I was invited to play with Dweezil in the Zappa Plays Zappa band when they first toured Australia in around 2007? I was shocked when Steve asked me to play Evo on the gig. It was like Clapton asking me to play Blackie or David Gilmour asking me to play the black strat. A moment I'll never forget. To play one of the most historic guitars owned by one of the greatest guitarists, musicians, composers in history....amazing. Thanks Steve!
I know how that feels. I've had the privilege of playing one of Eddie Van Halen's guitars up at his studio as well as one of Uli Jon Roth's first Sky guitar models.
His hesitations, pauses, thoughtful breaks in his speech, even for a season pro like him tells you all about the magic of the musical instrument itself.
I like how he said the wood matters but he can't hear the differences, but rather it's the whole package and how it all sounds together. Completely agree!
When I went to get my first guitar at a Guitar Center in Las Vegas in 2006, Steve Vai was there. As a teenager at the time, I didn't know who he was -- but I just happened to pick an Ibanez as my first guitar, and he signed it for me. I remember he was really nice -- and I wish I knew who he was back then. Besides two employees at that section, I was pretty much alone with him for 30 whole minutes.
When He showed the Strat 70s with which he played with Zappa, all modified... It is really surprising to see the Darwinian evolution towards his later models by Jem!!!✨💖🌞
I envy Steve. He still has his first "real guitar", a Fender Stratocaster (10:10). I'm about Steve's age and I also got my first "real guitar" at the age of 16. Opposed to Steve, who got money from his mother, I worked all Summer in a stinking steel factory to save the money. I also modified my Strat but only as far as that I could revert it back to the original. I remember sweating as to whether I should route out the single coil cavity to be able to fit a Bill Lawrence humbucker... and I did. But because it sounded horrible, I put the single coil back in. Had I not moved around so much, I'd probably still have my Strat and early Ibanez guitars. Great video. I enjoyed it.
Glad to hear you mention bad horsie for your next tour can't wait to meet you your flow and evo are so legendary to me as an Ibanez player I own 3 rgs ...very cool video thank you
FLO (the first one) actually was a floral pattern guitar repainted white! It was a main guitar for about 10 years (1999-2009), and from some speculation it is thought that it was one of his main skyscraper guitars, that had the monkey grip destroyed by thomas mcrocklin (hence the new paint job, chosen as the 7vwh was becoming the new standard model)
The Woodies are absolutely gorgeous but they don't sing with passion like the white Jems. Steve's was one of a kind, but the production models were a bit lacking. Not to say they're bad, because they aren't...they just don't have quite the same elegance and response.
Imagine Satriani sending you his tour guitar that he personally painted! Great video. Steve always is great at interviews and seems like a good person. I've been a fan since Eat'em And Smile. Got to see him on a G3 tour, second row center. Wow. What a show.
@@comfortablynumb9342 I forgot to mention I saw the Eat 'em and Skyscraper tours, also with Whitesnake after that, all in Seattle but not so close those times. =) Also saw him at a smaller place called Parkers in 1993.
I've been listening to Steve since the Attitude Song came out in Guitar Player magazine in 84, I was just a kid. I still have the vinyl disc that came in the magazine. I don't like seeing Vai grow old. Maybe I'm foreshadowing, because I'm 47 now.
It's kinda hard to accept that all these 80s virtuosos are pushing or past 60...Satch, Vai, Timmons, Yngwie, Vinnie Moore, Michael Angelo Batio. Even Paul Gilbert who used to be the young kid has aged. Meanwhile Marty Friedman still looks the same as Rust in Peace era.
Same here buddy, except I'm 49. I ended up finding Flexible after that, in a small town K-mart. Told my parents I wanted a guitar for Christmas that year, and got one of those built in speaker ones lol.
I’m new on the scene and keep seeing Steve’s name all over. This is the first video I watched with him in it and he’s is truly a special person. He deserves all the praise.
These are great.. I really like the look and sound of that Strat, the Onyx Pia.. but I can't keep eyeing that Green Jem hanging in the background.. That has been my dream guitar since I was a teenager back in the late 80s..
Traditional Russian acoustic guitar is a 7 string. When I was a kid I played guitar (I mean, I still do ;) ) and my friend wanted to play too. His dad bought him this 7 string guitar. He said "I didn't know which one to buy so I've bought the one with most string on" :D This was the worst guitar I have ever had in my hand. Incredibly bad craftmanship :D
No wonder you guys can do so much with your guitars because you put so many things in it to make it sounds good. Money can make whatever you want to happen, happen. Off course skills count for the most of it for sure.
Always thought (actually told in various guitar magazines in the nineties) the flo guitars were repainted floral Jems, that were given the white treatment because he wasn't pushing the floral jems anymore for Ibanez, as they weren't making them... but loved a couple of the floral jems, and wanted to keep them and use them on the road, so had them made up to look like the newer white jems he was pushing at the time.
I think this is mentioned on his website as well. He has All About Evo and All About Flo and if I'm not misremembering you're right he described Flo as a repainted floral JEM that even had the neck pocket converted to the new style AANJ to fit the new necks on it. Maybe one of the Flo models was the story he told in this video but he's always said everywhere else it was previously a floral JEM
Cool story about naming your guitars after Harley engines. Evo is a great engine and I still see plenty of those Evo's on the road when I'm out riding. Especially when riding in the Appalachian mountains.
@@hathaway.1166 Dont know much about that engine, but sure its ok if it is the first one replacing the engine thats been in sportsters since 1986. Might have kinks to be worked out, but don't know? Hopefully no kinks like the new M8 the first few years. What are you hearing?
The PIA Black is definitely my favorite, especially after hearing it on the song Knappsack- was blown away by its playability. How many guitars you know that can be played one-handed?
They really should release that 21 fret strat-JEM (but with 22 frets), I'm very sure it would be a hit. A lot of people can't stand double locking trems and there's now NO fixed bridge JEMs. Or JS models either for that matter.
I could totally listen to Steve Vai talk about his guitars all day lol. As along time Strat devotee it would be pretty otherworldly to play that early Sticker Strat
Wish you'd write a book not so much about guitars(don't get me wrong I love them and own 62). But your view on life, love, hardships and reflections of your own life

That gem strat was the most straty guitar I’ve ever heard.
Steve doesn’t give the Jem77fp enough love and attention. It’s the only vai guitar that I’ve always loved
Exactly - for me it's the coolest guitar ever made.
I own that guitar and absolutely love it, it sounds different from any other Jem I own in a great way. I definitely agree with you on that one!
I had one for a lot of years. It was the most versatile guitar I had played until very recently.
I have an 88 that I bought in 89 and the toured with for 13 years...It's still my go to guitar
