I went to see my mom in the nursing home, there was an elderly lady, rocking one of these reborn babies, talking to it, cradling it gently. It's apparently very beneficial for elderly dementia patients. I can see how valuable it can be in these circumstances.

Yeah, that feels very different. Giving elderly people with dementia an opportunity to feel that maternal or nurturing feeling.

The nursing home I worked at had one of these I get why etc. But I find them so unnerving and creepy, I held one and it felt exactly like holding a real baby as they make them heavy like a real baby. Cept the thing does not breathe move and is cold...Its like a dead baby I could not hold it for even a minute without feeling freaked out, just gives me the creeps.

@@janawild4582 It helps with the postpartum side of things. Because that need to mother and nurture is still strong with hormones.

    • @BasedZoomer
      @BasedZoomer ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@rodeoswag17 Yeah, many people don't consider that things aren't just "normal" again as soon as the baby is gone. Even an early miscarriage can have hormonal effects lasting somewhere around nine months afterwards.
I can't speak on loss, but I cannot imagine what going through postpartum without my daughter would have been like. It is a very significant time.
I'm not sure if a doll would have helped me in such a scenario, but I can see how it could help some women. And if the doll helps them after a late loss, and they can form a sort of temporary bond with it, they could potentially pump breast milk and donate it since the oxytocin from bonding with the doll would keep milk production up.

As a doll collector myself, I can say that there are different types of doll collectors, and not everyone treats their dolls like their own children. Reborn dolls do creep me out, and I don't collect them at all. Most people who I've seen who have reborn dolls treat them like real babies and it's really scary. I collect American Girl dolls, and not because I'm a "kidult" but I collect them from a more serious stand point. I dont reenact scenes with them like a typical child would play with dolls, but I get them, fix them up, and resell them. I also buy really rare ones fo display on shelves, that's it.. I liked some of the first short you showed about how to take your dolls out in public, however I'd be way to scared to do that myself.

Real babies need formula and diapers. That makes me upset. Formula expires too especially after you open it. You need to use it in like month after its open or its just not as fresh anymore. That makes me mad. My daughter or other mothers with real babies could use it. Its unhealthy to spend thousands on a doll.

I have a friend who lost their child in the womb. She bought a reborn doll, the artist took pictures of her and her boyfriend to make the baby look like her own child. It helps her a lot with grieving, she used to take it in public with her but since she has healed a bit more she does most of the activities with the doll in “safe places”

    • @talongreenlee7704
      @talongreenlee7704 ปีที่แล้ว +33

That just sounds like an unhealthy coping mechanism to me. I obviously sympathize, but if the child is gone, then it’s gone. It’s not good to pretend to yourself like that, especially if it becomes difficult to gradually leave it behind. You gotta learn how to let go of people when you lose them.

This is an example of it being used as a tool in the grieving process. He writes about losing his parents very young & losing his wife to ovarian cancer when their kids were still fairly young.
He says "Say the person 's name. Continue the conversation", so many things that have been real help to me.
There's a poem that talks about the person who has passed away being in another room. For those of us who believe in heaven, that makes a lot of sense. Well Brett, people collect all sorts of things. They do it because it makes them happy. I'm 70 years old and have an extensive doll collection. WHY??????? Because I like them!! I don't take them out or feed them; I enjoy looking at them. I have several reborn baby dolls. They're all from different molds and their creators spend countless hours creating them. They truly are works of art. Hold your judgement for things that truly matter. These people who take their dolls out and "Mother" them are getting something from that experience. They aren't hurting anyone or causing problems. Live and let live, dear Brett.❤

Also, her whole bit about how adults ought to want to settle down, start a family, go out a lot and make several friends etc, and that anybody who doesn't want those things are wrong, just ew. Gross take. Ignorant, extremely narrow minded and honestly just a mean girl take. Judgement like this is why social anxiety exists.
I watch many doll collectors here on TH-cam (mostly LOL OMG dolls as I love them haha!), it's honestly lovely to see others' collections and mostly, their passion and joy! Just like you said too, dolls are art! Somebody/people designed and made these dolls. Even factory produced dolls have had creators design their characters, fashions/appearances etc. It's art!!

As a reborn artist, I'll say: a lot of these go to homes where families have dementia or Alzheimer's. Some of the most heart-breaking requests are from miscarriages or grandparents that really miss their grandbabies but can't get out to see them due to health issues / SUPER long distances. Few artists make any money from doing this; we usually lose money making these. We do it because there's a specific crowd for this and a therapeutic reason for it.
Some of us artists do it because we can't have kids of our own naturally; biology just slaps a big nope on us. Some artists are just beyond child-bearing years. Reborns are very expensive if they're high-end and hyper-realistic. Blank kits can be well over $100 for simple vinyl. Adults who buy them literally have to be adulting to be able to afford them. While people say: "Why don't they adopt and pour all of that money onto a needy kid?" A lot of times these are individuals who have significant barriers to adopting an actual child.
These aren't the kind you generally play with a lot. Most of these are for passive holding and looking at. They are weighted and sometimes heated with the hope that, at least in dementia or depression patients, the physical stimulation, smell (we implant scent packets), or warmth of the little doll will trigger important memories they wouldn't otherwise be able to access. The painting process takes time on most hyper-realistic ones the paint is fragile and difficult to properly seal. The hair is also difficult to seal as some of it is painted-on and the majority of it is rooted in by hand, so it isn't as though someone can "play" with them a lot without completely destroying them. When you're paying 1K+ (and sometimes 10K or more) for these, you definitely do not child-play with them. Not every reborn is of this quality, and I'm certain with the market being flooded with artists, they might even come closer to $150. It's not an art that's going to make ya money; you'll be losing it to help others. Making these is truly an act of love. The rooting alone can take days or even weeks and is done by hand, fiber by fiber.
Some of these dolls are made from 3D scans (with the blessing of the parents, of course!) of real infants and others are hand-sculpted by amazing artists. The majority of these dolls are made of vinyl, but some are made from exceptionally high-end silicone and are much more difficult to paint, clean, maintain, and make. There's more than meets the eye with reborns... which sort of makes this disappointing to see as dailywire content. If you want to report on this, look into the scam knock-offs of these; folks who shamelessly pirate this art and take advantage of this clientele. They offer a grieving mother a picture of someone else's art, say they'll deliver, and ship out a 200(ish) dollar nightmare-baby that makes Chucky look sweet. An artist can spend months sculpting a single figure, only produce a few of them for the sake of them being unique, and then have some Chinese black-market scammer get their hands on one and mass-distribute it after making a mold. For this reason, actual reborn artists are hard to approach and usually have a designated client list. (So please be careful if anyone watched this and suddenly wants one. You can get scammed VERY easily in this niche.)
Another reason these are made: movie sets. A lot of people don't want actual infants to have to suffer through filming and/or need an infant to look the same for... much longer than it should. You can ask some established artists and they can boast about what shows their sculpts / renditions show up in. The reasons are far less "creepy" than people think and usually have very tragic roots. It's really best not to judge this kind of thing. This really waxes as a buzzfeed clickbait video; it lacks only the, "DOCTORS HATE IT!" tag. Maybe it's satire, maybe it's not. Whatever it is, it's free speech, so power to ya. Just thought I'd provide some industry insider insight.

I’m sure brett is at least semi aware of the therapy side of this, as later in the video she did say she was trying to understand the mentality of wanting these dolls. What isn’t okay is when fully able bodied people use them as cute accessories, as if babies are accessories. Yes, it’s at least good that these women don’t treat real children this way, but it’s still not healthy to form parental attachments to objects, and therefore should not be encouraged or even accepted. This is beyond adults enjoying certain things they loved in childhood, it’s just creepy and unhealthy.

THANK YOU for writing this! I'm a Reborn artist too (as well as a watercolorist). I agree with what Brett (and the rest of the Daily Wire) says 99.9% of the time, but I thought this one hit a bit below the belt. I'm on the Autism Spectrum and am also biologically unable to have children (and adoption is not an option either). Making these dolls for myself and others has been very healing, comforting, and enjoyable. I've also made and donated quite a few to nursing homes, where the residents absolutely adore them (even the men), and the staff love them because of how much they calm the Alzheimers patients. You are quite right that most of us make them at a financial loss and do it out of love. I will never understand why people find the dolls (or the people who love them) creepy, and it really irks me that whenever someone (outside the Reborn community) makes a video about them, they ALWAYS choose the most extreme, out-in-left-field examples. The overwhelming majority of Reborn collectors don't do ANY of the things portrayed in these Tik Toks, and like you pointed out, they also have to live as ADULTS in the real world with jobs and well-managed lives in order to afford these dolls. It has nothing to do with "regressing" or refusing to grow up. Thank you for writing such balanced response!

I’ve always had nurturing motherly traits and I find therapy in doing motherly things such as caring for a baby however I am no where near stable enough or mature enough to have a child anytime soon . That doesn’t make me weird or any less of a human being I just do what makes me happy. Honestly it’s taught me that having a child before I’m truly ready and stable is straight up selfish so I get to be a “mother” and get practice in without having the full responsibilities of being a mom and without being pregnant as a teen

I remember back in high school in choir we would sometimes visit the local retirement home to sing a few songs and spend time with our elders. One image really stuck out to me. One elderly woman in her 80s was sitting off to the side in a wheelchair gently rocking a baby doll wrapped in a blanket. It brought a tear to my eye to see that.
I don't know her name or her story. Perhaps she had some form of dementia, or perhaps was lonely and needed the comfort. But just watching her hold this doll so gently in her trembling arms made me realize how deep our desire is to care and nurture. Who knows when her family had last visited her? But she was probably a mother at one point. And she wanted to relive that in some small way. I don't know if she's still alive, but I wish her well.
There are times and places when such things are acceptable. But to walk around pretending to raise a baby and buying diapers and baby formula for it? It's a bit sad. I'm reluctant to judge these people because the image of that elderly woman is so ingrained in my head. But it's clear these women have some underlying problem that is causing this behaviour. I hope they are able to move past this phase and become the grown women they're meant to be.

I think these fit in some places. I lost my daughter at 35 weeks.. it was so hard losing my baby and leaving her at the hospital and going home after birth without a baby.
It was hard deciding what to do with her body knowing I can’t have her in my arms where she belongs.
I have the blanket she was wrapped in, and it feels so empty holding it without her.
But idk the thought of when I’m really missing her, to have a baby doll to put under that blanket, to pretend just for that moment of break down…. Idk it sounds more comforting than just her blanket.
ALSO I do think there’s uses in nursing homes. I know some humans just crave nurturing something, even if maybe that can’t care for it like it needs… but maybe having a baby doll, that doesn’t have “needs” and can be cared for when the person needs that, could also be a good idea.

    She was an infant photographer.
These life-like dolls are good for practicing poses with a fake model in replacement of a real baby.
The dolls joints function relatively similar to a real baby and the doll looks real enough to picture what your final product might look like if it were a real baby.
Its most useful trait is its realistic weight and joints, making the photographer have to practice delicate care over the doll, gently moving it into the position that is desiried without potentially harming a real baby in the process.

@@amylynnhunt55 In defense, borrowing a real baby for practicing infant photography isn't very practical (and for some it can be tricky to find a mother who's willing to let them borrow her baby).
With a real baby, not only will you have less time to practice, you will also need to schedule it.
The mother would need to be present (to feed the infant).
So much more setup would be needed to start the process (room temperature control).
And the child could potentially be in a sour mood that day, which would ruin the entire practice session.
I do agree that practicing with real infants is necessary; real hands on experience is irreplaceable.
but having a good foundation of things that can be learned without hindering a baby is also very useful.

Hi 👋🏻 reborn baby collector here. I just wanted to respectfully clarify a few things. We do not use real baby formula. I have a video on my channel explaining how we make the formula look so realistic, and sometimes we will have people to donate props to us like empty formula cans and things like that. It's not real formula. Secondly, the special things that you see us do for videos with the dolls are not things that we do 24/7. We do it for entertainment purposes and for video purposes, but we are not getting up in the middle of the night to change a doll's diaper or taking the doll everywhere we go. A lot of the things we do is to share with each other in our doll community. It's a fun hobby and we don't expect everyone to get it, but I have to say it's a little disheartening for people to assume that we treat the babies as if they're real 24/7. It is an art form and a beautiful hobby. Yes lots of people use any type of hobby as an outlet for stress management. I personally don't see anything wrong with that. I'm an empty nester who has grown children. I work a full-time job and very much contribute to society. For me, it's not about not wanting to adult. It's about having an outlet to de-stress after "adulting" all day. Oh and as for the diapers, I usually will do cloth diapers or sometimes we will buy a bag of disposable diapers which will last an extremely long time because we are not changing the dolls diaper every 2 hours or something like that and then yes we do buy cute outfits for our dolls but we're not changing our dolls daily and buying huge wardrobes for them all the time. Also, when I'm done with baby items like clothing, and other types of props, I donate that to ministries and such to help others. So, no it's not wasteful. Also, some of the carseats you see us have are expired so no real baby can use them. I have a car seat as a prop for photo or video purposes on my channel that is expired and missing the base. Everyone has things they enjoy. Not everyone likes the same things. It's not about needing to grow up. We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing. Live life and be happy. Spread that joy to others. Make others happy as well. As collectors,we do it for the sake of video and picture purposes and share them within our community to bring joy to other doll collectors because we enjoy sharing things like that with each other. We have so much discord going on in our community right now because there are differing opinions about whether it's ethical to own counterfeit kits over authentic. Me personally, I only collect authentic because I think that's the way to go with anything.. anyways I said all that to say this, we have so much going on within our doll community about issues within the hobby and so it seems that we have a lot of opposing forces of people who are not in the hobby misunderstanding things.. so yes we do spend a lot of time defending our hobby... I just tell people yes, I understand that not everybody likes the same thing, and just because something is different from what you like it doesn't mean that it's weird it just means it's different. Live and let live. Harm none. 💜

Then I learned that she was very very sick and she wasn’t even going to have the chance to get married much less have a child of her own. She was a very sweet woman, and she took her doll in public also. It was just a tool to help her cope with her illness and her motherly instinct. She eventually passed away but she was a very sweet young woman and she would have been a great momma.
But yes some of these girls just haven’t grown and then couples.. I mean most of Gen z shouldn’t be having kids anyway so I’d rather them play with dolls than abort their kids or encouraging them to be LGBT.

You do realize that a child is much more expensive, and the person raising that child needs to be mature, responsible, and capable of doing so. People getting these dolls have so many different reasons why they may purchase or collect. But to use this logic, you have to take in consideration that at the end of the day these are dolls, not real children. Even if someone were to treat their Reborn like a real baby, it still isn’t. It cannot get sick, it cannot talk, it cannot eat, and it cannot poop. It’s roleplay, and it isn’t harmful. Real babies come with responsibility and need to be unconditionally loved.

Raising a child and having a reborn are not the same thing and if you think they are, then you need help. Jeeez.

Edit for those who think I don’t understand the point of the video:
I GET IT. I SAID ITS WEIRD.
These people are most likely doing it for attention, and that alone makes it cringe. But there are dolls that are used for coping, so still, don’t judge until you know what’s going on with someone.
My comment is addressing “kid adults” because this isn’t the first time she’s said things about adults who like things that society has decided are just for kids. You do know that a lot of these people purchase these babies because they cannot concieve children, or lost a child themselves? Also, many may collect because they’re not able to care for a real baby. Whether that be financially or mentally capable. If they cannot differentiate the difference between a real living child and a life-like doll, then that’s an issue within itself. Most people that own these dolls, know that they’re not real. I’m not saying it’s impossible, and I do believe your concern is valid. However, the majority of people purchasing these dolls know that they’re dolls at the end of the day, they just chose to treat them with care.

However I do enjoy still playing with my current reborn doll. I will say that I do not buy real formula for my reborn doll because she’s not a real baby & I also don’t change her diaper. When my child was a baby I didn’t enjoy changing his diaper back to back when he pooped or pee or threw up. Real baby’s and reborn dolls are not the same and I appreciate that. It’s just fun to play dress up with a baby doll who never grows out of clothes , & bonus my reborn doll is a great cock blocker when I’m out in public men would come up to me and approach me all the time now when I’m out in public men don’t harass me for my number as much or give me theirs. It’s so peaceful going outside with my son now! 😊 So in my book it’s a win win. I understand it’s not the norm for adult women to play with baby dolls but it’s pros and cons to everything. Some men still play video games even though it’s something they started when they were a child. Everybody’s Different!

I've actually made a reborn doll. I really enjoy art - especially lifelike art. It was a really interesting process to undertake, I learnt so much about colour theory, human anatomy (vein placement etc), and their use within the film industry. The lady who taught me produced dolls for neighbours and home and away (two household Australian TV shows). My Mum now keeps my doll in my old bedroom. I think the dolls make for good props in movies/films, where children shouldn't be exploited. They serve a positive purpose. I do think it's a concern when people take them too seriously (as another commenter mentioned purchasing formula for dolls - they're dolls, not people lol). But at the end of the day, it's a hobby, and everyone I've met in person who creates or owns these dolls, are very aware that they are dolls. A majority of the people have actually retired women looking for a hobby on the side, interesting enough!

Most reborn owners do not buy real formula, they make fake formula. They also don't spend all day every day "caring for their dolls" They make a 10 minute video and then put the doll aside. Sometimes the funniest part of taking the doll out in public to see the reactions. But I haven't "played" with my dolls for over a year, maybe things have changed. Some people collect them as art and some use them as therapy. I will also add that I am not in a position to care for others babies nor do I know anyone with babies. My children are grown up so having a baby is out of the question. It is just a hobby, some people paint on canvas some on dolls.

I do, however, still have all my dolls from my childhood on a special shelf. I love realistic baby dolls. I got one as a Christmas present, and bought the other two, one of which was half-price because I knew the artist and she was moving, anyway.
Before you judge, hear me out: I wouldn't go taking them anywhere, like to the shops or on a plane! Playing with dolls is practice for me, for the day I do have my own children. I didnt buy actual formula. I bought her clothes from yard sales. That being said I have PCOS which makes it very difficult to have children and I had wanted to be a mother from an extremely young age. I still 15 yrs later have not had a child. Not from a lack of trying. Adoption is not an option. So most of the time I equate it to when chicken farmers would give a wooden egg to a broody chicken. So if I was sad or "broody" for lack of a better term/analogy I would change her clothes and "take care of her." I no longer have her. Unfortunately my dog also decided to play with her and ate her hand. I asked for another one for christmas but got a cricut instead 😆😆😆

That is a perfect example of why these things are actually useful. I don't think people should go to the extreme but it's very therapeutic for the people that have them. It's kinda like having a therapy animal but doesn't have to be taken care of lol.

Just like everything, it's the extremists that make it weird. My sister and I (to a lesser extent, I haven't done anything in the hobby for years) are in the doll hobby, and a lot of the dolls in the hobby are used for photography, art, these baby reborns are used as therapy dolls, but those that go too far by buying things like diapers and formula are odd and taking resources from real babies. It's unfortunate that it's the ones that take it too far that are the most vocal that then give a negative first impression.

There's nothing wrong with doing things a bit differently. It's ok to do pure and childlike things that hurt nobody so long as you're doing everything else you need to as an adult. I collect dolls. I don't carry them around (openly) but it is so harmless tbh lol.

omg it's been so long since I have seen these. As a kid living in Asia I saw this during the time when tiktok wasn't even here. Teachers in China taught us about this and said most of them have a coping problem when their dead children could be transformed into dolls. Now I see how far this has gone. And before I was just a kid in China thinking I also wanted to follow these "adults" and begged my mother for a "reborn" doll. Thank god my Asian mom never allowed it. (sorry if my English isn't good, it is my second language)

😂 I am a sculptor / doll maker - I create life like silicone dolls - why do you care of people like dolls ?
The fact that people like dolls - creates a whole industry for many artists to earn a living staying home and making dolls -
You are really mischaracterizing who our doll collectors are -
But it’s ok - if you don’t understand it -
Maybe interview someone who creates these dolls -
The tsa thing is for real :) lol
I fly to doll shows with dolls - it’s always interesting to see how people react -

They are like poseable arts, and to me, these dolls is like the perfect display and platform when I want to create. At the same time… I don’t really understand American girls nor reborns but I can imagine someone being as passionate as me just for different reasons. 😂😂😂

When my daughter was around 10 years old, about 20 years ago, I bought her one of those type of dolls. Not long after that, we took a flight to visit some family. Because the doll was too big to keep in her seat, we put it up in the luggage bin. One lady started getting a bit upset until she realized it was a doll. We all had a good laugh about it.

I admit I am 37 and have a reborn doll and I am NOT crazy. I have her to help with my anxiety and depression because even though she's not real she gives off the impression of holding a "real baby". I just dress my reborn up in newborn clothes but stop when it comes to formula and stuff. That's a bit too much. And yes, they are expensive. I paid $325 for mine.

She is 3 pounds 3.5oz and 14'' Her name is Penelope she is the Blessing Awake by Marita Winters kit you can see her on my channel/ community page but sometimes reborn are used for: Reborn dolls are also beneficial for people who have lost a child. Reborns can provide a sense of comfort and connection and by holding and caring for a reborn doll, can be a way for them to feel like they are still able to nurture and care for their child, even though they are no longer physically present.

At first, I was gonna defend them because lots of perfectly normal, well-adjusted adults collect things like vintage action figures, magic cards, comic books, or specialty board games or whatever. But this is entirely different, and disturbing.
As a man who has a bunch of framed, vintage movie posters, this kind of thing makes me feel really normal.
