    I really like to see the rest of the construction of the travel mug.

    Did an 18 ft boom for my boat 8 sided. Laid all 8 staves out on the tape, applied epoxy with structural filler, rolled it, taped it, wrapped it in a double spiral with a rope, and drove in wedges until every joint oozed full length. It looked so good I left it 8-sided instead of turning it round as is the tradition.

    I tape them upside down. Lay the tape on the bench top and place the staves onto the tape. Then they are ready for glue without having to turn them over.🙂🙂

    I understand the 22.5 degrees * 8 = 360 degrees but how do you determine the width of the wood?

    Large wide rubber bands work awesome. I use those and they pull rather tight.

    I do use blue tape for the "hinges" on the outside, but I use rubber bands to apply pressure to clamp them all together. It is more forgiving that using blue tape as a clamp.

    @ornball That's a Micro Jig GRR-Ripper®. It's sold at most woodworking stores (Woodcraft, Rockler, and similar). Very safe way to cut over the blade and small pieces.

    What is the width of each piece at a 22 1/2 degree?

    @Sineath Measure the circumference of the cup then divide by how ever many staves you will have.

  • @portpipe99
    @portpipe99 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    it depends the circumference you are looking for if you make the staves to wide and you turn the shell the walls will be thin, the bigger the shell the more staves you need so the walls are thicker, you could change the angle to 15 degrees which will give you 24 staves

    How do you determine what the fence setting needs to be? In other words how do you know how wide the staves need to be?

    • @Arthonicus
      @Arthonicus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super late reply but you basically divide 360 degrees by the number of sides. So 360/16=22.5. Stay safe.

    What did you set the fence at . How wide were the STAVES?

      This video was shot 5 years ago and we unfortunately do not know the exact width of the staves that George was cutting for that particular project. The main point he is making is that in order to cut an 8-sided ring, he sets the saw at 22-1/2 degrees. The staves can be cut at any width and will still form a ring.

    • @johnthebob1
      @johnthebob1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      doesnt matter they just need to be all the same width. best thing to do is calculate the inner circumference you want then divide by the number of staves. And if you want more staves then divide the number of staves by 360 (there is 360 degrees in a circle) and then by 2 to give you the new angle to cut. For example in this video he has 8 staves. If you divide that by 360 you get 45 then by 2 for each side of the stave you get 22.5 degrees. if the circumference of your cup is going to be 150mm then divide 150 by 8 and cut 8 staves at that width at the widest part or slightly smaller so you have room to turn down the stock

    If you tweak the saw angle, you can glue in one pass. If you need really good glue joints all around. Drum builders know what I'm talking about.

      Any tips on how to tweak it to perfection?

    • @billwells8054
      @billwells8054 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matt09ward -- I use a magnetic digital angle indicator like "Tilt Box II Digital Inclinometer" or similar to set the saw blade angle. That will get you close - about +/- 0.2 degrees. Then do a trial cutting scrap wood staves and see how they fit. Then adjust the blade tilt very slightly; repeat till it fits air tight!

    How do you know the inches/size/measurement of wood based on degrees cut? Does it matter?
