@donphillips4492 The way your describing it now, it clearly sounds like a immobilizer issue. You need to get that vehicle towed to the dealer. It could be a whole lot of different things.
Thanks for the instruction on how to flush our power steering. I find it very helpful that you explained very well. I have a 2006 Toyota forerunner with 260,000 miles on it and I partially flushed it before but I think now I’m gonna go in, I need to flush it again. Thanks again for your instructions.
This is so well done. Ex Chicago Bear fan turned Viking but always thankful to see any 4 Runner tips. On my third 4 Runner and wouldn’t have it any other way.
I argued with my father about using Dexron II/III for my power steering. He was content that I was wrong about my own vehicle even when I whipped out my manual. Now I have to drain the system and redo what he did.😂
I’ve done this twice the easy way with my wife lol I drain the old fluid, put new fluid in, have my wife steer while changing to each main gear (P, N, R,D), drain again, put in new fluid, over and over till it’s red. Took about 10 minutes. Nice video! I used the Valvoline atf full synthetic and like you said, I used 2 quarts from the gallon jug I got. My wife definitely noticed the difference each time it was done.
Great video, thanks. I come from the honda v6 world (odyssey with 350 000 miles - diy), but just bought a 2012 4runner that was a little neglected. I've previously done this with turkey baster and a plastic tube at end to suck out the reservoir. I did the hook up the same as you except bucket instead of vacuum pump. I then started the engjne with a full power steering reservoir only for a few seconds and refilling in between. It allowed me to move the steering wheel during the flush. For the 4runner, I will probably ask my wife or my youngest son to fill reservoir and give me the heads up when to turn off to get this done quickly. I will add 1oz per quart AT-205 reseal at end to restore internal seals as per scotty killmer. Like that hotsauce commercial, I have put that sh** on/in everything for many years. I also love the idea of just repeatedly drain and fill, as per other comment, it proves there are multiple good ways of accomplishing tasks.
I just want to say thank you for these series of videos. Being new to DIY maintenance on a vehicle, I have tackle i few of these project , successful. Your step by step walk thru is awesome! THANK YOU again!!!!
I bought the tools that were used in this video, and followed along. I've done many flushes, but Toyota seems so great using these specific tools, I figured I'd treat myself. Great pump. Thank you for the video. 😀
Following all your videos for maintenance on my 2004 with 208k miles. About to do the transmission flush, and will probably have a few extra quarts left over. It will be used for this job for sure!
So what are your thoughts on using synthetic Valvoline Max Life ATF fluid? The container says Dextron VI, DEX/MERC. Reading posts on the Toyota forum, I’m not sure if this is okay or not. I’ll have a few leftover quarts after the ATF flush/fill.
Great video, you make this look like a piece of cake. I'm watching these videos in preparation to do a bunch of maintenance on mine, 2013 with 173k, I bought it at 80k and it's unlikely this has ever been done.
Very nice. I need to do this to my wife's (well, now mine) 03 4Runner. I honestly don't think its ever been done in the 177K miles it has traveled. It's very dark. I'm unemployed at the current time, and have plenty of time! 🙂I did a transmission drain and fill this last weekend and wow, I don't think that has ever been done either! Very easy. I must have got some air in the line. Followed Vikings instructions did the steering wheel back and forth like 8 times and problem solved. I saw a video that said for the rear all you have to do is put the ignition to the On position and hold down the brake and the “pump” will push out the fluid. Is that correct or should I do it the old way of pump, hold and release with the wrench? Appreciate you!

Just wondering about the Barcelona Red 4runner. I can imagine that it will be posted on the dealership website. What is the name of the dealership if possible?
Hi @VikingsGarage Will Red Line 30504 D4 Synthetic ATF be equivalent to the Valvoline Synthetic ATF that you linked? I've been using Red Line oils in the diffs and transfer case with good success, so thought I'd use the same brand in the power steering too. Please let me know and God Bless!
Was there something on the tip of the hose for the extractor you removed to get time into the return line? I’m looking at a extractor on harbor freight but I’m unsure if the lines will fit the return
@@VikingsGarageI just did it and everything went great except for it made a little noise at first but I assume it was just air in the system, everything feels great now! Thanks for the video it made this flush super easy
@@VikingsGarage thanks for the info. Now...can I put the AT & power steering fluid in the AT in place of the WS? Do you know the difference in term of chemicals? I am confused as to why Toyota makes WS ATF and another AT & power steering fluid.
I switched from ATF Dextron to a clear power steering fluid similar to the look of the original fluid. Reason being, the power steering system doesn’t need friction modifiers that is in ATF.
They do sell bottles of “power steering fluid” which is transmission fluid with a different dye. Just use dexron 3 or 4 trans fluid from your local parts store
@@VikingsGarage I was trying to figure out what size I needed to cap off the return and what size adapter I needed for my hand pump to suck out the fluid. Love the videos!
Just wondering if using other brand fluids is safe for the 4runner. I hear that Toyota braned fluids, like brake fluids, has a conditioner to protect the components. Is there true?
That’s a very complicated question to answer but in the shortest way possible to answer: Toyota does include certain additives in their fluids for a reason (or so they claim) so it’s always smart to use what they recommend, considering they have our best interest in mind. Me personally, I think you should do what you are comfortable with and do it regularly. Regular and proper maintenance is what makes your Toyota so reliable.
@VikingsGarage it is complicated. I have followed toyotas recommendations, and other than motor oil, most products state something about use safe for toyota vehicles. NAPA automotive has a brake fluid stating specifically for Toyota vehicles.
You got to initialize the window operation in the master switch. Press and hold down all the way plus 3 seconds and press and hold up all the way plus 3 seconds. That should do it!!

I have a 2023 4 Runner limited I love this car but I will like to Kano if I can decrease the air wind noise inside of the car at the road at 70 or 80 miles thank you
Did you jack up the front so the tires were off of the ground?
I didn’t, this is made to be easy to follow….
Not here to confuse or complicate. 😉
I liked the coler of your toyota 🤩🤩
Thank you!! 🤘🏻
Cool my.boy.thank,you
🤘🏻
I had thought he was going to put a link for the extraction pump but I didn’t see anything?
It’s in the videos description Sir
amzn.to/49bsAXc
So just turning the wheel off bleeding the system?
👍🏻
Just wondering about the Barcelona Red 4runner. I can imagine that it will be posted on the dealership website. What is the name of the dealership if possible?
It’s now a very decent 4Runner, we are located in Green Brook NJ .
Empire Auto Mall.
@@VikingsGarage thank you
Having a hard time extracting fluid from the return hose; do i just keep pumping until i start to see the new fluid?
Correct!!
It will take a while, but it does work.
Make sure you got all the steps right.
That’s an expensive option but yes, it would work!! 👍🏻
Was there something on the tip of the hose for the extractor you removed to get time into the return line? I’m looking at a extractor on harbor freight but I’m unsure if the lines will fit the return
If it does have an adapter, you can always remove it. Should fit perfectly.
@@VikingsGaragehey one more question I got 2 qts to do flush and fill, this will be enough right?
Yes
@@VikingsGarageI just did it and everything went great except for it made a little noise at first but I assume it was just air in the system, everything feels great now! Thanks for the video it made this flush super easy
@doughartwell5319 👏🏻👏🏻
Once you pulled new fluid into your siphon tube how did you not lose it when taking it out of the return line making a mess?
Siphon tube is under pressure/suction Sir.
Is the Toyota AT& power steering fluid the same as the Toyota ATF WS?
No. You cannot use WS ATF fluid in the power steering, only the ATF SPECIFIED.
@@VikingsGarage thanks for the info. Now...can I put the AT & power steering fluid in the AT in place of the WS? Do you know the difference in term of chemicals? I am confused as to why Toyota makes WS ATF and another AT & power steering fluid.
Removed the clamp from the return resevoir, but unable to remove the hose (stuck) any suggestions on how to remove the hose? Thanks in advance
Wiggle it gentle, or pry out with a prying tool, gently offcourse.
I switched from ATF Dextron to a clear power steering fluid similar to the look of the original fluid. Reason being, the power steering system doesn’t need friction modifiers that is in ATF.
Where do you recycle the old liquid?
Any local parts store will take it. I personally work at an automotive shop, so we have our own oil waste tanks.
Where did you get that toyota dexron iii I check my local Toyota dealers none of them has it. They keep telling me to use power steering fluid
They do sell bottles of “power steering fluid” which is transmission fluid with a different dye. Just use dexron 3 or 4 trans fluid from your local parts store
@@VikingsGarage I end up buying it from Ebay, so difficult to get it from dealer
@ldam 👍🏻
Or you can remove the fluid several times with a "turkey baster" and replace without all the mess. You won't get 100% but it's plenty.
I have an off-topic question of this episode topic: What are your thoughts on the secondary air pump filter upgrade/replacement to the uni filter?
I’ll have to get back to you on that one. Not familiar with a uni filter
@VikingsGarage Thank you for your reply, I just bought a 2016 4runner SR5 2WD, and I'm doing all the maintenance on it myself following your videos
@youssbaraki That’s awesome!! 👏🏻
Glad to see that you did a video about the secondary air pump filter upgrade to the uni filter, I did it on mine out of precaution
Absolutely!!
I appreciate your suggestion!! 🙏🏻
What size is ID of the return tubing?
I don’t know Sir came with the pump..
@@VikingsGarage I was trying to figure out what size I needed to cap off the return and what size adapter I needed for my hand pump to suck out the fluid.
Love the videos!
@Goofketeers thank you!! 🙏🏻
I honestly tried a few caps I had laying around.
How many miles u got when the job was done
I did put it in the video Sir, just shy of 30k
Can i do this for a tacoma?
You sure can.
Just wondering if using other brand fluids is safe for the 4runner. I hear that Toyota braned fluids, like brake fluids, has a conditioner to protect the components. Is there true?
That’s a very complicated question to answer but in the shortest way possible to answer:
Toyota does include certain additives in their fluids for a reason (or so they claim) so it’s always smart to use what they recommend, considering they have our best interest in mind.
The best alternative I found is the Valvoline atf synthetic. So far so good!
So go with that, they can’t lie on those labels.
Valvoline makes a very good product, lots of testing. 👏🏻
Transmission fluid?
Indeed
Hi have a 5th gen 4Runner the problem I got the rear passenger right side “ Wondow switch light is blinking “ what is the problem I have
You got to initialize the window operation in the master switch.
Press and hold down all the way plus 3 seconds and press and hold up all the way plus 3 seconds.
That should do it!!
@@VikingsGarage ok all try it
Good video I'll do it at 60k
💯
Why would someone do that to the 4Runners breaks?
I know right, how do you not hear your brakes grinding 🤷🏼♂️
Very detailed however no closeups to see where!
🤷🏼♂️
I need to do this on my 2018 TRD do those smaller pumps works also?
@ricardodesouza7229 I don’t know what you referring too
@@VikingsGarage not the one you have it’s a smaller one hand pump. I wish there was a way to send you a picture because I’d really need to get this done on mine but dealership is a ripoff
@ricardodesouza7229 then just do it, stop worrying so much. It’s not that complicated Sir.
Probably should jack up front wheels when getting the air out not to put strain on power steering rack
Read what you just wrote and think about it… does that make any sense to you.
Front end at frame rails. My bad.
My hose was a b to take off and reinstall. Anyone else.
Wiggle it, just a little bit!
As you can see....
Yes, I do repeat myself a lot. I am working on it!!
I do speak fluent 3 other languages. 🤷🏼♂️
