I love how you describe the beginnings of the painting as the “Teen” look. I watch videos of pastel paintings and wonder about them until a little past the halfway part and then magic seems to happen! Thank you for this wonderful and generous beginner tutorial❣️
Wonderful person you are Susan and such a great teacher...stay blessed..as a beginner who is also short on money totally regard such an amazing art lessons... keep bringing the amazing content..love ya
Loved this demonstration. I have struggled with pastel , and now see how I had applied it too thickly trying to blend it. That made it dull. This is so vibrant.
I know what you mean about blending into mud. I have trouble knowing when to blend and when to just leave the marks alone. I am thankful for generous teachers (such as Susan) willing to share their knowledge to keep the motivation and learning progress going. I love blending and layering but it can get out of control for me sometimes. I am having fun but I know it takes practice and good teachers.
Hallo Susan, i’m from the Nederlands, and i love youre dicribing of pastel paintngs very mutch. The way you Choose youre coulors and explaine how to build the painting in layers is clear and a great help. I’m also left handed, I dont see that often and it makes it easy for me to work with tis material. Its a great learning process for me! I learn a lot from You. My I thank you for all youre expertise and youre work for those great you tube films.
Another one I love. The colours are so vibrant and harmonious whilst exciting ... reminds me of The Fauves. Thank you so much, Susan. You are a great tutor x

Hi Susan thanks for posting M watching this lovely Nd detailed video I was hoping for this gift Nd I guess u have it to me Thanks Love from India ❤️ Stay safe and inside
I LOVE this!! Thank you so much for your encouragement--I can't tell you how many times I've started a painting and abandoned it because I thought it was "ugly." Other take aways for me on this one were using more vertical strokes in the foreground, horizontal in the distance. Genius! Also, your light touch is such a good reminder. I'm going to try this one!
Yep, I've just turned 50, my pastels & art education are now 10 years old, I am burnt out from my career in the 'caring industry' and am virtually unemployable these days ... And so here I am!!! It's time to create and I am so happy to have found your channel. Your videos are very inspiring and not intimidating 💖🕊️🌈
Love your attitude!!! and thanks for those kind and helpful words. It's your turn now for giving yourself some artistic fun! Enjoy and I'll be certain to have lots more videos coming your way.
I have used Gioconda only and really liked them. But there are other good sets out there too. I hear many artists say that Carbothello pastel pencils are really good too.
Have you ever tried using clear gesso a second time once the tooth starts to become filled with dust/pastel in order to build more layers? (before too much pastel is applied where it would just spread the pastel if too much is on the surface?
@Nazareth434! I haven't, but I don't think it would work out very well. The gesso would most likey just smear and muddy your pastels. What I suggest is using a pray fixative to be able to achieve more layers. Happy painting!
OMG! I have no idea how you came up on my feed! But this looks stunning! Would this work with Gouache? I'm not sure I can justify running out to buy a set of Pastels!!!!! Someone - please save me from temptation!
chaserkitty I actually don’t think you would need to add the clear gesso at all when using gouache, unless you’re just want the texture. And I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. I give it a try on a small sample piece. And be careful… Because if you do buy some pastels it can become very addicting. Ha ha
At the end of the video, the painting looks more natural, because of the green color. How did you achieve the grassy effect? i missed that part. any way, it turned out. good enough to sell, or frame! idea! scrape the grassy area with a clean kitchen scrub pad? or a stencil knife?
I can't remember which brands I used for this painting, but here is a link to my Amazon shop where I give lots of pastel recommendations... amzn.to/3GaN8RB
Dear Susan, If I buy some clear gesso do I also need Fine Pumice Gel to mix in? Or will the gesso work on its own? Also, does the gesso feel similar to uart 400 grit paper? Thanks in advance :)
Daryl TJ Even though some people do mix some find Thomas into the clear gesso, it’s not necessary. Most of the tutorials I have shared is just the clear gesso alone. And it does feel similar to U 400 grit paper but it’s not quite as smooth. I’m people apply to layers for more texture and then use a sheet of fine sandpaper to sand it down for a smoother surface. Hope that helps and I recommend experimenting on some small sample pieces first.
As a right handed person my pastel স্ট্রোক are north east to south west Do most left handed people use north west to south east strokes? After a soft pastel painting is over, everything gets smudged, living in India, I cannot source best art material s but could you recommend anything?
I have some different types of painting canvases that I have used for acrylic painting. Can I use them to do Pastel painting? they are grainy and have texture so I was thinking that they can be used. Anyone know?
Hi Daivd, I've tried painting on canvas before with pastels and even though I like texture, it has more to do with the "grit" than the "texture" when it comes to painting with pastels. I found the surface of the canvas was actually too slick even though it is made up of a woven type of pattern. You might be able to coat it with some clear gesso (which has a gritty result when dry). Regular gesso doesn't have this grit to it though... only the clear. ;). Now, I'm going to have to try it!
My art journey began just 2 years ago when a friend I was visiting was teaching some water colour classes in the coastal park in Folkestone. She insisted I go along even though I was adamant I couldn’t draw a straight line with a ruler let alone draw a picture. She was kind enough not to make me do watercolours but provided me with sketch book and a basic set of graphite pencils. Most of what I did from that day went in paper recycling lol, but I noticed that during the three hours I sat drawing, I lost myself in what I was doing and didn’t once think about my pain. (I have a degenerative spine disorder) so I decided to continue as a form of pain management. I have since exhibited graphite and charcoal works, oils, acrylics and watercolour pieces locally and sold some😱. Things are getting motor difficult moving about now and the cleaning of brushes using oils and acrylics is sometimes just too much so here I am….first bash at pastels but I figured the only thing I need worry about washing at the end….is me😂😂😂😂. I have joined your Patreon group and Monet Cafe on Facebook too, so let’s do this and see what mess I can create with dust😂😂😂. Thank you 🙏 so much for your time and energy, I for one definitely appreciate being able to learn at home rather than all the commotion that is required to get out and travel. God bless and hope to chat soon. Grant Harper, Worcestershire, UK
Grant, this is such a fantastic comment! I was hanging on every word and truly relating to your journey. It’s amazing how art can bring us peace and be so therapeutic. Keep it up my friend and I loved what you said about only washing yourself off after using pastels. That is so true! God bless you and thank you so much for becoming a patron of mine. I sent you a welcome letter that you probably got, But don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

I have used Gioconda only and really liked them. But there are other good sets out there too. I hear many artists say that Carbothello pastel pencils are really good too.
Loving your tutorial. Would really appreciate it if you could position your ref photo so that we can see it as you're laying in the color. Thanks.
