    Pterosaurs are archosaurs, a group dinosaurs are included in, but they're not dinosaurs themselves. Aside from gliding as seen in Microraptor and Yi qi, no true dinosaurs could fly.

    One mistake that I think the writer of this SCP made was that it was in no way paranormal or would be able to attract the attention of the Foundation. Scientists are still discovering several new species every year, so the discovery of this thing would likely be very publicized on AnimalPlanet or something.

    • @unixone7558
      @unixone7558 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Josh Haynes There are SCP's that aren't exactly "paranormal" and more just "unusual". Plus it's not exactly out-of-character for the Foundation.

      Josh Haynes well its the only one they know of and do not know of any anomalous properties or how dangerous it can be. plus if it somehow came from the past of dinosaurs which you would not want loose or it would severely disrupt nature.

      Pterosaurs are nonetheless more closely related to birds and other dinosaurs than to crocodiles or any other living reptile, though they are not bird ancestors. Pterosaurs are also colloquially referred to as pterodactyls, particularly in fiction and journalism. However, technically, pterodactyl only refers to members of the genus Pterodactylus, and more broadly to members of the suborder Pterodactyloidea of the pterosaurs.

    Pterry the tiny dactyl.... How cute.
    This inspired me to look up the information about Pterodactyls. What I found most enlightening. Jurassic park and a number of films often called the larger class of "Pterodactyl" that particular name, and of course it stuck - but the truth of the matter is that they were called something far different. More Akin to this: Quetzalcoatlus Northropi.
    .. The first of that value reminds me of some videos that often defined some ancient carnivorous birds from the Mid-America's (Aztec? Inca? Maya? Something...) history. Perhaps there is more to that description? And maybe where they decided pterodactyl's would be better applied? Mmhh.. Interesting non-the-less.

Pterodactyls are also quite small like this SCP, there are larger Pterosaurs such as Pteranodon which is just larger than human and Quetzalcoatlus which is the largest known animal to ever fly being slightly larger than that of a modern day giraffe!

      As"Bug" is an 'incorrect' colloquialism for insects and arachnids, people use dinosaur as a colloquialism for reptiles at the time period dinosaurs lived quite often. Dinosaur itself is a word that is technically incorrect since it means "fearfully great(terrible) lizard". Dinosaurs are, of course, not lizards at all, they aren't even really reptiles by modern standards. Although not scientifically correct people using bug and dinosaur aren't wrong as much as using a colloquial term instead of a technical term.

    • @SpaceElf
      @SpaceElf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Shadoo Using a colloquial term in place of a technical term because you don't know better is called being *wrong.*
      People think of quarks, gluons and higgs bosons as atoms. That's incorrect. They're not even close to an atom in classification. They're wrong. Colloquialism or not.
      It's this kind of science ignorant thinking that leads to people sulking and wasting the time of scientists and governments bitching and bemoaning Pluto becoming a dwarf plant and dinosaurs being revealed to have feathers.

    • @Ec360Gaming
      @Ec360Gaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Unix One Thats the thing, this shouldnt even qualify as an SCP since it could be easily explained by science, poses no threat to anyone, and wouldn't destroy our worldview if it was discovered by normal people. This is the kind of things that would get a doccumentary on animal planet if it was discovered, not locked up the foundation.

    • @unixone7558
      @unixone7558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ec360Gaming Perhaps "Pterry" couldn't qualify, but it's mother? You know, that giant Pterodactyl that size somewhere in the jungle? Those things had wingspans like airplanes, and the fact that the modern environment should prevent them from existing. That would be an SCP if I've ever heard one.

    • @CJCroen1393
      @CJCroen1393 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the rules of the wiki, an SCP doesn't have to be scary or dangerous--if you can't pull those off, then just go for weird. A miniature relict pterosaur seems like a good fit for weird (contrary to what one may think, a surviving pterosaur would NOT be easily explained by science--we'd still need to account for things like the fact that the pterosaur fossil record ends at the end of the Cretaceous).

    As a paleontology nerd all the inaccuracies and terminology here frustrate me greatly
    Pterodactyl is not a species or group of species, it is an outdated name for pterosaurs.
    Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs but a closely related branch or archosaurs (dinosaurs, birds, crocodiles, pterosaurs, and plesiosaurs)
    The down on the individual is an actual thing most pterosaurs has scientifically known as picnofibers (probably spelled that wrong).
    I do not however reject the nick name Ptery as that is adorable...

    As much as this has been said all over on here, pterosaurs aren't dinosaurs. the word -saur roughly translates to lizard, hence why dinosaur translated means "terrible lizard" and pterosaur translates to "flying lizard". The species is actually called Pterodactylus and in reality wasn't so small. it was kinda big, but not as huge as a Pteranodon. Just a lil prehistoric knowledge.

    • @CJCroen1393

      True. By the same logic they put foreward, Basilosaurus (an ancient whale that was mistaken for a reptile) would ALSO have to be a dinosaur.

      @4ulquiorra4schifer4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CJCroen1393 exactly, but for some reason, even with a foreword, they still say dinosaur when it comes to pterosaurs or aquatisaurs (the name I give for the aquatic reptiles that lived during the time of the dinosaurs). I really don't get it.

      Interestingly, the only Mesozoic critters that can really fit the mold of the "giant lizard" stereotype are mosasaurs, because they're ACTUAL lizards (although they likely didn't act like lizards)!

    I have no idea why this qualifies as an SCP, sure its never never been seen before but scientists discover new species all the time. There's nothing paranormal or dangerous about it and the "rip in time" thing isnt even confirmed. This is the kind of thing you would expect to see on animal planet, not locked up in secreet bunker meant for containing the most horrible eldrich abominations in the world

    Pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs they're pterosaurs which were reptiles, unlike dinosaurs which were more closely related to birds; modern birds are technically considered dinosaurs.

    • @herohamza1196
      @herohamza1196 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pterosaurs have fur--or more accurately "pycnofibres", which is the scientific term. Not actually feathers (and probably not quite fur either) but apparently had a similar origin.

      It's worse than that--scientists have classified dinosaurs and pterosaurs separately since the 1700s (and that goes for plesiosaurs, mosasaurs and ichthyosaurs too), and now, in 2016, there are still people who say "well if it's big, dead and reptilian it's a dinosaur and no one can tell me otherwise."
      I once got into an argument with someone who claimed that birds can't be dinosaurs because, in his words, "a dinosaur is defined as a giant fossilized reptile". (facepalm)
