    Erik, Thanks for the STRIP StopBlock Jig tip. For many years I have been using a narrow push-stick between the blade and the fence. This has to be much safer. Glad you had your face shield on during the mishap. Too many people tend to remove the shield once the project gets into the sanding phase. Regards!

      I wear a Trend Airshield Pro and I like it but that 3m sounds really sweet. I was wearing my regular face shield for this turning.

    Love your videos Erik! You do such nice work and are a big inspiration to me. I like how you talk about your mistakes and discuss why they happened and how we can prevent them in our own turning projects. Thanks for taking the time to video and teach! Take care!

    I'm sure glad you were wearing your faceshield, Erik. I had something much the same happen while wearing my faceshield a few years ago. Without the shield I'm sure I would have been in the hospital, or worse. Have never turned ANYTHING without it since!
    Great looking vase, my friend!
    Take care,

      Thanks Gord I am a stickler for wearing my face shield unless it is a really small piece and even then I usually have my face shield on and not just safety glasses.

    Really nice looking vase. I have been a boat builder for quite a while using primarily teak. Whenever teak is glued together the mating surfaces are wiped with acetone to remove the surface oils. The surfaces are then coated with unthickened epoxy and then with thickened epoxy. With wood glue both surfaces are coated. I hope this is of some help. I just subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

      Thanks always wear a face shield, unless it is a tiny turning and even then if you feel like the piece is unstable.

    Nice vase Erik. Did you sand the staves and slats before glue-up to remove saw marks? One more question, have you tried a tapered stave vessel? I mean a vessel with say a 4" diameter at one end and 2 1/2" at the other end. I'm interested in the procedure of tapering each stave to achieve such a vessel. Another idea I had was to taper the vase on both ends with a solid ring at the widest point. It might be fun to try something like that.
    BTW I'm glad you weren't injured too bad. I always wear my face shield, especially after a small chunk of wood flew off and hit the top of my mask. Be careful guys!!!

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      An easier way to do the tapered version is to start with thicker stock and turn it away to achieve the taper. They make router bits for doing multi faceted wooden bowls, buckets and more. They are a vee bit with different angles for 6, 8 and 12 sided objects and the bits are relatively inexpensive..

      No sanding before glueup because I had lots of material to remove and I had pretty good cuts.

    Is that Danish oiled? If so, was it a dark oil or clear?....
    I really want to try dark Danish oil on a curly maple/ walnut segmented barrel.... but I'm afraid of losing contrast between the two woods.
    Have you ever tried dark danish oil over light and dark woods together?

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TThanks D. this was a shine juice and no I have not used dark danish oil on anything. I do friction rub or straight Walnut Oil.

    I am missing something here. Did you glue the base onto end grain? does it hold?

    Erik, is it possible to communicate with you privately? Got some questions about Beads of Courage Bowl construction.

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Look up beads of courage projects and somewhere in there are parameters and designs. I was never able to get my beads of courage bowl to my local children’s hospital. All kinds of turnovers In people handling the program. Hopefully it is better now. Somewhere on their site they have guidelines. I don’t know much about it anymore as I made mine years ago.

      @@ErikAnderson1 Erik, it isn’t about the purpose nor the design of the bowls. Our club has been making them. We are planning to construct them with staves, and are developing a plan to teach our members, using recycled wood which varies in grain structure. However, I am finding that turning the inside of the bowl to be very difficult. If it were cherry or maple, maybe it wouldn’t be so difficult, but with a bowl gouge, spindle gouge, or heavy scraper, it is. So, I was hoping you might have a technique to deal with it. It is essentially finishing the sides of an endgrain turning. Any tips?

    • @ErikAnderson1
      @ErikAnderson1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You might want to do segments instead of staves.

    • @garyjanes2358
      @garyjanes2358 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ErikAnderson1 Thank you for the reply. Initially, thought is that it might be more challenging for some of our newer members. I developed a very simple way to cut consistent staves on the table saw without any jig. (Probably not the first to ever do it like I figured out. After all, the ball point pen was independently developed by at least two people!). But, you have made me rethink…so possibly some of us who can, would provide the rings, and that would be a great step forward. I’ll give that serious consideration!
