    I really want to learn Gregg! For me, it's not a matter of speed, or personal note-taking. When my mother passed away recently, she left behind a lot of shorthand notes - some going back to the fifties! I would love to be able to read at least some of them. Although, even she admitted that her notes were sometimes indecipherable.... I don't know how much success I'll have, but I feel it's worth the effort!

      TheMacawlady Learning the alphabet from this series may not be a bad place for you to start. Your mom probably learned either from the Anniversary edition which came out in 1930, or the simplified edition, which came out in 1949. The next major edition came out in the '60s, so if she was already writing in the 50's she learned before then. Learning the alphabet will enable you to puzzle out some of her words. I give in the course references the Anniversary dictionary which covers the abbreviations in use at that time. That may be the only resource you need. If it turns out that there are other words you can't read that don't appear in the Anniversary dictionary, you may want to pick up a copy of the Simplified dictionary on the second hand market.

      Howard Wallace Yes, she would have been in high school in the 50's, so the 1949 edition was probably what she used. Thank you for the tips!

    About a month ago I decided to read/study the Bible (to see what it actually says) and I was having a hard time understanding some of the wording so I found that it is much easier to understand if I wrote it out. Yesterday I realized that after four weeks, half of a notebook and 10+ pencils I wasn't even halfway through Genisis, so I decided that I needed figure out someway to save time, energy and paper. I decided I needed to learn some form of shorthand but didn't want to spend a lot of time doing it. I spend almost three hours googling in circles and watching random videos that were pointless and confusing, then I randomly picked the link to this video and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Not only was I able to copy verses in half the time, but my spelling is atrocious and this nearly eliminated the issue (I have always tried to spell things out phonetically)... and I only watched lesson 1.1. Thank you so much, I can't even begin to tell you how much easier my life is going to be because of this. -Paige LaVerne Webber,

    Thank you for a very good overview of shorthand systems, Mr Wallace. I'd like to emphasise that I think a lot of effort is needed for someone to learn the basic strokes of old fashioned symbol shorthand systems as thoroughly as they need to be learnt. Some people manage it - and some seem to take a great liking to symbol shorthand - while others, like me, hate spending time "learning squiggles" (as i've heard it described). I tried and failed to learn the basic strokes of first Pitman's then Gregg's. I then tried a cumbersome abc shorthand system. I am now learning Teeline and, like Blueflame 1 0 1, I find it is easier to learn than Gregg's, which you acknowledge Teeline was designed to be. This is because, though Teeline is a symbol system, the basic strokes of Teeline are based on our Roman alphabet. That helped me.
    The point I want to make is the importance of choosing the right system right from the start as it is very frustrating and demoralising to have to unlearn one system to learn another. You will find yourself about to write something that could be read as something entirely different in the system you've now adopted.
    Thanks again for a great video.

      Thanks for your kind reply. I've been thinking some more about my failure. I was studying without a teacher and I wonder if there is some established technique that I was unaware of that should be used by people learning the basic strokes of Gregg's. Apologies if you have already covered this in one of your videos.

    I loved this content, and I admire your collection of shorthand books. Very impressive.
    I note that in this video, you concentrate on English-language shorthand writing. I am sure you are aware of the variety of systems in use across other languages as well. In particular, the Gabelsberger family of shorthand systems (notably the German/Austrian unified shorthand system) have been described as 'cursive' rather than 'geometric' (Pitman being a rather pure form of the latter), and have been adapted to many European languages.
    I feel this is an underresearched and probably underdocumented subject. However as you hint at in the video, active, practice-based knowledge about them is fading. We use other writing implements, systems, supporting technologies now and the niches for shorthand tend to disappear. These techniques should therefore be captured and documented now.

    Just finished watching your introduction video. Successfully accessed the material list links and actually excited to learn Gregg.
    My purpose is that of transcribing one on one interviews. As a personal development coach / hypnotist, one important skill is the ability to repeat the client's language, usually short phrases, which contain their subconscious programming.
    When working with a client the other day, it was difficult to keep up, however I believe Gregg will solve this minor issue.
    Also, I appreciate the value of the privacy aspect of the shorthand, due to the lack of use. The vast majority of people would have no idea what the "squiggly" lines mean.
    Thank you for your presentation. By the way the camera work is great. Subtle movement, not shakey, feels very active.

    Hello!
    First, I want to thank you for making this course. I don't need to learn shorthand writing, but for some random reason I decided to give it a try. Your course seems to be quite complete, even though you say it's only the basics. So, thanks for all the effort!
    I had two questions for you:
    I'm a spanish speaker (it's my born language), and I have no problem writing on english (shorthanded or otherwise), but I wanted to ask you if you knew about Gregg in other languages. I've found some resources to write gregg in spanish, but just wanted to ask you.
    The second thing is the dot paper. The dots have another use other than measuring? The thing is that I have a gridded notebook (the one with squares printed on it), so I was wondering if I could use that paper instead.
    Again, great course. Thanks!

      I've heard of Spanish adaptations of Gregg but I haven't studied them. You're on your own there.

      I practiced law for several years and wish I had had the inspiration to learn shorthand. Especially as a young lawyer, you find yourself tasked with taking notes during phone calls when the grownups are talking. You are expected to follow and grasp the details of the conversation, all while taking flawless notes. I don't type well, and even if I did, the sound of the tap-tap-tapping in the background would distract everyone on the call. I guess typing is now required in high school so that people can better use their electronic devices. Shorthand should be a required pass/fail, no-credit module in law school.

I had no idea she wrote poetry, let alone songs worthy of copyright. Enclosed in the agreement was a small shorthand note labeled "my first love" which was the song the agreement was for. Is there any way I could contact you and send you a picture for a translation? I would be very grateful to know what song my late grandmother wrote.

    • @Howard_Wallace
      @Howard_Wallace  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tanner, How exciting! If the notes are in Gregg shorthand you may be able to use my videos and reference materials to solve the puzzle yourself. Shorthand tends to have personal quirks, so reading someone else's shorthand can be a challenge and take a bit of work. I don't translate materials myself. I've heard there are translation services available that will take on such a task though. I have not searched them out, but it may be worth looking for. You could also try posting a picture of the note on the Gregg shorthand group on Facebook. There are usually people there looking for a challenge who enjoy taking a stab at translations.

      I've noticed that differences tend to be in abbreviations rather than in the phonetic alphabet. My videos focus on the alphabet and abbreviation techniques and so should not pose many problems for someone wishing to go on to one of the historical published systems.
      I tend to spell the way I speak, and I have my own personal abbreviations, so my notes are not perfectly consistent with any of the historical systems. Or perhaps they are consistent with every one, since most systems gave the tools for the students to continue development of their own personal hands. One of the primary arguments for consistency in spelling and abbreviation was so other people could read ones notes, and that is not much of an issue nowadays.

      @Howard_Wallace  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul, I’m not strictly following any of the historical Gregg versions, unless you count the original 1888 version as used in this course, which just showed the letterforms and how to develop abbreviations. Sometimes I look at the other versions for ideas on abbreviations, but I don’t strictly follow any single one. This short course is based on that eclectic approach. The world has been moving on and now we have many new words not abbreviated in any of the historical systems. The modern student needs to be able to develop abbreviations for that reason alone, if for none other. Also, the memory load is lessened considerably if the only abbreviations developed and remembered are ones the student actually uses frequently.
      In the video I used “prs” to abbreviate the word “personal.”

    • @Zoom_1012
      @Zoom_1012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howard Wallace I kinda had an inkling that you were using the brief PRS. You have quite the collection of shorthand books. I wish I could upload a picture of my collection. Some were really difficult to find. However I'm still missing a couple from the Simplified system.
      I also went to school to learn StenEd machine stenography for broadcast captioning. We have initially about 500+ briefs and phrases in the core theory but once you move on to speed building that's when you start adding your own briefs & phrases to your dictionary.
      StenEd is also a "real-time" theory so there is the additional need to have outlines for all your homonyms, for example: there, their, and they're whereas with Gregg it's much easier because you only need to write it one way and use the context of the sentence to determine which "there" you meant LOL.
      Thanks for sharing you shorthand knowledge.

      +Waeni Ngoloma Great question! There are some sounds in French that are not used in English, so Gregg needs some adaptation to be used for French. Several authors have created such adaptations. I have not studied any of them though. Here is one to get you started.

    I'm curious how you learned shorthand in the first place? I found a Gregg Shorthand anniversary edition textbook that was my late grandma's that looks like it is from the 20's-30's (first chapter and publisher's page are missing) which kind of turned me on to the subject and I'm hoping to incorporate it into my note taking.

      Howard Wallace Interesting, I noticed you mention factors for privacy of many methods in this video so that makes sense now. I would actually prefer if others could read it for noe so I could share notes with other students in my classes, but my own learning is going to have to come first and foremost.
      I plan to go through your presentations when I can gather some time and materials for convenience. I now have some digital texts but I often prefer hardcopy. I hope to have a decent grasp by the end of summer, at least enough to start incorporating it in the meantime.

    • @Howard_Wallace

      The conventions from various previous editions of Gregg are of little import today. The vital thing is the writer needs to be able to read what was written.

      Lauren, This video introduces you to the different varieties of shorthand. It may help you to figure out the one your grandfather is using. Once you figure that out you may post a picture on one of the shorthand Facebook or web groups. They may be able to help. Shorthands can be highly personalized though, and sometimes that makes them a challenge to read.

      +Blueflare1o1 If you already know how to spell and write in English you should encounter no difficulty remembering what you already know. However, if you are just learning to spell in English it is possible that the more logical spelling in shorthand could make your learning of conventional spelling more difficult.

      +Blueflare1o1 Teeline was created with that in mind. Many people like it and do well with it. Since Teeline duplicates all the letters of the Roman alphabet you can even use conventional spelling with it, if you choose to do so. Conventional spelling will slow you down considerably though.

      The Wikipedia article on abbreviations says “Acronyms and initialisms are regarded as subsets of abbreviations (e.g. by the Council of Science Editors). They are abbreviations that consist of the initial letters or parts of words.”

    WHY DON'T YOU JUST USE A SMALL VOICE RECORDER THAT YOU CAN PLACE IN YOUR SHIRT POCKET ???
    NOBODY WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE DOING ANY RECORDING.

    • @Howard_Wallace
      @Howard_Wallace  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +rcx8666c That is a great idea if you want to record some conversation or a lecture. Most cell phones today will record audio. This technology and voice recognition has made taking dictation obsolete. Notetaking however is quite a different skill. I have one video dedicated to the differences between business dictation and notetaking. In notetaking you think about the content, process it, and record only what is important. Then the notes are easily read and referred to. If one reviews an audio recording one gets all the content, and has to do the processing at the time of listening. That's why few people make and review audiorecordings. You could listen at double speed and cut the review time required in half, but it is still much less efficient than reviewing a page of notes.

    • @rcx8666c
      @rcx8666c 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SOME BUSINESSES DO NOT WANT ANY VOICE RECORDING ON THEIR PREMISES. I DON'T KNOW WHY. SOME BUSINESS WILL EVEN GET YOU FIRED IF YOU MAKE ANY VOICE RECORDINGS OF THEIR MEETINGS.
      A VOICE RECORDING OF A COLLEGE CLASS WOULD BE GREAT.
      YOU COULD PROBABLY SELL COPIES OF THE CLASS RECORDINGS TO OTHER STUDENTS OR EVEN GIVE AWAY THE RECORDINGS.
      YOU CAN MAKE COPIES AND PUT THE COPIES ON A THUMB DRIVE.

    • @jeffw1267
      @jeffw1267 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with that is that if you just record passively, you won't learn much. If you are taking notes, you have to listen and decide what is important enough to write down. Even using shorthand, I wouldn't consider writing down every word. I'm trying to understand and sift through the facts WHILE I am writing, so when I read it back later it is just review.

    • @hotjanuary

      rcx8666c, the problem with that is that it is illegal. The professor’s lecture is considered intellectual property of the professor. The university may even kick you out if they find out. You may sell your OWN notes, though.
      Edit: sorry, I wasn’t clear enough. You can’t sell, or post online other people’s intellectual property for free, or give it away. It is the same as pirating copyrighted textbooks.
