As part of every oil change in my cars, I replace the ps fluid from the reservoir. Might not be a complete flush but let it circulate and replace it again abt 3 times. Keeps the fluid fresher and better than not having it replaced at all. Super easy too, no need to remove return lines which could introduce leak on the hose.
My mechanic has been telling me that my 2011 ES350 rack has been leaking for years but I have never seen a drop on my garage floor! You might have just saved us a $2k repair bill for a not serious problem. Thank You!
Took my 04 AVY to dealer for alignment two days ago. After completion, they told me there was leak in R&P and showed me picture of wet boot covered with fluid on the passenger side. They quoted me about $1700 for the R&P replacement together with two outer tie rods. I checked all my fluid regularly and the power steering fluid had been good all along. Really didn’t expect this. With the information from you, sounds like mine is not an imminent problem and requires me to cough out $1700 right away. I will monitor that fluid reservoir more closely and make sure its level is right. Thanks much CCN. You let me know what needs immediate attention and what is tolerable for now. Very helpful.

I have a 2005 Tundra with 250k miles and have had to replace torn boots but still on the original rack, the driver side has a very small leak, but I feel way better with you saying not to worry about it unless it’s leaking out every time I start the truck. My dad was a Toyota master tech for 20 years and told me something similar but I kinda questioned it, turns out I should have just listened to my dad 😂 And also, the I just replaced rack bushings and sway bar bushings and you are not lying about how much steering slop I had before! I didn’t even realize it and got used to it, but after putting in the new bushings my steering is so much tighter.
Recently had my 180k mile 2013 4Runner at a shop to have the front end checked, upper and lower ball joints, tie rods, and bushings are all tight. I thought I was going to have to replace some stuff, but the tech brought me in the garage and showed me everything was tight.

I always put it of thinking I haven’t gotten a ticket for 40 years and no accidents either. Anyway Toyta just kept sending me letters and I finally got it done ✅. I had 200k miles on my 97 Avalon and original ball joints. I was amazed by that too haha. The control arm bushing where it attached to the subframe did go bad, but it just wiggled. This was after about 150k miles, so I guess it was acceptable haha. The rear toe adjustment rod bushings also went out twice in 200k miles. The thing that killed that car was getting rear ended on the highway, otherwise i'd still have it. Was a great car and in great condition.
My first time dealing with an outer tie rod replacement was on my 93 Toyota pickup V6, at 390k miles… I had to learn the removal tricks quickly, it fought me for a solid day. After letting it soak in PB Blaster overnight, it finally broke free while hammering the side of the steering knuckle. The relief I felt when it popped was something I’ll never forget. I loved that truck, but all those emission lines were a PITA…
Most wonderful thing about Toyota that I am aware of is how easy it is to access things under the hood. I have had cars where I need to take out the engine to get to the water pump (PT Cruiser). If you change the oil regularly, your Toyota will last until your next car.
My 2000 Camry ps leaks were rusting return line only .Easily repaired all else OK.I am amazed how well tie rods and ball joints have held up for over 400K .Thanks for your honest opinion .

I've just replaced my inner and outer tie rods on a 2000 Tacoma 4x4. Normally for lower ball joints, I buy oem no matter what price, but oem inner tie rods are 4x more expensive and outter tie rods are 7x more expensive than aftermarket. I got Sankei 555 made in Japan for inner. If they last several years, that's pretty good to me bc I can replace them myself. The tie rods are very easy to replace with proper tools and I always enjoy wrenching on my car.
I have a 2000 Camry needed to replace the ps belt.I priced it at Napa 28 bucks ,factory belt at Toyota was 13 bucks .In the same vane I needed a rocker cover gasket it was 10 bucks cheaper at Toyota.It can't be stressed enough always check the dealers first.The quality is the best
Power steering fluid from the toyota factory is just cheap hydraulic fluid with no additives to decrease production costs. Toyota recommends you refill with Dexron II/III ATF because it has detergents and seal conditioners that maintain the system long term. If they would have used atf from the factory in those Siennas, the racks would have lasted a lot longer. I recommend that everyone use a decent atf for the power steering so they never have to replace any steering componets.
I totally agree with you. I have a Fortuner with only 10k miles and replace the PS fluid myself with amsoil atf dex 3. the old fluid that I managed to catch in a plastic bottle from the return line, that I removed from the reservoir, had some kind of black debris (more like sand). So, I'd suggest replace the fluid with a good quality dex 3 atf and just treat the factory fluid as a break-in fluid if you would. the steering feel after the replacement is awesome btw.
I put dex vi in my old camry and it had issues especially in the cold. Switched to power steering fluid from the parts store and it was a massive improvement. Not sure if I am going to try atf again that didn't work out so good.
@@lejoshmont2093 Dexron II/III is a completely different fluid from Dexron VI. VI is a low viscosity ATF almost identical to WS and should never be used as PS or hydraulic fluid.
First generation tacoma's rack bushings go out fast. All of the first gens. Took 3 years for me to go through 2 bushing sets. Then i bought after market & they lasted until a year ago.
I remembered my 1998 Sienna has rack and pinion leak and the dealer quoted me around $3000 (part and labor) back in 2007 so I opted not to replace it and traded the 1998 Sienna for the 2007 Sienna which I still own today as of 09/21/22. Finger cross, the 2007 steering rack hasn't leak yet.

Hi, Thanks for this channel, you have seriously saved my butt a few times. Now I have just dropped $1500 on replacing the Power steering pump and the left and right Axel seals. All of the sudden the night I took the car home (2008 Sienna LE), It had an even worse leak than before. Today the garage looked at it and said the PS rack was leaking, they showed me that it had a substantial amount of fluid all over the boot. Of course they didn't say it was leaking when they diagnosed the two seals and the pump. Fishy.. He poked a small hole in the boot and said fluid was escaping through the hole. My reservoir under the hood is not so low. I figure that I will just fill it when needed. But I wondered what do you think? Should I replace the whole rack now? Great and very informative video. The issue I have must not be very common since you have not mentioned it. 2013 Sienna with electric PS. The alignment shop told me my inner and outer tie rods are bad on passenger side. I had hard time believing both are bad. When I raised the car to check, neither are bad but the play is in the rack. the main shaft has front to back play on the passenger side only, making it look as if there is play in the tie rods. Thanks for all the tips. I have an 04 Camry with 70k that recently developed a steering problem. There's virtually no power steering when turning to the right. I work at a Honda dealer and had a tech look at it. He saw some leakage from the pump and said that must be it. Did the pump, didn't fix it. I keep seeing the steering intermediate shaft coming up as a problem. Does it sound like that might be it?
You are right on the money at 7:55!! I have a 2004 Sienna with a leaking power steering rack. I just had the steering pump and Resvoir replaced last month. But I've been having steering problems and it's indeed the rack. I will choose to buy the original oem part from the dealer that's $703. Question is: once I replace it, do I need to replace it again in the future?

My moms 98 Corolla had the ps rack leaking a bit. The reservoir would get low like every 3 months or so. Id laugh when my daughter would ride in the Corolla when ps fliud low n say- Dad, grandmas car sounds like Chewbacca again. 😄

@@TheCarCareNut nope, no roughness on the road I drive the highway is smooth 30 miles to work and 30 miles back home, when turning the wheels I don't reach the end of steering tires filled with nitrogen to 35 no more no less, it hit me when that guy told me I needed alignment with new tires, I haven't missed a check with the dealership, very strange situation, oh, also no curb scratches on the rims, very strange, I'm asking, just for personal information, you seems like a confidence guy that can be ask, Thank You for your support...🙂🤙
If you’re putting new tires on the car perhaps it’s not a bad idea to check the alignment but I would look at the old tires that you are replacing if they’re worn evenly likely your alignment is good. I wouldn’t pay too much for an alignment if you end up doing it
2006 Sienna that did just that, slowly filling up a boot with fluid, then leaking a few drips before the boot cracked more and lost all the fluid in there at once. But the reservoir level is doing fine....because it took 15 years to lose that much. You didn't mention fluid type. It sounds like something that helps cause this leaking is that the PS System doesn't actually want PS Fluid. At least in this Sienna, the manual states to use ATF. It could be that the previous owner, a shop, or even myself topped it off with PS fluid. Luckily a fluid replacement is easy, even as a one person job but especially if you have a second person. You basically just take out all of the old fluid from the reservoir that you can and top off with new fluid, pull the return line and put the return into a different clear container, and then turn on the system and turn the steering wheel back and forth a few times. Keep the reservoir filled up so it doesn't get any air bubbles in the system, and you're ready to reconnect the return line once you see fresh fluid come out. It really is a 5 minute task, but if the fluid doesn't look bad then even once every 100k is likely plenty often.

It’s electric power steering. I check the parts on Toyota website. Seems the picture shows hydraulic power steering rack. Also I checked the parts on eBay. Some sellers say their parts fit 2013-2018 rav4. Some say fitting 5th letter of F on vin number, some say fitting 5th J on vin. Could you please clarify a little bit more about the part? Hi CCN, I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 2010 Toyota Sequoia with 100K miles and would like to refresh the power steering fluid using a baster to remove the fluid and refresh a few times, which will require 3 or 4 quarts I'm guessing. In your video, you recommend using power steering fluid over ATF fluid as the ATF has additives that are unnecessary for power steering...makes total sense. I'd like to avoid using the expensive Toyota power steering fluid, but Advance Auto, Napa and Amazon all recommend ATF fluid. Amazon also recommends generic Prestone power steering fluid. The Prestone web site recommends either the Prestone Power Steering Fluid + Stop Leak generic (price is reasonable by the quart but does not say Dextron III anywhere) or their Asian vehicle version (which is only sold in 12 ounce bottles, does not mention Dexron III and is ridiculously expensive). I love your channel but I can't find a reasonably priced power steering fluid that I know for certain is compatible and relatively inexpensive! Please help!
I have a Toyota Tundra 2021 and I clearly see that there is not an ATF inside the system. It is some kind of yellowish or amber color fluid - definitely power steering fluid. So I wonder wish one should I add??? I used to have the same situation in my Toyota Avalon 2008 where according to manual it was also saying that ATF is the correct fluid. After I added it it cost me $1000 in repair to replace p/s pump and a pressure hose. Now I have no desire to add ATF

Thank you for watching my video. You can use Dex atf. I would however use any fluid labeled as power steering as it has a specific additive package for power steering. At the dealership they usually use generic power steering fluid that’s compatible.
This was my exact question. There’s a lot of conflicting opinions relating to whether to use basic power steering fluid vs ATF (owner’s manual suggests dexron II or III). The parts dept at my local dealer said they usually just go with power steering fluid. Any recommendations on brand of power steering fluid? Synthetic or non-synthetic Thanks
@@sigurdthehusky4059 my personal experience is do not use dex vi that caused problems. I flushed the system with non-syntheic prestone with NO stopleak and that made it work a lot better. If you are going to change it every 50k you will probably be fine with the vanilla power steering fluid. It took me about 4-5 quarts to get pretty much all of the red atf out. I am not sure why they sell it in 12 oz bottles, maybe just to top it off? The car was a 98 camry.

I purchased OEM replacements and installed the driver's side today. I'm just wondering, do I add grease to the new inner tie rod joint, it looks like it came with a little grease from Toyota? Some time ago, my toyota Corolla's has a clunking noise on the steering clumn, and I reported the problem to my mechannic. He disasemble it and apply grease and the problem is solve.
If the inner tie rod is bent, will it ve the cause of knocking sound when the wheel makes impact on pot holes?? My service wants me to replace the whole steering piece vecause of this. (Rav4 2017, 77000km)
What about replacing your old hydraulic power steering with a newer electric system? Again, this would make the most sense I the Sienna since it has the most issues with this. A lot of people put Prius steering racks into their resto-mod or drag racer to have some power steering system because it's cheap and works.
My 03 Avalon is starting to leek From the Rack it has gotten to where it is put a glaze on my subframe so far I haven’t seen any fluid drop but it does have 250,000 miles. I’m not too worried about it yet once it gets worse I will probably get a factory rack and replace it myself. I have seen a forerunner come into our shop with over 300,000 miles in the steering rack was still leaking and it was the original one

Hello CCN!! If I were to entertain changing my 07 Avalon inner tie rod, how important is it to hold the rack internal shaft while loosening and torquing the new inner tie rod. Most diy mechanics never hold the rack shaft. Thanx great channel.
Might be slight over kill. I put in regular non stop leak prestone to replace atf and it worked really good. You can get it by the quart pretty cheap from the big blue box store.
Do you happen to know why on the 4th generation 4runner the power steering rack bushing on the passenger side is slotted for the bolt instead of just a round hole? I always thought that was odd. I would think that it could cause the steering rack to shift.

Hi, really love your videos. I have a question. I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla CE which is such a good car. Very reliable. I am having a few problems though. My wheel is loose and a little off centered. I recently got inspection and it passed but mechanic said I needed 1 tire because edge worn. He checked the steering problem. He then said I will be needing rack and pinion replacement eventually because it has leak . He quoted around 1300 and can work with me on paying. I don't think leak horrible, no puddles at all but of course it's an old car. Steering pretty normal other than off center a little and loose. What do you think I should do?! It's got 170,000 on it and great car! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I have had this issue with my truck with steering off center it turns out the alignment was off and when the alignment is off that also causes uneven wear on the tires

I have one confused question, if you can please answer. I own a Toyota Land Cruiser 4.0L V6 2006, and I want to grease the slip yoke and the u-joints from the shafts. Trying to find the right way to do it, there are so many opinions about how much grease to add to the slip yoke. As i understand Toyota is advising to add grease till it comes out, but many people say that can create some kind of a lock in the shaft and damage it. What is your view on how much grease should go into the slip yoke, if you can please tell me? Thank you in advance! Best wishes!

Love your vids....very informative......I have a somewhat urgent question because I am buying a 2005 Highlander Limited V6 tomorrow....I had the dealer do a pre purchase inspection but I think they missed an important item. I hear a power steering whine ...confirmed from moving wheel around and listening. The fluid is dark and needs to be replaced. After reading some forum posts and watching some vids I am concerned about the infamous power steering leaks. I also have a very faint very faint clunk in the steering at low speeds. Do you think the rack is going out....or should I just do a good fluid flush to make the whine go away? Thank you.........oh ps....its a 16yr old car :( with 100k miles on it....am I being realistic to think it will run to 200k if I rejuvenate all fluids and filters....spark plugs...valve cover gaskets..timing belt/water pump....and clean the throttle body. I know they ran to 200 k easily 10yrs a go but now she is quite a bit older.....I was hoping she had one more good stride left in her. I am concerned that a rack and pinion purchase might be in this cars future. Paying 8K for the car....mint interior....nice exterior.....4wd
Hi! The power steering whine could be from a lot of reasons but these cars can make a whine when they’re cold. Make sure you check the power steering system for leaks. If you find any perhaps negotiate the price a bit to compensate. These highlanders are very good cars. They do get oil leaks here and there from age and other than the power steering nothing would stop it driving from leaks. I think it’s realistic to get at least 200k out of it if not more with good maintenance.

Thank you Mathew! Honestly the power steering fluid is one that people debate. Typically most dealerships will recommend it at 5 years 50,000 miles however if you’ve had a leak before that was fixed likely the fluids been replaced. I would look at the fluid. If it looks dark replace it if not keep going. Replacement is simple. With the car off syphon the fluid out of the reservoir and fill it with new then start the engine and turn the wheel lock to lock multiple times and off and syphon again keep doing this until the fluid looks clear in the reservoir.
I would use any good quality fluid. Toyota doesn’t really have a dealership fluid. The factory filled stuff comes in a big metal container and costs a small fortune and is nothing special really. Any fluid from the parts store will do.
My 2002 camry had those bushings wear out completely. I replaced the whole rack considering it was just a matter of time before it leaked or had some other problem, and I didn't see any good way to extract and replace the existing ones without taking it out and bringing it to a machine shop anyway.
TRW mades ok parts. I would always compare prices to originals at least in Toyota’s case. Make sure you’re not paying the same for aftermarket when compared to original

Help! I have a 2012 Toyota Sequoia that the power steering went completely out. Car is new to me and I looked through the history and no repairs were ever made on the power steering to indicate an issue. Have gotten 2 mechanic opinions so far. First one told me I need a new pump and belt. Second one told me the whole rack, hoses, pressure hose, power steering cooler and pump need to be replace because the system was bone dry and there is metal contamination in the system from the fluid leaking and running dry. What do u think?

2005 Tacoma control arm bushings are shot. Can you just Replace the bushings instead of having to buy the whole control arm and replace it? Ball joints also are looking Questionable so can those be replaced separately as well or should I just buy the whole new control arm set up? And with that include the upper control arms.
Hi! For 2017 both engine options are good as long as they are maintained. The v6 has a lot more power but less mileage. The 4 cylinder has good power for daily driving and good mileage.
13:01 I have an 02 Camry with 198k miles with the 4 cyl has a steering wander because of the rack. I do most of my driving on the highway during my commute and its annoying to have a wandering steering. The boots are not leaking that much, just a little grease. Do you think I should replace the rack? If so, I've looked all around and the best one is a OEM reman from Toyota, I don't really wanna risk it with an aftermarket rack.
I replaced the boot on our 2010 sienna steering rack. and this week, our Lexus ES350 is replacing the powerin steering pump. The steering is OK, no issues, but it's leaking. Normally I will live with it. But in this car, it's leaking fluid right onto the CV shaft inner boots. That really bothers me. I guess the fluid never got changed for 10 years, so there comes the new pump from dealer, $450, ouch!
I have a 2006 sienna with 243,000 miles. It runs and drive pretty good but the steering is pretty clunky, I don’t hear any noise too much but it’s just loose. Should I be concerned? Up until now I’ve diagnosed it down to two problems either the tie rods or the intermediate shaft but I don’t really know forsure

With the information from you, sounds like mine is not an imminent problem and requires me to cough out $1700 right away. I will monitor that fluid reservoir more closely and make sure its level is right.

I have a 2005 Tundra with 250k miles and have had to replace torn boots but still on the original rack, the driver side has a very small leak, but I feel way better with you saying not to worry about it unless it’s leaking out every time I start the truck. My dad was a Toyota master tech for 20 years and told me something similar but I kinda questioned it, turns out I should have just listened to my dad 😂
And also, the I just replaced rack bushings and sway bar bushings and you are not lying about how much steering slop I had before! I didn’t even realize it and got used to it, but after putting in the new bushings my steering is so much tighter.
Recently had my 180k mile 2013 4Runner at a shop to have the front end checked, upper and lower ball joints, tie rods, and bushings are all tight. I thought I was going to have to replace some stuff, but the tech brought me in the garage and showed me everything was tight.
I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla that I baby. Only 61,000 miles and runs like a clock. The airbag recall was amazing. They must have sent me twenty letters to get it done ✅. I always put it of thinking I haven’t gotten a ticket for 40 years and no accidents either. Anyway Toyta just kept sending me letters and I finally got it done ✅. I had 200k miles on my 97 Avalon and original ball joints. I was amazed by that too haha. The control arm bushing where it attached to the subframe did go bad, but it just wiggled. This was after about 150k miles, so I guess it was acceptable haha. The rear toe adjustment rod bushings also went out twice in 200k miles. The thing that killed that car was getting rear ended on the highway, otherwise i'd still have it. Was a great car and in great condition.
My first time dealing with an outer tie rod replacement was on my 93 Toyota pickup V6, at 390k miles… I had to learn the removal tricks quickly, it fought me for a solid day. After letting it soak in PB Blaster overnight, it finally broke free while hammering the side of the steering knuckle. The relief I felt when it popped was something I’ll never forget. I loved that truck, but all those emission lines were a PITA…
Most wonderful thing about Toyota that I am aware of is how easy it is to access things under the hood. I have had cars where I need to take out the engine to get to the water pump (PT Cruiser). If you change the oil regularly, your Toyota will last until your next car.
My 2000 Camry ps leaks were rusting return line only .Easily repaired all else OK.I am amazed how well tie rods and ball joints have held up for over 400K .Thanks for your honest opinion .

I had a problem with with the return line hose. Where it cracked and a lot of oil leaked, but thanks I found your solution and went replaced it myself and problem solved.
I've just replaced my inner and outer tie rods on a 2000 Tacoma 4x4. Normally for lower ball joints, I buy oem no matter what price, but oem inner tie rods are 4x more expensive and outter tie rods are 7x more expensive than aftermarket. I got Sankei 555 made in Japan for inner. If they last several years, that's pretty good to me bc I can replace them myself. The tie rods are very easy to replace with proper tools and I always enjoy wrenching on my car.
I have a 2000 Camry needed to replace the ps belt.I priced it at Napa 28 bucks ,factory belt at Toyota was 13 bucks .In the same vane I needed a rocker cover gasket it was 10 bucks cheaper at Toyota.It can't be stressed enough always check the dealers first.The quality is the best

I love to repair most Toyota rack . They are simple and strong.
Power steering fluid from the toyota factory is just cheap hydraulic fluid with no additives to decrease production costs. Toyota recommends you refill with Dexron II/III ATF because it has detergents and seal conditioners that maintain the system long term. If they would have used atf from the factory in those Siennas, the racks would have lasted a lot longer. I recommend that everyone use a decent atf for the power steering so they never have to replace any steering componets.
I totally agree with you. I have a Fortuner with only 10k miles and replace the PS fluid myself with amsoil atf dex 3. the old fluid that I managed to catch in a plastic bottle from the return line, that I removed from the reservoir, had some kind of black debris (more like sand). So, I'd suggest replace the fluid with a good quality dex 3 atf and just treat the factory fluid as a break-in fluid if you would. the steering feel after the replacement is awesome btw.

I put dex vi in my old camry and it had issues especially in the cold. Switched to power steering fluid from the parts store and it was a massive improvement. Not sure if I am going to try atf again that didn't work out so good.
@@lejoshmont2093 Dexron II/III is a completely different fluid from Dexron VI. VI is a low viscosity ATF almost identical to WS and should never be used as PS or hydraulic fluid.

First generation tacoma's rack bushings go out fast. All of the first gens. Took 3 years for me to go through 2 bushing sets. Then i bought after market & they lasted until a year ago.
I remembered my 1998 Sienna has rack and pinion leak and the dealer quoted me around $3000 (part and labor) back in 2007 so I opted not to replace it and traded the 1998 Sienna for the 2007 Sienna which I still own today as of 09/21/22. Finger cross, the 2007 steering rack hasn't leak yet.

I have very good luck using Valvoline Maxlife ATF in leaky Toyota racks. I flush them and usually very little to no leaks afterwards.
Hi, Thanks for this channel, you have seriously saved my butt a few times. Now I have just dropped $1500 on replacing the Power steering pump and the left and right Axel seals. All of the sudden the night I took the car home (2008 Sienna LE), It had an even worse leak than before. Today the garage looked at it and said the PS rack was leaking, they showed me that it had a substantial amount of fluid all over the boot. Of course they didn't say it was leaking when they diagnosed the two seals and the pump. Fishy.. He poked a small hole in the boot and said fluid was escaping through the hole. My reservoir under the hood is not so low. I figure that I will just fill it when needed. But I wondered what do you think? Should I replace the whole rack now? Great and very informative video. The issue I have must not be very common since you have not mentioned it. 2013 Sienna with electric PS. The alignment shop told me my inner and outer tie rods are bad on passenger side. I had hard time believing both are bad. When I raised the car to check, neither are bad but the play is in the rack. the main shaft has front to back play on the passenger side only, making it look as if there is play in the tie rods. Thanks for all the tips. I have an 04 Camry with 70k that recently developed a steering problem. There's virtually no power steering when turning to the right. I work at a Honda dealer and had a tech look at it. He saw some leakage from the pump and said that must be it. Did the pump, didn't fix it. I keep seeing the steering intermediate shaft coming up as a problem. Does it sound like that might be it?
You are right on the money at 7:55!! I have a 2004 Sienna with a leaking power steering rack. I just had the steering pump and Resvoir replaced last month. But I've been having steering problems and it's indeed the rack. I will choose to buy the original oem part from the dealer that's $703. Question is: once I replace it, do I need to replace it again in the future?

My moms 98 Corolla had the ps rack leaking a bit. The reservoir would get low like every 3 months or so. Id laugh when my daughter would ride in the Corolla when ps fliud low n say- Dad, grandmas car sounds like Chewbacca again. 😄

If you’re putting new tires on the car perhaps it’s not a bad idea to check the alignment but I would look at the old tires that you are replacing if they’re worn evenly likely your alignment is good. I wouldn’t pay too much for an alignment if you end up doing it
2006 Sienna that did just that, slowly filling up a boot with fluid, then leaking a few drips before the boot cracked more and lost all the fluid in there at once. But the reservoir level is doing fine....because it took 15 years to lose that much. You didn't mention fluid type. It sounds like something that helps cause this leaking is that the PS System doesn't actually want PS Fluid. At least in this Sienna, the manual states to use ATF. It could be that the previous owner, a shop, or even myself topped it off with PS fluid. Luckily a fluid replacement is easy, even as a one person job but especially if you have a second person. You basically just take out all of the old fluid from the reservoir that you can and top off with new fluid, pull the return line and put the return into a different clear container, and then turn on the system and turn the steering wheel back and forth a few times. Keep the reservoir filled up so it doesn't get any air bubbles in the system, and you're ready to reconnect the return line once you see fresh fluid come out. It really is a 5 minute task, but if the fluid doesn't look bad then even once every 100k is likely plenty often.

It’s electric power steering. I check the parts on Toyota website. Seems the picture shows hydraulic power steering rack. Also I checked the parts on eBay. Some sellers say their parts fit 2013-2018 rav4. Some say fitting 5th letter of F on vin number, some say fitting 5th J on vin. Could you please clarify a little bit more about the part? Hi CCN, I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 2010 Toyota Sequoia with 100K miles and would like to refresh the power steering fluid using a baster to remove the fluid and refresh a few times, which will require 3 or 4 quarts I'm guessing. In your video, you recommend using power steering fluid over ATF fluid as the ATF has additives that are unnecessary for power steering...makes total sense. I'd like to avoid using the expensive Toyota power steering fluid, but Advance Auto, Napa and Amazon all recommend ATF fluid. Amazon also recommends generic Prestone power steering fluid. The Prestone web site recommends either the Prestone Power Steering Fluid + Stop Leak generic (price is reasonable by the quart but does not say Dextron III anywhere) or their Asian vehicle version (which is only sold in 12 ounce bottles, does not mention Dexron III and is ridiculously expensive). I love your channel but I can't find a reasonably priced power steering fluid that I know for certain is compatible and relatively inexpensive! Please help!
I have a Toyota Tundra 2021 and I clearly see that there is not an ATF inside the system. It is some kind of yellowish or amber color fluid - definitely power steering fluid. So I wonder wish one should I add??? I used to have the same situation in my Toyota Avalon 2008 where according to manual it was also saying that ATF is the correct fluid. After I added it it cost me $1000 in repair to replace p/s pump and a pressure hose. Now I have no desire to add ATF

Thank you for watching my video. You can use Dex atf. I would however use any fluid labeled as power steering as it has a specific additive package for power steering. At the dealership they usually use generic power steering fluid that’s compatible.
This was my exact question. There’s a lot of conflicting opinions relating to whether to use basic power steering fluid vs ATF (owner’s manual suggests dexron II or III). The parts dept at my local dealer said they usually just go with power steering fluid. Any recommendations on brand of power steering fluid? Synthetic or non-synthetic Thanks
@@sigurdthehusky4059 my personal experience is do not use dex vi that caused problems. I flushed the system with non-syntheic prestone with NO stopleak and that made it work a lot better. If you are going to change it every 50k you will probably be fine with the vanilla power steering fluid. It took me about 4-5 quarts to get pretty much all of the red atf out. I am not sure why they sell it in 12 oz bottles, maybe just to top it off? The car was a 98 camry.

I purchased OEM replacements and installed the driver's side today. I'm just wondering, do I add grease to the new inner tie rod joint, it looks like it came with a little grease from Toyota? Some time ago, my toyota Corolla's has a clunking noise on the steering clumn, and I reported the problem to my mechannic. He disasemble it and apply grease and the problem is solve.
If the inner tie rod is bent, will it ve the cause of knocking sound when the wheel makes impact on pot holes?? My service wants me to replace the whole steering piece vecause of this. (Rav4 2017, 77000km)
What about replacing your old hydraulic power steering with a newer electric system? Again, this would make the most sense I the Sienna since it has the most issues with this. A lot of people put Prius steering racks into their resto-mod or drag racer to have some power steering system because it's cheap and works.
My 03 Avalon is starting to leek From the Rack it has gotten to where it is put a glaze on my subframe so far I haven’t seen any fluid drop but it does have 250,000 miles. I’m not too worried about it yet once it gets worse I will probably get a factory rack and replace it myself. I have seen a forerunner come into our shop with over 300,000 miles in the steering rack was still leaking and it was the original one

Might be slight over kill. I put in regular non stop leak prestone to replace atf and it worked really good. You can get it by the quart pretty cheap from the big blue box store.

Hi, really love your videos. I have a question. I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla CE which is such a good car. Very reliable. I am having a few problems though. My wheel is loose and a little off centered. I recently got inspection and it passed but mechanic said I needed 1 tire because edge worn. He checked the steering problem. He then said I will be needing rack and pinion replacement eventually because it has leak . He quoted around 1300 and can work with me on paying. I don't think leak horrible, no puddles at all but of course it's an old car. Steering pretty normal other than off center a little and loose. What do you think I should do?! It's got 170,000 on it and great car! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I have had this issue with my truck with steering off center it turns out the alignment was off and when the alignment is off that also causes uneven wear on the tires

I have one confused question, if you can please answer. I own a Toyota Land Cruiser 4.0L V6 2006, and I want to grease the slip yoke and the u-joints from the shafts. Trying to find the right way to do it, there are so many opinions about how much grease to add to the slip yoke. As i understand Toyota is advising to add grease till it comes out, but many people say that can create some kind of a lock in the shaft and damage it. What is your view on how much grease should go into the slip yoke, if you can please tell me?

I just watched this video again, is the loud humming the noise the 2010-2015 priuses were making when the p/s electric motor came loose from the steering column?

Hi! It’s possible. The humming can be normal if you turn it fast but the clicking can either be a steering intermediate shaft or a loose columb
Love your vids....very informative......I have a somewhat urgent question because I am buying a 2005 Highlander Limited V6 tomorrow....I had the dealer do a pre purchase inspection but I think they missed an important item. I hear a power steering whine ...confirmed from moving wheel around and listening. The fluid is dark and needs to be replaced. After reading some forum posts and watching some vids I am concerned about the infamous power steering leaks. I also have a very faint very faint clunk in the steering at low speeds. Do you think the rack is going out....or should I just do a good fluid flush to make the whine go away? Thank you.........oh ps....its a 16yr old car :( with 100k miles on it....am I being realistic to think it will run to 200k if I rejuvenate all fluids and filters....spark plugs...valve cover gaskets..timing belt/water pump....and clean the throttle body. I know they ran to 200 k easily 10yrs a go but now she is quite a bit older.....I was hoping she had one more good stride left in her. I am concerned that a rack and pinion purchase might be in this cars future. Paying 8K for the car....mint interior....nice exterior.....4wd
Hi! The power steering whine could be from a lot of reasons but these cars can make a whine when they’re cold. Make sure you check the power steering system for leaks. If you find any perhaps negotiate the price a bit to compensate. These highlanders are very good cars. They do get oil leaks here and there from age and other than the power steering nothing would stop it driving from leaks. I think it’s realistic to get at least 200k out of it if not more with good maintenance.

Thank you Mathew! Honestly the power steering fluid is one that people debate. Typically most dealerships will recommend it at 5 years 50,000 miles however if you’ve had a leak before that was fixed likely the fluids been replaced. I would look at the fluid. If it looks dark replace it if not keep going. Replacement is simple. With the car off syphon the fluid out of the reservoir and fill it with new then start the engine and turn the wheel lock to lock multiple times and off and syphon again keep doing this until the fluid looks clear in the reservoir.

I would use any good quality fluid. Toyota doesn’t really have a dealership fluid. The factory filled stuff comes in a big metal container and costs a small fortune and is nothing special really. Any fluid from the parts store will do.
My 2002 camry had those bushings wear out completely. I replaced the whole rack considering it was just a matter of time before it leaked or had some other problem, and I didn't see any good way to extract and replace the existing ones without taking it out and bringing it to a machine shop anyway.
How about TRW,I replace one in a Mercury Topaz. Took the the weekend to do. On my daughter's car..
TRW mades ok parts. I would always compare prices to originals at least in Toyota’s case. Make sure you’re not paying the same for aftermarket when compared to original

Help! I have a 2012 Toyota Sequoia that the power steering went completely out. Car is new to me and I looked through the history and no repairs were ever made on the power steering to indicate an issue. Have gotten 2 mechanic opinions so far. First one told me I need a new pump and belt. Second one told me the whole rack, hoses, pressure hose, power steering cooler and pump need to be replace because the system was bone dry and there is metal contamination in the system from the fluid leaking and running dry. What do u think?

2005 Tacoma control arm bushings are shot. Can you just Replace the bushings instead of having to buy the whole control arm and replace it? Ball joints also are looking Questionable so can those be replaced separately as well or should I just buy the whole new control arm set up? And with that include the upper control arms.
For landcruisers the balljoint doesn’t come separately from toyota. People use 555 brand ones. Do you have an opinion about them?
What’s your opinion on a dealer reman rack? i my get one for my Avalon and install it myself

Hi! For 2017 both engine options are good as long as they are maintained. The v6 has a lot more power but less mileage. The 4 cylinder has good power for daily driving and good mileage.
13:01 I have an 02 Camry with 198k miles with the 4 cyl has a steering wander because of the rack. I do most of my driving on the highway during my commute and its annoying to have a wandering steering. The boots are not leaking that much, just a little grease. Do you think I should replace the rack? If so, I've looked all around and the best one is a OEM reman from Toyota, I don't really wanna risk it with an aftermarket rack.

I got 1/4 play with my wheels move back and forth.
I replaced the boot on our 2010 sienna steering rack. and this week, our Lexus ES350 is replacing the powerin steering pump. The steering is OK, no issues, but it's leaking. Normally I will live with it. But in this car, it's leaking fluid right onto the CV shaft inner boots. That really bothers me. I guess the fluid never got changed for 10 years, so there comes the new pump from dealer, $450, ouch!
Seals are replaceable. If the pump was working fine other than the leak you probably could have made it out cheaper.

I have a 2006 sienna with 243,000 miles. It runs and drive pretty good but the steering is pretty clunky, I don’t hear any noise too much but it’s just loose. Should I be concerned? Up until now I’ve diagnosed it down to two problems either the tie rods or the intermediate shaft but I don’t really know forsure

Would like to see a video on older 1st gen 2002 4cyl Highlander O2 sensors, as I cant tell what upstream is vs down and the ODB tool I use I dont know how to differentiat which is which. Also would love a video on 3rd gen V6 sparkplug removal tips and tricks for the rear set..maybe there are tools or some method to replace without so much of a hassle..?

What about the steering intermediate shaft binding on 4Runners? Have you come across that?
