i just watched the last video, was surprised to see this, doesn't feel like it's been a week :p
This may sound dumb but I never associated the 7 dwarfs or the oompa loompas with real people with dwarfism I just viewed them as fictional creatures, my brain subconsciously made a distinction between reality and fiction and didn't realise how fiction is based on reality and how that is hurtful to the community :(
I'm pretty certain Oompa Loompas were originally based off slaves, and the only connection they have to dwarfism is the actors who played them in the movies. The modern day book illustrations don't look like dwsrfism at all.
Actually this is not true what she said imho... Dwarfes have existed in tales for years... In Europe almost every culture had dwarfes tales...
Very much the same with me. Same thing with any fantasy dwarf. Never have I associated these fantasy races with real life dwarfism because they are presented as something else than human. More mystical I suppose. Maybe it's just benefit of education and good parentkng that I see dwarfism as genetical condition, abnormality in human body but still very much human where fairy tales and fantasy stories make dwarfs, halflings, oompa loompas and what not just different. There might be inspiration drawn from real life but nowadays especially I feel like it's more that fantasy feeds fantasy rather than everything resembling dwarfism in fiction now actually basing itself on the real life examples. I can see why someone would see these as bad representation but personally I have hard time believing many fantasy authors use fantasy dwarfs as projection or reprentation for the real condition. My honest quess is that shorter folks or real dwarfs/little ppl just see themselves in the fantasy creatures because al of us look for identifiable similarities in media anyways and height catches the eye easily. Or that negative experiences like namecalling that often relies on these established media tropes forces that relatability on you.
I have seen a short persons (not dawrfism related but just short) reacting negatively on fantasy dwarf jokes told around them even if its not directed to them nor told in ill will.for example I once laughed out loud because someone played a card called "dwarf toss" in game called munchkin where you can play as generic fantasy dwarf. Short friend of mine had pretty snappy reaction along the lines of "hey, not cool" and it got awkward for a moment. Card in question I believe is a reference to lord of the rings scene. Inques the point I'm trying tl make is that the perception can differ a lot depending what you relate things with in a first place. Where I saw fantasy dwarf thrown in to battle forcefully, my friend saw his height being made fun of. He is a cool guy and it's not like this was a big deal but the moment just stuck with me.
I had this same exact thought. I never viewed those characters that way at all. It’s upsetting to see that people have a more hurtful mindset when seeing these characters but what also hurts is the realization that the creator of the creators probably had that same mindset
I think it's simply because Charlie and the chocolate factory was in many ways the first time we were shown a person with dwarfism in media and it was very caricatured.
I've actually seen the actor who plays the oompa loompa in the movie in an old X Files episode and it freaked me out

I really really appreciate the way Anthony allows disabled people to control their own narrative in these interviews, instead of trying to manipulate them into supporting a narrative he's trying to push on them like most other media about disabled people does. It seems like such a small thing but I feel like as disabled people we are rarely given the chance to speak for ourselves to a mainstream audience, it means a lot to me that Anthony goes out of his way to give us this opportunity when it doesn't inherently benefit him. He wouldn't need to be so empathetic to get views but he chooses to, that means a lot to me.

I love how Cara's brother decided to be her protector and just assigned his friends as bodyguards. Though no wonder he felt that way, with the bad incidents.

This is hitting me hard. I don’t have dwarfism but I am only 4’8. The amount of bullying and teasing I received as a child. And now as an adult I get talked down to or fetishized. But I’m glad to hear the perspective of those who have dwarfism.

4'6 here and lots of bulling though out my life. Also people randomly take pictures of me as well. Thankfully I am Legally blind so I don't see most of it. But yeah people suck and the world isn't really made for the short. Got fired from a job once because I was "to short to reach the top of the donut case"

Dwarfism is truly a wonderful thing to look into simply because there are just soooo many different perspectives not only within the community but also outside of the community. I finally even if it’s for a brief moment feel seen as a person and not as a little person and I’m so thankful for you and the two lovely women who agreed to be a part of this. Thank you so much!
I think it helps a lot that in a society Oompa Loompas are not the reference people have of people with dwarfism. Hollywood truly did you guys dirty. I live in a country where one of our top artist has dwarfism. His name is Roel van Velzen and he is incredibly talented. As a short girl (5'2 - not having dwarfism) that got made fun of, bullied even for my height i honestly never associated oompa lompas or any mystical short "creatures" shown in Disney with Real people with dwarfism. It was like my brain made an automatic distinction between them as dwarfism being a genetic condition that affects humans, and there's real people with that condition. Vs the mystical, magical creatures that Disney had.
I would love to see “I spent a day with service dog handlers”! It would be so helpful to spread awareness and educate the public! We have so many negative experiences with the public but at the same time service dogs are life changing and a huge source of joy! Id love to see it!

I have it too and I’ve always felt like it messes with ur nerve endings and that’s why it causes so much pain absolutely everywhere
@@phazzy your brain sends misleading waves of pain through your body consistantly. Its different for each person. Mine imitates arthiritis. It's a burning numbness, it's really bad during cold weather and focus my hands and feet but every articulation is painful. My neighbor, surprisingly, also has it. For her, it's a sharp pain, like a knife going through her skin. There is no way to find it. You have to go through a process of illness/condition elimination and there is also no apparent cause. There seems to be a link between genetics and a traumatic event but it never was proven.
Long story short, it's a phantom pain that is considered a condition with no cure or cause. The more youre anxious, the more pain you feel because your brain is more active.
i feel so seen right now. i have dwarfism and i wanted this to happen so bad. this made me feel really seen and comforted and less alone.

This is why I love Peter Dinklage! He’s one of the only little people I know to be given serious roles in movies like Penelope and tv shows like Game of Thrones. I wish there were more acting opportunities given to people like Terra! She’s awesome and I wish I could see her in more tv and movies just being an interesting character. She seems like she is an amazing actress!

One of the guys on Jackass had dwarfism too. He died in 2020 though and that’s not the same type of content that Peter Dinklage stars in. Would love to see more roles in the future for drama shows instead of just reality TV.

Having a physical difference that is very easy to see can be really difficult, the stares, the question, etc

This was a great interview. I have a friend that has dwarfism and her whole family does too. They’ve even adopted children with dwarfism so they have four girls now. They’re honestly the nicest people I’ve ever met and their oldest is a fantastic singer.

I struggle from Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) which is an eating disorder that really flies under the radar and doesn't have much research or anything, and I'd really love to see an episode with other people who suffer from this "invisible eating disorder", as it's sometimes described as. I know my diet is shit, but my brain physically stops me from eating, like, most vegetables at this point, which really sucks, cause I can't even eat some of the foods I know I love without feeling like I'm going to choke or die and I don't know why and it's infuriating.
I have ARFID too! I hope he dies an episode on it some day

When I was a kid there was this one girl with dwarfism in school who was always so nice to me. I was a quiet kid but she would always greet me so warmly at school although we weren't friends and she was a couple years older than me. She had bright pink hair and she was SO LOUD lmao. She would sit with me and tell me stories and I wouldn't really talk much back but I really looked up to her a lot. I think she was a friend of my cousin's and that's why she may have felt protective of me or something. She would call herself "the firefly", haha. I always think of her when I see someone with dwarfism.
I have a form of Dwarfism too, I have something called Russell-Silver Syndrome. I am proportionate, I basically look like a 14 year old but with a more mature face. I am 5' feet, but I could've been taller, probably 5' 5", but I have severe scoliosis too, and that's made me shorter. Look it up some time.
I have Acondroplasia. I am beginning to feel sciatica and feeling terrified by it… I’ve been going to the gym more often and trying to lose the weight to feel like I can do something about this. I even tried physical therapy and I feel that the gym helps more… what has your experience been like?

@@furonwarrior I don't have this disease you speak of. Russel-Silver is a weird Dwarfism. There are other symptoms or traits that RSS people can have, like they could develop scoliosis, have a hypospadia, their left side of their bodies are small than their right side, fast metabolism, and more. I unfortunately have every single one of those problems. None of them except the scoliosis is anything real life altering, but my scoliosis has basically ruined my life, it's that bad. I am in pain all the time and surgery isn't really an option, all the surgeons I've met said it's probably better I just live my life like this. But I cope and I love playing videogames anyways, so that's what I do.

I relate to this episode soooo much. Im 26 and was born with a rare metabolic dwarfism called MPS IV. I have had MANY corrective bone surgeries on my body. I am disabled and only stand 3ft tall 3'2 on a good day (knocked knees).

The entertainment aspect is really interesting, because of course we shouldn't diminish all actors with dwarfism and make them into elves/oompa loompas/whatever but at the same time, they still need jobs. Perhaps if there were more proper deep roles for them, we as a society would see them as complete humans instead of just "dwarves". Representation in the industry has gotten better for LGBTQIA+ and people of colour (still not perfect obviously) but it definitely needs to also get better for people with disabilities. Like why can't we make a regular drama show with a person with dwarfism as the main character, without the dwarfism really being a plot point? Why can't we just have a person with an amputated leg be the sidekick, without joking about it? Why couldn't someone just be deaf and signing and it not be a strange thing, etc etc? There's really a lot to be done and we're moving way too slow.

Peter Dinklage slaying as Cyrano was so beautiful I cried. I already loved him so much as Tyrion, but that was a role written for a dwarf. So seeing him play someone who could have been played by someone with average height I knew he got the role for his talent and charisma.
I think I saw somewhere that the author actually always had him in mind for the role of Tyrion and specifically requested him. Not sure if it’s true but he’s an amazing actor so I wouldn’t be surprised
I was so invested in Little Women:LA and that’s how I learned all about dwarfism. I need a reunion episode with updates from everyone!

I’ve noticed before, but in this video particularly it struck me how gentle Anthony is when talking about sensitive subjects like this. Like, if a person is totally okay talking and joking about some condition they have, he’ll mirror that, but the instant he notices a subject is harder for someone he backs down and does his best to ensure they’re comfortable every step of the way. It’s really touching to see someone so accepting of how people tell their stories. It’s made me a bit bolder when speaking about my experiences. Well done, and keep it up.
Cara has the most calming voice. Hearing is a large sensory issue for me but her voice was so patient the whole time.
My aunt is 4’9”. Every car she has owned has had 2x4 wood blocks screwed into the pedals by my uncle. On the flip side, I’m 6’6” the car I drive has the seat welded back in order to make it drivable.
I really appreciate how Anthony showcased things his guests disagreed on, like their preferred terminology and feelings on reality shows. He's doing a great job highlighting the fact that not all people with the same disability have the same viewpoints.
As a kid my mum had a friend with dwarfism, and I thought he had the coolest gadgets ever. He even had an elevator floor in his kitchen, so me and my sis (and him) could reach the counter and we could help him prepare food. I thought he was the coolest person ever. All this to say kids don’t judge, they learn the judgement from their parents.
I love watching Anthony’s videos and I really appreciate him bringing people in to discuss their experiences that might be misunderstood it’s really helped me to be more understanding❤

I went to school and was in the same classes with a person who had dwarfism, and I will always admire her. This school could take a kid from nursery to age 16, and she was there for almost all that time. The students knew her so well, and she had been there so long that (from my limited perspective of course) that thankfully being herself did not draw much negative attention, and a person would get called out so fast if they tried to bully her over it. I will never know the struggles I’m certain she had in so many aspects of life, but I’m happy to say she was there for every lesson and school activity, not even held back from the sports. She was an extra badass in my eyes for not backing down from anything :D I know the idea of graduating from our somewhat safe place made her nervous (for obvious reasons), and I hope that wherever she is now that she’s thriving

I was at a music festival last week in a small city in Canada and saw a group of 6 people with dwarfism. It was the first time I ever seen people with it and everyone was treating them like normal people, there was one tall guy that picked one of them up so they could see the stage. It was kinda cool to see
Id love to see you sit down with adults who have apraxia, Its sadly not talked about much. My nephew is 13 now and was diagnosed when he was young around 3-4, unfortunately hes in those tough years of middle school where kids are mean about anything. He just made the connection the other day that he gets made fun of because he has "special needs". My heart hurts for kids on the daily struggling with bullies.
If anyone is in middle school and having a hard time please know its not forever and when your older you wont even remember most of it.
My girlfriend has dyspraxia (mild apraxia from what I’ve gathered) and even though it is ‘mild’ I still see how irritated she gets because of how she’s viewed as different and ‘not as good’ because of it (pe in school sucked for her) I hope your nephew finds good, supportive friends to keep him going, middle school sucks when you’re not an average kid. Make sure to tell him from me and my gf that it gets better and soon people will grow out of there prejudices + realise he’s just as amazing as the rest of them. Good luck to him :)

what is apraxia?
@@ssupermarlo it is difficult to explain via text. But essentially how the average brain works is that our
brain talks to our tongue to move our lips and we dont need to think about it some one with apraxia does. So my nephew was delayed with speech and as he got older and even in the beginning he gets ver frustrated when he knows what he wants to say or speak but he doesn't know how. So sometimes it takes him a long time to form a proper sentence ect. Idk the exact age but we noticed he wasnt talking when kids his age normally would (my sister also taught all her baby how to do basic signs when they were little) so he would just sign when he wanted a basic need.
I never heard about it until he got diagnosed and its a heart breaking journey when we all knew that school bullies were going to be the toughest journey in all of this. Needless to say he is so intelligent, he loves trying new things, bugging his sister's while being the favorite big brother to his 2 yr old brother. Just because he has a hard time reading and writing due to something he was born with and i understand kids dont fully process it at their age but parents need to do better in this day and age. He shouldn't have to beg to buy under armor clothes in hope's the kids don't pick on him. 😓 its 2022 and middle schoolers are taking their lives everyday because of such thing's. I won't let me nephew be one.
As a speech therapist it's really good to see someone talk about it. I have apraxia, but not apraxia of speech. So I struggle with a lot of motor skills and intricate stuff. My hat goes off to everyone with apraxia of speech. It's not easy and it's totally misunderstood.

@@oceanbanana4341 it's when you have a strong, visceral reaction to certain sounds. so like imagine the feeling most people get when they hear nails on a chalkboard but imagine having that feeling for many other things like chewing, gum snapping/popping, and other sounds most people pay no mind to. it can be extremely disruptive to someone who has it because they really can't control the reaction and it can cause a lot of discomfort.

It stole the breath from my body when Cara shared that awful story about that girl in the bathroom, picking her up and saying such a vicious cruel thing... I can't even imagine going through that. These women are incredible for sharing their stories.
In my old school, there was a girl with dwarfism who is just..I'm glad no one is bullying her, at least I don't notice, and quite frankly, she gets to bully people. She's strong, charismatic,, wiild and honest. She loves teasing, and messing with people, and she could get away by acting like a child, even though she's really really old. I met her when I was really young, like I was still a kid, and she was a teen. I never expected I'd see her again recently, I'm now old and definitely she's much older but nothing really changed much of her, as well as her attitude, which is not a bad thing. She used to call me granny due to having a slight disability that requires me to have glasses to see(im half blind), and back then it kinda affected me. Now she hadn't insult me and was actually happy seeing me again, I was happy to see her too. I'm now in touch of her, and I prefer that than never seeing her again.
Her having dwarfism didn't give her the to get away with being a bully and calling people names either though. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Glad you two made up in the end

I really love when you interview groups of people, like people with certain occupations, survivors of incidents, and just people who before watching the interview you may have hade a prejudice against.
Dwarf people tend to be really cool in my experience, they are really confident and own they body with pride. As a short person in comparison to my family I kinda learn from them to not feel insecure.

My cousin is a little person :) she struggles a lot with people starring at her and it makes her insecure. :( she’s very sweet though but part of all the trauma from bullying is she developed bpd. She’s getting a bit better but it doesn’t help that her mom died awhile ago and her grandma adopted her while trying to get out of a toxic relationship. Her aunt also died after having a daughter and they have a sibling like relationship since they were both adopted by their grandma. She’s also hispanic and gets hate for that and her cousin/sister is African American and gets bullied for that and for not having a mom. They’re also very poor and struggling so much. I really hope they get better and that I can spread awareness that BULLYING IS NEVER OK!!! This episode has helped me so much. I think I have proportionate dwarfism, so on my next doctor’s visit, I want to get a professional opinion. I’m 4’8” and I’ve faced some of the struggles these women have faced, and I’m still the same height as I was when I was 8yrs old (I’m 25 rn). While people have always pointed out how short I am (and have been called a midget), I think I ‘blend’ in since my body parts are relatively proportionate to one another.
I'm surprised that some doctors are reluctant to diagnose this. I have a cousin who has a proportionally correct body, but he's 14 and the size of a 6 year old. Hasn't grown in years. Doctors say he's just short. But not growing at his age isn't normal.
I love her mom for refusing to let her surgically alter herself for somebody else. That's a powermom.
I grew up in a house previously owned by a family with dwarfism, and it was interesting with my 6 foot+ family
In the back of my mind I have always wanted to learn more about little people and get their perspective, so thanks for this.

I've only met one person with dwarfism in my life and we went to high school together. She was a wonderful person to be around. I honestly don't get why people gotta be so weird about it.

Anthony I appreciate what you do, you are a good person to bring awareness to those who don't know. I grew up so poor if I told you my story you would swear I was making it up. When I grew up in the 80s. We had no heat, or air conditioning. I feel for people who are different. If got picked on every single day of my life in school because I was poor. Believe me I have empathy for people who" Society doesn't Dean perfect." .. " Which nobody is". Now I'm older the sad truth is those who pick on me the most, was the most afraid they're going to end up poor like me.. that did not hold me back it just made me stronger. And I live in the United States
spend a day w construction workers. my dad just told me how people dont offer their bathrooms and when theres an emergency, they resort to some unspoken embarrassing efforts :(
honestly, anthony padilla is a huge inspiration for me. i watched him in smosh when i was a kid all the time. youtube creators kind of became my safe fun space while i was going through a rollercoaster of years dealing with ocd and bipolar disorder. and to see him now, doing something so genuine and wholesome and healing - trying to put a love of diversity and humanity out into the world is so so amazing. and he does a wonderful job of treating people like people. thank you for sharing your wonderful work with us, anthony and everyone else on the team. ♥️

i don't have dwarfism myself but i'm very short, and especially as a child when i always looked a few years below my actual age, by god did the "cute, adorable, and precious" part hit *hard.*
Such a great video! I remember requesting this over a year ago, and it’s everything I was hoping it would be! My sister has achondroplasia and she’s done so many amazing things in her life. It’s important to emphasize that little people can do almost everything average sized people can!

I actually go to high school with someone who has dwarfism. When you first see them it's a big shock, but eventually I got used to it. He's a really great person and will be graduating this year!
