This issue is so personal to me. I’ve looked young my whole life. When I met my husband, who is only two years older than me, he got so much flack from his friends, it bordered on bullying. I was 18 and he was 20, but people constantly told him I was basically a child and tried to make him feel creepy. It made me feel so disgusting about myself and destroyed my confidence. I’m grateful that he’s always stood up for me and loved me unapologetically. He’s been clear that I don’t look like a child to him at all and that he sees me as a beautiful woman. My heart breaks for her. Having a high voice like that must make it so hard for her to get the respect that she deserves as an adult.
I actually always looked a bit older due to being very tall, but my face did look young. I could pass as 16 as 14 year old sometimes. Anyways, when I was 15 I met a guy who took me on a date 3 years later. Two years after a small date night I ended up dating him. So basically this guy had a girlfriend, was engaged, was even a student teacher while I was still in school (not my student teacher). Things didn’t last with fiancé, and some time after I turned 18 he asked was I in college, how was I, and was I 18 yet! So many people today would see it as so creepy and say he was gross. He never tried any sexual advances. Ever. He just treated me like a normal person, going to eat, go hang with his family, go hang with friends, converse…
What's funny is I work with a guy who was talking crap on his friend for this exact same thing, where his buddy was dating a girl who was 21 but looked like she could have been under 18, and he was so incredibly pious and judgmental. And then 2 weeks later he starts cracking jokes at lunch about how if there's "grass" on the field then "play ball!" Often it's the most judgmental people that are the guilty of the exact shit they preach about.
Yes i went to pick up my niece at her school im 29 a teacher started telling me off for not tucking in my shirt i happend to be wearing black trousers and white top which was similar to the 6th form uniform... and was almost dragged to class cause i look 16 even though im 29 had to tell them im not a student had to take out my id too to prove. 😂😂 it sucks

I can understand why they would have a good amount of difficulty moving on from the "this is my baby I must protect her" stage of parenting. I feel like most parents kind of naturally move on from that because over the years they see their child growing while also mentally maturing. But her parents didnt get that visual validation so I would imagine its more of a conscious effort to ignore what they see and only rely on her mental advancement. I haven't watched the show, but the clips I've seen seem like they're doing their best to 100% treat her like an adult but it's something they have to consciously work on everyday.

I think a big issue here is that people don’t see her as somebody with a disability they look at her and hear her and register as a child and don’t really question their thought process. She is an adult and as long as the person who she is with treats her with respect and is also an adult it shouldn’t matter.

@@thelestrangelair That veiw point is very wrong. If he has spent time with her, talking with her. He would not see her as a child. But as an adult. You can say that he is attracted to someone who looks like a child, but it would be incorrect to say that he is therefore attracted to children. In my opinion, if you want to be with someone in a genuine relationship just based off how they looked, it would very often, not go well.
This case here, is a very extreme case. Meaning if he saw her from a distance and wanted to establish a relationship, then he is someone to stay away from. But if he gets to learn of her condition and who she actually is, how she actually acts like, then he gets to see her as her adult self.
It is unfortunate, because a lot about love is establishing connections with both the physical and emotional, and that would mean establishing a physical connection with that which resembles a child.
However, you cannot blame either of them for doing what they did, because of the simple fact that they are both adults and not children. And that cannot be discarded. And it will always be wrong to say that it is socially unacceptable for an adult with a childlike appearance to safely engage in adult activities.
I think it is natural for people to be judged based on their physical appearance, and that's how it will always be. And I think when new cases such as these come to light, they should be publicised and shown to the world so they can learn something new, and develop a new consideration to have at the back of their head next time they see what looks like a man and a girl together.

I think her garnering fame is the easiest way out of this mess. Because more and more people will know who she is and therefore how old she is and leave her and her lovers alone.
The sad reality is you’d have to live a secluded life away from A LOT of other people to avoid people getting law enforcement and others involved constantly. Things like going to the park, movies, etc, is just not a gonna be able to be a regular thing unless you are willing to go through the infinite struggles that come with that relationship in a social life.
@Ash 28 if she hadn't gone on tv multiple times I would say her going out more and having certain spots that she frequents so that the staff get to know who she is would be best. Even going to a restaurant/bar ahead of time meeting the manager showing her IDs to avoid any incidents later on. If the community knows her less incidents will happen. I would honestly even introduce myself to the local police so that when they get called and come and see who it is they would just leave.

If anyone deserves to find love and happiness, it's someone who has had the struggles she's had. She is an adult. Speaking as someone who had a bit of a baby-face for most of my life, it's really hard to see yourself as an adult when everyone treats you as a 'youngster'. People still guess my age _at least_ 10 years younger than it is, and that's an improvement. It makes it really hard to be the sort of man you'd want to be when nobody treats you like a man at all. I imagine it's similar for her.

For the first couple of minutes, it was a real mind f#ck seeing her as she looks childlike. I mean she looks like my own daughter. But after turning my inner dad down and seeing the person she is, I felt real sympathy for her and her family. I was in a similar situation i met a girl who look way younger than her actually age everyone thought she was 14 she was 26 at the time. Ok this hits home, I have a daughter that’s “young” looking. She’s a 17 yr old that’s looks 12, stopped growing and also had cancer and had treatment that stunted her growth.
Dating is a concern of mine as I know she’s not on the same level mentally and physically, but she can’t be held back forever. What kind of man would want to date someone who is “fairy like” or child like.

About the 4th store we went into in Arkansas where I was stationed in the Air Force, I blurted out "I wonder if these people know you are older than me!" Should have seen their faces. This is a very sad situation. I am a red blooded American male with a wife a kids. Physical attraction is important in a relationship. Also, One of my kids is an 8yo daughter. No, we're ok with a woman who is 23 years old having a significant other, regardless of her looks. She is 23. You could look like your face got run over by a bus, but you'd still deserve a significant other too. It's not about the fact that she looks like a child. She's not one. The end. I had a precocious puberty and stopped growing around 11-12 years old. I still look 17, but my body still is the same as I was at 12. I'm short and have smaller physical attributes than others my age who are much taller and grew into their bodies. I think she should find someone w/a similar issue as herself because any man dating her is not normal. Why choose to be w/a creep just cuz she wants to date? People should encourage her to be patient. She's barely in her early 20's after all.
I have seen a number of her videos and my heart goes out to her for her condition. However, she is happy and healthy and deserving of love like anyone else. Kudos to him for being tolerant of all the intolerance they receive. I wish her well and hope her life continues to get better and better. This is no different than any other little person in love with a regular sized person.
I feel so bad for Shauna & Chris, but I also feel bad for Shauna’s parents.
It’s bittersweet for any parent to watch their child grow up. I’ll look at the clothes my sons used to fit into and feel emotional. But when your child hasn’t grown, physically, since the age of eight, it has to be harder to recognize and accept the reality that your child is an adult, not an eight-year-old. Not to mention the fact that she’s also a potential target for men with “certain interests.” Of course her parents want to protect her against that.
And to make it even worse, apparently there is something that could of been done back then, that I believe was available that could of prevented this to happen to her, at least from what I read.
I've not watched the show, but I get the feeling she's going to struggle with a lot of the same issues Disney's children stars run into. (Basically falling into the mindset of: "I am no longer a child and I wish for people to see me as an adult, so I will do wildly inappropriate things to prove the point.")

My sister had a friend that had a similar look and situation as Shauna. I felt so bad because to me it was a catch 22. I wouldn't want to date her not because she isn't a nice person or a great personality BUT because she looks like a child. I hope she finds love and from someone that is honestly in love with her for her and not because of the creep factor.
I’m curious to know if her stunted growth has robbed her of her future as well as her stature. Like, will she ever be able to have a family without a surrogate? I’m not sure what’s worse, being perceived as a child for your entire life or never having the capability to experience motherhood in its entirety 😢 having a newborn at home makes this a heart wrenching consideration 😞
What do people want her to do? Remain single for the rest of her life? She’s an adult. Let her live her life.

My Daughter is 20. everyone we meet looks at her and thinks she is 12. there were no major health emergencies that lead to this. her mother me and her worry about the same things Shawna and her family worry about. All we can do is prepare her and hope for the best. she is a smart young woman, and as a disabled Marine I have taught her how to defend herself. she is as i write this is away at school getting ready to live her dream. I am soooooo proud of her and tell her often. i know Shawna will find the right man at some point. I hope the best for her as I do my own daughter.
She deserves happiness, too.
