bieng mean angus
Not gonna lie, it makes me sad anytime somebody does an engine swap to a 80s or 90s JDM car, especially with a Rx7 and 300ZX(there is just not nearly enough of them around that's stock anymore), but holy shit I laughed super loud when I saw him pull start the engine the first time.
I do hope you put a rotary engine back in there though. The Rx7 is a legend and deserves to be preserved in its full glory.
If it's any consolation, that 800 is a Suzuki, built in Japan.
@@82f100swb I don't know man, it still feels like putting a Polaris snowmobile engine in a Buick Grand National.
Idk, I guess I'm a sucker for seeing special cars, like the RX7, stock and many JDM cars of the 80s and 90s have been just hacked up.
Plus, the more you think about it, the more genius this idea is! With the high revs and high gearing of a rotary, a 2-cycle is the perfect swap!
The fact that it's pull start makes it RULE !! That is so cool. When he said it only took him a week and a half to build this I was surprised. To me, that's FAST. Man, that car gets 1000 smiles to the gallon.
4:35 that laugh gets funnier each time, so full of joy. Sounds like Rex tripping pistachio in the restaurant on master of disguise.
Cheers to you Mr. snowmobile RX7 builder! this is awesome
