*Y'all, there is a difference between therapy dolls (or just collecting them as a hobby) and then treating these dolls like they're actually real (taking them out in public, buying them formula etc.). There's healthy, and there's unhealthy. There's sane, and there's insane. This isn't hard.*

As a doll collector myself, I can say that there are different types of doll collectors, and not everyone treats their dolls like their own children. Reborn dolls do creep me out, and I don't collect them at all. Most people who I've seen who have reborn dolls treat them like real babies and it's really scary. I collect American Girl dolls, and not because I'm a "kidult" but I collect them from a more serious stand point. I dont reenact scenes with them like a typical child would play with dolls, but I get them, fix them up, and resell them. I also buy really rare ones fo display on shelves, that's it.. I liked some of the first short you showed about how to take your dolls out in public, however I'd be way to scared to do that myself.

Real babies need formula and diapers. That makes me upset. Formula expires too especially after you open it. You need to use it in like month after its open or its just not as fresh anymore. That makes me mad. My daughter or other mothers with real babies could use it. Its unhealthy to spend thousands on a doll.

Well Brett, people collect all sorts of things. They do it because it makes them happy. I'm 70 years old and have an extensive doll collection. WHY??????? Because I like them!! I don't take them out or feed them; I enjoy looking at them. I have several reborn baby dolls. They're all from different molds and their creators spend countless hours creating them. They truly are works of art. Hold your judgement for things that truly matter. These people who take their dolls out and "Mother" them are getting something from that experience. They aren't hurting anyone or causing problems. Live and let live, dear Brett.❤

Gross take. Ignorant, extremely narrow minded and honestly just a mean girl take. Judgement like this is why social anxiety exists.
I watch many doll collectors here on TH-cam (mostly LOL OMG dolls as I love them haha!), it's honestly lovely to see others' collections and mostly, their passion and joy! Just like you said too, dolls are art! Somebody/people designed and made these dolls. Even factory produced dolls have had creators design their characters, fashions/appearances etc. It's art!!

My mother had a medically necessary hysterectomy due to cancer when she was 38. I was in the single digits at the time, and she didn't expect me to be her last baby. She got a reborn doll shortly after the procedure.
I asked her about it recently (twenty years after the fact) and she said that sometimes it was just cathartic to hold it while she cried. "Like saying goodbye to something you can't have anymore."

Edit: Just so people understand a little better, I was a 16 year old girl suffering the loss of my baby and I was undergoing therapy. I only used the doll to hold when I missed my baby who passed on and the doll could never replace them. Never took it out in public, never really told other people till now. As a reborn artist, I'll say: a lot of these go to homes where families have dementia or Alzheimer's. Some of the most heart-breaking requests are from miscarriages or grandparents that really miss their grandbabies but can't get out to see them due to health issues / SUPER long distances. Few artists make any money from doing this; we usually lose money making these. We do it because there's a specific crowd for this and a therapeutic reason for it.
Some of us artists do it because we can't have kids of our own naturally; biology just slaps a big nope on us. Some artists are just beyond child-bearing years. Reborns are very expensive if they're high-end and hyper-realistic. Blank kits can be well over $100 for simple vinyl. Adults who buy them literally have to be adulting to be able to afford them. While people say: "Why don't they adopt and pour all of that money onto a needy kid?" A lot of times these are individuals who have significant barriers to adopting an actual child.
These aren't the kind you generally play with a lot. Most of these are for passive holding and looking at. They are weighted and sometimes heated with the hope that, at least in dementia or depression patients, the physical stimulation, smell (we implant scent packets), or warmth of the little doll will trigger important memories they wouldn't otherwise be able to access. The painting process takes time on most hyper-realistic ones the paint is fragile and difficult to properly seal. The hair is also difficult to seal as some of it is painted-on and the majority of it is rooted in by hand, so it isn't as though someone can "play" with them a lot without completely destroying them. When you're paying 1K+ (and sometimes 10K or more) for these, you definitely do not child-play with them. Not every reborn is of this quality, and I'm certain with the market being flooded with artists, they might even come closer to $150. It's not an art that's going to make ya money; you'll be losing it to help others. Making these is truly an act of love. The rooting alone can take days or even weeks and is done by hand, fiber by fiber.
Some of these dolls are made from 3D scans (with the blessing of the parents, of course!) of real infants and others are hand-sculpted by amazing artists. The majority of these dolls are made of vinyl, but some are made from exceptionally high-end silicone and are much more difficult to paint, clean, maintain, and make. There's more than meets the eye with reborns... which sort of makes this disappointing to see as dailywire content. If you want to report on this, look into the scam knock-offs of these; folks who shamelessly pirate this art and take advantage of this clientele. They offer a grieving mother a picture of someone else's art, say they'll deliver, and ship out a 200(ish) dollar nightmare-baby that makes Chucky look sweet. An artist can spend months sculpting a single figure, only produce a few of them for the sake of them being unique, and then have some Chinese black-market scammer get their hands on one and mass-distribute it after making a mold. For this reason, actual reborn artists are hard to approach and usually have a designated client list. (So please be careful if anyone watched this and suddenly wants one. You can get scammed VERY easily in this niche.)
Another reason these are made: movie sets. A lot of people don't want actual infants to have to suffer through filming and/or need an infant to look the same for... much longer than it should. You can ask some established artists and they can boast about what shows their sculpts / renditions show up in. The reasons are far less "creepy" than people think and usually have very tragic roots. It's really best not to judge this kind of thing. This really waxes as a buzzfeed clickbait video; it lacks only the, "DOCTORS HATE IT!" tag. Maybe it's satire, maybe it's not. Whatever it is, it's free speech, so power to ya. Just thought I'd provide some industry insider insight.

    • @just1desi
      @just1desi ปีที่แล้ว +50

I was thinking great art such talented baby renditions must be great for tv sets the whole way through. This isn't sexual. They aren't hurting anyone. Everyone doing this seems able to afford basic needs. Leave them alone as long as they aren't buying formula. They'll move on eventually.

I’m sure brett is at least semi aware of the therapy side of this, as later in the video she did say she was trying to understand the mentality of wanting these dolls. What isn’t okay is when fully able bodied people use them as cute accessories, as if babies are accessories. Yes, it’s at least good that these women don’t treat real children this way, but it’s still not healthy to form parental attachments to objects, and therefore should not be encouraged or even accepted. This is beyond adults enjoying certain things they loved in childhood, it’s just creepy and unhealthy.

THANK YOU for writing this! I'm a Reborn artist too (as well as a watercolorist). I agree with what Brett (and the rest of the Daily Wire) says 99.9% of the time, but I thought this one hit a bit below the belt. I'm on the Autism Spectrum and am also biologically unable to have children (and adoption is not an option either). Making these dolls for myself and others has been very healing, comforting, and enjoyable. I've also made and donated quite a few to nursing homes, where the residents absolutely adore them (even the men), and the staff love them because of how much they calm the Alzheimers patients. You are quite right that most of us make them at a financial loss and do it out of love. I will never understand why people find the dolls (or the people who love them) creepy, and it really irks me that whenever someone (outside the Reborn community) makes a video about them, they ALWAYS choose the most extreme, out-in-left-field examples. The overwhelming majority of Reborn collectors don't do ANY of the things portrayed in these Tik Toks, and like you pointed out, they also have to live as ADULTS in the real world with jobs and well-managed lives in order to afford these dolls. It has nothing to do with "regressing" or refusing to grow up. Thank you for writing such balanced response!

You do realize that a child is much more expensive, and the person raising that child needs to be mature, responsible, and capable of doing so. People getting these dolls have so many different reasons why they may purchase or collect. But to use this logic, you have to take in consideration that at the end of the day these are dolls, not real children. Even if someone were to treat their Reborn like a real baby, it still isn’t. It cannot get sick, it cannot talk, it cannot eat, and it cannot poop. It’s roleplay, and it isn’t harmful. Real babies come with responsibility and need to be unconditionally loved.

    • @Rat_Queen86
      @Rat_Queen86 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Maybe the people with reborns don’t want to adopt and shouldn’t be forced to? Have you any idea what happens to children who aren’t loved? You can’t just shove a child into a home where someone collects dolls as an art piece and expect it to work out. Raising a child and having a reborn are not the same thing and if you think they are, then you need help. Jeeez.

That doesn’t make me weird or any less of a human being I just do what makes me happy. Honestly it’s taught me that having a child before I’m truly ready and stable is straight up selfish so I get to be a “mother” and get practice in without having the full responsibilities of being a mom and without being pregnant as a teen

Then I learned that she was very very sick and she wasn’t even going to have the chance to get married much less have a child of her own. She was a very sweet woman, and she took her doll in public also. It was just a tool to help her cope with her illness and her motherly instinct. She eventually passed away but she was a very sweet young woman and she would have been a great momma.
But yes some of these girls just haven’t grown and then couples.. I mean most of Gen z shouldn’t be having kids anyway so I’d rather them play with dolls than abort their kids or encouraging them to be LGBT.

My grandma has one and it helps with her dementia drastically. If its not harming anyone, actually, helping ppl why let it effect you this so much? I've actually made a reborn doll. I really enjoy art - especially lifelike art. It was a really interesting process to undertake, I learnt so much about colour theory, human anatomy (vein placement etc), and their use within the film industry. The lady who taught me produced dolls for neighbours and home and away (two household Australian TV shows). My Mum now keeps my doll in my old bedroom. I think the dolls make for good props in movies/films, where children shouldn't be exploited. They serve a positive purpose. I do think it's a concern when people take them too seriously (as another commenter mentioned purchasing formula for dolls - they're dolls, not people lol). But at the end of the day, it's a hobby, and everyone I've met in person who creates or owns these dolls, are very aware that they are dolls. A majority of the people have actually retired women looking for a hobby on the side, interesting enough!

I can understand for dementia and such, but I don't believe this is good for the grieving process in the long run. This type of coping reminds me of taxidermied pets. It's not grieving, it's avoiding grieving.
I saw one where the mom tragically had a stillborn and was very traumatized so she bought the doll and bonded with it and she was going places with the doll treating it like her baby and she had 2 children. The kids looked terrified, like they knew something was wrong with mommy. As someone who had a severely mentally ill mother, it's extremely unsettling, confusing and terrifying when your parent is compromised, you feel anxious constantly, you know something is wrong and you're at the mercy of an unreliable and incompetent caretaker.

With a doll she can go days without touching the fake baby and no harm will happen. These fake babies are a great help to helping the elderly and mothers who have lost their babies. It really helps and I had one years ago before I had my two kids. I use these in my child development classes instead of eggs.

Absolutely it is odd. I had one. Her name was Savannah. It was in 2008. My husband bought her for me for Christmas. I was not as extreme as some. I didnt take her places. I didnt buy actual formula. I bought her clothes from yard sales. That being said I have PCOS which makes it very difficult to have children and I had wanted to be a mother from an extremely young age. I still 15 yrs later have not had a child. Not from a lack of trying. Adoption is not an option. So most of the time I equate it to when chicken farmers would give a wooden egg to a broody chicken. So if I was sad or "broody" for lack of a better term/analogy I would change her clothes and "take care of her." I no longer have her. Unfortunately my dog also decided to play with her and ate her hand. I asked for another one for christmas but got a cricut instead 😆😆😆

I understand having reborns as therapy, and even for doll collectors to enjoy a few (not 20+). I am a doll collector myself. I recently bought two cheap (yet beautiful) reborn-like dolls, after I lost a grandchild. I took them out of their boxes, looked at them, held them and returned them to their boxes, because I am not ready yet with the area I will be displaying my dolls in. I have porcelain dolls as gifts from family members. I have barbies, trolls, cupies, bjd's and a few other types. I love my reborns as much as I love any of my other inanimate objects. To me they are things, just dolls. And remember, folks, we are only renting here. We cannot take any of it with us when we go. And we are all leaving sometime, that's inevitable. So I don't fault anyone for having reborns, smart dolls or any other dolls, etc. It's their money and if they have that much to spare, that's their prerogative. What I do take issue with is when people buy formula, diapers, baby food, clothes and equipment that others may need. I remember looking for formula for my grandbaby, going from store to store and finding empty shelves. It's not right for well-to-do families to buy these as luxury items for their hobby while real babies go hungry. And God help anyone that did that during the shortages. I also had trouble finding a car seat in an emergency situation where I had to pick up the baby from the e.r. It would be so much better to take these purchases and donate them to a woman's shelter or the Salvation army or other homeless shelter where they are needed and so much appreciated. This also does a heart good and brings joy to the giver as well as the receiver.

I do realize that's totally different than someone with an intact mind. There used to be a company called "My Twin" where you could send in a couple photos of your child and have a doll made to look like the child! And yes, I think it is very odd for mentally competent adults to be "caring for" dolls.

When I first became aware of these dolls. My understanding was women who couldn't conceive or had lost their baby would have these temporarily to help with their grief. Which I 100% understand and think could be helpful. Grief is a weird thing and there is no "right" way. There is only the path to moving on and staying stuck. Which looks different for everyone, and completely depends on their mental health.
I personally agree that these dolls are works of art. They are like sculpture and statues. Yes it teters into uncanny valley, but if it was made of marble would you feelings change? It is weird that women are trying to make things as realistic as possible instead of just having a baby or adopting. It is also unfair because as they buy 1 time use diapers and formula. It drives up the price for actual mother's and leaves them without good quality resources. That is the start of the road to mental illness and selfishness.
I personally really want babies as well and would love to also have one of these dolls. But more so as a prep/practice or an actual toy. It would also be a cute toy for when my babies grow up and want to play house with it. But until then i'd probably practice doing chores with it strapped to me to get used to moving around without bumping into or hurting my future kiddos.
I completely understand Brett's reaction because we've seen a lot of weird stuff and I see the direction people are taking this(Its only a matter of time, if it hasn't already happened, that people buy these things for grosser intents.) I'm also worried for people who obviously have these maternal instincts but refuse to have kids with out good reason like a history of horrible mental or physical illness.

I'm 16 and was rust telling my mom the other day how cute American gorl dolls are and how I missed the one I had. I would never buy an American girl doll for my self or ask for one but I like fashion and dressing up and creating outfits. That's why I play fashion games and play the sims and dabble in designing close to the best of my art skills. I almost 17 and I've matured, although I don't thinks it's bad to keep some things from your young childhood or read and buy things from that time for nostalgia. It's is important to realize everyone grows up, there's no need to be obsessed with things from your childhood, like dolls, or that you've just realized your an adult.

using these dolls as a therapy, collecting them or playing make belief definitely seem bizzare at first but it doesn't seem to harm other people in society and only affects the person's immediate family at best. The benefits and the losses seem to be personal, so its quite harsh to label it as a 'epidemic'. I first saw these dolls being made for mothers who lost their newborn babies but wanted a keepsake to remember them and mourn them, so its more sensitive than adults playing around with fake babies
Edit: even if is an adult playing with a fake baby, there is no need to be so concerned, there are many harmful hobbies in the world like recreational drug use which need more attention than fake babies

Whilst I agree some take this way too far, there are certain benefits to be gained from these reborn dolls. I suffer severe depression and anxiety. Ive tried counselling, mindfulness and meditation and, of course, I am on anti-depressents. I am also 66 with adult children and grandchildren. I own one doll. She lives in a drawer under my bed. When I feel overwhelmed, am having a difficult day or feel some days are just 'too much', I go upstairs, get the doll and hold it. I then do breathing exercises and it really does help me to calm down. I sometimes even find myself patting its back in time with my breathing. It has also given me the push to go back to my hobby of knitting and crocheting, which again, is therapeutic. Do I take the doll out of my room? No. Does anyone know about my therapy doll apart from my husband? No. However, it has helped me more rhan any other type of coping mechanism I've tried so far and seeing the drawer slowly filling with the blankets, etc I make for it gives me a sense of satisfaction. I will agree with your comments regarding people spending ridiculous amounts of money on these dolls and I would NEVER let my children see me with it, let alone go out in public, but lets be clear, theyre not just for the elderly with dementia! They can be therapeutic and soothing for people dealing with a lot of stress and/or mental health problems. My reborn is a tool, nothing more, nothing less but each to their own. As a woman, there is always so much golden marketing pushed about how having kids is sooooo beautiful and rewarding, without actually considering the mental, financial and physical fitness of the person you are talking to.
I’d rather dolls any day than actual kids growing up in households where the parents regret having them, do not love them and have to fake it because they rushed in too early because “it’s what you’re supposed to do”.
No. It is not. That’s a miserable life for everyone. Kids know when they are not loved and wanted. Only be a parent if you WANT to be.

I think you're talking about the reborn babies. They are made for women who have experienced stillbirth and lost a child. Also, they use them in nursing homes for therapy.

Playing with dolls is better than bringing real babies into the world and neglecting them or abandoning them are not raising them. So many unwanted pregnancies and babies. She made a lot of sense,, because wanting someone to keep you company isn’t a good enough reason to have a baby. Cuz poop and constant crying isn’t cute unless you’re totally ready to commit, babies deserve the best.

How many people have I walked by in the world and it’s actually been a doll in the stroller?! 😱
To add: Brett made a comment about women collecting these dolls, treating them like trophies, etc. I would much rather someone do that to a doll than to children. I know women who treat their children like dolls instead of real people… So, I’ll allow it. 😂

I’ve heard the same things said about my furby collection and I recently got into reborns. My question is: How is this affecting you? Why don’t people just allow others to enjoy things? I’m constantly ridiculed for my interests whether is a bit odd like reborns or furbys or something more mainstream like Taylor Swift. Let people enjoy things!!!!! There doesn’t have to be a reason! It isn’t hurting anyone except in rare instances like with real formula. Other than that, there are a lot bigger things to worry about than adults enjoying things. That doesn’t just turn off once you turn eighteen. From a hate filled perspective, so many things people enjoy are weird!! Sports are weird, why do so many people enjoy watching strangers throw a ball around?? Cosplay is weird, why do people spend so much money to look like someone else? Typically only for videos and pictures? Fashion is weird, you don’t ‘need’ expensive fancy clothes. But people enjoy that stuff!!! And that’s okay!!!! The world would be a much better place if people worried about actual issues rather than dogging on people for simply and harmlessly enjoying things that don’t hurt anyone.

So as a infertile woman, these Reborn Doll babies are very familiar to me. I've known many women who lost their babies, and they get their likeness made in these dolls. They use them as a way to cope without having their child. Many use the Reborn dolls to also cope with ongoing infertility. I've known women who every year, and I mean EVERY year, they would go and buy an entire nursery like they are expecting a baby. I'm talking the furniture, diapers/wipes/formula, EVERYTHING. For a baby that isn't coming. And they set it up, and then sit in that room.... And cry. And then they get rid of the whole room, donate/giveaway etc.... And start it over again.
I never agreed with them. I feel that it damages women and their loss more than anything.
But frankly they terrify me 🤣

13:09 ok ok omgggg usually I always questioned when you reacted to this stuff if you were also judgy about age regression but you just earned my respect! Age regression for example is now like a trend which pisses me off because I do it from trauma and it’s not 24/7 I been doing it for a while I only found out I did it when I was 13.. it’s to cope with truama and to remember my past while talking to a therapist I hate that some people do it just because they don’t wanna grow up it pisses me off cause most people actually had a childhood but just don’t wanna act like an adult it disgusts me… I definitely respect you now I kinda get where you coming from

I've always felt weird about people taking them in public but in your own home do what you want. I don't think it's gonna stop people from having real children because if you'd rather a doll, you're not ready to be a parent anyway.

Only in the west can this be possible. Motherhood is respect elsewhere and treated as a great achievement. Feminism pushed careerism and fear in western women so push they are broken and doing this.

It's therapeutic aids to help women through infertility, miscarriage and loss of a child, as well as anxiety and depression and other mental disorders. But mostly people just use them like a collection and have fun it's not bad even kids have fun too My sister was Recommend by her therapist a reborn doll for her separation anxiety.

I’ve been dreading seeing you make a video about this Brett because I actually make these dolls and I have for years. I think a lot of collectors go a little far but for most this is literally just a collectors item, just like how people collect memorabilia or other collectible items. Many collectors will buy my dolls to display behind a glass cabinet, much like a sculpture or ornament. Some have bought memorial dolls from me, to have a resemblance of their lost child. I think the percentage of people who treat these dolls as if they are real is small, and I am certain they don’t do it all the time. But even if they did, I’d they want to play with a doll in the privacy of their own home, they aren’t harming anyone so I personally don’t see the problem. To be quite honest I’m a little offended. These dolls have been around for years and years and it’s only not TikTok is around that they have become known to others. I definitely don’t see it as a ‘trend’. It is a tight nit community of people who just enjoy the beauty of the artwork that reborn artists like me spend hours creating. It honestly is just an innocent hobby. The hate my community has received on TikTok has been horrendous and very unnecessary, and now a TH-cam video 😖 I fear the new wave of hate this may cause. Reborns are very much a subject that you won’t understand unless you talk to collectors and artists. Of course, everyone is allowed an opinion but when the majority of us just enjoy these dolls as collectors items and then get spoken about like we’re a bunch of creeps or baby obsessed crazies, it is so frustrating. I have found so much community, hope and happiness since finding your channel, being able to meet likeminded people and it has become a safe space for me but this has honestly made me feel just as judged and attacked as I do everywhere else, all for creating these pieces of art that everyone else finds creepy and don’t understand

Why does it matter to you? They aren't hurting anyone, people should be able to have dolls without receiving backlash 💀💀

My cousin lost her 3 month old premie. She wasn't handling the situation well and someone recommended this therapy doll. She rejected this vehemently for herself, but did see benefit for others. I have also seen the therapeutic benefits for some elderly folks as well. This, however, is so strange.
